Here’s just a few of the gems on Brown Acid - The Fourteenth Trip, the much beloved series that is the Nuggets of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock: The Legends’ “Fever Games” is a 1969 fever dream of heavy psych on par with Blue Cheer at their heaviest, featuring an incredible intro with whammy-bar gymnastics through an Echoplex. This Harrisburg, PA power trio, featuring Dan Hartman (Edgar Winter Group, et al) and his brother Dave, also name-checks Jimi Hendrix Experience in the midst of the song’s most blatant Hendrix rip. Perhaps that’s how Fever Games work? Transfer’s velvet smooth groove has an almost proto-punk feel like a mashup of the Velvet Underground and The Flamin’ Groovies. But the lyrics referencing tokin’ reefer and the twanging surf lead situate them closer to their heavy rock brethren. This very rare 1974 self- released 45 is this lone archive of the band’s existence—assume they just kept right on playin’ it cool into oblivion. Cox’s Army deploy the grungy rocker “I’m Tired” which sounds like if Jimi Hendrix fronted Mudhoney. Yes, please! Though they hailed from Aurora, IL, it sounds like there’s definitely some Pacific Northwest in their blood. Particularly in the gritty production, which hints at The Sonics’ “bustin’ outta lo-fi” style. Not much is known about the enigmatic Columbus, OH musician known as Raven, whose “Back to Ohio Blues” closes this edition. The mantra-like droning riff of this eight-minute jam is a Black To Comm-style epic, driven by Raven’s hostile, no-bullshit diatribe until it all busts open for an insane two-minute long drum solo soaked in odd effects that sounds like it was copped from a Melvins album.

After the glorious Wormboiler cassette tape compilation obliterated human ears in 2021, American one-man black industrial weapon Uranium finally emerges from the depths of oblivion with its debut full-length album An Exacting Punishment, a five-track, forty-minute radioactive nightmare of complete sonic ruin channelling the darkness of black metal with the scathing immensity of defining post-industrial acts like Brighter Death Now, Godflesh, Wolf Eyes, Swans, MZ. 412, Controlled Bleeding, and Genocide Organ. As the band's name aptly hints at, Uranium was conceived as an aural vessel to explore the outer limits and the most irreversible states of complete human disintegration, and the incineration of its most defining and triumphant achievements; namely society, progress, technology, and civilization, with nuclear power being the conduit and ultimate engine of the greatest and most horrific forms of total annihilation mankind could ever face. Auditory terror both permeates and defines Uranium's music, with bludgeoning and majestic post-industrial soundscapes pulsing inside a lightless void lit only by drifting embers and falling ash, while immense infernal atmospherics wrap their deathly spires around the listener, crushing them into a distorted auditory abyss. Power electronics, industrial noise and black metal have rarely before been seen chained together and weaponized into such a mortal design. What’s more, their usage of synths is sparing and tasteful, and on Schwarzwald did they set forth a sterling standard of production: remarkably clear and crisp, but not once sacrificing an iota of power.

Their blessedly sick new album, It's Time... To Rise from the Grave, shows the reconfigured quintet_Kyle Beam (guitars), Alexander Jones (vocals), Tommy Wall (bass),Jared Welch (guitars) and Matt Browning (drums)_have retained their mind-infecting sonic savagery but weren't satisfied in their pursuit to improve it through wicked (yet studied) reformulation. Certainly, Undeath's 2021 Decibel flexi, Diemented Dissection, paved the way, but it's tracks like "Fiend for Corpses," "Rise from the Grave," and "The Funeral Within" that display Undeath's terrifyingly insane trajectory.Undeath traveled to Philadelphia to record It's Time... To Rise from the Grave with Scoops Dardaris at Headroom Studios in March-April 2021. The group spent two weeks tracking_a song a day almost. Dardaris rough-mixed on the fly during the recording sessions, and then required two more weeks after to finalize the mix. Not ones to sacrifice a working team, they brought on Arthur Rizk (CreepingDeath, Enforced) to master. The sonic goal was to get a frenetic, nearly off-the-rails production, but with a discernible, if slightly lived-in line through it.Think: Cannibal Corpse's Vile (Scott Burns) mixed with Carcass' Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious (Colin Richardson).It's Time... To Rise from the Grave isn't just an early contender for death metal album of 2022_it's destined to be a modern-day classic.

A Tzompantli, in bygone days, was a rack used to display human skulls, often of enemies or sacrifices, in several Mesoamerican civilizations. In 2022, Tzompantli is a beyond crushing Death Doom war march built on a bedrock of Native / Indigenous themes, rituals and history, illuminating the splendor, brutality and despair within.

Nearly three years after the band’s self-released EP, Tzompantli’s debut full length presents the first smoke-conjured specter to manifest materially. ‘Tlazcaltiliztli’, a ritual ceremony that translates to; ‘nourishing the fire and sun with blood’, is imbued with the spirit of Native inspiration that dwells deep within the heart and soul of the project and is skillfully weaved into a traditional bludgeoning framework of spine-severing savagery and melancholic anguish. On the ritualistic ‘Eltequi’ (to cut the chest open and extract the heart as an offering) the band’s unification of native / folk instrumentation and heaviness becomes one in the same, opening vast new horizons for where this sound can go.

‘Tlazcaltiliztli’ is dedicated, and an offering, to the indigenous peoples, nations & tribes of the North, South, East & West of the American continents. It marks a fearsome and spirited new vision for the Death Metal underground.
