Led by Sommer, the release signifies the first chapter of the drummers much much-anticipated Nordic trilogy on April Records, aiming to capture and document Nordic improvisation and composition across three carefully curated ensembles. Bassist Arild Andersens storied career stretches back to the 1970"s as one of ECM s first recordingartists, collaborating with household names of the genre including Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Frisell, John Taylor, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, and the list goes on. Welcoming the opportunity to work with and nurture younger artists, the ensemble was born when Daniel Sommer selected Andersen for a project during his studies at the Danish National Academy of Music. Later, impressed by Luft s performances in Ireland and Norway, Andersen suggested expanding the pair into a trio. A transcendent musical voyage, As Time Passes " blurs the lines of conventional trio roles, and celebrates the evolution of jazz as a fluid, versatile form of expression. By providing each musician the freedom of becoming a key contributor in the melodic discourse, the trio channels the spirit of jazz veterans such as the Bill Evans Trio and free free-jazz ensemble Air, while echoing the sounds and innovations of pan pan-European contemporary jazz. As a young conservatory student back in 2016, Danish trumpeter Anders Malta was invited to participate in a reunion concert with the legendary Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band. He was so taken with the band and the music, that on the spot he decided that he wanted to form his own.In 2020, Anders Malta Almost Big Band played its first concert, going on to play a monthly residency at Christiania Jazz Club in Copenhagen for the past two years. Recorded live over two days at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, the albums raw, warm production captures the energy, intimacy and excitement of a live performance, transporting the listener right in the centre of a pulsating dancefloor. London-based keyboardist and composer Greg Foat is back with his new album, 'The Rituals of Infinity'. Greg's first memory with the piano goes all the way back to his Aunt's house at aged 3 - where he fell off the piano stool. Since then, his relationship with the piano has evolved into a fulfilling, and successful career. He began taking an interest in composing at the age of 11, and truly ignited his love for Jazz after attending a workshop with Jeff Clyne, Olaf Vas, Trevor Tomkins and Nick Weldon at the age of 15. He then studied jazz at Middlesex University, followed by 6 months in Sweden on an Erasmus grant which lead to his first professional studio session there at 21. Greg has worked as a professional musician ever since, and has moulded and wonderfully multifaceted career within the Jazz music genre. Greg is planning a debut performance of 'The Rituals of Infinity' at Worthy Earth Festival in late September, in Hampshire.

'The Rituals of Infinity' album is inspired by many of things. Some titles are named after some iconic science fiction books such as The Rituals Of Infinity, A Private Cosmos, The Dark Labyrinth and The World of the Red Sun. Minerva's Owl, on the other hand, is about the Ancient Greek Legend. "The owl of Minerva takes flight only at dusk." so wrote G. W. F. Hegel, the nineteenth century's major philosopher of history. By that he meant that any given phase of history can be understood only in retrospect — after it's over. A beautifully fitting closing of the album. The album features the legendary Art Themen on Soprano and Tenor Saxophones, Trevor Walker on Trumper and Flugel Horn in a fine supportive role harmonising with Katherine Farnden on Cor Anglais. Natcyet Wakili has such a fluid approach to the drums which really makes the album special, alongside Jasper Osbourne on Bass Guitar. Shawn Lee also stopped by the studio with his horror movie classic waterphone - adding some eery atmospheric finishing touches to the album.

The highly hailed pianist Herbie Hancock commented, “I'm honored to be part of this meaningful project that supports the important work of the Jazz Foundation, who has always been there for musicians going through tough times. They have been an especially critical resource for the community during the pandemic, helping those in need of medical care, putting food on the table and paying their rent.”

Herbie likely wasn’t that prescient, but I wouldn’t doubt his genius. Based on the interplanetary trance funk of Sextant, his 11th studio album, such foresight wouldn’t be surprising. Then and always, Herbie was the master of the road less traveled. He was the light guiding his peers where they needed to go.

Limited to 300 copies, only available at HHV! ‘Les Cigales’ takes its’ sonic cues from the structure of film and TV music from the 1960s and 70s, channelling the influence of film composers such as Francois de Roubaix and David Axelrod, whilst also sitting somewhere between the washed out, sun-soaked sonics of Surprise Chef and Robohands. As the EP unwinds, its narrative reflects a love story, full of longing, melancholy and drama, connecting with the story of Gyptis and Protis – the founding myth of Marseilles – whose love broke convention and welcomed the arrival of foreign people on French soil.

The project follows The Offline’s debut album ‘La couleur de la mer’, released in November 2023, which saw him create his own soundtrack to a film yet to be made. Inducing images of manorial, fog- swept villas at the seas edge, silhouetted sailing boats and cigar-chomping villains attempting to thwart the mission of an imaginary hero, the record is a masterfully composed sonic journey. ‘Les Cigales’ sees him continue to build upon a distinctive sound that moves from dramatic cues to fragile romanticism, incorporating psychedelic spaciness, retro soul and hip-hop sensibilities informed by his extensive record collection.

"Man alive. Galt MacDermot. You know who he is. And if you don’t, you’d better ask somebody. Most famous (probably, in certain circles anyway) as the composer and arranger of the 1969 Grammy-award winning, perennially-running-somewhere musical Hair, which had three no. 1 singles including 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In'. But his catalog is so much more than that. SO much more. He’s incomparable. He composed music for a grip of films and plays, but my favorite is his solo work. (well, with bands he’d put together, but you know what I mean). His body of work includes jazz, soul, and classical and some of it is downright Funky. He’s been sampled by Handsome Boy Modeling School, MF Doom, Run-DMC, DJ Vadim, DJ Premier, Busta Rhymes, and who knows who else. He’s worked with Bernard Purdie, Idris Mohammed, Jimmy Lewis, and countless others. Nothing I can write can do him any justice.

This record here has two different versions of one of my favorites—'Duffer' and 'Duffer in F.' Are they the same song? Yes. Are they different? Yes. Side A, 'Duffer,' is a laid-back, loosey-goosey irresistible groove with killer solos. It’s so chill, but I’ll be damned if you don’t still want to dance to it—maybe even a slowdance with your sweetie or something. It’s a whole vibe—cozy, funky, slow, intimate, yet spacious… I never want it to end. Side B, 'Duffer in F', is the same tune, but with everything tightened up. The groove, the drum kit, heck, even the room it was recorded in.

I can not for the life of me decide which one I like more, but for real though, I want them both on 7”, and thought it would be fun to do a compare/contrast record: The Duffers.

CAN WE Talk About THE Bassline ON Both Versions Though?? Whoooooo boy.

"…I’m a big fan of Benedic Lamdin (aka Nostalgia 77)… Massively talented as a composer, arranger, songwriter, producer, and guitarist across hella genres who’s been quite prolific since he started releasing stuff in 2004. Seriously, check out his catalog- pretty sure that there’s something for everyone there, and also check out the Impossible Ark (his amazing contemporary jazz label) as well. One of my favorite projects of his is a 2010 LP called Skeletons—Smile. From the Bandcamp page of that album: 'These musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions we were working on.' The project started life as material recorded for a library music company, playing into the hands of 'the current vogue for a certain style of African jazz', as Lamdin puts it, in a refreshing bout of honesty. Apparently Lamdin got so absorbed in this process of musical forgery a whole LP emerged, and if the producer wasn't so darned honest, you might never know that this wasn't the work of a genuine, and wholly exciting spiritual jazz troupe. 'Mulatu' was another dream 7 of mine. (yes, I know they all are, but)… It’s just so good; and while I own the Smile LP I just really wanted this record to exist and have it in my collection. It’s a slow burner that take cues from Mulatu Astatke but flipping them a bit and making them even groovier, funkier, and heavier. Dig it. The flip side is 'Positive Force,' an uptempo original composition perfect for backyard barbecues. I was on the fence about what to put on the flip as I like the whole album, but this track is a fan favorite and contrasts nicely with the A side in my opinion."—Devin Limited run of 500 copies.

Set for release at the height of the season it’s dedicated to, ‘Music For Autumn Lovers’ by Adam Scrimshire is an eight track album of lush, mostly acoustic based, minimal instrumentals eliciting a mixture of feelings for this special time of year.

Four tracks originally released on an EP in 2022 are joined by new compositions ‘Hawthorn’, ‘Hazel’, ‘Willow’ and ‘Blackthorn’. Gently finger-picked acoustic guitars cosy up alongside pianos, synthesisers, strings and horns; filtered through an autumnal hue of susurrous production and effects. In turns comforting, melancholic and evolutionary; it feels like an album that can be kept being made and remade forever, like a season in itself.

Both a relentless creator and inspiring champion of new music; South London based Scrimshire has been recording, producing and DJing since the mid 2000s. Amongst his credits, he was featured by the Guardian as one of three producers behind the new wave of UK soul, alongside Inflo (Michael Kiwanuka, Sault, Lil Simz) and Swindle (Joel Culpepper, Greentea Peng, Kojey Radical). His bold 2023 album ‘Paroxysm’ was a response to the absurdity of the breakdown in the UK government, picking up an Album of the Week award on Huey Morgan’s BBC 6 Music show, and 2021’s beautiful ‘Nothing Feels Like Everything’ received an Album of the Year nomination at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards. Scrimshire also somehow finds the time to support a wealth of talent on his label Albert’s Favourites, formed with Dave Koor and Jonny Drop, where they have recently released albums by And Is Phi, Huw Marc Bennet, Inês Loubet, Irini Arabatzi, Jonny Drop & Andrew Ashong, and Qwalia.

Devin Brahja Waldman is a New York saxophonist, drummer, synthesizer player and composer who leads the group BRAHJA. He has performed with Patti Smith, William Parker, Nadah El Shazly, Malcolm Mooney, Thurston Moore, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Charles Hayward, Luke Stewart and Yoshiko Chuma. Waldman is also a member of NYC's Heroes Are Gang Leaders (led by poet Thomas Sayers Ellis and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis), of Sam Shalabi's Land of Kush, and of the Norwegian hardcore group MoE.

In 2022 BRAHJA released the critically acclaimed album 'Watermelancholia' on the Belgian leftfield imprint Cortizona. For his second album on the same Cortizona label, Devin Brahja Waldman gathered a group of insanely gifted and talented musicians to start a new and highly moving musical chapter titled 'Nebulizer'.

Together with Adam Kinner, Georgia Wartel Collins, Earth, Wind and Choir, Luke Stewart, Kenichi Iwasa, Naima Karlsson, Alexis Mercelo, Janice Lowe, Watson and Damon Hankoff, Devin forms a slow-burning fireball unity.

Kokoroko, the London-based contemporary jazz collective, has released their new single ‘Three Piece Suit’ featuring Azekel.

Warm, rich and sumptuous in sound, ‘Three Piece Suit’ is a heartwarming tribute to the Nigerian immigrant experience. An initial draft of the track first began life at Kokoroko’s studio under the working title ‘Get The Message’.

Crackling through the track’s snug and patiently-arranged grooves are subtle touches of funk, adding new dimensions to the band's signature afrobeat and jazz sound in a way that recalls the work of Cymande. Further caressing the instrumentation is the incorporation of the Brazilian nose flute and woozy-sounding synth lines, effortlessly transporting the listeners back in time.

A conversation between Onome Edgeworth, the band’s percussionist and Azekel about their grandfathers who both landed in Balham from Nigeria in the 1960s would yield finishing touches that its rough sketches needed, bringing the song home to its final form.

Speaking on the track’s conception, Onome said: "We wrote the song thinking of our grandfathers arriving in London and the way they carried themselves and dressed in the 1960s. They were part of a dapper and suited generation that sowed the seeds for the worlds we’re building now. It speaks to our sentimental memories of a time that we know we can't have back”.

There was no doubt in Snorre Kirk's mind when he first heard clarinetist and saxophonist Giacomo Smith in London. He immediately knew he had met a man on the same musical wavelength. Then, on Giacomo's recommendation, pianist Joe Webb joined the party, and the stage was suddenly set for a change in Snorre Kirk's work and celebrated career as drummer, composer, and bandleader. The first meetings took place in 2019. The following year, the coronavirus put the music scene on standby, and it wasn't until 2023 that the quartet, which included Giacomo Smith, Joe Webb, Danish bassist Anders Fjeldsted, and Snorre Kirk himself, came together and became what would be his current and permanent primary project. What A Day! is the first release with the new line-up, and the quartet is complemented on three tracks by Alexander Bouton, who fills the role of rhythm guitarist in the same spirit Freddie Green did with Count Basie's band. People are listening and like what they hear - Snorre Kirk's music has palpable appeal. Over the years, his popularity has grown, and he often sells out concerts on European stages. His last album, Top Dog, was in the top 20 on JazzWeek's chart of the most played jazz releases on American radio stations in the Spring and Summer of 2024. It held the number one spot for four weeks - a rare honor for a European jazz musician.
