John Hicks (1941-2006) gave much to jazz over several decades but never really received the appreciation he so richly deserved. As a pianist, he proved himself in the Art Blakey and Betty Carter universities. He was also the prototypical musician's musician, a first-call pianist for many jazz greats and a magnificent accompanist to the art's best saxists, including Pharoah Sanders, Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman, Archie Shepp, and David Murray.
He was often accused of hovering in McCoy Tyner's shadow, which is unfair and untrue. But he evinced a great fondness for Coltrane's music and was often heard on many a Coltrane tribute, showing affection for the saxophonist and his appreciation for Tyner's contribution to Coltrane's finest music.
Another facet of John Hicks' career, which gets even less attention than his wondrous playing, is his ability to craft identifiable compositions that are wandering and melodic, suggestive and malleable yet memorable all at once.
It would be difficult to conceive the ideal tribute to John Hicks. As a jazz contributor, he wasn't easily pigeon-holed. While he was always a (straight) jazz player, he skirted the edges of free jazz and pure romanticism that neither side ever appreciates in the other. But both camps could find moments of joyous life in all the ways Hicks chose to express himself. He was an unmistakably perfect accompanist in any mode. This LP was recorded at the same session as his “Hells Bells” album.

This is a reissue of a now out-of-print album from live trio date by the legendary LA-based pianist, composer and multi-bandleader, Horace Tapscott. Pianist Horace Tapscott is always at his best when he is leading a trio. 'Sketches of Drunken Mary' features some sparkling piano revolving around a most lyrical bass part that is absolutely touching. The piece ends with a long, monstrous drum solo has to be heard to be believed. I recall hearing/seeing the mighty Sonship with John McLaughlin's One Truth band live at Central Park way back in 1979 and being knocked out by his drumming. 'Raisha's New Hip Dance' is a lovely piece that starts with some amazingly powerful and somewhat dark solo piano, with some strong two handed playing going in different directions and then winding down to somber conclusion, then building back up once again. The final piece is called 'Dark Tree' which is a great work that features a colossal, McCoy-like repeating line that is most hypnotic. The trio explodes in waves together, an immensely propulsive circular current at the center of the storm. Roberto Miranda takes an astonishing, fleet-fingered contrabass solo and then Sonship again provides a cosmic gong, cymbals and drum solo. This is a momentous offering from start to finish. It doesn't get any better than this.

* Re-mastering by: Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London / This was Charles Tolliver’s first album as a leader. The setting is unique only because his second Freedom-Black Lion album “The Ringer” and all of his subsequent albums on Strata-East featured his quartet Music Inc. with pianist Stanley Cowell. Here he is surrounded in quartet and quintet formats with a truly stellar cast of the leading players on the New York jazz scene.

Charles plays the role of leader, composer and trumpeter. But it is surely that last role that deserves the most attention. The trumpet is a brass instrument that leans toward a hard sound and staccato phrasing. Yet Tolliver is the quintessence of fluidity. While it may be undeniable that he has learned from his musical heritage and past trumpet masters, a trumpeter of such flow, tone, control, lyricism and creativity is, by definition, a major musician.

Charles Tolliver first came to the professional jazz scene in the mid-sixties, when he first met Jackie McLean. Under McLean’s leadership, he played on a number of Blue Note record sessions, some of which have yet to be released. He contributed original tunes to many of those sessions.

Within a couple of years, Tolliver was a well known figure in New York circles, playing and/or recording with Booker Ervin, Archie Shepp, Andrew Hill, Roy Ayers, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Willie Bobo, Gerald Wilson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Mobley, and many others. His compositions were getting recorded by many artists. He gained his greatest recognition during a two year stint with the Max Roach quintet that also included Gary Bartz and Stanley Cowell.

There is also a previously unreleased bonus track of the song, "Repetition", recorded by Charles for this LP which will be included on this new release of the album. This song was originally made famous by Charlie Parker's LP With Strings.

This album is certainly an important and lasting document in light of the musicians involved and in light of its unique context for Charles Tolliver. But basically, it is just a great album to listen to.

Repress. At the album "Mimis Plessas plays Philicorda" from 1965, the composer Mimis Plessas experimented with Philicorda, a Philips electric instrument attempting a launch in mid-60’s alongside the Hammond organ. The potential of this instrument was pioneering and quite ‘revolutionary’ for that time, which Mimis Plessas saw from the very start. He essentially transcribed seven of his own compositions -plus one by Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Kostas Klavvas, Kostas Giannidis and Kostas Kapnisis- adapting them all after Philicorda’s needs and span of capabilities. The result album was a fresh air of originality: a jazz album blended with music elements of surf, bolero, shake, cha cha, hully gully, bossa nova etc, creating a unique sound, resulting in it being considered the sonic precursor to "Greece goes modern" and remaining rare to this day having not been released on vinyl since then.

The musicians who collaborated at this recording are : Yannis Kanellidis and Yannis Ioannou mandolin, Vassilis Panagiotopoulos trumpet, Yiannis Schizas trombone, Andrea Ortega saxophone, Rigas Saritziotis baritone and tenor saxophone, Nikos Ginos alto saxophone, Titos Kalliris guitar, Vassilis Teknetzoglou drums and Mimi Plessas philicorda.

The recording procedures were hosted at the Finos Film studio, made by the recording engineer Mikes Damalas and the sleeve's photo was taken from Anna Maria Antippa. The reissue has been made on 700 heavy audiophile copies of 200gr vinyl in black color and is accompanied by a two-page insert that includes a text by the authoritative music critic Fontas Troussas and credits, with an English translation by Antonis Xagas and Fotini Zarogikas.

The sound remastered was edited by Yiannis Kyris and the sleeve adaptions were made by Thanassis Xanthakos (Plan 59).

The Jazz Doctors or the Billy Bang Quartet toured Europe in the early 80s, featuring spiritual jazz pioneer saxophonist Frank Lowe and Vietnam vet turned free jazz violinist Billy Bang, the group recorded in 1983 and 1984 in London.

With legendary rhythm section Rafael Garrett and Dennis Charles, they recorded an album for Cadillac that fast became a sought after classic.

The '84 session, with the different but equally astonishing rhythm of Wilber Morris and Thurman Barker, never appeared. Studio problems led to half the album being rendered unusable. Here for the very first time is the music that remained, including a unique and astonishing suite composed by Billy Bang.

Newly remastered from the original tapes at Gearbox studio and including a previously unreleased session, and all on CD for the first time, with new sleeve notes and images by acclaimed author/photographer Val Wilmer.

First time reissue of “Quiero…” by Peruvian-Cuban singer and composer Króffer Jiménez, leader of Poppy y sus Pirañas, one of the key figures in Peruvian tropical music.Recorded in 1969 but not released until 1972, this album comprises guarachas and cumbias that were ahead of their time, mostly original compositions. Unfortunately the album went almost unnoticed back in the day, becoming a sought-after collector’s item in recent times. Quintets such as Compay Quinto, Pedro Miguel y sus Maracaibos and Los Totos were the stars of the Peruvian tropical scene at that time, winning over listeners with their powerful rhythm section and fast-paced melodies. In contrast, the dozen guarachas and cumbias on "Quiero..." are slower and more relaxed, where the elegant intonation displays Króffer’s Cuban roots, with the Pirañas contributing during the more festive moments. The cumbia 'Mala mujer' and the guarachas 'Amar en el mar' and 'El sortilegio' were ahead of their time, as the singing style adopted would only become fashionable from 1971 onwards. 180g vinyl.

Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a 14-member jazz ensemble led by double-bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey, based in the bustling creative city of Leeds in the North of England – home to one of the most innovative and community-based jazz scenes in the UK. First ever commercial releases of New Orleans’ legend Alvin Batiste’s Spiritual Jazz albums created with the college band he instructed and led in Baton Rouge - Goes To Africa With Love and Live at The 1971 American College Jazz Festival Originally given away as souvenirs at Southern University, these albums contains deep Batiste originals and are some of the most sought after albums of Americas 70s jazz underground. Each album contains extensive booklet detailing Batiste’s life and his time spent honing and recording this remarkable band of young students. Goes To Africa With Love was mixed from the original multi-track tapes and is now presented as a 2xLP with never-before-released instrumentals. That one of the great Spiritual Jazz albums of the era could be found in duplicate New Orleans thrift store in the 1980s goes a long way in illustrating the lack of acclaim this special and overlooked album maintained, even in a city where the Batiste name is musical royalty. The Southern University albums Alvin Batiste offered the world were novelies, not worthy of serious consideration, a moment captured, but not necessarily worthy of being collected or preserved by anyone not immediately involved in its creation. That changes now. With the release of the two Southern University albums, Now-Again continues a conversation begun with the late Kashmere Stage Band director Conrad O. Johnson and the issue of his high school students’ music as Texas Thunder Soul, and the continued belief that beautiful music created by youth - even under the most adverse circumstances - can always inspire us.

Requiem for Jazz is a 12-movement suite composed and arranged by Angel Bat Dawid, inspired in part by dialogue from Edward O. Bland"s 1959 film "The Cry of Jazz."The original form of the music was premiered at the 2019 edition of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago, where Angel conducted a multigenerational fifteen-piece instrumental ensemble (all Black musicians from Chicago"s creative music community) alongside a fourperson choir (featuring singers from Black Monument Ensemble), dancers, and visual artists in performance.Angel mixed and post-produced recordings from the performance - adding interludes, vocals and additional sounds, as well as transcribing a piece from "The Cry of Jazz" film. The final movement of Requiem for Jazz features Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Their contributions were recorded remotely at the historic Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra in Philadelphia in late 2020.

In 1970, Svein Finnerud Trio (As They Were Then Named), Released "Plastic Sun", Still One Of The Most Iconic Albums In Norwegian Jazz. Their Second Album, Issued On The Sonet Label In An Eye Catching, Psychedelic Gatefold Sleeve, Attracted Due Attention From The More Curious Sections Of The Rock Audience. The Same Year Would See The Only Release From Another Great Crossover Trio, Min Bul, Sharing The Same Rhythm Section Of Andresen And Rud, This Time With Guitarist Terje Rypdal As The Leader (It's Fair To Assume That Andresen And Rud Would Strongly Oppose To The Thought Of Anyone Being The Leader, Though...). Although "Plastic Sun" Would Mark The Beginning Of A Very Fruitful Period In Norwegian Jazz, With Jan Garbarek And Terje Rypdal Releasing Strong Ecm Debuts The Following Year, It Was Probably Dawning On The More Commercially Oriented Sections Of The Record Business That The Sales Didn't Exactly Hit The Roof. Thus, When It Was Time For A Follow-Up In 1974, The Already Recorded "Thoughts" Was Shelved Due To Lack Of Funding And Potential Labels Getting Cold Feet. It Wasn't To Be Released Until 1985, On Henie Onstad Art Center's In-House Prisma Label. The Center Was Like A Home To The Trio, They Played Concerts There And "Thoughts" Was Actually Recorded At The Center. Hoac Always Had A Special Connection With The More Experimental Music Scenes Right From The Opening In 1968, With Groups And Artists Like Soft Machine, Henry Cow, John Cage, Terry Riley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Arne Nordheim And Many Others Performing. Finnerud And Andresen Were Close Friends Since Youth And Formed The Trio In 1967 After Approaching Rud With The Clear Intention Of Leaving "Swing", As They Called It, And Go In A More Avant Garde Direction. Their Self-Titled Debut Album Was Released The Following Year, But It Was Always The Live Situation That Was Their Natural Habitat, With Concerts Often Being More Like Performance Art Or Happenings. They Had Several Projects Going With Poets, Writers, Painters And Contemporary Composers...

As David Fricke Pointed Out In His Liner Notes To "Q", The Previous Album From This Expanded Edition Of Krokofant, This Is Not Just Another Novelty Guest-Project. In Fact, All The Involved Were So Happy After Finishing "Q" That A Follow-Up Was Decided Upon Straight Away. So Here It Is, With Four New Tunes From Guitarist And Leader Tom Hasslan, Each Clocking In Between Eight And Twelve Minutes. Originally A Guitar And Drums Duo, Tom And Axel Met In A Guitar Shop In Kongsberg, A Town In Southern Norway Famous For Its Annual Jazz Festival Since 1964, And Recognised For Its Experimental And Innovative Profile. Jorgen Was Invited To Join Them For The Sessions That Resulted In Their Self-Titled Debut Album In February 2014. Two More Albums Followed In 2015 And 2017.When Considering Guest Musicians For "Q", To Become Their Fourth Album, Keyboard Maestro Ståle Storlokken (Elephant9, Supersilent, Terje Rypdal) Was The Trio's First Choice. He Had Seen Krokofant Live In 2015 And, In His Own Words, "Had An Instant Kick", So He Said Yes Straight Away. Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Scorch Trio, The Thing, Atomic) Had Seen Them The Same Year, And After A Few Backstage Beers Practically Invited Himself To Join Up At Some Time. By His Introduction, A "Proper" Rhythm Section Was Born And Work Was Lifted From Hasslan's Shoulders. Hasslan's Tunes Are Perfect Vehicles For Storlokken To Present The Full Scope Of His Playing; From Sheer Pastoral Beauty To Full On Jazz Skronk. The Same Can Be Said About Mathisen, Who Is Given Ample Room For Soloing. The Tunes Are Rich In Harmonic Structures And Melodic Hooks, But There Is Also Room For Adventures Into More Free Passages. Many Names Have Been Mentioned In Connection With Krokofant Over The Years, But With The Distinctive Sax And Organ Combination, It's Difficult Not Think Of Van Der Graaf Generator In Their Prime. The wisdom of Tony Allen's words was as deep as his grooves, and these two sentences, which announce the dozen songs that follow, truly capture the spirit of There is No End. Tony’s motivating concept and desire was to work with younger artists, and especially the new generation of rappers, and give them voice in a time of global turmoil when music has never been more important – not necessarily as a "weapon" for the future in the manner of Fela's violently political songs, but also as medicine to heal a fractured world today.

Following in the footsteps of the landmark 1966 double-quartet recording by Joe Harriott and John Mayer, Indian born musician Amancio D’Silva produced some of the most adventurous and sophis-ticated recordings within the canon of ‘indo-jazz’, a term used to define a pioneering east meets west synthesis that reflected the shifting musical and cultural landscape of post-war Britain. An ex-periment which reached a pinnacle in 1972 with D’Silva’s seminal recording Dream Sequence by Cosmic Eye (The Roundtable TRZY001), an adventurous fusion of modal jazz and Indian classical music viewed through the psychedelic lens of swinging London. Exotic third-stream jazz conceived by a visionary composer whose virtuosic technique and deeply emotive guitar playing defined his two earlier and now legendary 1969 UK jazz albums Integration and Hum Dono with Joe Harriott, both recorded for the much celebrated Lansdowne label.

Also recorded in 1972 although not released at the time was Konkan Dance, an unofficial sequel to Dream Sequence that further explored the unchartered possibilities of an Indian music-jazz fusion. Featuring many of the same personnel, this session also included support from Don Rendell and Alan Branscombe, two giants of the UK jazz scene who add serious credentials to D’Silva’s singu-lar and intimate compositions. For reasons unknown the album was cancelled by Lansdowne at the time and never saw the light of day until being resurrected again in the 2000s. The Roundtable are pleased to once again showcase this important artist and present a new addition of this incredible and almost forgotten piece of the Amancio D’Silva story. Pressed on 180g vinyl and packaged in a custom 1960s-style flip-back sleeve.

Recorded in ’73 and rejected by tin-eared major label execs in ’75, Crystal Spears (or “Crystal Clear” as it appears on the tape box) subsumes a cathartic brawl between Minimoog and Yamaha combo organ, with percussionists providing tonal textures, and plaintive oboe colliding with roaring electronic keyboards over waves of rollicking marimba, devilishly chattering below the fray. Crystal Spears is Ra’s once lost aural cinematheque! Includes a quad-ra-color Sun Ra poster!
Crystal Spears, intended for release in 1975 by ABC/Impulse! and assigned catalog # AS-9297, was ultimately rejected by the label. Ra and business manager Alton Abraham retained the rights, rechristened the album Crystal Clear and assigned Saturn Records catalog # 562—but they never got around to issuing it. The first three tracks on this album were mastered from that tape, a 1/4-inch four-track (15 ips) brand favored by home recording enthusiasts—and generally disfavored by pro engineers. The sessions took place at Variety Recording Studio in New York on February 3, 1973, a month before the Ark returned on March 8 to record Cymbals, as well as tracks issued decades later under the title Sign Of The Myth (and perhaps even Pathways To Unknown Worlds).
