Last year, we got together with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision’s RE:VIVE initiative for the second time, inviting four local artists to breathe new life into four archival films from the Sound and Vision and EYE Filmmuseum archives. Jordan GCZ, Suzanne Kraft, Parrish Smith and Upsammy were all assigned short animated films dating back to 1921. The films and their new scores debuted at EYE on August 2nd as part of Dekmantel Festival 2018. Unsurprisingly, each artist imparted their unique styles onto the films that they previously had no relation with. From Suzanne Kraft's sparse atmospherics that have become more apparent in his new SK U KNO project to Jordan GCZ’s free flowing hardware jams. Parrish Smith showed his contemplative side and sparse orchestrations that he demonstrated on his RE:VIVE release, Genesis Black, a sonic departure from his bombastic releases and DJ-sets while upsammy showed yet again her deft hand for melody and texture, a style that dominates all her releases to date.
These four scores can live apart from their films, fitting seamlessly into each artists' growing catalogs of work. But when combined, it’s as if the films and music were made simultaneously with the artist and filmmaker together in the same room. Dekmantel and RE:VIVE are proud to present these new works as the electronic music scene in The Netherlands continues to show its multifaceted talent that continues to expand far beyond the dance floor.

After the release of the successful soundtrack for the TV series Gomorra (which was aired outside Italy as well) the Italian combo Mokadelic returns with a brand new score, Sulla Mia Pelle, for one the most controversial movies around. Based on the despicable history of Stefano Cucchi, literally killed in prison by a bunch of policemen, the album renews the cinematic style of Mokadelic through a series of almost dramatic instrumental sketches. Equally informed by the post-rock of luminaries such as Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky - not to mention the subtle rhythms of contemporary IDM (Boards Of Canada first came to mind) - the band delivers their signature with several epic moments. That is the real companion to a tragic feature film.

Stanley Kubrick has a troubled past with Deerhoof. An argument over whether Eyes Wide Shut was good almost broke up the band in 1999 and again in 2003. When Famous Class suggested a 7" of music from The Shining, the band waffled for three years about whether they thought they could do it justice. But once a Halloween release date was proposed, Deerhoof couldn't resist. They got the score to Bartok's "Music For Strings, Percussion and Celesta" out of the library, and transcribed one of the 20s songs straight from the closing credits. Music that in the movie echoed from some ghostly, gilded past takes on a more urgent character in Deerhoof's versions, as if to underscore that the horrors of white supremacy, oligarchy, and domestic abuse are alive and well in 2018 America.

Lawa is the acronym for the duo of Austrian soundtrack wizards Alain Leonard and Alex Wank. Once again they are honouring the world of film music in their idiosyncratic, very personal way. After their first Cineploit release, "Omaggio a Lucio Fulci and Fabio Frizzi“ (Exploit 02, 2012, Vinyl only) and the follow up, "Omaggio a Riz Ortolani“ (Exploit 06, 2015, Vinyl only) Lawa now takes a ride through the furthest reaches of '70s and '80s French and Italian cinema. From Michel Colombier, Michel Legrand and Jacques Revaux to Alessandro Alessandroni, Daniele Patucchi, Nico Catanese and G & M de Angelis, every base is covered. And, of course, not to forget the Master of them all: Ennio Morricone (rip).

These very special tracks have been renewed in Lawa's dark electronic style, proving without a doubt the high-level craft of the composers extraordinaire that created them. Some versions are close to the original, but others have acted as springboards for new ideas and creations. This release is probably Lawa's final reinterpretation of classic obscure film scores, as Messrs Leonard and Wank are creating more and more of their own atmospheric soundtrack music for documentaries, shorts and feature films - hopefully soon to be released via Cineploit as well. During his long and illustrious career the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry created a lare amount of incidental music to accompany literary texts, both on record and for the stage, from Jules Verne to Victor Hugo, from Lautréamont to Antonin Artaud. This incredibly rare LP from 1959 is a radio play about the life of French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint Exupéry, based on the 1956 book by Luc Estang on the subject. The interpreters are a small theater troupe including French actor Paul Meurisse (1912-1979), famous for popular films and as a member of national theater company, La Comédie Française. Underlying key scenes, Pierre Henry’s contribution to the play consists of electronic and musique concrète sounds, adding a contemporary dimension to the text. A beautiful piece from one of the mid-20th century's truly brilliant sonic explorers.

As the then new VHS market was completely unregulated, these editions were not required to be submitted to the BBFC, meaning the releases were completely uncensored - soon leading to the "video nasties" outrage. Today these tapes are sought after items on the collector's market. With his Cineploit debut, Magnus Sellergren set out to further and improve on the concept of Videogram's previous "S/T" 2014 album. Inspiration was drawn from the same sources as the previous full length effort, with the key words being bigger, better, and more produced. The result is an album created during a six-month period, between January and June 2015, starting with a total of thirty-some tracks that were written, then re-written - in some cases even completely rearranged - polished, and ?nally whittled down to a thirteen-track, 40+ minute full length LP/CD. Starting off with the now-familiar Videogram idents, Pre-Cert covers an assortment of classic genre-in?uenced sounds; from occult horror, 1980s Cannon action, thrillers and post-apocalyptics to "cannibal freakouts" (as he affectionately calls them), Italian-produced erotica, 1970s Spanish horror, the iconic Friday the 13th series and climaxing with a mammoth ?ve-part, 13-minute tribute to John Carpenter's sci-? horror classic "The Thing". The journey Videogram started in 2014 is now taking a huge step forward, offering the same amount of affection for the VHS format and genres as his previous efforts, but more focused, polished and well executed!

Suite Crude Revue is a rotating cast of outstanding performers committed to an unshackled aesthetic. Produced, composed, and arranged by Daniel Zelonky, this single presents songs for imagined films. “Cowpoke Detox” might be termed “spaghetti jazz”. It’s a strange hybrid of spaghetti western style baritone guitar lines supporting jazz noir harmonies, creating a surreal backdrop for the tale of an unrepentant murderer, who feels regret only in terms of the consequences he’s facing. “Blue Ramen #1” is a lover’s lament, set to what might be termed a “Hollywood samba”: One imagines Los Angeles session players emulating samba for a commercial film, not an authentic Brazilian band. The lush aural environment culminates in a dreamy closing vamp with the impassioned vocal set amid a swirl of improvised trumpet, violin, and piano. This haunting, yet ironic song may well have found its way into the popular consciousness ... if the movie had actually existed! This record breaks the mold of history-conscious record making, eschewing the slavish copying of past styles which has become so common, and exemplifying the label’s stated mission of “Reimagining a futuristic past” where “weird vistas of fresh possibilities unfold before us...” Very limited edition on vinyl.

Shunsuke Kikuchi is one of the best-known composers of background music for Japanese television and film soundtracks. Born in 1931 in Hirosaki, located in the far north of the main Japanese island of Honshu, Kikuchi enjoyed a long and illustrious career that began in the early 1960s, having presided over dozens of popular soundtracks into the new millennium, including those for the Dragon Ball series as well as various Gamera monster films. A graduate of the Nihon University College of Fine Arts and Music, Kikuchi is largely associated with anime and effects-laden tokusatsu films, along with action dramas, and jidaigeki period films. Whether crafting up-tempo action themes or slow background pieces for long-running television series, establishing the reputation that any television show featuring his music was bound to hit. One of his songs, “Urami Bushi,” from the Female Convict Scorpion series, ended up in the soundtrack of Kill Bill. He is the recipient of various awards, including a lifetime achievement award, granted in 2015 at the Japan Record Awards. The Hurricane Polymar series of action anime was initiated in 1974, the plot concerning a crime fighter with a special suit that allows him to change shape while wearing it. This soundtrack album is drawn from the original 1974 TV series, with all manner of tense music for fight scenes, heroic fanfares saluting our here and other semi-electronic incidental interludes, highlighting the irresistible allure of Kikuchi’s atmospheric compositions

Futuristic synthesizer specialist and sound designer Matsuo Ohno was responsible for the sound design of a broad range of film, television and radio soundtracks, most famously the animation series Astro Boy, which he began working on in 1963, together with his assistant, Takehisa Kosugi. Ohno was born in the heavily-populated Kanda district of central Tokyo in 1930 and was heavily affected by the repeated bombing raids on the city enacted in World War II, which took place during his formative years. After the War, deeply motivated by philosophy and Surrealism, he was largely unaffected by popular music, other than the
electronic abstractions of Karlheinz Stockhausen; the left-wing filmmaker Fumio Kamei was another early influence. Ohno began immersing himself in the realm of sound effects while working with the Bungaku-za modernist theatre troupe and he performed a similar function at NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting corporation, but became so frustrated by the rigidity of the restrictions imposed on him there that he quit his prestigious post at the broadcaster, although his skills were such that he remained in high demand as a freelancer, which allowed
him to refine his sound effects techniques with evolving analogue synthesizers. The five suites of tracks that make up the album Roots Of Electronic Sound album were recorded between 1963 and 1966; initially released on the ALM label in 1975, it is comprised of brief
tape experiments, the cover artwork fittingly representing Astro Boy, from which many of the audio interludes are taken.

At the precise moment that international audiences saw that cute little baldy poke his retractable neck around the corner and started stealing beer from the fridge, demanding long distance phone calls while circuit bending kids toys and frankly not looking after the plants... the human race was hooked! and we wanted more! more! more! When Spielberg regrettably told interviewers that he had no intention of making a sequel to E.T. Originally issued in 2011, Ashcan Copy is the third instalment in Rashomon's Film Music series of LPs. Cineploit Records is proud to present this re-release, and to introduce the record to a wider audience than the 150 lucky souls who snagged a copy of the ultra-limited initial release on Hlava Records.
Active since 2009, Rashomon is the solo project of Matt Thompson, also of Cineploit mainstays Zoltan. This is his second release on the label under the Rashomon name, following 2014's LP/DVD extravaganza The Cameraman's Revenge: Film Music Vol. 4 – the final release in the Film Music series to date.
The previous edition to this, 2009's The Finishing Line: Film Music Vol. 2, had focused on re-creating the psychological mind-state of the wilder end of 1970s British public information films. By way of change Ashcan Copy is presented as an album of soundtrack cues from films that were, for one reason or another, never released. The films, hailing from Italy, Japan and the USA (among others) supposedly date from the 1950s to the 1970s, and were (according to the extensive sleeve notes) exactingly sourced from film archives across Europe.
In reality, all the music is self-composed. The eight tracks include elements of noise, folk, psychedelia, prog and noir-jazz within their elaborate constructions, created with a panoply of instrumentation including Mellotron, zither, home-made percussion, Fender Rhodes, harmonium, MiniMoog and more. Delicate and sensuous, heavy and oppressive – the record negotiates these musical contradictions while retaining a single-minded pursuit of strangeness and surprise.
Having finally found its spiritual home on soundtrack specialist label Cineploit, Ashcan Copy can at last be heard by all.
