To celebrate the 45th anniversary of iconic Dutch jazz label Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing a series that features albums that are part of the Timeless Records legacy and will be released mainly throughout 2022.

Part of this series is Pharoah Sanders' Moon Child from 1990, which bookended a decade of musical soul searching for Sanders. The acclaimed free jazz player is known to have a raw and abrasive sound, but reinvented himself on this album as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful deliberations. Moon Child is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on its title track. The record was co-written with Horace Silver, George Gershwin and Abdullah Ibrahim and recorded with William Henderson, Stafford James, Eddie Moore and Cheikh Tidiane Fall.

Le Cobra de Sundama is a famous singer from Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo ) who composed more than 12 albums backed by great band such as Empire Bakuba , and was considered as The voice like Kofi Olomide or Papa Wemba mixing lingala and French street expressions. After many concerts and tours allover the continent , he finally settled in Angola . The B side features a Dj / radio edit with the addition of few electro synths . Produced in Paris by the great producer Jacky Toto and now officially licensed . Remastered by The Carvery and pressed on limited 500 Deluxe vinyl copies.

Robert Glasper’s 2005 Blue Note debut Canvas signaled the arrival of a singular new voice in jazz and his 2007 follow-up In My Element solidified his status as a rising star who was taking the music someplace new. Featuring bassist Vicente Archer & drummer Damion Reid, the album expanded the possibilities of where a modern jazz piano trio might go by delving further into his hip-hop & gospel roots.

Jazz guitar legend George Benson began his career unfeasibly young, recording for RCA aged nine. After a spell with organist Jack McDuff, he went solo in the early 1960s, cutting volumes of jazz and soul before belatedly scoring hits as a lead vocalist. Irreplaceable dates from 2003, when Benson had embraced the slick grooves of urban contemporary, working with Robert Bell’s son Hakim, Joshua P Thompson and fellow Babyface collaborator, Joe. This gatefold sleeve reissue comes complete with three songs that appeared on certain later editions, namely ‘Softly, In A Morning Sunrise,’ ‘Take You Out’ and ‘Arizona Sunrise.’

R&B singer Yazmin had two albums to her credit in the 90s, released the lost album "A Scent Of Flowers" in 1993 but it's hard to find because it was released scandinavian edition vinyl only at that time, and P-vine has taken the opportunity to reissue it in analogue form for the first time. The album features 13 tracks, including Roy Ayers' 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' which was well received when released as a single in 2021, a cover of The Emotions' "Best Of My Love', , and the club classic Ray Charles' remake of 'Let Me Take Over'.

Wendell Harrison was born in Detroit in 1942 where he began formal jazz studies for piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone. At 14, while still in high school, Harrison started performing & recording professionally with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Grant Green, Sun Ra, Hank Crawford … and many others. In 1971, Harrison began teaching music at Metro Arts (a multi-arts complex for youth) where he also connected with Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and Phil Ranelin…soon after they formed the (now legendary) Afro-centric Tribe record label and artist collective. Tribe used the Metro Arts complex as a vehicle to convey a growing black political consciousness. Wendell Harrison also published the very popular Tribe magazine, a publication dedicated to local and national social and political issues, as well as featuring artistic contributions such as poetry and visual pieces. In 1978 Harrison and McKinney co-founded Rebirth, a non-profit jazz performance and education organization, in which many notable jazz artists have participated. Around the same time Wendell Harrison also created the Wenha record label and publishing company, which released many of his (now classic) recordings as well as those of other artists, such as Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond and Reggie Fields (The Real ShooBeeDoo). In the early 1990s, Wendell Harrison was awarded the title of “Jazz Master” by Arts Midwest. This distinction led Harrison to collaborate with fellow honorees and gave him the chance to tour throughout the United States, Middle East and Africa. Even to this day Wendell Harrison's recordings for the Tribe, Wenha and Rebirth labels have a large worldwide fanbase. It is on Wehha in 1990 that Harrison released (and self-produced) the opus: ‘Fly By Night’ which we are proudly presenting you today. ‘Fly By Night’ is a monster of an album featuring an all-star line-up that includes Doug Hammond (Mingus, Lonnie Liston Smith) on drums, Kirk Lightsey (Chet Baker, Calvin Keys) on piano, Cecil McBee (John Hicks, Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane) on bass, Jaribu Shahid (Sun Ra) on contrabass and Pamela Wise (Tribe) on Piano. Harrison is killing it here with this selected ensemble (guys he grew up with in Detroit in the late 50’s, when hard bop was the thing and Miles and Coltrane were the heroes of the day). This group of talented veterans are taking this classic album to unseen heights. On ‘Fly By Night’ the gloves come off…no more jazzy-funk or poppy-jazz. Wendell picks up his tenor for one tune but the remainder of the sessions he performs on clarinet. Wendell’s mastery coaxes the sweet piquant sound of the instrument and as it re-emerges in the contemporary jazz scene. The eight handpicked tunes demonstrate the fertile new directions Wendell Harrison has been working on, combing standards with a fresh new approach. On these amazing recordings (recorded at the Rebirth Studios in Detroit) the listener is invited to experience a synthesis of what has been and what is now. Street soul grail alert! Freestyle reissue the previously white label-only Guess Who LP, originally released anonymously by Rick Clarke in 1992.

Crossing ruff-but-sweet UK street soul sensibilities with stripped-back house, garage and hip-hop flavours, the Guess Who LP was dropped covertly during a period in the early 90s when Rick was signed up to Soul II Soul's Funki Dreds label, contractually restricting him from releasing his music elsewhere. Bubbling with creative energy and a slew of ideas that he just couldn't help himself from getting out there, Rick brought a range of friends and collaborators to his MJB Records studio in West Kensington where the LP was produced and recorded on his trusty Fostex E16 in a matter of a couple of days.

Raw drum machines and simple but effective basslines & melodies abound across the album's 9 offerings - with tracks at times feeling like pencilled musical ideas still in flux. Highlights include Jill Francis' sublime vocal riding the stripped-back samba-esque groove of Gonna Make You Happy, the sugary soul harmonies of Imaani's Share My Love With You, and criminally short outro track Sweet Vibrations.

Worldwide exclusive, fully licensed ! Finally a proper re-issue of this stone cold soul-reggae classic. The record was originally published in 1993, but the first session dates back to 1979. It was around this time that Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith (of The Wailers and Soul Syndicate fame) approached the singer with the idea of re-making some Curtis Mayfield songs. ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue’ was the first track generated during the meeting, followed after a couple of years by ‘Move On Up’. Devon Russell's birthplace and date are as much a mystery as the gaping holes in his recording career. He began with the Tartans, a mid-'60s rock steady vocal group comprised of himself, Prince Lincoln Thompson, Linbergh "Preps" Lewis and Cedric Myton; they disbanded after their 1967 hit "Dance All Night" (Federal Records). It is no mystery Jamaicans loved Motown soul, but this tribute was an epiphany on its own. With a crew comprised of eclectic master drummer Sly Dunbar, the album was completed at the Leggo Studios in Kingston, Jamaica with The Firehouse Crew on board. A mission accomplished ten years after the first foundation stone was laid. We recently heard Devon Russell ‘Move On Up’ and ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue’ on the amazing Soul jazz compilation Disco Reggae Rockers, now you have the whole package !

MELINGO's Tangos Bajos is a milestone in Argentina's young generation in tango music. When Melingo moved back to Buenos Aires in 1997 after a decade in Europe, he turned to tango. He recorded an album that became an instant classic, first in Buenos Aires and then in Spain, UK and France—where they call him "Le Tom Waits du Tango". Using minimal resources: bandoneon, double bass and nylon string guitar, Melingo creates the foundation for his stories—a landscape of losers, desperados, hustlers, drug addicts and killers. The style is raw—a direct influence of he "Guardia Vieja" (Old Guard), but it's updated with arrangements that flirt with elements of ambient dub.

Still sounding incredibly fresh, The Light has a deep and mature sound with brilliantly arranged tracks moving through various soulful genres from nu-soul, broken beat, deep house and hip-hop with Deborah’s own unique vocal delivery and song writing skills on full display. Over the years, Deborah has worked with many fine producers including 4hero, Bugz In The Attic, Soundspecies, Domu, Ty Macklin and continues to produce incredible work with her contemporaries including the recent collaboration album Human with the excellent K15.

"Vermillion Plaza," the second single from Deastro's full-length debut, Moondagger, miniaturizes the album's best assets and shoots them out of a cannon. Plucky synth arpeggios, end-of-the-world choruses, joyously careening melody lines-it's all there, squashed into a life-affirming three minutes and 50 seconds. "Vermillion Plaza"'s hidden weapon is its songcraft, which may easily goes unnoticed as the pop-music blur flies by-the song lives uneasily in its skin, buttressing its fireworks display of a chorus with odd moments of synthesizer psychedelia, funk, and disco. And when Deastro's Randolph Chabot pleads for contact, singing, "Would you be my son / 'cause all of mine have died?," it's less a cry of self-pity than a salute to the power of human connection.The B-side is Mux Mool's lumbering, half-time remix of "Vermillion Plaza." The former Ghostly Swim featured artist plunges Chabot's vocal into a sinister electronic nightmare-scape, squelching through mud puddles of bass as synthesized strings circle the skies.

'The fourth release from São Paulo label Lugar Alto is not a Brazilian production but it still has strong ties to the country, it is the psychotomimetically heuristic ambience of The Dreambird by Mitar Subotić (Suba) & Goran Vejvoda. The album was produced in Paris in 1987 and 5 years later was the first release by Suba in Brazil as a limited edition CD put out by the Brazilian Catholic label Paulinas Comep.

The album was made while Goran Vejvoda was living in Paris. Relaxed days were spent sitting around, tinkering with sounds, going out, having lunch, coming back and playing some more. Pascal Humbert, bass player from the French band Passion Fodder, joined the duo for a day. Goran had a Japanese field recording CD called Bird Island Seychelles that contained the exotic bird sounds and sea waves used to create the organic textures of the album. Suba left with the 8-track tapes and rough mix cassettes and adapted the music for a sound art installation/happening by the Danube in Novi Sad where The Dreambird was played, climaxing with a laser show.

Mitar Subotić aka Rex Illusivii aka Suba, was born in 1961 in Yugoslavia. A renowned innovator in his home country but is best known in Brazil for his 1999 CD São Paulo Confessions, a hugely important release that effortlessly walked the line between modern MPB and 90s electronica, influencing a whole generation of Brazilian music makers. Tragically, he died just after it was released and could never benefit from its critical acclaim and success. The Dreambird was recorded in Paris one year before “In the moon cage”, a similar project using the pseudonym Rex Illusivi. This was a recording of exuberant synth scapes, ambient guitar and Yugoslavian folk which was awarded the International Fund for Promotion of Culture from Unesco, and included a three-month scholarship to research Afro-Brazilian rhythms in Brazil. The album was released in 2015 by Ivković’s Offen Music.

It’s challenging to trace the story of this project precisely, very little information is available and what we have are diffused fragments of memory from different actors. So, we return to the initial question: what is The Dreambird? It doesn’t matter if it is either an environmental statement or simply relaxing spa music, what it does is evoke sensations that elevate your mind to a higher and more emotional plane and from there you can travel wherever you like.'
