We each have our own idea of what it means to live through a period filled with perpetual dread, a slowly burning world, and overwhelming darkness. In the case of Portrayal of Guilt, their tortuous afterlife comes with grief, loss, masochism, suffering, and pain. On Christfucker, their second full-length of 2021, Portrayal of Guilt plunges headfirst into unfathomable depths, creating a work of art that's powerfully unsettling. "We think of it partially in the sense of scoring a horror movie," guitarist/vocalist Matt King says. "We wanted to create an atmosphere of anxiety and fear." The entirety of Christfucker is set to unrelenting, nihilistic, howling soundscapes, created by King, drummer James Beveridge, and bassist, Alex Stanfield. Each track tells a story set in the darkest of settings for the listener to interpret and explore. *Beginning with the ominous "The Sixth Circle," which features King shrieking over hypnotic guitar patterns and a thudding rhythm, the band eventually roars to life with a tyrannical blast, delving you further into its oppressive heaviness. On "Bed of Ash," the band plumb new depths while exploring the mechanistic gnashings of industrial drum and bass. On "_where the suffering never ends," churning, gruesome instrumentals provide the backdrop to a tale of brutal demise. Recorded at Strange Weather and Circular Ruin studios in Brooklyn with Ben Greenberg, Christfucker features guest vocals from Jenna Rose of New York darkwave outfit Anatomy (on "Sadist") and Touché Amoré vocalist Jeremy Bolm (on "Fall From Grace"). Using doom — a slow, foreboding style of heavy metal — as a template, Swami Lateplate crafts a set of songs that creeps along powerfully. The themes are simple, generally carried by subdued bass lines and ornamented by the piano like salt on a glacier. What jumps out most is Previte's drumming. Every cymbal vibration and snare snap leaps to the foreground and, with rare exception, decays before the next strike, as much a testament to Previte's assured playing as Saft's engineering. The sound throughout is bright and super present. Each moment is its own event, each note frozen in amber. Regardless of the rock modeling, the disc is likely to satisfy Saft and Previte's audiences; it could appeal to fans of the fringes of metal as well. Originally released in 2021, 'Doom Jazz' is being re-issued by Subsound Records in ultra LTD edition double galaxy LP, LTD edition double white LP, double black LP, CD digipack. It was entirely produced by Bobby Previte and Jamie Saft, recorded and mixed by Jamie Saft at Frank Booth, Brooklyn, NY and mastered by Scott Hull at Scott Hull Mastering, NY. Plumbing the depths of modern death metal with primitive elegance, Succumb have returned with their sophomore release XXI. “In the Flesh” is the brainchild of Egyptian-born, New York-based conceptual artist Nader Sadek. Known for his impressively twisted sculptures, masks, and installations used for example by bands such as Mayhem and Sunn O))), Sadek is now venturing into the realm of recorded music- including songwriting credits on this album!

The band Nader Sadek emerges out of a collaboration between Sadek and some of extreme music’s most talented artists with its core made up out of songwriter/vocalist Steve Tucker (ex-MORBID Angel), Cryptopsy drummer Flo Mounier and Norwegian composer/guitarist Rune Eriksen (ava Inferi, ex-Mayhem). A host of guest-appearances lends additional weight to the musical impact of “In the Flesh” by leading artists such as Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Travis Ryan (cattle Decapitation), Tony Norman (monstrosity), Descructhor (morbid Angel), and Nick McMaster (krallice). “In the Flesh” is firmly based on a technically masterfully executed unique style of Death Metal with a pitch black twist that creates a multi-cultural symphonic abyss where melody and corrosion meet.

As a work conceptual art “In the Flesh” is best explained like this:

Nader Sadek invite you on a journey to the depths of the earth, where substances of a repulsive nature dwell. Beneath the earth’s crust, over millions of years creatures have disintegrated and decayed until taking on ghastly new life as petroleum. Like a return of the undead, petroleum and its derivates have wrought cross-cultural conflict, environmental pollution, and economic distress. With a visual and aural assault, Sadek’s new work “In The Flesh” re-interprets petroleum’s sinister insinuation into our everyday lives. Nine songs and a series of original drawings video works explore several aspects of the commodified resource we find ourselves fatally dependent on.

“In the Flesh” exploits the sonic links between death metal and gasoline-dependent heavy machinery such as automobile and airplane engines. These links shaped the process of musical composition itself: The album opener, “Petrophilia”, kicks in with a sound evoking an engine starting up. Another song, “Of This Flesh (novus deus)”, follows the sonic structure of a car shifting gears. While continuing to link musical composition to mechanical transformations, other songs depart from engine-based references. The outro to the album, “Nigredo in Necromance” which is already accompanied by a video, dwells on an individual’s recognition that he must die in order to reunite with his deceased lover. The song riffs on the life-in-death of an oil-drenched society, as the lovers’ reunite in their decomposition and rebirth as petroleum. This theme also drives the track “Mechanic Idolatry”, which channels the uncanny thrust of Sadek’s recent artistic output, as live human beings provide the fuel for machines transforming themselves into flesh.

Guitarist Bryce VanHoosen joined forces with fellow ex-Spellcaster member Sebastian Silva – who now handles additional guitar duties in Silver Talon and also plays in goth-rockers Unto Others (formerly Idle Hands) – in a shared mission to keep the heavy metal flame burning brightly. Bolstered by the soaring vocal attack of Wyatt Howell (Sanctifyre), Silver Talon began 2018 by unveiling two demo tracks, “Devil Machine” and “Warrior's End,” which showcased the group's ability to create fist-clenching, head-banging heavy metal through a combination of masterful hooks, lush melody and technical dexterity. Silver Talon faced the challenges of 2020 by staying focused and productive. Their efforts culminated in the recording of “Decay and Decadence.”. The first single, “Deceiver, I Am”, was released in December 2020, and showcased the evolution of the group's creative vision and dark power metal sound. An ongoing nightmare without end. It also sums up the state of the world around us as this year has clearly shown.” Alastor is heavy doom rock for the wicked and depraved. The Body and Big|brave are bands possessed of an unequaled ability to convey overwhelming weight with simplicity, repetition, and detailed sonic atmospheres; artists who continue to alter the definition of what it means to be a heavy band. The Body are consistently prolific while increasingly ambitious as untethered producers and collaborators. Big|brave shape sound with dense waves of guitar and feedback, minimalist and hypnotic crashes, and emotionally exacting vocal melodies. In collaboration, The Body and Big|brave shift the gravity of their compositions to woven layers of percussion and unspooling guitars that sprawl through stark frameworks of earthy folk. Their debut collaborative album Leaving None But Small Birds distills the two ensembles’ pioneering approach to heavy music into psalms for the forgotten, threnodies of lost love, and odes to vengeance.

Typical to The Body’s creative process, Leaving None But Small Birds was composed almost entirely in the studio at Machine With Magnets with engineer/producer Seth Manchester. The Body and Big|brave aimed to challenge themselves to craft a fully realized and cohesive work that strayed outside the boundaries of the music they make individually. The Body’s Lee Buford set up the initial challenge: collaborating to make an album that evoked the country and folk roots of The Band. Big|brave’s Robin Wattie compiled lyrics and melodic lines from across Appalachian, Canadian, and English hymns and folk songs. Select phrases were then reworked and precisely arranged to center the experiences of marginalized characters, victims of hardship, and those yearning for love within each story. The despair and empowerment of these traditional tunes draw remarkable parallels with each group’s focus on championing people often cast aside in history. Leaving None But Small Birds takes its name from the “Polly Gosford” lyric “He covered her grave / and hastened home / Leaving none but small birds / her fate to bemoan,” an image in traditional songs evoking the alienation and isolation of the persecuted. The Body and Big|brave, following a folk tradition, make each song their own through shifts in perspective and a synthesis of passages from kindred tales.

Leaving None But Small Birds transfigures The Body and Big|brave’s heft into a daring diversity of sounds unbridled and austere. The loping opener “Blackest Crow” implements gusts of violin and harmony against the bedrock of a droning riff and shruti box that subtly shifts timbre. “Hard Times” threads stories of indentured and child factory laborers through cascading trellises of rubato guitar as Wattie’s petitions are swallowed by the swell. The Body and Big|brave’s maximalist rumble looms at the fringes of each song as guitarist Chip King’s (The Body) staggering drones seep into their fabric with resolute percussion from Buford and Big|brave drummer Tasy Hudson punctuating with their steady current. Wattie and fellow Big|brave guitarist Mathieu Ball twirl repeating phrases around one another into restrained meditations that bend and shift incrementally. Hudson joins Wattie in harmonized duets and hockets across the album, enhancing the loneliness of “Once I Had A Sweetheart” and laying bare the raw brilliance of “Black is the Colour.” “Polly Gosford” froths with persistently rising walls of violin, guitar, piano and trudging toms that only capitulate after Wattie spins the tragic song of femicide into ghostly revenge with “She broke him, she tore him / she ripped him in three / because he murdered / her baby and she.”

Big|brave’s roots as a minimalist folk band and The Body’s love of old-time, country blues, and folk music enable the quintet to strike a formidable balance between sorrowful lamentation and uplifting resolve to weighty effect. Leaving None But Small Birds thatches together two monumental innovative forces that render the emotionally profound with lucid, devastating vitality.

Trump being elected president—though Jourgensen says this new album is more informational and reflective in tone. “With AmeriKKKant I was in shock that Trump won. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. Because I believe if you are a musician or an artist you should be expressing what’s going on around you through your art. It’s going to happen whether you do it consciously or unconsciously. Moral Hygiene however has progressed even further into a cautionary tale of what will happen if we don’t act. There’s less rage, but there’s more reflection and I bring in some guests to help cement that narrative.

With the release of Moral Hygiene, Jourgensen is more positive than before. “This may sound crazy but I’m more hopeful about 2021 than I have been in two decades at least,” he says. “Because I do see things changing; people are starting to see through all the bullshit and want to get back to actual decorum in society. We could just treat each other nicely and be treated nicely in return. I never thought Ministry would be in the position of preaching traditional values, but this is the rebellion now.

KK’s Priest, the band comprised of renowned former Judas Priest guitarist, KK Downing and former vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens, is pleased to announce the release of the debut album Sermons OF THE Sinner via Explorer1 Music Group/EX1 Records on August 20.

Sermons OF THE Sinner is an incredible collection of future metal classics, sure to be one of the stand-out metal releases of 2021. K.K Downing’s genre-defining guitar style helped establish Judas Priest‘s iconic sound and helped propelled them to one of the top Heavy Metal bands of all-time, earning numerous accolades including a Grammy® in 2010 for “Best Metal Performance,” a total of five Grammy® nominations and multi-platinum and gold releases.

With Downing on guitar, KK’s Priest also features ex-Judas Priest member Tim “Ripper” Owens on vocals, who fronted the band for eight years and recorded two studio albums, Jugulator, featuring the Grammy® nominated track “Bullet Train,” and Demolition, plus two live albums. They are joined by Tony Newton (Voodoo Six) on bass, A.J. Mills (Hostile) on guitar and Sean Elg (DeathRiders/Cage) on drums. Original drummer, Les Binks, unfortunately sustained a wrist injury, but will make special guest live appearances when the band tours.

New York City has the historical significance for being the world's melting pot and churning out an amalgamation of cultural diversity. The evolution of New York Hardcore epitomizes the primordial ooze that is generated from mixing of multi styles of heavy music. As the early days of New York Hardcore transitioned from the 80's into the '90's, it's hard to deny the growing influence of metal on the classic hardcore sounds. With bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of it All, Leeway melding their hardcore and punk roots with brash metal riffs, driving drums and signature breakdowns, a new genre of "cross-over" born. The music was hard, fast and melodic. It truly was an amazing period in hardcore music history. New York's Merauder was no exception. Forming in 1990, their cross-over style quickly propelled them to the forefront of the Nyhc scene and beyond. Merauder's musical style was well ahead of their time. The lyrics were deep and insightful. The musicianship was hailed as the next level of hardcore as they weaved in elements of metal with the "in-your-face" New York attitude. For the first time ever, the early Merauder recordings have been compiled into one release, immortalized on tangible formats, confirming the internet folklore about the existence of these recordings. Vocalist, Marco "Minus" Rodriguez became known for his commanding vocal style and scene presence. Add in original members, Javier "sob" Carpio, "Karate" Chris Bozeth, Eamon Carney and Vinny Vitale, Merauder quickly dominated the early 1990's music scene and beyond. Merauder "The Minus Years" is a capture of New York hardcore nostalgia. For those that were there, these recordings will certainly refresh memories that have been tucked way in the memory bank for many years. For those that are relatively new to the hardcore culture, The Minus Years is a time-machine into where so many new hardcore and metal bands have been influenced by. The recordings are raw and analog. The energy that was captured is not masked by overdubs and over-production. Simply, five dudes in a room and when the "red" record button was enabled, history was made.
