After two long sold out albums, Romperayo (Discrepant, 2015) and Que Jué? (Souk, 2019), Pedro Ojeda’s unique update on classic Colombian music returns for a full long player of future tropical instrumental tunes, heavy on the drum grooves mixed with slow, languid experimental interludes.

This is 21st century Colombian popular music taken to the next level by one of the most singular figures currently active on the Colombian scene. Romperayo’s, aka Pedro Ojeda (Los Pirañas, Chupame el Dedo) solo project uses his irreverent drumming techniques and filters them through a lens of new school psychedelia, historical sampling and acid synth solos.

With his sound obsessions clearly present over all of his work (and this record), Pedro effortless mixes the old school with the new with an avant-garde collage approach to composition, never forgetting his academic studies on Latin American drumming styles. The result expands the frontiers of Colombian tropical music and provides a new, multicultural dialogue whilst using many of the rhythms and melodies of the Colombian historical repertoire to a new generation. Irresistible Brazilian blues reggae from the heart of the Amazon rainforest. A psychedelic guarana induced trip and ode to the fading indigenous cultures and shifting hegemony in Brazil. This one-off release by Manaus native Natacha Fink was originally written in 1986 as the lead track on Nossa Musica - a compilation celebrating regional music from the Amazon. Emerging out of the dictatorship, Natacha and her fellow artists rejected the aesthetic standards driven by internal colonialism and sought out new ways to express themselves away from the styles of the dominant Rio-São Paulo axis. What surfaced was a melodic blend of genres, with Natacha’s haunting vocals and playful lyrics gliding over an arrangement of guitars and double bass. Vocal backing is led by Torrinho, well known for his layered composition style, whose song ‘Porto de Lenha’ is recognised throughout Amazonas as an unofficial anthem. Hidden within the Amazon, Pirarublue lies in that wonderful space between innocence and honesty. Proudly exploring cultural and ecological spaces through a refreshing, ghostly infectious groove. Accompanying Natacha’s beguiling single is the field recording “Unseen Songlines” by artist and academic Nimalan Yoganathan. The composition immerses the listener in the soundscapes of Mamori Lake, a remote village inside the Brazilian Amazon. Nimalan explores the ambiguous perception of sounds emanating from the dense rainforest and deep beneath the Amazon River, where we hear the sounds but cannot see their sources: an acousmatic concert performed by the rainforest itself. Processed field recordings of birds and frogs, as well as underwater hydrophone recordings of dolphins and fish subtly weave throughout electroacoustic textures and beats. The listener is invited to hone in on the musical subtleties hidden throughout the environment. The compositional methods employed in this piece draw on the concepts of sonic rupture, presence, absence and memory found in the dub music tradition.

This limited edition 7” by Sticky Buttons puts these two outlying works together for a unique listening experience, combining the human and more-than-human experience of life at the heart of Brazil. Both uniquely Amazonian but with a universal appeal.

After capturing the attention of audiences, DJs worldwide and the media with the brilliant "Flight Of Sagittarius", Brazilian Diogo Strausz, signed to Parisian label Goutte d'Or Records, presents : Samba From Outer Space This second opus takes us on a journey through time and style, from jazz-funk to dance music and Afrobeat, invoking masters such as Caetano Veloso, Giorgio Moroder or Tony Allen. "This idea of "Samba From Outer Space" comes from dance music being a universal language beyond electronic but mainly a form of gathering people together in the same frequency." says Diogo. We could summarize everything in "Electronic dance music is nothing but samba from outer space."

The joyful and melancholy songs of the soul that have been sung on Tumaco, a small island in the Pacific Gulf of Colombia that has been exposed to violence, abandoned, and isolated, are now echoing across the world's dance floors. The world's first recording of Alba Maria Valencia and her group Cantoras DE Yerbabuena, the bearers of a little-known local tradition, who were born and raised on the small island of Tumaco, also known as "the pearl of the Pacific," and have been singing the songs they learned from their parents for over 65 years! The artwork for the sleeve is by Yukie Monnai. The semicircular arch in the background, which was a symbol of Tumaco, collapsed earlier this year and is no longer there. Alba Maria Valencia and the members of Cantoras de Yerba Buena are very happy to have this arch painted on the sleeve.

Another door opens to new possibilities for Cumbia! From the cyberspace connecting the Bay Area, London, Monterrey, and Tokyo comes Lovers Cumbia, a mellow, sweet, and heartbreaking music. The latest release from Grupo Jejeje, the unique cyber-cumbia sonidera project of Turbo Sonidero, a Chicano born in San Jose, California, and Arrabalero, a Persian immigrant living in London, is a lovers' cumbia featuring the sweet and sensual voice of Simone Michelle, a singer who is gaining attention in the Bay Area! The cover is a reversible sleeve by the genius Ryohei Kazumi of Entertainment. When placed side by side with Grupo Jejeje's previous work, "Kumbia De La Rober / Quetzalli" (okra310), a single composition appears. Two postcards with portraits and lyrics by Simone Michelle are enclosed.

Exotica, ye-yé cumbia, guaracha infused twist, rock'n roll mambo, Spanish rumba, boogaloo beat, tropical garage and other unexpected bastard genres are featured in this festive compilation of bizarre hits taken from the glorious catalog of records released during the 60s and 70s on the Peruvian label Discos MAG. Some clearly unite genres, others are projects with creative names, but all are bold musical initiatives that got and will always get people onto the dance floor. "Sabroso Go Go" brings together fourteen musical mixes created in the recording studios of Manuel Antonio Guerrero (MAG), in which music directors combine rhythm with alchemy in a quest to find the philosopher's stone of the dance. Exotica, ye-yé cumbia, guaracha infused twist, rock'n roll mambo, Spanish rumba, boogaloo beat, tropical garage and other unexpected bastard genres are featured in this festive compilation. Although this compilation begins in 1957, experiments like this (some more memorable than others) were not new in Peru. The songs on this album were however much more successful hybrids. Some clearly unite genres, others are projects with creative names, but all are bold musical initiatives that got and will always get people onto the dance.

Some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. On Soundway’s latest release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s Brazil - the tracks are picked by Millos Kaiser, one half of the Brazilian duo Selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. It’s a rare compilation that offers Brazilian music actually picked by a Brazilian.
Whilst names such as Ricardo Bomba, Villa Box, Fogo Baiano, Electric Boogies and Batista Junior may not be household names, they tell an untold, yet rich and important part of musical history in Brazil. The release also covers a decade that has been intentionally forgotten and brushed aside by many in the country.
Onda De Amor is a release that is loaded with smooth grooves, bubbling bass, glistening synthesisers, funk strutting guitar lines and sheen of production that undeniably marks it of its time. For Kaiser this compilation is about reintroducing music during a period of reappraisal, catching a new wave and hoping contemporary listeners will ride it with him. “The idea is to do justice to these songs. Songs that combine all the right ingredients that should have put them on radio playlists when I was growing up or at least in the cases of more adventurous DJs”.
Millos Kaiser is a DJ, digger, vinyl junkie/dealer born in Rio de Janeiro and living in São Paulo for the past 8 years. He launched the dance party/club night Selvagem with partner Trepanado in 2010, bringing thousands of dancers one Sunday a month to a public square in the heart of São Paulo.

CaSSETTE Con-los, which boasts deep-rooted popularity among various fans for its genre-less and borderless musicality and euphoric live shows, has completed its long-awaited full-length album, their first in about 13 years. This album is a precursor single that serves as a greeting to the fans. The release includes two songs, "Eiga Demo Miyou" (Let's watch a movie), a Japanese calypso with a catchy melody and superb vocals, and "4 Mills Brothers," a serious and mellow song that will not be included on the album, but is familiar to the live audience and is a perfect greeting.

This final volume presents tracks from both decades with a great selection of hot sounds ranging from pure unaltered wild Rock'n[Roll to Psychedelia, Latin sounds, visceral Hard Rock, Soul or Funk. When in 1960 Elza da Conceição Soares released her debut LP she had already gathered a great experience as a stage artist, having toured Argentina with Mercedes Batista. The big success of her Se acaso você chegasse single was a firm statement of the undeniable quality and unique style of Elza Soares, who brought the scat style of Louis Armstrong to samba. The jazz influence anticipated the phenomenon of bossa-nova, which in the style of Soares was marketed as "a bossa-negra" and is present through the sources of this, her debut LP.

Elza Soares would of course become a widely known international star touring Europe and the U.S. and spreading her career over the last 60 years, scoring numerous chart hits and collecting prestigious awards and having been chosen as "Best Singer Of The Millenium" by the BBC back in 2000.
