Grunts as stones (think of Officium Triste) and clear vocals surrounded by the feeling of misery, all in a thick wall of sound mastered by mighty Dan Swanö at Unisound AB and exquisite and old school artwork. Orthodox was born as a trio in Seville, Spain at the end of 2004. Starting from doom metal and absorbing influences from drone, jazz, and extreme metal, the band represents one of the most relevant but unpredictable bands of the Spanish metal underground. After breaking through the international underground with their Gran Poder debut LP in 2006, Orthodox has released another six studio albums, multiple EPs, splits, singles, and more, released through respected labels like Southern Lord, Utech Records, God Unknown, and long-running allies, Alone Records. Since 2014, Orthodox has operated as a duo, with bassist/vocalist Marco Serrato and drummer Borja Díaz handling all recording and live performances. However, Proceed sees the return of guitarist Ricardo Jiménez to the lineup for the first time since 2011’s Baal. To capture this mammoth album, in November 2021, Billy Anderson (Sleep, Melvins, High On Fire, Om, Neurosis, EyeHateGod) was flown to La Mina Studios in Sevilla, Spain, and recorded the album with assistant engineers Raúl Pérez and Nacho García. Anderson mixed the record at his Everything Hz back in Portland, Oregon, after which it was sent to Justin Weiss at Trakworx in San Francisco, California for mastering. Proceed was completed with artwork and illustrations by Fernando Rivas and layout/design by José Postigo. Proceed represents Orthodox's return to its original essence, but also a step forward as a band. After a multitude of different projects around the band and a long way traveled, they are back to reel off heavy riffs like a three-headed juggernaut. Orthodox has performed at international festivals such as Hellfest, Roadburn, Supersonic, Amplifest, Primavera Sound, and many others, has collaborated with artists as diverse as Julian Cope and flamenco dancer Israel Galván, and has opened for Voïvod, High On Fire, Corrosion Of Conformity, and countless more.

Unmaker, the 3rd album by Copenhagen's LLNN, is a stupefyingly unforgiving affair: abrasive and vile, at times effervescent and escharotic, and finally absolutely smothering, suffocating, terminal. LLNN burst onto the scene with 2016's critically acclaimed debut album "Loss“, a sheer display of "absolute raging rawness“, as Terrorizer put it... But there is more to their sound than that: „the wavering drone synths that are effortlessly merged with a raw hardcore-driven darkness define the subtle idiosyncratic nuances of LLNN's very unsubtle, painfully overwhelming sound“ (The Sludgelord). After European tours with Bison, performances at festivals like Roskilde, Roadburn and Arctangent and a split EP with WOVOKA, LLNN returned with sophomore album "Deads“ in 2018, an album that felt more compact, yet more complex and organic all at the same time. When it comes to the musicality of HANGING GARDEN, words are only second choice. At least the words that try to describe the songs of this Finnish band and their overall artistic aesthetic. The group’s approach to their art is based on emotion. Everything revolves around authenticity, honesty and unreserved openness. All this characterizes “Skeleton Lake”, whose progression is often implicit and whose direction of effect is sometimes suggestive. There is no right or wrong here. The connection to the seventh album of the Finns presents itself inevitably. Although the playing of HANGING GARDEN tends to be gloomy and melancholic, from to time, the songs also seem optimistic or even euphoric. Since Riikka Hatakka joined the band as a permanent vocalist on “Into That Good Night” (2019), the musical picture has partially brightened and, additionally, the sound cosmos of the Finns has broadened noticeably. The resulting impressions seem manifold and even more emotional.

In early 2021, Eroded comes as a strong, hopeful voice expressing the suppressed yearning for an end of this madness which we all carry inside.

Back in 2012 LIZZARD recorded with Rhys Fulber in L.A. (Paradise Lost, Fear Factory, Front Line Assembly...) who confesses his love for their "marvelous poly-rhythmical sound". It is true that LIZZARD's songwriting is distinguished by at times intricate rhythmical patterns, but these are always woven into the fabric of immensely catchy song constructs. The technical prowess here is well concealed behind the glaring allure of the immediacy of raw, in your face rock music.

Formed in 2006, when Katy Elwell (drums), William Knox (bass) and Mathieu Ricou (guitar & vocals) met and discovered that they shared a common vision in music, LIZZARD soon set out to work on their sound with a mission to find their own idiosyncratic approach to contemporary rock music – music that makes confident reference to the past without romanticising it. In many ways, Eroded is a trip back to the best parts of the 90's, but in the sound of 2020.

Sophomore album Majestic was released in 2014 and met with great critical acclaim: a more spontaneous and raw affair compared to its predecessor, recorded live and produced by the band themselves, the album captures the intense energy the band unleashes on stage. “We’re very much a live band creatively speaking”, says bass player Will Knox. “All of the writing sessions happen in our rehearsal space rather than at home. We believe that to capture any vibe, the chemistry between members needs to occur in real time... at least for us.”

Shift (produced, mixed and engineered by Peter Junge), released in 2018, opened new doors for the French trio: “Lizzard accomplish the perfect balancing act between music that is challenging and catchy in equal measure”, Metal Hammer raved. The band opened for Gojira and Terry Bozzio who invited them to perform on Drum Channel, and embarked on month-long European tours with the likes of HIGH ON FIRE, THE PINEAPPLE THIEF and the ADRIAN BELEW POWER TRIO.

Recorded during a long month of voluntary isolation at the legendary Castle Studios in Germany, Eroded brings a light at the end of the tunnel: “The vibe on the album is generally one of hope and an invitation to stay alert to the light within ourselves, and to keep moving towards brighter destinations.”

Bring on the future and for once, let it be the past, as we knew it before the pandemic.

The group was formed by Amadeus Galiano (electric guitars), Emilia Moncayo (voice/sampling) and Filippo Brandrimarte (drums) in Bologna, Italy, in 2012 maintaining this lineup until the return to Ecuador. In December 2016, the band was joined by Carlos Sánchez, the actual drummer of the band, in 2017. It is an experimental metal project influenced by math, breakcore and Latin music that mixes polyrhythmic structures with minimalist guitar riffs. Emilia and Amadeus initially created the band with the idea of making a thrash metal band, however, it evolved into a somewhat different style. Complicated grooves as well as aggressive and suddenly demented vocal lines resulted in an exposition of Latin American rhythms in their most brutal form. The pro-ject is essentially a mixture between thrash, djent and experimental metal. In 2017 the band signed with the record label Subsound Records and released their first album Imago.

Dutch metal band Celestial Season have had quite the trajectory. Originally an early death/doom metal band, having released their first material in 1992, the band developed a romantic, violin-led sound which partially mirrored (but mostly coincidentally existed with) the classic Peaceville sound. Releasing two gothic/death/doom metal albums in the early-to-mid 1990s (please check out Solar Lovers), Celestial Season abruptly shifted to a more stoner-oriented sound, casting off their original doom metal sound for half a decade before folding in 2001.The year 2011 brought about Celestial Season's surprise return, but the past eleven years have only given birth to one album. 2020's The Secret Teachings, which brought about the return of their original, sad sound. In 2022, we are blessed with yet another Celestial Season album. Mysterium I is, to my delight, a further continuation of that classic 1990s gloomy doom sound. Featuring a heavier approach, especially in its chorus, lead single and Mysterium I opener "Black Water Mirrors," which was intiially released as a flexi by Decibel Magazine, balances death/doom's immensity with a tender touch and emotional core. It's like their stoner period never even happened at all.

Growing up with Bathory’s epic era in their hearts it was inevitable that the music Ereb Altor were to create was going to be influenced by their house gods. So with Bathory’s anthems as their spiritual foundation they set out to create an own branch of the so called ”Epic Viking metal” genre. However a few years after the inception of the band it went on hiatus and only after more than a decade Mats and Ragnar decided to breathe new life into their sleeping beauty. A recording was done late 2003 with some of the over ten years old songs (slightly modified). The demo was named “Awakening”. The songs were put online for people to listen and it was also pressed in aprox 100 copies with a color layout. The response was great but nevertheless n proper album was never unleashed, and the years passed... But in early 2007 Mats and Ragnar heeded the call from the one eyed old man and went into studio Apocalypse in Gävle to record a full-length album, without having a record deal, hoping that someone was willing to release it. Needless to say we at I Hate jumped at the chance, cause this is first class heavy metal, meaningful, epic, heavy, melodic, melancholic and true to the style created by Bathory, Scald and Doomsword with elements of Candlemass and Isole. Put simply; if you have the slightest affinity for musical grandeur ”By Honour” will put a berserkers grin on your face!
