Two years after their sophomore "Cosmic Terror", Germany's THE Spirit once again delve into the vast nothingness of the universe, while capturing the fear of the unknown and humanity’s insignificance within our cosmos in their sound. On their upcoming third offering, "Of Clarity and Galactic Structures", the duo, consisting of Matthias Trautes (vocals, guitars, bass) and Manuel Steitz (drums), hold on to their black/death metal roots yet take the progressive elements to a whole new level. Whilst the predecessor from 2019 already contained some prog elements, the brain twisting rhythm changes and virtuosic instrumental performance became an essential part of the band's universe. Once again recorded and mixed at the Woodshed Studio, Germany by V. Santura (with the drums being tracked at Iguana Studios by Christoph Brandes), THE Spirit’s lyrics usually mix a general misanthropic view on the world with cosmic metaphors and the call to see our often narrow-minded and egocentric existence in the larger context of our whole universe, where none of our daily struggles and vanities ever matter. To distance oneself from this attitude and see the bigger picture can often lead to new clarity, and this thought inspired the album title.

Fans of Classic Heavy Metal and Doom Metal wait with abated breath for the anticipated debut full album, “Last Days of Babylon”, from Swedish metal saviours THE Sonic Overlords. Founded in 2017 by guitarist Morgan Zocek, who played in an Ozzy tribute band and opted to begin writing original music with the same classic darkness, melody, and power of classic late ‘70/early ‘80s heavy metal but with a more modern approach to the production and sonics. The full sound of THE Sonic Overlords began to solidify as members came in that shared the same vision and enthusiasm, including drummer Per Solang, vocalist Marcus Zachrisson Rubin and bassist Daniel Ramírez. The group's blend of melodic rock majesty and thunderous doom was first revealed with the release of their debut single, “In My Darkest Room,” in October 2020. That song gained rock radio airplay throughout Scandinavia and subsequently spread throughout mainland Europe, the U.S. and Australia as DJs and programmers were drawn to the group's combination of powerful dark riffs and the epic melodicism with influences from the likes of Dio/Martin-era Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, early Candlemass, Yngwie J. Malmsteen/Rising Force, Scorpions and MSG. The band's blend of power, darkness and musicality was recognized by former Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin via a shout-out on his social media channels that led to a friendship and Martin even offering to sing one of the band’s songs, which appears as a bonus track on the CD version.

After 10 years, atmospheric triprock band The Gathering will release a new album! ‘Beautiful Distortion’ is a typical eclectic The Gathering album, although it may be their ‘most dynamic and melodic’ album to date. The Gathering’s signature electronic rock sound is topped with warm Nordic vocals and beautiful vocal lines by vocalist Silje Wergeland. Producer Attie Bauw, who also produced The Gathering’s ‘Home’ and ‘How to Measure a Planet?’, collaborated with them on their 11th full length studio album. The band started writing and rehearsing for this album already several years ago. Over the last year and a half they could not make music together or travel due to Covid-19. There was a lot of online contact between Norway (Silje) and the Netherlands (rest). Which was a challenge, but turned out well. Although it took a bit longer than expected. The band recorded in studio Arnold Muhren in Volendam (Netherlands) and all vocals were recorded in Bergen Lydstudio (Norway). All band members contributed a lot to the creative process, both individually and together, whenever possible. That resulted in a lot of diversity in the songs. And in the end, all the songs came together beautifully. Producer Attie Bauw managed to help create a diverse yet coherent and warm album.

Charlatans took its beginning back in 2019 when Mattias Svensson gave Jens Broman a call. Jens Broman hadn't been working with music to any major extent since 2010 when he left Darkane. Since the release of the album, Anomaly, back in 2006, The Defaced had slowly started to dissolve during 2007-2008 and was finally set on pause indefinitely in late 2008. Mattias explained on the phone that he had written a bunch of songs that he wanted Jens to listen to. The intention was to start up The Defaced again. Jens loved the songs immediately and slowly during 2019 Mattias and Jens started to set up a work process for continuing working on the songs. – It all came very naturally, just like in the old days, says Jens. Klas Ideberg shared the same thoughts and ambitions and after recruiting new drummer Bob Ruben a new start of the band was on the table. All instruments were recorded in Helsingborg at the Mansarda studios, produced by Klas and Mattias. Vocals were recorded and produced by Jens and Björn Strid at Studio Björngrottan, in Tyreså Autumn 2020. Mixing and mastering by Lawrence Mackory, At Obey Mastering, in Uppsala. December 2020. As with so many artists much of the inspiration for this record, lyrically came from a large extent from the pandemic. Not as such but its creativity came as an involuntary pause from the wound-up stressed world. The songs cover themes such as struggles with relationships, self-doubt and eager frustration and a feeling that everything is already too late to change. Charlatans is an album that encompasses the sound of the earlier albums but given the addition of a more prominent progressive touch. The songs aim to give the listener an even greater sonic adventure than the previous records. Still, most of the heritage from old metal giants is ever so present, blended together with classic songwriting with a twist towards progressive soundscapes.

This no-fucks-given culture has no doubt shaped DeVine and his attitude towards music that is also evident in The Cruel Intentions’ music In technical terms, the band plays around the esthetics of bands such as Guns ‘N Roses and Mötley Crue, and carries on the legacy of good old Rock ‘n’Roll into the contemporary youth of today. The Catatonics were Syracuse and Central New York’s first hardcore punk band. A little maturation goes a long way. Youthful energy is key to aggressive music, but it takes experience and talent to channel that energy productively. In the case of The Catalyst, they've tightened the reins on the droopy tantrums of their previous EP's. Now their music seethes, with biting lyrics to match. Eric Smith still vomits vocals like an aural exorcism, but his "singing" is stronger and more prominent in the mix. He takes aim at the rogues behind the economic meltdown ("Corner office with a view / Picture window from which you might leap to join us in the streets"), as well as Internet backbiting ("You never cite your sources when your passion is poison"). Musically, The Catalyst continue to crank out throbbing, screamy, squealing songs. They sound like the swampy middle ground between Karp and Pg. 99. Yet their members have grown into a tightly knit unit. Though sloppiness is de rigueur among bands that have rediscovered vintage Sub Pop and AmRep records, The Catalyst boast real chops and an idiosyncratic take on the form. On Swallow Your Teeth (Perpetual Motion Machine, 2009), The Catalyst control their chaos just enough to create their most cohesive work yet. Besides, can you go wrong with a song titled "Lars Ulrich's 1986 Funeral (It Should Have Been You)"?

Mix that, with the heavily symphonic sound, fitting sound effects and you've got yourself a nice recipe for one of the best symphonic black metal album in time.

Based out of Iowa, Telekinetic Yeti is a two-man band that delivers sonic brutality melded with psychedelic doom wizardry, forged by the worship of the almighty riff and honed by relentless touring and dedication to their craft. Creating music as cryptically enchanting as it is heavy, you wouldn’t guess that the impressive cacophony pouring out of the speakers like molten, metal syrup is being produced by only two people. Founder and guitarist Alex Baumann explains, “Originally I decided not to have a bass player purely for logistical reasons, it was just another schedule to work around, another person who’s boss could tell us we can’t tour, but then I started seeing it as a challenge, like let’s see how heavy we can make it with just two people.” That started grabbing peoples’ attention. In late October 2019, following a successful UK tour ending in a sold-out concert at the mythical Roundhouse in London, Sunn O))) entered studio 4 of the BBC Maida Vale on invitation to record a live session for Mary Anne Hobbs to be broadcast on Samhain via her excellent radio show on Bbc6.

To enter the legendary John Peel studios was to enter a temple of music and experimentation, liberty in ideas and sound. The band was nearing the end of a long touring year around the Life Metal and Pyroclast albums.

SUNN O))) had developed the compositions extensively, embracing the formative concepts of the Life Metal album conceptually and emotionally, but actualised and evolved into vast, open and bright hypersaturated arrangements. Particularly the pieces the band chose to perform on this recording: Troubled Air and Pyroclasts. The former enriched into a total aspect of the band's ethos and form in many ways, and Pyroclasts had evolved to become all-inclusive radiation of O))).

Mysteries of the heart, and those of the great hereafter, have rarely been far from Stake frontman Brent Vanneste's busy, offbeat brain. Never broken by the weight of grief or existential dread, however, he uses those feelings as fuel for a musical fire that's as boldly unconventional as it is bracingly alive. "This band is about all my inner darkness and demons, and finding a peaceful place in my head," he grapples, preferring his songs to do the talking. "I'm not going to be able to erase them, but making music is a great way of arranging them and surviving this crazy life." That process began when he was just 13 years old. Forming Steak Number Eight in honour of his recently deceased brother Tobias Vanbrabant, Brent channelled the most aching personal tragedy into a set of songs that made the whole European rock scene sit up and take notice. A 2018 rebrand as Stake (and accompanying album Critical Method) concluded the "mourning process" by moving away from that unwieldy original name - a song-title from Tobias' band Voidpoint - the last few years have proven that you can never really leave these things behind. The new album Love, Death And Decay is testament to that. If Critical Method showcased the Mastodon-influenced riffy technicality of their sound, the isolation and desolation of Love, Death And Decay leans more towards the Deftones and Tool textural end of the sonic spectrum.

New studio album of the most legendary traditional heavy metal band of Greece! Formed in 1984, Spitfire is the most legendary heavy metal band of Greece. The debut album "First Attack" (released by EMI in 1987) stands at the top of the greatest metal albums coming from the country and has built a strong following over the decades worldwide. At the same time, the band suffered a major blow when original singer Dinos Costakis was seriously injured in a car accident. Spitfire had everything going for them until that day and the tragic accident that forced Dinos to retire from the stage. Finnish Heavy Metal legends, Spiritus Mortis unveil a grand–scale epic of antique Doom on 16th of September via Svart Records.

Erecting a new monolith in the halls of Doom Metal history with their fifth album The Great Seal, Spiritus Mortis certify true classic status as one of the scene’s modern greats.

There are few modern-day bands that can be uttered under the same breath as the giants of Traditional Doom and Heavy Metal like Spiritus Mortis. Formed in 1987 as Rigor Mortis they can firmly attest to having been “the first Finnish Doom Metal band”, uncovering hallowed ground before the later imitators. Carrying the banner of powerful true Metal, the likes of which stands proudly next to the masters such as Dio era Sabbath, Solitude Aeturnus and Trouble, Spiritus Mortis have established a tradition of catchy song-writing and consummate knowledge of sacred riff-craft. The Great Seal is a collosal album which Spiritus Mortis describes as “a rite of collective suicide and an orgy of self-immolation” and plumbs the depths of epic sorrow with gargantuan slabs of igneous riffs and emotional vocals.

Synonymous with classic Finnish Doom bands like Reverend Bizarre, whose singer Albert Witchfinder intoned previous albums’ vocals, Spiritus Mortis continue to define and cement their formidable legacy. Albert’s replacement, Kimmo Perämäki is more than worthy of the consecrated robes he inherits, delivering a performance which is flawlessly dominating and instantly gratifying. Tracks like Martyrdom Operation and Visions Of Immortality see Perämäki boldly carving his own name in the stone tablets of future history, marrying the riffs of the Maijala brothers and guitarist Kari Lavila with the splendor of magnificent melancholy that Spiritus Mortis is so known and admired for.
