Peridot' dives right in, and so I will. It’s a gemstone, peridot, and may become your favorite gemstone (as it has mine since I’ve dug in to its history and cultural significance). I like volcanoes and volcanic land formations. 'Peridot,' the musical piece presented here by Powers/rolin, is soundtrack to memories of in-person witnessed lava floes and the infinite parade of Herzogian docu-footage of rivers of fire and constructive destruction. There are edits or augmentations evident, creating (or revealing) form, in the tradition of Teo Macero’s work on In A Silent Way. Because rarely does the beauty of a musical moment survive the translation from performance to recording without losing that crucial thing that made it a once-in-a-lifetime happening without judicious and usually minimal manipulation. We overdub, we mix, we edit. We master, we distribute. If you’ve ever been out in the woods with some friends and come upon a little place in a creek that’s just big enough to get in for something resembling a ‘swim’ but is more like a ‘dip’, and no-one has brought costumes designed explicitly for swimming so some begin to disrobe completely, and then you do too even though you feel awkward and never really wanted to be naked around these people (or, really, almost anyone) but do it anyway, and the embarrassment never really goes away during the whole time you luxuriate in the cold water but almost does again and again as something in you realizes that this is the best and greatest juxtaposition of flesh with moving water that could ever have happened, if this has occurred to you in your life then now you have musical accompaniment for the sorting-through of that memory. In recent years, again and again, Powers/Rolin does it right & natural, and somehow I always think of sunlight and ’sunlight’ simultaneously when I listen to their recorded work. The highly hailed pianist Herbie Hancock commented, “I'm honored to be part of this meaningful project that supports the important work of the Jazz Foundation, who has always been there for musicians going through tough times. They have been an especially critical resource for the community during the pandemic, helping those in need of medical care, putting food on the table and paying their rent.”

While the album supports musicians across the industry, it also commemorates the artists whose lives were lost to the pandemic and throughout the year, including Wallace Roney and Jimmy Heath. After many years working as a buyer for several record stores, DJ Chintam opened his own Blow Up shop in 2018 in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. A member of the Dayjam Crew and a specialist of soul, funk, rare groove and disco music, Chintam is also an expert of the home-brewed Wamono grooves. ‘Masses is an utterly unexpected, and utterly gripping, collaboration between the East London duo, Spring Heel Jack, and a group of top-flight improvisers, drawn largely from New York’s ascendant free jazz network but also including Evan Parker and microtonal violinist Matt Maneri.

‘If there are precedents for this particular mix, in which studio-processed audio environments are played back in real time as the triggers for, and fixed components in, a series of group improvisations, they feel few and far between. George Rusell’s 1967 Electronic Sonata For Souls Loved By Nature, Bob Ostertag’s Say No More Project, and some of Evan Parker’s explorations in the realm of synergetic electroacoustics provide three possible and very different models. But as Matthew Shipp points out, Masses ‘creates its own space and time’.

Pascal Gaigne, born in France in 1958 and installed in San Sebastian since 1985, is a musician with a vast trajectory composing music for films. He has composed for more than 50 movies, won 16 awards (including a Goya award, Spanish Oscar equivalent) and had 15 nominations. He has worked with some of the most interesting new directors in Spanish cinema (Víctor Erice, Icíar Bolláin, Salvador García Ruíz, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, Montxo Armendáriz), and foreign directors like France (Le cou de la girafe), Finland (Matka Edeniin) or Cuba (Omerta).

Early in his career, before working in cinema, he collaborated with some of the most interesting artists and voices in the short history of Basque folk music, including well known Amaia Zubiria (check the two records he made with her “Egun Argi Hartan” & “Kolorez eta Ametsez”), as well as Basque traditional chant avant-gardist Beñat Achiary. It is together with Amaia & Beñat that he paired himself up to create “music pour le ballet du Iguzki Hauskara”, an entire album of compositions made for the 80’s French Basque Ballet group “Ekarle”. Originally released on cassette only in 1984, it is now reissued by Hegoa including three unreleased pieces taken from a second album that was never published.

It is easy to see why he rapidly became involved in free jazz. Once he was settled in New York, he appeared on Sunny Murray Quintet, recorded under the leadership of the drum crazy colleague of Albert Ayler.

In 1968, the saxophonist and flutist recorded his first album under his own name: It’s Not Up To Us. The following year he came to Paris in the wake of... Sunny Murray. He would come back to France in 1971 (again with Murray) and in 1973 (without Murray for a change). This is when he met Jef Gilson, the pianist and producer who encouraged him to record under his own name again.

On Palm Records (Gilson’s label), he would release four albums: Us, Mother Africa, Exactement and Funny Funky Rib Crib.

“Funny Funky Rib Crib” is an unforgettable recording (made up of several sessions dating from the middle of 1974) of creative jazz overwhelmed by funk and soul.

If Lancaster had already made successful albums in the same genre – notably New Horizons, under the name Sounds Of Liberation which he co-led with Khan Jamal –, this one is an homage to James Brown and Sammy Davis enjoying the company of a host of guests including François Tusques (electric piano), Clint Jackson III (trumpet), François Nyombo (guitar), Joseph Traindl (trombone)...

Funny Funky Rib Crib’s cover is a three-quarter profile portrait of the saxophonist (who can also be heard on flute, piano and even vocals), however, on the record, it is the whole group, inspired and frenetic, that tests the melodies of “Just Test”, “Dogtown” or “Rib Crib” – the two versions of which display leader Lancaster’s art of nuance. Byard Lancaster wanted to be precise, moving regularly from one instrument to another: first on piano, which was the first instrument he learned. On “Sweet Evil Miss Kisianga”, his inspiration is first and foremost Coltrane (even if leaning more towards Alice than John), this announces the storm to follow.

It is Lancaster’s horn-playing which really stands out: on alto (the sound of which is transformed by an octavoice on one track, "Dr. Oliver W. Lancaster") or soprano saxophones, as well as on flute or bass clarinet, the musician walks a tightrope making the most of all the risks he takes. Using the full register of his instruments, he has fun with the possibilities.

Then, Lancaster invokes or evokes Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and even Prokofiev, before going into a danse alongside Keno Speller on percussion. Above all, he has a unique sound. Byard Lancaster, on whatever instrument he plays and by continually seeking, always ends up hitting the right note... ends up by playing exactement the note he had to play.

The jazz played by the association Byard Lancaster / Clint Jackson III is rare: creative AND recreational. “We the blessed”, is apt listening to this again today.

The magnificent “Love Always” was originally released on the fourth (and last) volume of the Jef Gilson Anthology series released in 1975. Recorded on 8th March 1974, it is a beautiful 15-minute-long modal jazz piece. Four notes from the bass (the relentless Jean-François Catoire, who makes up the rhythm section alongside drummer Jonathan Dickinson and percussionist Keno Speller), and the group is up and running! On piano, Gilson shows the subtle tact of a sideman, leaving the lions’ share of the place to the horns. This allows us to hear the trumpet of Clint Jackson III and the alto (which sometimes sounds almost flute-like) of Byard Lancaster each staking their claim in a long hallucinatory march which moves from moments of direct exaltation to profoundly sensitive collective playing. And if further proof was required of the confidence that Byard Lancaster and Jef Gilson inspire, “Love Always” provides it on this one sided release exclusive to the box set.

Collaborations From the New Berlin Jazz Underground, recorded live at Badehaus Berlin, The 2xLP gatefold vinyl will be exclusively available in a limited edition of 200 copies through HHV as part or their “Summer Of Jazz” campaign.

The Shades Of Oshu event series grew out of a need to create a platform for the re-emerging post-Covid Berlin music scene, to showcase new talent from both the international and local multi cultural creative community, fostering dialogue and collaboration. A joint venture between Oshu Records and Badehaus Berlin, under the curation of Szabolcs Bognár and Katerina “Temkina” Stanislevikj the series combined improvised music performances with special guests, producer showcases and DJ sets with the aim of providing a platform for emerging musical expressions. Every performance you hear on this record was captured between September 2021 and July 2022 during the series. With post production and editing handled by Szabolcs Bognár, the project features artists such as the Moses Yoofee Trio, Àbáse, Wayne Snow, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, Magro, K’boko, Dumama, Ori Jacobson, Kechou, King Owusu and Aduni from the Berlin scene as well as international projects Jazzbois, SunMa (Budapest), Alexander Flood (Australia) or Thamsanqa Vuthela (South Africa).

In harmony with the strongly grooving instrumental framework by Tokyo-based Jazz trio Nautilus, them all together create their own refreshing version of the original and catapult the song into the present.

The vocals are sung by uprising Japanese star R&B and Soul singer-songwriter Ryuto Kasahara who worked together with Grooveman Spot and DJ Mitsu The Beats on this latest releases.

The saxophonist who performed for the protagonist Dai Miyamoto in the animated film "blue Giant" is currently one of the most notable figures in the Japanese jazz scene. This major debut album, his third overall, is co-produced with Bigyuki. After graduating from Berklee College of Music and working in New York, he played with Takuya Kuroda's band, "J-Squad." Upon returning to Japan, he gained significant attention for his saxophone performance in the 2023 animated film "blue GIANT." This highly anticipated major debut album features a trio format with saxophone, keyboard, and drums, and includes all original songs written specifically for this project. The album highlights the remarkable chemistry between him and Bigyuki, showcasing a total sound that is both unique and captivating. The saxophonist's growth, influenced by his participation in "blue GIANT," is evident throughout the album. Joining him and Bigyuki in the trio is JK Kim, a Korean drummer based in New York. Additionally, ermhoi, Yusuke Sase, and Kei Kogane participate as guest artists on select tracks. On July 24th and 25th, he and Bigyuki are set to perform at the San Sebastian International Jazz Festival in Spain, marking a significant step toward global recognition.

The Waffle House index has been measuring the impact of disasters in the USA since 2011: Green = full menu - restaurant has full power, food unlimited, damage at worst limited. Yellow = limited menu - no power, food availability is limited. Red = restaurant closed - serious damage or flooding. Translated to the free-spirited jazz rock of the band Kuhn Fu: the music on the new album Katastrofik Kink Machine jumps back and forth between green and red with enthusiasm and verve, leaving out the tepid middle. There is something old-fashioned about the word jazz rock: music in which soulless virtuosity has replaced spirit and immediacy. However, the guitarist and composer Christian Achim Kühn plays jazz fevered by electric guitar with his band Kuhn Fu, in which the joy of playing and the fun of profound nonsense (and then also: the virtuosity) oozes out of every pore. Not least fun in the extreme: green and red, no yellow.
