Dickie Landry’s saxophones have challenged, soothed, and blown minds around the world in his lengthy career as a jazz and avant-garde blower of the highest regard. He was a founding member of the Phillip Glass Ensemble and (according to Wikipedia lore) introduced Paul Simon to zydeco, one of the indigenous sounds of his native southern Louisiana.

Rarely, though, does Dickie’s saxophone make you want to get up and dance like a crazy person.

Such is the effect of “Hang The Rich,” a nugget of slinky, ecstatic punk-funk that was until recently completely lost to the sands of time. Recorded in 1986 (or thereabouts) in New Orleans and featuring vocalist Evelyn Erhard, percussionist Billy Ware, drummer Ricky Sebastian and Dickie himself on saxophones and a Roland Jupiter 4 synthesizer, it’s the kind of song that compels you to move any which way you can, drunk on indignance and the power of satan’s music.

The track came to DFA via LCD Soundsystem’s Korey Richey, who knows Dickie from back home in Louisiana. After a lengthy search, we located the original tapes in a storage locker somewhere in the Southeast and finally were able to get a clean, quality transfer done here at DFA HQ.

From there, we only had one person in mind for a more DJ-friendly edit: Glasgow’s JD Twitch, one half of Optimo and a selector of similarly puckish spirit. Twitch’s ability to contextualize these older, skronkier sounds for a modern dancefloor are in full display on his version, which hits hard and jagged but then opens up into those ineffable rapturous moments.

When producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Diogo Strausz arrived in France for the first time, he already had an impressive CV. First, as part of the duo Balako, his music was released on Razor-NTape, Barefoot Beats and Greco-Roman after gaining the attention of Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. His tracks also have been played by Gilles Peterson on BBC 6. He also produced Brazilian indie artists such as Castello Branco and Alice Caymmi and remixed a track by Brazilian legend Gal Costa. Arrived in France, it is by signing the co-production of the disc "Les Bruits de la Ville" of Voyou or tracks for Julia Jean-Baptiste that he drew attention. Freshly signed on Goutte d'Or Records, affiliated label of Cracki Records, to whom we can thank for Agar Agar, Saint DX or Alma Elste, Diogo Strausz will present his first EP Flight of Sagittarius in April 2022. Flight of Sagittarius is both retro and current. Between the old school boogie of Marcos Valle and the jazz funk of Azymuth but also the sunny groove of Nu Genea or the electro-funk productions of Guts.

SlothBoogie Records welcomes Deep House maestro DJ Aakmael onto its roster this March with ‘The Hardbody Project’ EP, comprised of four original compositions from the Richmond, US-based artist. Across the past decade and a half DJ Aakmael has unveiled an impressive back catalogue of soul-drenched, dynamic deep house via revered imprints such as Uzuri, Church, Scissor & Thread, Freerange and Second Hand Records amongst many more. Here we see his latest material perfectly interlace with SlothBoogie Records own impressive back catalogue of bumping house and raw deep cuts. Leading the release is ‘Hardbody’, laid out across seven minutes with chopped brass samples, bright key sequences, modulating Moogesque resonant leads and shuffled drums before ‘Track 166’ shifts focus over to a deeper aesthetic via dubbed out chord swells, organic percussion and twinkling piano melodies. Active for over 25 years as a music journalist, writer and author of books, Giosuè Impellizzeri was, for a period, also a composer. Through several records recorded since 2002 as DJ Gio Mc-505, he has developed a sound obtained on the crossroads between chiptune, electro and synthetic disco with a few glimpses of funk, techno, house and EBM. Now completely dedicated to journalism, Impellizzeri has stopped creating music for over a decade. In the drawer, however, he still had unpublished tracks, written and produced in the past, and five of them now end up in this EP entitled "Saved From Oblivion": from the cinematic "Il Bacio" to the legoweltian "Jupiter Lander", from the biting "Picnic On Pluton" "to" Sexy Song "that plays with 80s synth pop up to cybernetics" The Eyes Of Memory "in which you can see trails of SID style. Invisible Inc once again presents another incredible full-length album from the talented Double Geography. Following on from 2020's “The Indoor Gardener”, the new LP “Open Water” is bathed in a similar blissful atmosphere...it would be appropriate to describe it as rather sublime.

Double Geography aka Duncan Thornley (one half of Weird Weather and studio engineer at MAP Studios), following the success of his debut album “The Indoor Gardener” (also on Invisible Inc) had sent Invisible Inc label boss GK Machine demos of his second and third album, which the label reluctantly declined on the basis that the music didn't sound quite right for the label. However, this fourth studio album fits the bill perfectly. Leaning towards the label's more ambient and laidback output, the album is themed around water, moving on and escape and sounds as unshackled and free-flowing as you'd expect...you can almost feel the breeze in the air and the sun on your skin.

The album is a progression from his previous releases, this time featuring several additional guest musicians, including stalwarts of the London jazz scene Greg Foat and Kaidi Akinnibi, to compliment Thornley's electronics...adding a complexity and depth to each of these compositions and an overall 'organic' quality that makes these new pieces sound like quite a departure from the first album. Fretless bass, clarinet, piano and saxophone decorate the music with refrains and melodies that have been enchanting our reveries since first hearing them.

“I wanted to incorporate some live musicians on this release so called upon some of the talent I'd worked with as an engineer at MAP Studios...that was the main drive behind the music for this release. The tracks are named after things that relate to either leaving behind canal boat living, e.g. Goodbye Great Escape (Great Escape was the name of our boat) or memories from a trip to Hydra, Greece. All sorta water related… On one of our walks around the island we ended up sharing a beach with Pierluigi Collina hence Famous Italian Referee! That track felt like the weirdest of the bunch so it got designated the weirdest name / memory!” (Duncan Thornley, March 2024)

Anonymous internet supergroup Drugface is going public, unmasking themselves as Multi Culti audiovisionary Thomas Von Party and Montreal cult legend John Shape, who absorbed the life rights to the Beaver Sheppard Story in an online game of Russian Roulette. If you’re reading this, the Von Party element probably makes so much sense that you’ll never forgive yourself for not realizing it sooner. The vibes, the production; it was there the whole time. Eagleeared listeners may have ID’d Shape from his Ricardo Villalobos-produced remix pack on Sei Es Drum, or as the singer in German instrumental band Brandt Brauer Frick. Those who guessed both members are now on some kind of list.
“In the Clouds” is the latest single from the secretly prolific duo, a synaesthetic window into a realm where everything tastes like data and everything sounds like mushrooms. Bside “On the Prowl” is a collaboration with Multi Culti vitamin-shaman Dreems, with the results entrusted to Finnish synth-lord Jori Hulkkonen to ensure everything holds up 9,000 years from now.
For the remixes, Simple Symmetry pull you through a wormhole to the sunny beaches of Moscow, The Beat Escape add massive doses of class and elegance. We tested these descriptions on 50 tastemaker chimps, and all 50 were still at least “somewhat jazzed” about hearing the tracks anyway.

Four slices of deep house with a distinctly laid back, R&B flavour to them. 'Brandii' kicks us off in suitably relaxed manner, gorgeous harmonies and female and male voices adding to the irresistible groove and subtle layer of strings. 'Black Sunshine' is faster but retains the light touch approach, whereas 'Chuckii' is built around a sturdier four-to-the-floor kick, although the vocal content is still silky smooth. Closing track 'No!' is woozier and more dreamlike, with almost p-funk synth lines, though the Earl's arrangement leaves the percussive undercarriage that carries the track plenty of room to thrive in too.

Th opener is awash with smoky pads and sombre chords over a mid-tempo and dusty groove, but things pick up on the second cut with its gorgeous r&b vocals swirling over warm and humid bass and drums as cosmic synth lines rise out of the mix. On the flip, there is a congo-heavy rhythm topped with a deft little r&b hook nice more and the closer brings more pumping grooves but still with a big heart. These are steamy backroom sounds of the highest order.

Earthboogie’s debut album, Human Call, rightly earned praise on its release earlier in the year, with listeners responding positively to its sticky and humid dancefloor fusions of African and South American rhythms, chunky dub disco, retro-futurist house, spacey analogue electronics and sun-kissed Balearica.
Hot on the heels of that release, Leng Records has sourced new remixes of two album highlights – “High Minded Man” and “Silken Moon” – from Running Back label boss Gerd Janson and synthesizer-wielding Balearic boogie stalwart Pete Herbert.
It’s Janson who steps up first, offering up two total overhauls of “High Minded Man” that re-cast the undulating, Afro-fired original as a dreamy, drum machine-driven chunks of vintage deep house goodness. Where Earthboogie’s album version bobbed and weaved around horns and live bass, Janson’s Deep House Mix places the duo’s original chanted vocals above a bouncy, polyrhythmic rhythm track, Larry Heard style chords, Kwaito-esque electronic bleeps and a smooth, soul-stroking bassline. Janson’s Deep House Dub, which strips out the vocal for a more sparse and ethereal listening experience, is also included on the EP.
The EP’s other remix comes from sometime Reverso 68 member Pete Herbert, who gets his mitts on previous single “Silken Moon”. While he retains some key elements from Earthboogie’s original – specifically the vocals, Afro guitars and house stabs – he naturally adds a little of his own rubbery electronic disco flavour via spacey synthesizer flourishes and a massive electronic bassline that brilliantly tracks the rising and falling movement of the main melody. It was May 2017 when Earthboogie’s debut release dropped on Leng. The soundsystem-loving East London duo rightly won praise for a fine EP that brilliantly joined the dots between all things intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal.
Having spent the last ten months recording their adventures, Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson return with “Silken Moon”, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Human Call. In typical fashion, “Silken Moon” cannily combines musical elements from a
myriad of styles – most notably Afro-disco, samba and mid-tempo Chicago house – to create a humid hybrid that defies easy categorization. There are bouncy organ riffs, undulating acid lines, clipped Afro-funk guitars, tons of tropical percussion and the chanted, carnival-friendly vocalizations of guest singer Nina Miranda.
The release comes backed with remixes from two members of the extended Leng family: long-serving producer Felix Dickinson and Turkish rising star Ali Kuru. Dickinson sticks close to the original of “Silken Moon” with a mix built around gently jacking machine drums and Earthboogie’s sweaty guitar licks while Kuru takes “Human Call” in an altogether more cosmic direction. Pushing the track’s psychedelic TB-303 lines and tropical textures to the fore whilst adding his own mind-altering electronics – most notably a fat new synth bassline – Kuru cleverly re-casts the track as a pulsating, late night throb-job.

Completing a trilogy of reissues from the Indipop label, Emotional Rescue celebrates its 10th Anniversary by looking again at the ground-breaking music of Steve Coe and his label. Founding Indipop in 1981 to debut the single of his new project, Monsoon and the soon to be hit 'Ever So Lonely' that brought to the world (dance) music stage the singing talents of young actress and vocalist, Sheila Chandra. Having worked with Steve right at the start of Emotional Rescue, it's fantastic his special mix of Indian Classical and Dance Pop under the spotlight once more, highlighting his role in helping to kick start the 1980s huge interest in world music, while achieving considerable commercial success and cross-appeal. The reissues of The Ganges Orchestra's The Dream (erc010) and Jhalib's Mysteries Of The East (erc029) were tinged with sadness as both Steve and John (Jhalib) passed shortly after each was released. Working with Sheila Chandra over a number of years, the idea to bring the sole East-West release back has been a long labour of love.

Only ever released as a white label promo in 1984, the reasons the song remained a mega rarity have been lost over-time; however, its sheer scarcity means it now trades for dizzying sums. Appearing later on compilations, here at last is the first-time full reissue of the Club and Dub Mixes, plus a long-form remix in 2 parts, by label honcho Chuggy. Possibly the most song based of Steve's projects working away from Sheila, he again teams up with Martin Smith to work with unknown vocalist Usha on what became an unfinished band project idea. Presented in Club Mix, they craft a one-off, uplifting sitar and bass heavy 80s disco-inspired "Klab hit", as well as the instrumental focused Dub Mix that accentuates the sitar play for a slower and steady build. As this project was painstakingly formed, the B side remix took shape, diving in to the studio with label affiliate DanyTyler Idjut Boys / Nad), rearranging the best of both mixes, extending and dubbing over 12 minutes of Indian Classical meets 80s Psychedelic clubland Ecstasy and is presented alongside a digital only bonus long Dub for the more nuanced minds.

With countless releases and remixes on Jiscomusic, Endless Flight, Crue-L, Sleazy Beats, Wolf Music, 7 Inches of Love & Home Taping, his eclectic and passion-fueled DJ sets have gained him a cult following worldwide. You could well describe him as one of the slo-mo disco edits scene’s heaviest hitters with his lush, deep, and generous grooves. L.J Simon met Eddie C while they were both residents at Neue Odessa Bar in Berlin. Simon played Eddie his original versions over lunch one sunny afternoon in 2020, then Eddie took the parts back to the studio and reworked them into something that would fit into the nights he was playing at. Algerian vocalist Idriss was on a long and challenging road before arriving in Berlin, traveling to the city from Algeria. His journey took him to Turkey initially, from there he took a boat to Greece, the boat holding more people than it could manage. The vessel went down in what seemed like the middle of the sea, and it was rescued by the Greek authorities. Idriss was still forced to endure even more adversity, before eventually making his way to the German city. It was in Berlin that Idriss met and formed a strong and joyous bond with L.J Simon. Both artists sharing a passion for the boogie-funk vibe, and so the collaboration began. The result is two cuts of sun-drenched, sexy, low-slung, goodness. It’s a vinyl only, special edition 7”, centered around this delectable pair of Eddie C’s disco flips.

In 2021, we welcomed Endrik Schroeder to the Bordello family with his Second Breath 12”. The memorable hooks and attention to detail that characterised his first appearance run deep in his latest. The Hope sees the French producer accompanied by a true legend of electronics, Caroline Hervé aka Kittin. Hervé’s penchant for combining brighter tones with darker shades is evident from the needle. Industrial hiss pierces swirling vocals. Clean claps, warm bass and crystalline chords give way to woe-streaked lyrics, lyrics that ascend into an arc of pulsating synthwave pain. Schroeder takes the reins on the flip. A beam of light is cast over throbbing arpeggios and a slicing snare, notes drifting ever higher as “The Dogs” takes hold. Strings swim as a spread of sounds grow, a palpable energy building under Schroeder’s watchful ear and hand in this seven minute plus odyssey into his machines.

Originally released in 2010 on their own label, Brooklyn nu-disco group Escort’s ‘Cocaine Blues’ is lovingly revisited by Glitterbox Recordings over a decade later, re-introducing the dancefloor essential to a new generation of disco fans. A loose remake of disco-reggae classic ‘Cocaine in My Brain’ by Jamaican DJ Dillinger, Escort’s ‘Cocaine Blues’ with its relaxed, disco approach and catchy vocal soon became a hit. Now arriving in a 12” package, up first, legend of NYC’s house and disco scene John Morales delivers his M+M Mix. A long-time friend of Glitterbox, this is John’s first release on the imprint, with the signature sparkling sound that brought him to prominence in the 80s sounding fresh as ever on this remix. Up next, original Escort member JKriv revisits the track on his funk-filled Disco Bumps Mix, before regular Roísín Murphy collaborator Crooked Man delivers his Crooked Line 1 and Crooked Line 2 versions, gloriously deep fuelled by bumping bass and attitude. After a false start or two, Ess O Ess have finally joined the Kinfolk stable with a thunderous release featuring Laura Lee of Khruangbin fame.
Totem is the name and four versions is the game.
Starting off, the original mix is a wailing guitar-heavy psyche rock out that sees Laura Lee's vocals carrying it across a peyote-filled landscape.
Saul's Swamp Crawl version sees the slow 'n' heavy rock elements kept in the mix but with added electronic flourishes. Head nodding is an optional extra.
The Hardway Brothers decided to tune in with the spirit of Johnny Jenkins and haul it through New Orleans via a pit stop at John Carpenter's desert holiday home.
Otologic bring up the rear with an altogether different take by donning their finest digi dub garb and take it as far away as they can from it's psyche out beginnings
