German post-metal formation THE Ocean will release their new album "Holocene" in May 2023, as usual there is an instrunemtal album available as well. With Holocene, The Ocean add the new and final chapter in their paleontologically inspired album series. This time, the hardness of the collective is extended by some electronic dimensions. Founded at the beginning of the millennium, the group of musicians around guitarist Robin Stapps has not lost its intensity even after more than 20 years. The Ocean come together each time with a shared vision of boundless sonic exploration, never standing still, the band enjoys a stellar reputation in the genres of post-rock, progressive metal and even hardcore. Robin Staps commented on the final work in the Paleontological album series: "Holocene is an appendix to the 2 Phanerozoic albums and Precambrian, or the final and concluding chapter, making it a quadrilogy if you will. It deals with the Holocene, the most recent and shortest chapter in Earth's history, but essentially it's an album about fear, alienation, the loss of reason and critical thinking, the rise of conspiracy theories and the deconstruction of values in modernity." On the creation process and electronic basis of the new tracks, he adds: "The writing process of every album we've ever done started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drum beat or a vocal idea. This album is different because every single song is based on a musical idea originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synthesizer). He came up with these amazing synth parts that sounded great even in pre-production, and he sent me some of these raw, unfinished ideas in the middle of "Lockdown 2020"... and even though it was all electronic, it had this definite Ocean vibe to it. I immediately wanted to pick up my guitar.... And I did, and it wasn't long before we had an inspiring creative exchange that went in completely unforeseen but very exciting directions." Photosynthesis is a concept album about how plants convert sunlight into energy, how they transform carbon dioxide into the oxygen that all fauna need to breathe. The album’s eight tracks each deal with an aspect of photosynthesis, from the macro “Water” to the micro “Palisades,” which reflects the theme of botanical lungs on a microscopic level. The album culminates with “Oxygen,” holding high the imagery of “Verdant Alveolus Diaspora,” the album’s core visual theme, depicting the world’s forests as a functioning lung system’s individual cells, scattered throughout the globe. Photosynthesis is the fourth “collective” album in Botanist’s greater discography, meaning it is composed of a group of individuals. Band originator Otrebor (hammered dulcimers, vocals, keyboards) composed the music and lyrics to the drums of returning member Daturus (Botanist’s live drummer since 2017, who played on 2019’s Ecosystem) and new bassist Tony Thomas. Photosynthesis sees Botanist returning to The Flenser stable, whose partnership yielded three albums, including 2014’s VI: Flora, perhaps the project’s most noteworthy work. This release was recorded in the Verdant Realm in California. The album production was handled by Dan Swanö, a musician whose legend is equally for his enormous contributions to the Swedish melodic and progressive death metal scenes in the ’90s and ’00s, as he is for his output of top-shelf album productions from his Unisound studio. The application of Swanö’s creative genius in more artistic, avant-garde areas of the metal spectrum is a match of dreams for Botanist, resulting in an album that achieves a new level of the project’s expanding vision with production excellence.

Los Angeles based outfit THE GHOST INSIDE is poised to release their fifth studio album. The self-titled album is a true triumph over adversity. The band was involved in a shocking road collision one tragic night in November 2015; a truck crashed into the band's tour bus near El Paso, Texas, killing both the bus driver and truck driver as well as leaving vocalist Jonathan Vigil, guitarist Zach Johnson, and drummer Andrew Tkaczyk in critical condition. Tkaczyk was in a coma for 10 days and eventually lost his right leg. The metalcore heroes have spent the past four years recovering, with each member documenting their recovery process openly. In February 2019, the band released a video featuring some new music they were working on in the studio. Shortly thereafter, they also announced their first concert since the bus crash. It was to be a "one time only" event to take place in August in Los Angeles. 7000 tickets sold out within five minutes after they went on sale on March 1st. Bassist Jim Riley speaks of the writing process for the new album, "For anyone that has followed the story of THE GHOST INSIDE for the last 5 years, one line in "Aftermath" sums it all up: "Triumph over tragedy". We went into the writing process knowing full well that every song and every lyric would be influenced by what we've been through, but we tried our best for them to be relatable to everyone. With "Aftermath" we let it be much more personal - this one is us telling OUR story. So when it was time to choose a first song to share with the world, it felt right for it to be "Aftermath". It allows anyone that listens into our world, but it also lets us put final punctuation on that chapter of our lives. "Aftermath" is a total catharsis for us. We let it all out in the song so that it's not bottled up inside us anymore and we can heal and move on, since after all, the beat goes on".

Configuracao Do Lamento is a sound riot, a trance-inducing cacophony, a body-shaking mix of percussive rhythms and bending guitars. The seventh album by São Paulo, Brazil’s Deaf Kids is harmful for the weak-minded. An experimental mile marker on the band’s journey, it is as treacherous on the ears as hypnotic to the mind. Expanding the band’s D-beat origins, these eight tracks vacillate between demonic fever dreams, orgies of acidic guitars and percussive taunting. Sometimes songs are not songs anymore, but assaults which clatter and hum like rough metallic windchimes in gale force winds.

The band was formed in 2010 in the industrial city of Volta Redonda / Rio de Janeiro as a solo fuzz-soaked blend of crust / D-beat before bass and drums were added. Seven years, seven releases, two European tours, gigs across Brazil and more than one hundred shows later, the band remains steadfast on a path of sonic mind control. Their releases explore different takes on the hypnotic rhythms that comprise D-beat. When the band moved together to São Paulo, they began to blend each member’s musical and aesthetic taste with a common interest in mesmerizing grooves and psychedelic rhythms from around the globe. They now produce overwhelming, sensory-driven dirges that carry a Brazilian (and Latin American) imprint. Deaf Kids is the legitimate bastard child of colonial chaos—trapped here and there, between both complementary and opposing worldviews, trying to balance the intensity and conflicted human condition.

Hissing and Sutekh Hexen are two of the murkiest, most cacophonous groups operating in the margins of the contemporary metal underground. Now, these hellish projects come together to release a split album on The Flenser.

Since 2008, Sutekh Hexen have turned the paradigm of black metal completely on its ear. The group creates what can be described as a dense tapestry of black noise, or a wall of intricate tones deconstructing itself brick by brick. Their rich, unparalleled compositions cultivate further interest with each listen.

Founded in 2014 out of a mutual interest in deranged and punishing sounds, Seattle’s Hissing is often described as “blackened sludge.” This does little justice describing the harsh, dissonant soundscapes created by this trio. To date they have released two EPs through Disorder Recordings and Southern Lord, and have a full-length forthcoming.

San Francisco’s Succumb plumbs the depths of modern death metal with primitive elegance, but what sets them apart from their peers is vocalist Cheri Musrasrik. The juxtaposition of death metal riffing and propulsive drums with Musrasrik’s cavernous howl and sophisticated lyrics make a unique listening experience in today’s crowded landscape.

The band was formed in 2014 by a group of friends with diverse musical backgrounds who share a common love for Canadian death metal, war metal, and 1990s Napalm Death. That same year they released a demo under the name Cloak and played a handful of local shows, attracting the attention of The Flenser. The following year they were joined by Harry Cantwell (Bosse-de-Nage, ex-Slough Feg) on drums and got to work writing their self-titled debut album, recorded by Bay Area luminary Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Bosse-de-Nage, Botanist, Oathbreaker, etc.).

Musrasrik cites authors and poets like Yeats, Genet and Zola as her primary lyrical influences. Throughout the album she tackles themes such as human experimentation, autoerotic asphyxiation, BDSM, prostitution, opium dens and dystopias with a literary flair.

A new band from the uprising Norwegian Metal scene. Singer David Rosario was looking for someone to record his songs with. The chemistry with guitarist Stein Hjertholm and drummer Per-Helge Bruvoll was perfect, so they recorded a 3-song demo and the idea of Rozario was born. This was just before the pandemic and of course all activities were very limited. They took advantage of their time and focused on songwriting and finding the direction of the band, with all three contributing songwriting. Rozario then teamed up with producer Trond Holter (Wig Wam, Holter, Jorn, etc.). During the recordings, the line-up of the band was completed by the young guitar virtuoso Johan Jamtfall and the bassist Anders Halsan Engum.
