New York City has the historical significance for being the world's melting pot and churning out an amalgamation of cultural diversity. The evolution of New York Hardcore epitomizes the primordial ooze that is generated from mixing of multi styles of heavy music. As the early days of New York Hardcore transitioned from the 80's into the '90's, it's hard to deny the growing influence of metal on the classic hardcore sounds. With bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of it All, Leeway melding their hardcore and punk roots with brash metal riffs, driving drums and signature breakdowns, a new genre of "cross-over" born. The music was hard, fast and melodic. It truly was an amazing period in hardcore music history. New York's Merauder was no exception. Forming in 1990, their cross-over style quickly propelled them to the forefront of the Nyhc scene and beyond. Merauder's musical style was well ahead of their time. The lyrics were deep and insightful. The musicianship was hailed as the next level of hardcore as they weaved in elements of metal with the "in-your-face" New York attitude. For the first time ever, the early Merauder recordings have been compiled into one release, immortalized on tangible formats, confirming the internet folklore about the existence of these recordings. Vocalist, Marco "Minus" Rodriguez became known for his commanding vocal style and scene presence. Add in original members, Javier "sob" Carpio, "Karate" Chris Bozeth, Eamon Carney and Vinny Vitale, Merauder quickly dominated the early 1990's music scene and beyond. Merauder "The Minus Years" is a capture of New York hardcore nostalgia. For those that were there, these recordings will certainly refresh memories that have been tucked way in the memory bank for many years. For those that are relatively new to the hardcore culture, The Minus Years is a time-machine into where so many new hardcore and metal bands have been influenced by. The recordings are raw and analog. The energy that was captured is not masked by overdubs and over-production. Simply, five dudes in a room and when the "red" record button was enabled, history was made.

Këkht Aräkh is the Ukrainian project founded in 2018 by Dmitry Marchenko. The debut album Night & Love was initially released on the Finnish label Livor Mortis in 2019 and it's now seeing a worldwide reissue via Brooklyn label Sacred Bones.Dmitry's intent to experiment with standard black metal canons previously seen at play in Through the Branches to Eternity EP (2018) solidify further on Night & Love, he mentions "back then I had an idea of combining Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger type of black metal with early Internazionale or Croatian Amor vibe."Described as ambient or atmospheric black metal, this debut presents Këkht Aräkh's signature dichotomy of harsh traditional early Norwegian black metal and the more ethereal and delicate melodies. On the other hand the lyrics are romantic and melancholic, clearly influenced by a stark Gothic imagery, and serve as an extra layer of mystery to the already suggestive body of work. The album beings with a soft acoustic intro in "As the Night Falls_" before descending into the raw and raucous "Elegy for the Memory of Me" and "Den Venstre Hånd På Den Hoyre", both songs that are drenched in the more traditional black metal style of raspy, high-pitched vocals, dense, tremolo- picked riffs and fast paced drums. It is however songs like "Night" and "Love" that really set this album apart. "Night" is a softly spoken word ambient track that with a beautiful piano synth work that permeates throughout it aids in the romantic delivery and conjuring of imagery of the night. "Love" is a spellbinding and melancholic song, equal in its romanticism but one that displays a deeper sorrow and tenderness supported by calming field recordings of trickling water.The intertwining of black metal, dark folk and ambient repeats itself, culminating in a quietly hummed outro "...And Never Ends (Eternal Love)" that alludes to and completes the album's first track.

Tankard wurde 1982 gegründet und ist eine deutsche Thrash Metal Band aus Frankfurt am Main. Neben Kreator, Destruction und Sodom, zählen sie zu den „Big Four“ des deutschen Thrash Metals. Stilistisch im Thrash Metal zuhause thematisieren ihre Songs vor allem Alkohol. Mit „Zombie Attack“ veröffentlichten sie im Juli 1986 ihr erstes Album. Ein Jahr später, im Oktober 1987, folgte ihr zweites Album, „Chemical Invasion“ und 1988 „The Morning After“. Nachdem der erste Schlagzeuger, Oliver Werner, die Band verlassen hatte und durch Arnulf Tunn ersetzt wurde, erschienen die drei Alben: “The Meaning of Life”, “Stone Cold Sober” und “Two-Faced”. Zur Gleichen Zeit veröffentlichten Tankard das Live Album: „Fat, Ugly and Live“. Anschließend wechselte sich das Line Up der Band erneut. Im Mai 1994 wurde Arnulf Tunn durch Olaf Zissel ersetzt, welcher bis zum heutigen Tage die Drums spielt. Ein Jahr später sah sich ein weiteres Gründungsmitglied, Axel Katzmann, gezwungen die Band zu verlassen, aufgrund einer Arthrose Erkrankung im Handgelenk. Im selben Jahr veröffentlichte die Band „The Tankard“, welches ihr letztes Album mit Noise war. Jetzt feiert die Band ihr 40-jähriges Jubiläum, spielt Gigs auf der ganzen Welt, recorded und veröffentlicht neue Musik.

Këkht Aräkh is the Ukrainian project founded in 2018 by Dmitry Marchenko. Originally released on the Finnish label Livor Mortis in 2021, Pale Swordsman goes to even greater extents in building a bold and atmospheric sonic palette, and it's now seeing a worldwide reissue via Brooklyn label Sacred Bones.For the sound design of the album, Dmitry was inspired by The Stooges' Raw Power to deliver a more soft sounding album, decisively less "metal". Traditional black metal song structures still persist in songs like "Night Descends" and "In The Garden". However, their rawness and fast tempos is quickly cut through by dark ambient passages in "Amor" and "Intro" and softly played desolate ballads like "Nocturne" and "Lily".The crown jewel is the album closer "Swordsman", a track that displays a superb gothic sensibility, a poem recited over a deeply melancholic piano melody. "The Christian concept of a person ridding themselves of evil to find inner peace or to be able to leave this world safely has become the core inspiration for the song." Dmitry explains "However, this is not the only reading possible. I purposely avoid specifics in my lyrics so that the listener can always give the song their own meaning."The inspiration for the concept of the album also came from David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. "I really enjoy it when an album tells a story about some character so I came up with one." says Dmitry when explaining the origin of the Pale Swordsman. The character is portrayed on the striking album cover art - a figure sitting aloof with a sword and a rose in each hand - and clearly symbolises the romantic juxtaposition of belligerence and fragile beauty that permeates the album's sound and atmosphere.Pale Swordsman delivers a foreboding yet bittersweet melancholy through poetic lyrics, soft interludes, raw and distorted guitars, eerie drums and harsh vocals - a fragile yet potent mix that successfully amplifies the ambience.

A Tzompantli, in bygone days, was a rack used to display human skulls, often of enemies or sacrifices, in several Mesoamerican civilizations. In 2022, Tzompantli is a beyond crushing Death Doom war march built on a bedrock of Native / Indigenous themes, rituals and history, illuminating the splendor, brutality and despair within.

Nearly three years after the band’s self-released EP, Tzompantli’s debut full length presents the first smoke-conjured specter to manifest materially. ‘Tlazcaltiliztli’, a ritual ceremony that translates to; ‘nourishing the fire and sun with blood’, is imbued with the spirit of Native inspiration that dwells deep within the heart and soul of the project and is skillfully weaved into a traditional bludgeoning framework of spine-severing savagery and melancholic anguish. On the ritualistic ‘Eltequi’ (to cut the chest open and extract the heart as an offering) the band’s unification of native / folk instrumentation and heaviness becomes one in the same, opening vast new horizons for where this sound can go.

‘Tlazcaltiliztli’ is dedicated, and an offering, to the indigenous peoples, nations & tribes of the North, South, East & West of the American continents. It marks a fearsome and spirited new vision for the Death Metal underground.

The Body has been an iconic force in heavy music for over 2 de- cades with a long history of collaborations. Recent collaborators include Bummer, Full of Hell, Thou, Uniform. Lee Buford from The Body is also in Manslaughter 777 and Sightless Pit. Big| Brave have a singular voice in heavy music, honed over 5 albums The Body and Big|Brave are both bands possessed with an unequaled ability to convey overwhelming weight with simplicity, repetition, and detailed sonic atmospheres; artists who continue to alter the definition of what it means to be a heavy band. The Body are consistently prolific while increasingly ambitious as untethered producers and collaborators. Big|Brave shape sound with dense waves of guitar and feedback, minimalist and hypnotic crashes, and emotionally exacting vocal melodies. In collaboration, The Body and Big|Brave shift the gravity of their compositions to woven layers of percussion and unspooling guitars that sprawl through stark frameworks of earthy folk. Their debut collaborative album Leaving None But Small Birds distills the two ensembles' pioneering approach to heavy music into psalms for the forgotten, threnodies of lost love, and odes to vengeance. Typical to The Body's creative process, Leaving None But Small Birds was composed almost entirely in the studio at Machine With Magnets with engineer/producer Seth Manchester. The Body and Big|Brave aimed to challenge themselves to craft a fully realized and cohesive work that strayed outside the boundaries of the music they make individually. The Body's Lee Buford set up the initial challenge: collaborating to make an album that evoked the country and folk roots of The Band. Big|Brave's Robin Wattie compiled lyrics and melodic lines from across Appalachian, Canadian, and English hymns and folk songs. Select phrases were then reworked and precisely arranged to center the experiences of marginalized characters, victims of hardship, and those yearning for love within each story. The despair and empowerment of these traditional tunes draw remarkable parallels with each group's focus on championing people often cast aside in history. The Body and Big|Brave, following a folk tradition, make each song their own through shifts in perspective and a synthesis of passages from kindred tales. Mysteries of the heart, and those of the great hereafter, have rarely been far from Stake frontman Brent Vanneste's busy, offbeat brain. Never broken by the weight of grief or existential dread, however, he uses those feelings as fuel for a musical fire that's as boldly unconventional as it is bracingly alive. "This band is about all my inner darkness and demons, and finding a peaceful place in my head," he grapples, preferring his songs to do the talking. "I'm not going to be able to erase them, but making music is a great way of arranging them and surviving this crazy life." That process began when he was just 13 years old. Forming Steak Number Eight in honour of his recently deceased brother Tobias Vanbrabant, Brent channelled the most aching personal tragedy into a set of songs that made the whole European rock scene sit up and take notice. A 2018 rebrand as Stake (and accompanying album Critical Method) concluded the "mourning process" by moving away from that unwieldy original name - a song-title from Tobias' band Voidpoint - the last few years have proven that you can never really leave these things behind. If Critical Method showcased the Mastodon-influenced riffy technicality of their sound, the isolation and desolation of Love, Death And Decay leans more towards the Deftones and Tool textural end of the sonic spectrum.

In late October 2019, following a successful UK tour ending in a sold-out concert at the mythical Roundhouse in London, Sunn O))) entered studio 4 of the BBC Maida Vale on invitation to record a live session for Mary Anne Hobbs to be broadcast on Samhain via her excellent radio show on Bbc6.

To enter the legendary John Peel studios was to enter a temple of music and experimentation, liberty in ideas and sound. The band was nearing the end of a long touring year around the Life Metal and Pyroclast albums.

SUNN O))) had developed the compositions extensively, embracing the formative concepts of the Life Metal album conceptually and emotionally, but actualised and evolved into vast, open and bright hypersaturated arrangements. Particularly the pieces the band chose to perform on this recording: Troubled Air and Pyroclasts. The former enriched into a total aspect of the band's ethos and form in many ways, and Pyroclasts had evolved to become all-inclusive radiation of O))).

The radiation embraces collaboration and freedom of interpretation by each player, within a structural format of the massive monuments of sound and distortion which define SUNN O))). Anna Von Hausswolf and her band had accompanied SUNN O))) on the UK leg, and Anna joined

Debut album World Vision Perfect Harmony follows a decade of collaborations starting with The Body and Braveyoung's Nothing Passes. While there are sounds that could be at home on a record by The Body, Manslaughter 777 inhabits much more open spaces. The duo's music is based primarily on drums and eclectic samples, shifting melodic ideas to the overtones and resonances of their respective percussive thuds or clicks. Buford and Jones incorporate hybridizations of live, sampled, and electronic percussion obscuring their boundaries while highlighting their specific tonal and timbral qualities. An alchemical balance of detailed and dynamic production guides each element to the fore in steady waves of relentless momentum. Taken as a whole, World Vision Perfect Harmony is a cornucopia of rhythmic texture. Manslaughter 777 channels a deluge of kineticism into a web of syncopated grooves that are equally entrancing and provocative. Audacious sound architects, Buford and Jones built an album that passionately revels in the world of rhythm. Manslaughter 777's constructs glide as gracefully as they rumble. A long planned reissue project, it's nice to have this one finally happen after only 15 years since we started talking about it! The G-anx / Filthy Christians split 7" was pretty influential to a fledgling Dropdead back in 1991/1992. Two Swedish hardcore/punk bands each approaching fast crazy HC with completely different approaches. We listened to this record a ton, and maybe the influences can't be heard in the DD sound, but it's been there from the start. Formed in recent years in San Francisco (though it may seem more likely that they hatched fresh out of a time travel portal from the mid-’80s Bay Area thrash scene), Hell Fire have the classic look and sound of modern metal’s halcyon days. Their sonic assault warmly condenses elements of Angel Witch, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Exodus, Metallica, Riot, Virtue and Diamond Head into eight tracks of headbanging MUYA anthems.

The free-wheelin’ creativity and infectious vitality of Bay Area thrash is a moment forever locked in time, but its spirit lives on in this band’s galloping guitar picks, soaring harmonies and blistering rhythms. The band’s perfect hybrid of NWOBHM theatrics and American thrash attitude delivers a rousing and genuine expansion on sounds long lost to pointless battles over who can be the most “extreme.”

Hell Fire began when bass player Herman Bandala moved to San Francisco from Tijuana, Mexico, with the hopes of forming a heavy metal band. Herman posted an ad to Craigslist which caught the attention of guitarist Tony Campos. They bonded over a mutual love of ’80s thrash and NWOBHM. Just before they entered the studio to record their debut album Metal Masses, Jake Nunn joined on vocals. The lineup continued to develop over time, finally solidifying with Nunn also taking up second guitar duties and drummer Mike Smith joining prior to recording Free Again.

This sophomore album is being released for the first time on vinyl and remastered for CD and download. It was recorded over five days in Grass Valley, California, at engineer Tim Green’s Louder Studios (The Fucking Champs, Melvins.) Where Metal Masses showcased aesthetic nods to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All album (as well as a cover photo brilliantly depicting a blurry hand speedily playing a Flying-V guitar), Free Again finds the band coming into their own with emphasis upon grooves, a beefier sound and tighter songs that expertly shift into new parts at the drop of a hat.

After the glorious Wormboiler cassette tape compilation obliterated human ears in 2021, American one-man black industrial weapon Uranium finally emerges from the depths of oblivion with its debut full-length album An Exacting Punishment, a five-track, forty-minute radioactive nightmare of complete sonic ruin channelling the darkness of black metal with the scathing immensity of defining post-industrial acts like Brighter Death Now, Godflesh, Wolf Eyes, Swans, MZ. 412, Controlled Bleeding, and Genocide Organ. As the band's name aptly hints at, Uranium was conceived as an aural vessel to explore the outer limits and the most irreversible states of complete human disintegration, and the incineration of its most defining and triumphant achievements; namely society, progress, technology, and civilization, with nuclear power being the conduit and ultimate engine of the greatest and most horrific forms of total annihilation mankind could ever face.
