Mermaids really do exist, and I discovered this a few days ago. I came across the fantastic story of the Ama, literally the women of the sea. They live in Toba Bay, Japan, and have a long-established custom that has been passed on from one generation to another for more than two thousand years. Not so few. What do they do? They jump into the sea half-naked to fish for seaweed, octopus and, above all, for pearls. They are the real pearl fisherwomen. They reach a depth of just under 30m, with only the strength of their lungs. They are as beautiful as the sun. When they ascend, due to a strange play of sounds and noises coming from their hyperventilating lungs, they emit a kind of whistle that sounds like the cry of dolphins. Or more precisely, the song of mermaids. They go down into the deep sea and search for pearls. When out of the water, they train all their lives and help each other passing on practices and secrets, confiding in one another to stay united. And they are cohesive, never envious of one another, just a great sense of belonging. With his new work Gianluca seems to have drawn from this ancient hunt, made up of memories and traces. He submerged and searched in the remotest memories and ancestral sounds of skins, streets, eras and styles. With his appreciation he has connected black ghettos, slums, townships, ‘the bronx’ of all over the world and explored them with the curious sounds of contemporaneity. Gianluca also has a very cohesive community of musicians around him, he is proud of this, and with them he finds his element, his peace. ‘Anyone who doesn’t get along with musicians has an unresolved problem,’ he tells me. And that’s why he makes a point of letting it be known that each of the five well-known members of his Cosmic Band and the many valuable guests who populate this new record, contributed decisively to the creation of these crazy tracks. In what way? By using the words of their instruments, generating a language that serves precisely to connect past and present, useful for finding the thread of dialogue. A continuous back-and-forth between generations. To speak of the best in the field is an idle exercise: all have striven in the realisation of the composition, all deserve full praise, none excluded. Ovations for all. If you think you are only listening to jazz, you are sadly mistaken. There are exotic ghosts, promises of evasion. There is a celebration of the human condition. There is a life in here. A plunge into the heart of music and its many languages. A record about confrontation on words, about memory, about being true to oneself. But it is also a work on how complicated it is to come to terms with what we call identity, and Gianluca rewrites this identity in his own way. A year after Alain Eskinasi released his solo album Many Worlds, One Tribe, he rejoined William Aura and Craig Dobbin to write and produce Vital Force, 3rd Force’s third studio album in 1997. Signe Emmeluth is a Danish saxophonist and composer educated by the Jazz Department in Trondheim and is currently based in Oslo. Emmeluth has recently become a rising star on the international scene for improvised music. She has her own quartet Emmeluth’s Amoeba and has worked with Trondheim Jazzorkester, John Edwards, Tony Buck, Paal Nilssen-Love, Mats Gustafsson and Mette Rasmussen to name a few.'

Thisensemble's solos spring from collective improvisations and atumultuous backbeat, loosely inspired by the creations ofColtrane, Coleman, Albert Ayler, and their brethren. The de factoleader was Richard "Dickie" Landry, a saxophonist andkeyboardist who joined composer Philip Glass's group in 1969.Landry had become a fixture in downtown New York's loft and artscenes at the close of the 1960s, after he high-tailed it by carfrom Louisiana to the Lower East Side and auspiciouslyencountered Ornette Coleman at the Village Gate the night of hisarrival.For this concert, fellow Glass reedists Jon Smith and Richard Peckjoined in, alongside Rusty Gilder and Robert Prado, both doublingon bass (upright and electric) and trumpet. The drum chair wasoccupied by New Orleans firecracker David Lee, Jr., who broughtalto saxophonist Alan Braufman along for the session (Braufmanwas the only non-Louisiana player in the band). He said `what do you mean?' I hadrecorded several pieces with Kurt Munkcasi and walked around theset playing the music on a boom box."The set features one solo each by Landry and contrabassist RustyGilder, a duo for the tenor saxophones of Landry and RichardPeck, and an ensemble piece for Landry, Peck, Gilder, trumpeterRobert Prado, and drummer David Lee, Jr. Starting the record offis "Requiem for Some," inspired by Gil Evans' long, placid tones.The anchor is Lee's dry cymbal attack and fancy footwork,dancing around overlapping and recombining horns, chords heldjust shy of splintering. With Maternity Beat, Hedvig Mollestad has surpassed herself, most significantly as a composer and arranger, and delivered her magnum opus so far. And with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra she found the perfect ensemble to perform it. They have a long tradition for collaborations like this, we can mention Chick Corea, Jason Moran and Marius Neset among many others. And as always, Hedvig truly shines as a guitarist. Maternity Beat is Hedvig's third "solo" album. It was commissioned by Molde International Jazz Festival and premiered in July 2020, later the same year streamed at London Jazz Festival. The recording took place in Athletic Sound in Halden in October 2021. Since she received the festival's talent price in 2009 and signed to Rune Grammofon the following year, we have had the great pleasure to release seven albums by her trio as well as two solo albums, all receiving wide international acclaim in both jazz and rock camps. To complete the circle, Hedvig has been chosen as next year's Artist in Residence at the festival, a most prestigious institution in Norwegian jazz, held by John Zorn this year and initiated by Chick Corea in 2000 and Pat Metheny in 2001.

"Who Do You Love The Most?" is the young trio's third album in just over four years, and continues in the tradition of their two previous efforts; beautiful and evocative melodies, rich on harmonies, often rhythmically complex textures and a typically folk-like Scandinavian character with the occasional gospel feel. The album's 10 songs are all Mulelid originals, except for a gripping cover of Judee Sill's The Archetypical Man. Two of the originals are the trio's versions of songs that first appeared on the pianist's much lauded solo piano album ("Piano") from last year. Kjetil André Mulelid (31) comes across as an exceptionally mature pianist and composer. The trio's 2017 debut "Not Nearly Enough To Buy A House" received wide international acclaim, with writers most typically mentioning Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. The praise continued for 2019's follow-up "What You Thought Was Home", with the Jazz Journal giving it a 5/5 rating and calling it "some of the most captivating music I've heard in quite some while". All About Jazz noted the maturity of the work, feeling like coming from three well-seasoned pros. Mulelid grew up in the small village of Hurdal, and started playing the piano when he was nine, after hearing Chopin on the stereo. Later he did a bachelor degree in jazz performance at NTNU in Trondheim, blessed with top teachers such as Erling Aksdal, Vigleik Storaas and Espen Berg. He is also a member of jazz quartet Wako. Bjorn Marius Hegge (33) has been making waves on the Norwegian jazz scene lately, with his quintet's debut album "Hegge" winning a Norwegian Grammy. He has his own trio as well, with pianist Oscar Grönberg and young drummer ace Hans Hulbækmo (Moskus). In 2019 he released "Ideas" with Axel Dörner, Rudi Mahall, Håvard Wiik and Hans Hulbækmo. Hamburg based producer and drummer Silvan Strauss counts as one of the outstanding new

"Before he rose to jazz renown as one-third of The Bad Plus, bassist Reid Anderson put out two albums on Fresh Sound New Talent, 'Dirty Showtunes' and 'Abolish Bad Architecture,' that stand up as classics of turn-of-the-millennium New York jazz. Anderson remembers these quartet dates as his first forays into original composition, full of dark and intriguing harmony and quirks of form that were forward-thinking in an acoustic jazz mold.

After the two initial albums, Anderson underwent what he describes as “a very conscious and discernible shift” in 2000 with his third Fsnt release, 'The Vastness of Space.' The writing was starker and simpler in a sense, more triadic and rock-edged in its language, moving decisively toward the sound he would pursue full-time with The Bad Plus. Two tracks from Vastness, “Prehensile Dream” and “Silence Is the Question,” became Bad Plus numbers. “Whatever you can say my style is,” Anderson remarks, “I think it really began with The Vastness of Space.”

Vastness features a quintet with the beating heart of a rock band. Andrew D’Angelo and Bill McHenry, saxophonists with impressive track records as leaders ever since, brought two distinct energies and horn approaches to Anderson’s early tunes yet functioned with seamless compatibility as a frontline. (“The Owl” is McHenry’s nickname.) Ben Monder, soft-spoken guitar giant of our time, provided just the right touch whether doubling melodies, laying down chords or venturing poignant solo flights, giving every song his own stamp (not to mention a harmonic underpinning quite unlike Ethan Iverson’s piano on the two previous Anderson discs). Drummer Marlon Browden, now in Berlin and focusing on songwriting and electronics as a multi-instrumentalist, has a loose and funky flow that suits Anderson as a bassist and gives the session lots of its grit.

“The Enthusiast,” “The Owl” and “The Captain” are rock-inflected anthems with a direct and inescapable lyricism, but also an element of raw free jazz. There are slow tempos and yearning romantic moods (“Foxy,” “Talons,” “Melismatic Clouds of Joy”) as well, or atmospheric and asymetrically grooving episodes such as “Reclusive.” There is complexity, counterpoint, polyrhythm, orchestration, dynamic contrast and a certain wildness to the album, a stylistically searching aesthetic that paved the way not only for The Bad Plus, but also Anderson’s Golden Valley Is Now collaboration with Craig Taborn and Dave King, or his electronics work with the adventurous Jeff Ballard led group Fairgrounds.

Years ago Anderson told me that once he has a concept for a song in his brain, to commit it to paper is already somehow to dilute or corrupt it. A necessary stage in the process, perhaps, akin to getting a bicycle tire fully inflated but then having to let just a bit of air escape when disengaging the pump. The point being: if 'The Vastness of Space' is but an approximation of the fully realized music Anderson was hearing in his head, then just imagine..."

Y Bülbül is back on the controls accompanied by Yumurta, a percussionist from Istanbul. Pingipung introduced the London based artist in 2020 with his psychedelic, synth-laden debut “Fever”.

“Not One, Not Two” is based on a one-way transmission of improvised drum recordings from an industrial estate in Maslak, Istanbul to another one in Tottenham, London, where Y Bülbül laid down fragmented layers of bass, synths, guitars and field recordings over Yumurta’s singular drum takes. The result is a free-form deep listening album for fans of dub, ambient and kosmische music, where the groove and harmonies are mystically interwoven, yet somehow manage to stay on the brink of collapse. Although the sessions were non concurrent and scattered over two continents, the collaboration evokes scenes of a telepathic communion where individual perspectives, circumstances and stories are exchanged between the two.

Resembling Moondog, Holy Tongue or Luis Paniagua in the sense that they favor the raw over the polished, holistic presence over conceptual perfection and questions over answers, the duo’s focus on bare sounds and repetition guides the listener throughout the album. The ride cymbal opening the minimalistic “I’m This”, for instance, briskly disarms the listener who might have been looking for more traditional songwriting or production clues. There are plenty of immediately rewarding moments too in “Not One, Not Two,” like the organic acid bassline in “Maurin Quina”, the euphoric drum fills of “Big K” and the intoxicating groove of the hypnotic vibe-setter “Jah Oto”.

Bülbül is Turkish for a singing bird while Yumurta simply means egg. Which one is first? Who is to follow? It’s this enigmatic entanglement between the two artists which creates the lurking tension, emphasized by the Zen Kōan-like title. The beauty in this album is a peculiar one, and it certainly is a rabbit hole too. Dissonance is fluid as everything moves, and whenever two sounds collide, a third one emerges.

The album is a dedication to the world of birds, to the creatures of the world and their migrations. The idea for this album stems from the great energy and everyday courage needed by “the artist” to express himself, trying to break into the everyday world, in this case the world of sound. It comes from the sky, as if it was an alien sound that comes in peace, to find its own space among the noises and “music” of contemporary civilisation and, like everything that is different, is greeted with suspicion and kept at a distance. Inspiration and the creative act come from afar, from an unknown world, and in order to reach us, conductive copper, they have to go through a long process of migration and integration. The hustle and bustle of the world flattens the curiosity to explore the experience of what comes from elsewhere and activates mechanisms of emotional detachment that lead to assessing the enterprise of migration as a petty act of conquest. But this is not always the case. What if these migrations were transformed from news stories into legends and heroic acts? What if the tale of the journey was an adventure novel that could be shared with young and old? What if the story of a child who travels miles to escape from war was proposed to the western world in the same way as we read about the heroic migration of the Limosa, a bird that travels more than 13.000 km without feeding and stopping? What would it change? The answer is not contained in my music, but within there is the hope that migrations, of all kinds and creatures, can be written and told as great modern classics, contemporary legends, new popular adventures that destroy the fear of arrival to make way for the landing of our favourite hero. I wanted to tell you six stories where extraordinary birds are involved.

Coming off the back of covers on CRACK and PERFECT Magazine cktrl announces his highly anticipated new EP Zero. The producer and multi-instrumentalist shares his latest blend of contemporary-classical and electronic R&B that features a collaboration with GRAMMY Award-nominated singer, songwriter 'Mereba' with artwork captured by multi-award winning Campbell Addy. The follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed EP 'robyn' which charted a journey from heartbreak to optimism, 'zero' is a tender exploration into love. As a genre-spanning artist whose music waives between R&B, jazz and neo-classical, cktrl's latest record builds on his emotive sound whilst leaning towards a more electronic-tinged style of production with stunning featured vocals. On the project, cktrl says: "ZERO allowed me to explore my journeys in knowing love. And as a result I now know that I need to allow myself to let my relationships be what they're meant (to manifest organically) free of expectations and without dreams of an idea of someone. Past hurt definitely informed my decisions but it was so crucial for me to grieve those feelings from ROBYN and learn how to be gentle with myself. Just to be able to feel something new, loving again is always different and exciting, once you can open up. ZERO is that journey of ending up back where you started but different, loved and willing to give." The EP opens with the touching 'mazes' - initially released back in May via a beautifully crafted video courtesy of Yasser Abubeker. A stark departure from cktrl's previous work, 'Yield' is a celestial and palpably more inward body of work that harkens back to the pre-electric age of modal jazz while simultaneously pulling in elements from the disciplines of classical and baroque. Speaking on the project's sonic identity, cktrl says: "I want to be able to show that you can make things from scratch again that have that feeling and beauty without having to sample an old record. Even though that's an art-form within itself, I want to show raw orchestration and instrumentation can be the sole source". As an intentionally instrumental project with minimal vocals, cktrl wants prospective listeners to see these new songs as guided meditations where they can wholly insert themselves in it. Eliciting and reaping whatever feelings come to the fore. cktrl has a tune for every occasion: as content making beats by himself at home in Lewisham as he is amongst this generation's fashion and cultural vanguards. Moulded by a unique blend of his West Indian heritage, years of classical training in both the clarinet and saxophone, cktrl strives to do what hasn't been done before. Nichunimu is a Chilean improvisational trio working at the edges of free jazz, ritualism, noise, minimalism and krautrock music. Since 2014, Benjamin Vergara (Trumpet), Nicolás Carrasco (Synthesizer) and Matías Mardones (Percussion) have been inspired by repetition, textures and friendship through the sound, focusing on circular shapes in music that bind them together. Based between the cities of Valdivia and Santiago, their members have also collaborated on projects like La Kut, Cariñito 3, Dubitativos, representing a substantial part of Chile’s experimental scene in the last 20 years. On this project, Un Cacho de Metal, Un Resto de Vaivén, which was recorded the day after their performance at Relincha Festival, the trio was again inspired by patterns of circularity and repetition, tending towads sweet sounds like on “Entrechócanse,” darker affect on “Suplidos,” and experimental noise music on the opening track “Cachos.” Their music, eternally youthful, gracefully combines acoustic and electronic effects.

Erlend Apneseth is one of Norway's foremost Hardanger fiddle players and folk musicians. After being widely recognized with the award-winning and critically acclaimed Erlend Apneseth Trio, he now returns with an acoustic soloalbum. This is the first time since his debut album "Blikkspor" (2013) that he has put the soloistic performance in focus, and this time the unique acoustics in Emmanuel Vigeland's Mausoleum sets the scene for his improvisations and compositions. "The Hardanger fiddle is traditionally a soloistic instrument. For me, one of the most fascinating things about the instrument is its ability to fill a whole room with sound all by itself. Even though I've been working in an electro-acoustic universe the last years, I've never left the acoustic approach to the Hardanger fiddle, and I now felt the time had come to do something all alone again." Even though Apneseth is rooted in traditional music, he has immersed himself in improvisation and alternative sonic-and pizzicato-technics on the Hardanger fiddle, which makes him stand out with his very own musical expression. After incessantly exploring his instrument for many years, this album can be seen as a personal catalogue of the Hardanger fiddle's sonic possibilities. Erlend Apneseth has released eight albums, received numerous awards, among them "Grappas Debutantpris" and "Gammleng-prisen", and no less than five nominations for the Norwegian Grammy's. In 2019 he received the Norwegian Grammy's award in the Open Cathegory for his album "Salika, Molika", with Erlend Apneseth Trio and Frode Haltli. The album also received the NOPA-award and was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize. Apneseth has written commissioned works for Kongsberg Jazzfestival, Fordefestivalen and Ultima, and toured extensively in Europe the past years. Since 2021 he has collaborated with the composer Orjan Matre on new works for Hardanger Fiddle and The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

As Far As Death is the cross-generational debut of fire music evangelist and saxophonist Paul Flaherty with double bassist and composer Zach Rowden. The Connecticut natives forge an album of dynamic free jazz interplay that also draws on imporous textures of contemporary music - an ecstatic reflection.After a half century of blowing the alto and tenor saxes, Flaherty's playing continues to molt and electrify. Whether solo, or with collaborators (Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano, Bill Nace, Daniel Carter, etc.), his blues-based, lyrical melodies anchor lung-bursting gallops.Rowden - whether as Tongue Depressor (a string duo with Henry Birdsey), in performance with cellist Leila Bordreuil, or his own musique concrète constructions - balances harshness and elegiac drones. His past releases resemble resolute exploration into acoustics and noise.Together, Flaherty's monstrous howl is perfectly matched by Rowden's subterranean pitched drone and glacial pace. Each offers weeping lurches of tune, gasps of balladry and microtonal fields of interplay on five pieces. The side-long "Thrown Shadows" is an epic passage of avant jazz vs minimalism, as Rowden's low-register bowing offers a blackened landscape for Flaherty's most mournful notes.
