Ichisan’s 2017 Aperitiv was so good that we’ve decided to return for a second helping from his sumptuous album. Four choice cuts have been selected and reworked with a specific instrument focus. The harpsicord version of “Hotel” keeps the intoxicating melody of the original but allows beats to relax as notes shine with an incandescent brilliance. Drums put their feet up for the Rhodes version of “Modri Tunel.” Deep stings and lounging lines mingle in this work of smoke swirling seduction. “Kozmetika (Trumpet Version)” dances to a different tune. Rich bass is again central but this time brash and bold brass intertwine with funk filled bars. The last waltz arrives with the piano version of “Terminal E.” Alluring notes ascend, rising and falling against heartwrenching guitar strings for a finale to end this ballroom inspired beauty.

Fantasound is the fifth full length album from Slovenian Space Disco producer Ichisan. This debut LP on international label Gouranga Music follows recent singles Harmona and Margit Mono. Ichisan's sound is Space Disco Pop Bliss - swooshing synths collide with pulsing rhythms and twinkling melodies, creating a kaleidoscopic universe of pure joy. The artist explains the process: "The album was recorded during the 2020 lockdown period. In those long uncertain days I watched all kinds of movies and rediscovered the ‘1940 Fantasia' with my three year old son. I started researching the story behind the production of the animated musical film and especially the sound production of Fantasia. Fantasound was a stereophonic sound reproduction system developed by engineers of Walt Disney and RCA. That is how I found the album title. After the album was recorded I knew that the artwork must be related to Fantasia. I always had ‘The Sorcerer's Apprentice' in my mind as an inspiration for the album artwork. Mickey Mouse's dreams in the dark-blue space and Fantasia poster logo were guidelines. The illustrator Meta Wraber delivered the fantastic artwork in her signature watercolour technique." 'Fantasound' is a symphony of disco and italo rhythms, space synth waves and a happy-go-lucky driving rhythms. A sound that doesn't exist in the real world, the Fantasound is very much alive and in our mind during our happiest moments. After teasing with several EPs, Ichisan blesses the world via Gouranga Music with the full Fantasound, an immersive ecstatic experience filled with twists and turns that will keep you on your Tip Top toes.

Introducing Jaisiel; The Canary Islands’ answer to Bacalao. After years modestly honing his craft in Madrid and Tenerife and re-appropriating forgotten dollar bin gems for his label Ears On Earth, Jaisiel has found a home on Antinote with his shimmering ‘On the Universe’ EP. Tinged with a late 80s sound are 3 tracks of convertible top down, shirts unbuttoned, neon glow dance music.

Opening the Maxi 12” is the ecstatic ‘Talk To Nature’ replete with chirps, coos and woofs. Its catchy melody a subtle nod to ATB’s seminal anthem 9PM (Till I Come) which was once quoted as sublimating sexuality with its “purring titillation”. There is an equally evocative fluidity to ‘Talk To Nature’ found in Jaisiel’s use of pitch bent guitar, climaxing snare rolls and pounding kick drum. However it’s all very lighthearted when compared to ‘Embrace The Unknown’ a driving and mystical track filled with vocoder commands, tinny drones and synth stabs whose accompanying pointed bass line makes this the perfect song for peak time transitions. Raving into the sunrise on the Carretera El Saler is ‘On The Universe’ a contemplative and melancholic closer. Still vibrating with residual dance NRG, the central vocoder breakdown beckons you to reach for trance, to consider The Universe, as it were.

What ties together this On The Universe EP is Jaisiel’s penchant to upcycle 80s and 90s trance dance sounds in a clear and fresh flavour, distinctly Spanish, while simultaneously using just-enough-cheese catch phrases without being too cliché or pastiche. We start with Dedicated, where dual basslines and live congas make way for pads and piano stabs that keep dancers dedicated to movement. As a tribute to the energy of the sun, Doors (Rē)Open (co-produced with newcomer Sabré J) lays the groundwork for joyful moments on dance floors everywhere, with samples from an Amiri Baraka piece layered to accent the energies found within the tones. Closing with Requiem, a low-slung piece with strings, flutes, and choppy percussion, he reflects and pays respects to lives lost in this past year. Since being astonished by Yakushima Island when I first visited in 2002 for Final Drop’s recording, this was my 4th visit. The plan was to conduct field recordings and receive the coverage. I was reading “Introduction to Field Recording” written by Eisuke Yanagisawa, a book that had been the conversation topic among musicians around me, and I accepted the offer without a second thought as I was purely motivated by the idea of going back to Yakushima. However, it became an even more special project for me, as I eventually produced music from it.

“Soundscape”, a concept proposed by Canadian composer Murray Schafer in the 60s encompassed many ideas and matters, and the most interesting of which was its educational aspect: to discern the creativity of attentively listening to the environment and the action of soundwalking as its practice. I believe this trip was a perfect example of this. The music that was sounding faintly as I entered deep in the mountains and the environmental sound of Yakushima is the basis of this album.

30 years as a full-time touring nightclub DJ sounds like one hell of a career, and for Kenny Summit it's as much of a milestone as it is a turning point. Having shared the stage with greats such as David Byrne, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, George Michael, Kylie Minogue and Prince over the years, Kenny took that influence and inspiration and decided it was time for him to get behind the mic too. ‘Burnin’ is a song written, produced and performed by Kenny Summit that speaks on a desire that's been burning inside of him for three decades. Across those 30 years he’s made many an influential friend too, three of which come on board to remix ‘Burnin’ - the late great Paul Johnson, D&B icon DJ Aphrodite and Brooklyn legend DJ Spinna. "I caught the fever for house in 1990 and by 1992 I was booked for my first DJ gig at New Jersey's famed Zanzibar nightclub where house legend Tony Humphries held court on a weekly basis. King Pari is an almost accidental project. Cameron Kinghorn and DJ Stepmom didn’t even set out to start a band. When Joe (DJ Stepmom) texted Cameron some jams whipped up on his tape machine, Cameron hit him back with “what is this? I want in”. Ten minutes before they first linked up, Joe built the loop for their first single, ‘Sunshine,’ which they then wrote on the spot in a flurry on collective inspiration. The rest of their forthcoming ‘mary EP’ grew from recording sessions in Joe’s Northeast Minneapolis bedroom, a guest house in New Orleans and a cabin in rural Wisconsin. Minneapolis left an obvious mark — the influence of Prince and the Minneapolis Sound, approached from a fresh psychedelic angle. It’s been called stonersoul, lo-fi R&B, dub meets 80’s electro with a heavy dose of funk. Grab it now through Earcave via PPU.. Here comes Emotional Rescue and Konduko's last in their series of Noel Williams/King Sporty reissues, this time looking at later electro productions and the hip-hop/boogie influenced 'Sun Country'. Vocals and co-production come from Williams' long-time partner Betty Wright and as well as a vocal and instrumental mix there's a longform remix by Bay Area disco dub stalwarts, 40 Thieves. By this point in his career, the godfather of Miami Bass had travelled a long way from his Jamaican roots in reggae and soul, paying homage to the warm climbs of the Sunshine State and laying down a much copied template using the Tr-808 drum machine create the electronic emulations of the breakbeat, claps accenting the backbeat and trademark low frequencies shaking the floorboards. The instrumental stretches the arrangement, emphasising the interplay between electronics, bass, vocal samples, scratching and fx, the voice transformed into a percussive element in its own right. The flip sees 40 Thieves flexing their understated understanding of electro funk, making for a rounded, generation-jumping package.

Alex "landy" Hill's musical journey began in the early 80s with the DJ collective Control Crew, performing live DJ sets & rap shows at the birth of turntablism in Oakland California. Alex was the one guy who had two technics 1200s, a costly investment for any teen at that time. In 1982 Alex and high school friend Marcus Thompson formed Timex Social Club. Alex wrote the 1986 anthem "Rumors", a song often cited as the precursor to New Jack Swing. Shortly after high school, Alex would already have a #1 hit on the Billboard R&B charts with Timex Social Club, and tour dates with RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J, performing at Madison square Gardens, Twice! Alex went on to produce music for Jay King / King Jay Records, Club Nouveau, LaRue, and Michael Cooper.
