Albina Music Trust has served as a vital resource amplifying Portland’s musical past - most consistently through work with underrepresented soul musicians active in the 1950s-1990s. Another important element of the nonprofit’s work has been strengthening connections between these foundational artists and our current generation of regional musicians, especially those mentored by elders in the Albina musician community.

One such artist is drummer, composer, and educator Domo Branch. At twenty-three years old, Branch has come up through the ranks of the American Music Program - a crucial proving ground for Portland’s jazz musicians that includes Esperanza Spaulding and Charlie Brown III. Founded by Gangsters alum, Thara Memory, Branch received vital instruction through community-centered operations such as AMP and the Mel Brown Jazz Workshop. He now lives in Manhattan and performs with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. He has since formed a bi-coastal group, Branchin’ Out.

The Melodies of a Branch is a solo drum recording made in Riga, Latvia. This rare session followed Branch’s 2022 performance at the city’s annual jazz festival. Performing in an intimate setting at Latvian Radio Recording Studios, Branch’s range of motion is now on full display in this exploration of the many nuances of a drum set.

The record also keys into the emotional value of the Black experience through music. Whether it be the evolution of drumming ranging from tribal to contemporary forms or the sheer capacity of melodic phrasing on the drums, the album is expressive, free, and spiritually sound. Through its spare, minimalist genesis into the polyrhythmic power and beauty of its conclusion, the work evidenced here is consistent with the many iterations of Branch’s work with other ensembles. Except now we get him to ourselves.

Darwin Chamber is the alter ego of Mark Greenfield. This legend of the early Rave scene has been making tracks for more than 30 years. Pioneering the West Coast Rave breakbeat and trip-hop sound, he got his start just like many, learning his craft on a cheap keyboard at a friend’s house and then taking his music to the streets. Beagle Kick, a high-res music unit, challenges the ultimate high-res record! A total of 6 tracks carefully selected mainly from fusion music! A gem of a piece was completed, incorporating plenty of live performances by leading studio musicians. The cutting studio is Altphonic Studio, which is capable of PVC (vinyl chloride) master cutting, an extremely rare technique in the world, and after careful sound creation by engineer Atsushi Yamane and repeated listening tests including the unit members, the master was finally re-cut to a lacquer disc master with an advantageous S/N ratio. The label is plain, and the A/B side is indicated as an imprint on the outside of the label.

Though she had been performing professionally since the late 1920s, as a teenager in Harlem, during its Renaissance, the immortal Billie Holiday didn't play a single night on the European continent until 1954. It was in that year that the great journalist and musician Leonard Feather, and a Swedish promoter organized the Jazz Club U.S.A. tour, named after Feather's wildly popular radio program. Featuring Red Norvo, Sonny Clark, and more, the centerpiece of Jazz Club U.S.A. was, undoubtedly, Lady Day. Energetic contemporary jazz and intricate compositions cloaked in pop-like simplicity lead the way in the latest release from Danish pianist Morten Schantz and his trio, out 16th Sept on April Records. ‘Passenger’ - their third studio album - revels in exploring both the familiar and the unexpected, offering a modern jazz extension to the iconic Scandinavian piano trio sound. Rooted in thoughtful songwriting, the album moves seamlessly from comforting harmony of folk and pop music to extended passages of energetic virtuosic improvisation, propulsive syncopated riffs, and attitude-infused bluesy bass-lines. Taken as a whole, Morten’s compositional skill creates a series of songs which can feel more like a mini-suite with their labyrinthine hooks and through-composed sensibility. Continuing in the vein of the ensemble’s critically acclaimed 2014 release Unicorn and Morten’s 2017 release Godspeed (Edition Records), the group’s palette is extended with the inclusion of horns, percussion, and Ondes Martenot. Their 15 years of performing together can be heard through the ease in which they weave through their rich array of influences. The three musicians are highly active on the Danish and worldwide music scenes, each with impressive reputations and accolades under their belts. Drummer Janus Templeton was awarded the Grammy for ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ in 2007, Bassist Morten Ankarfeldt has released over 60 albums across his career, and Morten Schantz himself has been awarded the prestigious Young Nordic Jazz Comets, numerous compositional grants from the Danish Arts Council, and been nominated for two Danish Music Awards.

“Easy rider, come and take me higher”. When the world seemingly crumbles around, music can provide an escape few other mediums can. For their debut self-titled LP, Velour effortlessly levitate you above the madness below, each track taking a new turn, cruising over hazy flecked skylines, bustling walkways and bleary eyed bedlam. A trajectory that takes in all of jazz’s vibrancies, blending elements of neo soul, broken beat and hip hop coupled with a much-needed sense of hope across nine deep, soul-searching tracks released via Wolf Music Recordings. A style and sound taking influence from genres and moods, environments and experiences, Essen-based Velour stretch their legs for this, their first full length album. From the off, they nestle you under their wing with the rustling sax washes of opener ‘clp’ before diving into an epic slo-mo burner, swooping down into the chaos as singer, Eva Czaya, wistfully narrates the scenes beneath. Unafraid to shift pace within songs, the likes of ‘Pose’, sauntering from soulful summer groove into woozy late night affair, and ‘Tom's Garage’, that progresses from roadside recounting to grungy basement blowout, finished with a sample of jazz-tinged dusty beats, show that accomplished and adept heads rest on the shoulders of these relative newcomers. Wolf Music mainstay Mr Fries continues to head up production for Velour, his trademark touch capturing the intimacy of Velour’s sound presenting it in a way that’s considered yet raw - nothing feeling rushed, nor cluttered. A separation and space that gives each element the room it deserves to breathe, with short interludes and skits providing the perfect bridge between tracks, guiding you through smokey jazz bars and twilight whisperings. Moving through the album, Czaya at points wanders in a serene spoken dialogue, at others letting her voice loose, but always with an ethereal demeanour that comes off with natural ease. One of many highlights, ‘Anthony Davis’ shows off this celestial prowess whilst perfectly embodying Velour’s dream-like escapism. A pent up release of creativity, as moody bass tones mix with deft keys, rolling snares sit behind swirling saxophones. The journey ends with ‘Luminate’, a transcendent closer laced with space-echoed vocals that reverberate around over-driven Rhodes and feverish drums. Cymbals crash, as modulated synths rise, building and building before easing you off into the night and on your way to a parallel universe. As a body of work, ‘Velour’ is a shining example of the freedom, energy and enthusiasm of the new school of jazz that’s been captivating minds the world over. An instant on repeat staple - let go, feel the flow, it’s what we need in a time like this.

Also producing left field house and techno under the name Borrowed cs, Clear Path Ensemble is Cory’s first offering to the jazz gods. Having spent many years playing drums alongside some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians in the revered Wellington jam session scene this release is an amalgamation of the energy & spirit that the Wellington scene encompasses. Walking over the blurred lines of psychedelia and spiritual jazz and taking cues from planetary rhythms and celestial oddities, CPE invokes a higher sense of self through the transformative power of sound. Millions Brazilians formed in Portland, Oregon in 2006. Founding members Grant Corum and Suzanne Stone have been central to the band since it’s inception, while a rotating line-up backs them depending on the latest vision for the sound. TIP!

The band carry out their own interpretation of a genre bending ethos that has evolved throughout the American underground. Drifting between boundless compositions, focused energetic improvisations and experimental collaborations that embrace a weird sort of transcendence.

Their next installment Red Rose and Obsidian was recorded in Maine and engineered by Big Blood’s Caleb Mulkerin. Both he and the band deliver a powerful yet fragile and personal release. The mythical and evocative recordings are inspired by Maine's rugged coastlines; mournful ripples of sound wash up on the shore, whilst a lonesome, at times harrowing saxophone drifts through the rolling mountains, providing unsettling melodic interludes. Electronic treatments veil organic sounds, a fleeting whistle meets spontaneously with spacey flutes, mutated rock rhythms are topped off with the soaring vocals of Suzanne Stone who leads the listeners into the magical world of the Million Brazilians.

Recorded in Florence in May 1991, the concert is part of the tour between "Senza di Lei" in 1990 and "Zighidà", which will be released in 1992 after Sanremo festival. Three days after the concert the group will enter the recording studio (the Westlink in Pisa) to record the single for EMI "Qui non c'è il mare / Noi duri" with the production of Gianni Maroccolo. Classic lineup with Oskar on vocals, Naska on drums, Alex Loggia on guitar, Rudy Ruzza on bass and Senior on keyboards with in addition a wind section made up of trumpet, saxophone and trombone. 300 hand-numbered copies on white vinyl.
