A massive favorite with audiences who’ve attended Danny Krivit’s sets around the world, his “Churchapella” edit of Madonna's “Like A Prayer" is finally on wax. One of the singer’s greatest tracks, it has always fascinated with its combination of the sacred and the profane, leaving it up to the listener whether she is referring to a secular or holy love. In Krivit’s hands, focused largely on the undeniably massive sound of the Andre Crouch Choir, the divine nature of the lyrics shine through. Uplifting, moving, even transcendent when presented at the right moments, it’s both an inspiring piece of music and a seriously powerful DJ tool.

“Like A Prayer” is paired on the flip side with a fantastic edit of the Clark Sisters funky, slinky rare groove classic “Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).” Never officially released on 7-inch before, Krivit has taken the loose original recording and given it a steady pulse not by adding post-production elements, but via his experienced hand at building a musical movement that audiences will respond to. A slight tempo change, a bit of careful repetition, and at last connoisseurs of the smaller format vinyl have a definitive version of this powerful song.

An’archives are thrilled to announce the release of Ricshari, the first LP from Japanese free improvising duo MAI MAO. Consisting of Shizuo Uchida of Hasegawa-Shizuo, Albedo Gravitas, Archeus, Kito Muzukumi Rouber, Terror Shit, UH, etc. on bass, and Kyosuke Terada, of HUH (who have their own release due on An’archives soon), Terror Shit, Bay City Rolaz, Praymate, The Obey Unit, etc. on guitar, they’ve previously released two wild cassettes, Curvature Improvement Plan (Haang Niap, 2020) and Folk Dope Rally (2021), both documenting one-take improvisations from live gigs. Ricshari was recorded by Nobuki Nishiyama in January 2021, and is proof, if any was needed, that this duo is one of the most fiercely unique, out-there units currently extant – in Japan, or anywhere, for that matter.

The music of MAI MAO seems to proceed by opposites and juxtaposition, shifting from frantic, hectic runs of splattering note spray to moments of granular stasis, where Uchida and Terada coax their instruments into and out of deep wells of silence, or rest, temporarily, in a lagoon of fermenting fuzz. Spiralling kinetics are largely the order of the day, though – the opener, “Chew a flying flash prayer”, skitters here and there, guitar and bass jumping over one another in games of leapfrog and Twister, finding new ways to perplex and puzzle the listener, and perhaps each other in the process, Uchida and Terada fully committed to the short-circuiting spirit of the moment.

The energy here is hyperactive, but it also speaks of a curious and committed attention to improvisatory responsiveness, one that’s just as likely to fork off into different directions in a split second – it’s real edge-of-the-seat stuff, as though the hands are moving too fast for the mind to follow. That’s all the better, then, to let the gush of genuinely free-thinking, devoted duo improvisation to fly at its most playful and intelligent. File next to the likes of Davey Williams & LaDonna Smith and their TransMuseq companions, or the wickedly perplexing bass-synth/trombone duets of Dave Dove Paul Duo, and you’ve some idea of what’s going on here, provisionally at least, ‘cos this one’s an enthralling, yet welcoming, head-scratcher of the highest calibre.

The Amsterdam based New Cool Collective has released an impressive amount of albums within the last 28 years. With an astonishingly diverse list of collaborations ranging from Matt Bianco and Tony Allen to Orchestra Baobab’s saxman Thierno Koité. Awards for film scores, hit records, popularity polls, and even a style award for Benjamin Herman’s impeccable wardrobe. New Cool Collective has become an extremely tight unit, totally at ease performing on live television shows, stage plays, giant stages, tiny clubs, jazz festivals, pop festivals, world music festivals and anything else you can think of.

Playing a familiar mix of Jazz, Latin, Afrobeat and Boogaloo. “In 2005 we set out to record an album reflecting this and came up with some great tracks full of energetic ideas from all kinds of sources. After touring with Tony Allen and Ali Boulo Santo we decided to open our music even further. We booked Studio 150 and invited Tony to stick around in Amsterdam for an extra day. Instead of recording Willem’s big band charts we wanted to see what would happen without a safety net and decided to wing it. We would have been happy with one or hopefully two extra tracks, but six hours later we had a whole album. Each tune is improvised, beamed down directly from something that just happened to be in the air that day. We tied up a few loose ends afterwards, but basically what you hear is the sound of nine guys creating music in its purest form. This and our previously recorded material were way too much for one cd. Instead of cutting everything down to bite size fragments we decided to give you an uncut version of the pure New Cool Collective Sound. This became the double-cd Trippin’ which we released in 2006. With further partnerships as remixers, producers and DJs the pair called it quits on the music industry sometime around the turn of the millennium. In 2019 they bumped into each other at the world famous 100 Club in London's Oxford Street at a gig featuring a new incarnation of Mother Earth with Matt Deighton from the original line-up. The first BDQ album came from the conversations that Stephen and Jon had that night. Indeed it was on the 94 Bus back to Acton (West London) the Bunny decided that he and Jon DeBrett should make music again. As little as a few weeks later they were back in the studio and after the success of BDQ we now have the joy of listening to BDQ 2.

Released in 1975, Farewell To The Welfare' is the only Tribe release to actually have “The Tribe” in the artist name! Originally released on 7” vinyl by “Wendell Harrison and The Tribe” without a cover, we’re reissuing the album with original artwork and modern remastering on limited edition 45rpm vinyl!

As you would expect from the sole release with “The Tribe” as part of the artist name, Wendell Harrison (ts. fl.), Phil Ranelin (tbn.), Harold McKinney (pf.), and Lopez Leon (ba.) are all present, with Harrison playing one of the most electrifying solos of his career over a breakneck jazz-funk beat. But that’s not it! The Tribe are here in full force, with Detroit musicians Ron English (gt.), George Davidson (ds.), and Ralph Jones (sax.) also making appearances on the track.

Farewell To The Welfare is jazz-funk of the highest caliber, with wah’d out staccato guitar strumming, unison horn lines, and a groove so tight you couldn’t slide a piece of paper in it. Harrison’s fantastic solo at the beginning of the solo section is followed by Jones on the soprano saxophone, his tone almost bracing as he occasionally pushes the boundaries of harmony with extended lines before making his way back home. The track is rounded out by a solo from English. Compared to the fiery solos from the two saxophonists before him, it seems understated. But his mellow tone and impeccable phrasing fit perfectly with the rhythm section, playing off of McKinney’s piano lines and Leon’s bass.

Reissued for the first time ever with artwork made specifically for this release and modern digital remastering, this is sure to be one of the hottest 7”s of this year!

Taiwan meets Pittsburg! Chien Chien Lu is the Taiwanese vibraphonist whose debut album, “The Path” made huge waves in 2020 with a Downbeat critics poll naming her the “vibraphone rising star”. Richie Goods is the award-winning bassist, whose incredible talent and experience playing with international stars such as Alicia Keys and Common, has secured him a position as the youngest musician to ever be inducted into Philadelphia’s Jazz Hall of Fame. The two meet in an explosion of talent on their newest LP, “Connected”; also featuring a host of talented musicians such as Sy Smith (vo.), David Frasier Jr. (ds), and Bigyuki (pf.).

The album was born from conversations held during lockdown, where Lu and Goods, both residing in New York, contemplated their roots and the connotations a global pandemic, and social movement were making apparent. Despite the often heavy subject matter that inspired it, the music is light and groovy, with the two leaders shared love for 90s R&B and soul apparent throughout. Lead single “Rain” is a cover of the classic track by SWV (which itself sampled Jaco Pastorius’s “Portrait Of Tracy”), and where SWV’s version was all laid-back drum beats and thinly-veiled innuendos, Goods and Lu’s version is forward-thinking jazz; with atmospheric chords, and what may just be one of Lu’s best solos ever. Opener “Water/H2O”, featuring acclaimed R&B singer Sy Smith takes that a step further, with Smith’s soulful vocals perfectly complementing a jazz band at the height of their powers.

The long-awaited release of Blood In My Eye (A Soul Insurgent Guide), the debut release of Baltimore’s own Konjur Collective. Blood In My Eye is a super special record for many reasons. One, the roots of this LP stem from the ever-expansive creative process of percussionist Bashi Rose. A long-time creator in many mediums, Bashi is probably responsible for leading many Baltimore youth into various forms of expression via mentorship, performing arts, and deep conversation. Bashi has been one of my biggest influences over the years. Two, the record is the foundation on which cow: Music sits. It was during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic that Bashi shared with me the record in its unmastered form. After giving it a few listens I knew that Astral Spirits would be a great place to release this masterpiece. After a few initial meetings with Nate Cross and the various members of the Collective, my dream of cow: Music was born. Though Chris Williams Quintet’s ‘Live’ was the first release, it was Blood In My Eye that made our start possible. Three, Baltimore, Maryland has always been a hotbed of musical activity. Legends such as Chick Webb, Billie Holiday, Stanley Cowell, Lafayette Gilchrist, Vattel Cherry, and Gary Bartz have all called the city home at some point in time. Blood In My Eye is not only an album that works as a dedication to political prisoner / revolutionary George Jackson but a new chapter in Baltimore’s recorded musical history. For far too long the city has quietly created while other cities have flourished. Well, that is about to change. The 2xLP suite is a rollercoaster ride of Black Empowerment and emotional expression like nothing else available today. The first release on the Astral Spirits subsidiary, cow:Music.

Sébastien Léger is one of the most influential electronic music producers with sold-out shows, number one singles, and the respect of his peers. However, the fame doesn't stop the chart-topping musician from pushing the boundaries even further.

Léger returns with his new release on Guy J's Malta-based label Lost & Found and once again proves the hype about his artistry is real. The two-track material delivers almost eighteen minutes of pure brilliance. The conceptually consistent sound makes the opening and the closing work a piece of the seamless universe.

Nevertheless, Sébastien's double feature explores the hitherto unheard of vocal sample experimentations at the beginning of the release and lands a safe landing at the end. The release is Léger's first appearance on Lost & Found since 2019. It was worth waiting.

Sublime Frequencies is honored to release the third LP from Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band. Sonbonbela was recorded in the beginning of 2022 in the Republic of Burkina Faso. The group continue to hone their trademark fusion of Mandingue and afro-beat styles. The Mandingo Band are a hit machine, sculpting seven new tracks of near Beefheart/Magic Band dynamics, Fela inspired groovers dusted out in the Sahel zone, rather than the humidity and sweat of Lagos, creating one of the most original and propulsive musical statements to come from the contemporary West African cultural juggernaut. As with previous releases, the band features the legendary guitar pyrotechnics of Issouf Diabate, truly one of the greatest West African (or Earth for that matter) guitarists of the last forty years. The band is completed by a near bottomless barrel of artistry from the Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso musical talent pool. On bass guitar, Wendeyida Ouedraogo, on drums Abbas Kabore, and on percussion and balafon, Nickie Dembele. Leading the charge again is the captain himself, Mamadou Sanou on the Doso Ngoni featuring one of the most distinctive voices of the modern era. The opposite of the banal trends of auto-tune that have pervaded most of West African popular music, Baba’s voice still impresses with its gravel and grit, showcasing a range that is ancient and defiant in equal measure. This LP is a non-stop hit parade of afro-beat bangers destined to light dance floors and living rooms ablaze!!! This album is dedicated to the memory of Massimbo Taragna, the bass player extraordinaire who was an integral part of the Mandingo Band’s trance stun musical power. He passed away in early 2022. RIP

Blue Note Records will release the first-ever official release of Donald Byrd Live: Cookin’ with Blue Note at Montreux on what would have been the legendary trumpeter’s 90th birthday: December 9, 2022. The LP of the dynamic 1973 live set is all-analog cut directly from the original analog master tapes.

In July 1973, Blue Note Records headed to Montreux, Switzerland to showcase several of the label’s stars at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Produced by Blue Note President George Butler, live albums all titled Live: Cookin’ with Blue Note at Montreux followed from vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, organist Ronnie Foster, flutist Bobbi Humphrey, and vocalist Marlena Shaw, but one of the performances by trumpeter Donald Byrd remained unreleased in the Blue Note vaults, until now.

Originally released in 2012, the second album by the São Paulo-born composer Rodrigo Campos marks a turning point in both lyrical and aesthetic inspiration. “Bahia Fantástica” is the result of the absorption of a then recent influence of soul music (especially Curtis Mayfield) and is in the middle of this path marked by an unlikely geography in the lyrical part (São Mateus, Bahia, Japan) and by an expansion of sound ( from samba to the indefinable, with a passage through black American music).

The album turns ten years old in 2022 and exudes vitality. The soul reference takes on a different aroma when it passes through the filter of the composer and his band – formed by Kiko Dinucci on guitar, Marcelo Cabral on bass, Maurício Fleury on keyboards, Maurício Takara on drums and Thiago França on sax: it has Brazilian sauce, hints of afrobeat and a very particular seasoning. The lyrics bear the artist's mark: they project scenes in the listener's imagination and design the characters and environments with their own style of subjective chronicle. Bahia is both imaginary and intimate in Rodrigo Campos’s music.

The Wrocław band Ślina returns with their third studio album, this time recorded with Mikołaj Trzaska.

This is not the album of Trzaska + Ślina or Ślina + Trzaska. This is Ślina Trzaska (a kind of wordplay in polish, means: The saliva cracks). A kind of full, new band that was created in the outstanding Sudeten studio Monochrom and is sometimes continued live.

Free improvisations and Krautrock motility are still the hallmark of Ślina, but the organic, radical sound of Mikołaj Trzaska's saxophone and clarinet gives this music a completely new character. From silence and delicacy of ambient to hurricane and violence, full of nuances, interfering motifs associated with Jewish music, it sounds as if the musicians already knew each other from the sandbox, even if they lived in other cities.

There are 4 tracks on the album, traditionally titled as their lengths.

This vinyl version is a 20-inch (!) Hybrid: a 180-gram black 12-inch, traditionally pressed, and an equally black 8-inch cut by Uncle Gusstaff in Studio im. Witolda Gombrowicza in Zielona Góra.

Brilliantly unclassifiable ambient midi-jazz salvo from Brazil’s Gabriel Guerra aka Guerrinha - member of PAN/Future Times' Lifted ensemble and lynchpin of the Rio De Janeiro underground. Very highly recommended noir sleaze x fantasy lounge music somewhere on the spectrum between Gigi Masin, Spencer Clark, 0PN, Flanger and Koji Kondo’s iconic video game soundtracks.

Deployed as the third release on the expertly curated confuso editions, ‘Cidade Grande’ sees Guerra unfurl an immersive and deeply enveloping variant of lounge jazz noir intersecting Japanese city pop, classic video game soundtracks and future-primitive kosmische signatures in a way that defies easy categorisation. Guerrinha colours outside the lines in swirling, exquisitely trippy designs that are as easy on the ears are they are hard to fully fathom over a single sitting.

Mirroring a strain of jazz music’s evolution from sophisticate lounge soundtrack to more psychedelic lustre when musicians found acid and Brazilian styles in the ‘60s, Guerrinha slants the paradigm thru the prism of late ‘80s midi with a c.21st suss that coolly echoes hauntological takes from Spencer Clark & James Ferraro to Leyland Kirby, and Eli Keszler’s electro-acoustic jazz proprioceptions, as much as emotive Kenji Kawai soundtracks. There's a complete lack of cynicism in his approach, and dense, hypnotic tracks like 'Venda Casada Village' and the moving 'Kafta Hoje' sound so completely straight-faced it's impossible not to respect the flex.

It’s a hugely trippy listen, at once calming and eerily evocative, with a wipe-clean palette of deft midi orchestrations that conjure flashbacks to soundtracks for everything from Twin Peaks to Sharky & George or Patlabor, but with more opalescent depth, dancing around motifs in holographic designs that mark the uncanny valley of perception.

Truly one of the oddest, most beguiling records we've heard in months, no doubt.

Cheick Tidiane Seck placed his hands on a keyboard for the first time in the late 60s, on a harmonium of the Catholic convent in Sikasso, where he was a boarding pupil preparing his junior high diploma. From the age of 12 onwards, he would compose pieces by singing them to his mother, a,famous singer. Realizing he had talent, one of the nuns instructed him in music theory during his 3 years at school there. Diploma in hand, he that studied fine art at the Bamako National Arts Institute, tinkled the keys at night, playing with the Rail Band at the Buffet de la Gare hotel, moonlighting like his idol, Jimmy Smith,. He also made the most of his free time by playing on the Art Institute’s piano when the music students had gone home. He was swiftly adopted by the musical community of the Malian capital, and set off on Africa-wide tours with Les Ambassadeurs. He set up shop in Abidjan before arriving in France in the mid-80s. Since then, he has multiplied collaborations with jazz artists (Randy Weston, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ornette Coleman ...), African musicians (Manu Dibango, Salif Keita...) and even pop singers (Daman Albarn, Carlos Santana...) After the international success of Sarala, a record he arranged and co-directed with Hank Jones, Cheick released 5 albums under his own name which saved a lot of room for the science of electric keyboards, from the Hammond to the Moog. Kelena Fôly (‘expressing oneself only in music’ in Bamana) is his first solo record in a career spanning almost fifty years. There is no artifice here, just his deep voice and the Steinway grand piano of the Studio Pigalle. Cheick plays pieces anchored in the Mandinka tradition like Kana Kassi, which recounts an episode in the life of the founder of the Wassoulou empire, Samory Touré. Kelena Fôly plays out around a poignant tribute to Aimé Césaire. On the track, Cheick Tidiane Seck narrates an extract from the poem Souffles, penned by another great proponent of négritude, Birago Diop. Here, he remembers an invitation from the Martiniquais poet to play in Fort de France, to celebrate the 120 th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The only cover on the record is his version of Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child to which he has added a verse in bamana dedicated to his own mother. The album ends with a piece improvised in just one take. Corona contains a Message of Love for humanity by a musician who survived Covid 19. Hospitalised in Bamako in December 2020 and placed on a respirator, Cheick felt himself leave this world before coming gradually back to life. Today, back on track, this ‘warrior’ has embarked on new cross-continental musical endeavours with this record where he has summoned jazz, blues, Mandinka folk sounds and sources of African music to come together, unified by his exceptional playing style and a voice gorged on soul.

Dwarfs Of East Agouza are a leading force of improvised musical excitement and stand apart from wider parts of an lame ass underground of the 20ies. Founded in Cairo circa 2015 by Alan Bishop (ex-Sun City Girls) with Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush, Karkhana) and Maurice Louca (Karkhana) the trio developed an unique always recognizable sound, but with many faces to show. Xaybu: The Unseen is the sophomore release from Sélébéyone, the international avant-rap collective led by saxophonist and composer Steve Lehman, who has been hailed by The New York Times for his "sure-footed futurism" in the realms of modern jazz and contemporary classical music. Comprised of MCs HPrizm and Gaston Bandimic, saxophonists Lehman and Maciek Lasserre, and drummer Damion Reid, their eponymous 2016 debut was hailed as a game-changing synthesis of underground hip-hop, modern jazz and live electronic music that was described by Pitchfork as "legitimately new" and a "revelation."
