JICO’s history dates back to 1873, when an ancestor of the Nakagawa family established a sewing needle factory for kimonos. In 1877, Thomas Edison developed the first phonograph in the U.S., and shortly after the turn of the century, phonograph production started in Japan. Combining the technology for manufacturing sewing needles with the production of phonograph needles, JICO began manufacturing steel needles for gramophones in 1949. After the gramophone was replaced by stereo record players in 1966, JICO began manufacturing needles for phonographs. Since 1964, JICO has been producing diamond-tipped needles of modern design.

In total, JICO’s range includes about 2,200 different types of record needles, which are assembled by experienced craftsmen who have been working for the company for decades. In the audiophile scene, JICO has earned an excellent reputation with its Super Analog Stylus needle, which is known for its outstanding fidelity and quality.

With the launch of the Custom Shop product line in April 2021, JICO produced an MM cartridge to replace the legendary SHURE M44 series, which was discontinued in the summer of 2018. The J44 marked the birth of the JICO Custom Shop brand, under whose banner new products are being developed for the future of analog vinyl record experience.
