"A follow-up to his first album “Les Âmes perdues”, Christophe Panzani—one of France’s most on demand saxophonists (heard with drummer Anne Paceo, the bands Hocus Pocus, Thiefs, The Drops…)— continues his musical quest in exploring the possibilities of combining the sound of his tenor saxophone to the piano. Bernice is the experimental pop vessel of musician/songwriter Robin Dann and her longtime collaborators Thom Gill (keyboards, guitar), Philippe Melanson (e-percussion and drums), Daniel Fortin (bass) and Felicity Williams (voice). Together and apart, they have performed with Martha Wainwright, Andy Shauf, Lido Pimienta, Bahamas, Knower, and Beverly Glenn Copeland among many others, which led to them being referred to in the press as “Toronto’s ever-evolving backing band.”

In their own right, however, they have repeatedly proved to be far more than the sum of their considerable parts. Bernice’s Polaris Prize-nominated 2018 LP 'Puff: In The Air Without A Shape' received major international attention, described as an “analytical, self-dissecting monument to ephemerality” by The New York Times, and “a fascinating musical conversation” that blends pop and R&B influences with C86 aesthetics by Pitchfork, alongside high praise from outlets like NPR, Fader, and Stereogum, and many more.

Nearly three years on from that release (for Bernice a rapid turnaround by comparison to the seven-year gap between their 2011 debut and Puff), the band return with their third full-length, Eau de Bonjourno, out March 5th from Telephone Explosion and figureeight records. It marks their first collaboration with producer Shahzad Ismaily, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who has worked with artists as varied as Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, John Zorn, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. While their genre reconstruction remains distinctly Bernice, Dann’s lyrics bring a newfound focus to storytelling in the present moment, compassionately meeting ourselves where we are, and finding joy in spaces that are familiar but ever changing.

Eau de Bonjourno, according to Dann, “openly plays with the shape of a pop song,” drawing on the band members’ backgrounds in jazz, subverting rhythmic formulas, and resting in grooves that sit just outside of predictable. Instead of letting instruments take extended solos, the tone is set on opener “Groove Elation” with brief blurts of synthesized sax, patient passages of space, or clusters of beats, tenderly held together by Dann and Williams’ intimate vocals. The album’s sound is experimental in its truest definition, chopped up like musique concrete and then delicately placed back together with the loving touch of a scrapbook collagist.

The album Nobody's Husband, Nobody's Dad is the first entirely solo work of UK-based percussionist Maurizio Ravalico, and it represents a nodal episode in his artistic development. The music on the album is entirely acoustic and live played, with no overdubs added to the initial takes. These have all been slightly edited to different degrees, mainly to fit them into the time limitations of vinyl; but other than that all tracks are faithful reproductions of single, acoustic, uninterrupted one-man performances.
Another distinctive musical trait of the album is a presistent denial of metric recurrence. Maurizio's solo music is focusing on sounds, often generated by unexpected combinations of conventional instruments and found objects, both played using a mix of orthodox and extended techniques, and often on top of a big drum, which augments dramatically their timbrical and tonal range. The finished pieces recall thus the aesthetics of both contemporary and improvised music, despite them being neither strictly composed nor at all improvised.

Companion to the album is A Momentary Convergence of Differently Paced Trajectories, a 12" EP containing remixes of one of Maurizio's album tracks, Fiium Shaarrk and Collocutor.

Maurizio Ravalico

Italian-born visionary cross-genres percussionist Maurizio Ravalico has been one notably eclectic presence in the London music scene since his arrival in the UK, in 1991.
Regularily seen on stage and on releases with the like of Jamiroquai and the James Taylor Quartet throughout the nineties, as well as with virtually every salsa and Cuban-oriented projects to originate from London in the same period, he has subsequently collaborated on many of the projects of the experimental music label Not applicable (Icarus, Isambard Khroustaliov, Alex Bonney, Tom Arthurs) since 2005, and is now an established name in both the London and Berlin improv and experimental scene, having played with John Edwards, Oren Marshall, Steve Beresford, Pat Thomas, Frank Paul Schubert and many others.
Maurizio Ravalico's peculiar approach to percussion is one of the distinctive traits of Tamar Osborn's modal jazz 5-piece band Collocutor (On the Corner records) and of the pan-European trio Fiium Shaarrk (on Bbc3 Late Junction's 12 Best Albums of 2017). Maurizio Ravalico also collaborates with the string quartet Phaedra Ensemble, the composer Fred Thomas and the French contemporary dance company Silenda.

"From A Love Supreme to The Sex Machine!" The personal musical mantra of the late Philadelphia reedman Byard Lancaster informed an open-minded and varied lifetime in jazz. Strut presents one of Lancaster's lesser known classics, 'My Pure Joy', recorded in 1992 for Black Fire. Lancaster had initially cut his musical teeth with the avant-garde on New York's Lower East Side in the 1960s (famously on sessions with pianist Dave Burrell and drummer Sunny Murray) and in Paris during the '70s after an appearance at the Actuel festival but, throughout his career, his path was built around community engagement, positivity and "the Philly jazz sound, Germantown style." He became an ambassador for the music of the City Of Brotherly Love, starting his own Dogtown label, helping launch the Philly Jazz imprint and campaigning tirelessly to improve the circumstances of the city's street musicians. Originally delayed by three years because of cashflow issues within Black Fire, 'My Pure Joy' eventually surfaced as one of the label's final CD releases in 1995.

February of 2021 marked an eventful month for visionary Western Massachusetts electro-acoustic percussionist Jake Meginsky: the birth of his daughter Luce, the death of his friend and mentor (and the subject of his celebrated 2018 documentary, Full Mantis) Milford Graves, and the creation of Trinities. A four-piece suite heavily inspired by Graves’ notion of the primacy of threes as “a fundamental pattern in the universe - and the lowest, strongest and most generative structure in rhythm” the album showcases Meginsky’s adventurous vein of pointillist minimalism: stark, oblique, cerebral, fluid. It’s free music in both form and function, liberated from rhythm, pattern, or expectation. Abrupt flurries of metallic reverberations ping and echo against charged silences like avant-garde morse code. Textures clang and hang in low-lit air. Presence and absence commingling in elusive ballets of resonance and negative space.

Among the many influential teachings of free jazz icon Milford Graves was the idea of three-ness as “the underlying structure… the grounded being of all music.” It’s a concept both dialectical and divine – the sacred geometry of an idea, its opposite, and the synthesis that binds the two. For Trinities, Meginsky developed modular synth patches that allowed him to explore triplet structures in an intuitive way, “the threes as a structural principal, the building blocks, felt rather than heard”. During sleep deprived sessions with his newborn infant listening, he channeled the grief of Graves’ passing in early morning improvisations alternately quiet and questing, inquisitive and defiant.

The outlier is “2521,” a celestial lullaby of suspended frequencies composed on a 4-track in the birthing room of the hospital during a particularly strict phase of quarantine lockdown (no coming or going, or visitors, for a week straight). Meginsky played the piece for his daughter “as she came into this world, and while she slept.” Its harmonic tranquility ebbs and radiates in soft arcs like a soft dawn glowing on the horizon – welcoming those newly here, and waving warmly to those in the hereafter

Formed by Jesse Sharps, an alumnus (and former bandleader) of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra (papa), The Gathering: Roots and Branches of Los Angeles Jazz is a project spanning generations, but firmly planted in the jazz scene of Los Angeles. The group, formed in 2005, has a rotating cast of musicians, ranging from up and coming (at the time…) stars of the jazz scene such as Kamasi Washington, all the way to Tribe co-founder Phil Ranelin.

Recorded live in 2015 at Los Angeles’ Mamye Clayton Library and Museum, Healing Suite was recorded to commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Gathering’s formation, and features many of the original members. The album opens with a stirring rendition of the Nina Simone classic “Strange Fruit”, performed as a duet by Dwight Trible (vo.) and Theo Saunders (pf.). Trible’s voice is haunting, his voice goes from somber melody to tortured cries, perfectly expressing the pain and weight behind the lyrics. Saunder’s piano comping seems to undulate under Drible’s vocals, with angular chords and percussive playing peeking out from underneath Trible’s singing.

The heart of the album is undoubtedly Freedom’s Sweet, a three-part suite composed by Horace Tapscott. With Jesse Sharps conducting, the song moves forward at a steady shuffle, going from disarming poetry by Kamau Daáod (part 1), to triumphant horn lines and fiery solos (part 2), all the way to avant-garde big band swing (part 3). A particular high point is Tribe co-founder Phil Ranelin’s (tbn.) solo in part 2, which is as energetic and fiery as any of his solos on earlier Tribe records, despite being almost 80 at the time of recording. Over half an hour long, Freedom’s Sweet is a master class in long-form composition, with each member of The Gathering getting space to shine, while also highlighting how the group can meld together to form a band quite unlike anything else. Recorded in 2015 and originally released in 2022, P-vine is proud to be giving Healing Suite a well deserved analog release with an obi-strip. As much as the album highlights Los Angeles’ progressive jazz scene, this album crosses all boundaries, whether they be age, location, or even genre.

Cheick Tidiane Seck placed his hands on a keyboard for the first time in the late 60s, on a harmonium of the Catholic convent in Sikasso, where he was a boarding pupil preparing his junior high diploma. From the age of 12 onwards, he would compose pieces by singing them to his mother, a,famous singer. Realizing he had talent, one of the nuns instructed him in music theory during his 3 years at school there. Diploma in hand, he that studied fine art at the Bamako National Arts Institute, tinkled the keys at night, playing with the Rail Band at the Buffet de la Gare hotel, moonlighting like his idol, Jimmy Smith,. He also made the most of his free time by playing on the Art Institute’s piano when the music students had gone home. He was swiftly adopted by the musical community of the Malian capital, and set off on Africa-wide tours with Les Ambassadeurs. He set up shop in Abidjan before arriving in France in the mid-80s. Since then, he has multiplied collaborations with jazz artists (Randy Weston, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ornette Coleman ...), African musicians (Manu Dibango, Salif Keita...) and even pop singers (Daman Albarn, Carlos Santana...) After the international success of Sarala, a record he arranged and co-directed with Hank Jones, Cheick released 5 albums under his own name which saved a lot of room for the science of electric keyboards, from the Hammond to the Moog. Kelena Fôly (‘expressing oneself only in music’ in Bamana) is his first solo record in a career spanning almost fifty years. There is no artifice here, just his deep voice and the Steinway grand piano of the Studio Pigalle. Cheick plays pieces anchored in the Mandinka tradition like Kana Kassi, which recounts an episode in the life of the founder of the Wassoulou empire, Samory Touré. He also takes us on American adventures with 56 Walker Street, a theme written at this Manhattan address, where, in the early 2000s, he held legendary jam-sessions with attendees such as Dr Lonnie Smith, Roy Hargrove and Vernon Reid. Kelena Fôly plays out around a poignant tribute to Aimé Césaire. On the track, Cheick Tidiane Seck narrates an extract from the poem Souffles, penned by another great proponent of négritude, Birago Diop. Here, he remembers an invitation from the Martiniquais poet to play in Fort de France, to celebrate the 120 th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The only cover on the record is his version of Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child to which he has added a verse in bamana dedicated to his own mother. The album ends with a piece improvised in just one take. Corona contains a Message of Love for humanity by a musician who survived Covid 19. Hospitalised in Bamako in December 2020 and placed on a respirator, Cheick felt himself leave this world before coming gradually back to life. Today, back on track, this ‘warrior’ has embarked on new cross-continental musical endeavours with this record where he has summoned jazz, blues, Mandinka folk sounds and sources of African music to come together, unified by his exceptional playing style and a voice gorged on soul.

A year after Alain Eskinasi released his solo album Many Worlds, One Tribe, he rejoined William Aura and Craig Dobbin to write and produce Vital Force, 3rd Force’s third studio album in 1997. In terms of the group’s previous two albums, 3rd Force branches out to produce a new, energetic sound on this release. Eskinasi brings his recent experience with tribal influences to the album and this is apparent in many tracks. This, combined with the many years of groove and soundscape production experience from Aura and Dobbin, lifts 3rd Force to new heights and leaves listeners wanting more. Urpa i musell is pleased to present our sixth record. We have joined paths with pianist Agustí Fernández on a
double disc that includes both the reissue of the LP Suite Nofres (originally released in 1987) and
Interseccions. Música i arts escèniques (1985-1990) (meaning Intersections. Music and performing arts (1985-
1990)), a set of previously unreleased works that Agustí recorded during this period at various performances.
Agustí Fernández (Palma, 1954) is a seminal figure in the improvised music scene. Few musicians in Spain
enjoy such international fame and respect. Peter Kowald, Derek Bailey, Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris, Evan
Parker, Barry Guy, Mats Gustafsson, Joel Ryan, Joe Morris, Nate Wooley and Peter Evans are some of the
musicians Fernández has been able to converse with artistically. He has shaped his creativity by leading free

music formations, composing for the world of cinema, television and theatre, directing musical events in our
country and abroad in addition to his work in the field of teaching (until very recently he was professor of
improvisation at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya). We could define his musical identity as the result
of the interaction between the tradition of classical piano and the improvisation of jazz roots, which has led to
new sonic places, the sum of language and intuition.
Fernández settled in Barcelona at a very young age. From the very beginning he received very diverse
commissions and one of them was to play in the dance classes of the Institut del Teatre. There he met many
young dancers. In 1986 he debuted in the recording world with Ardent, a set of piano pieces that includes a
piece composed for the dancer Margarita Guergué. Shortly after, he took charge of the music for a
contemporary ballet by Ramon Oller, another of the dance students he had met at the Institut del Teatre. Suite
Nofres, released in 1987, is the recording of the music that Agustí played live in the show.
Three years later, "El mar" was recorded, a video-dance work that he and the dancer Àngels Margarit
produced for Glasnost, the fringe TVE-2 program directed by Lulu Martorell. This short piece was reinterpreted
as Les nenes no en tenen mai prou, a theatrical show for piano and five voices, one of them Lulu herself.
The second album of this release, Interseccions. Música i arts escèniques (1985-1990), includes these
pieces, as well as unpublished extra material from Suite Nofres.
Agustí then combined work with training. In those years, he immersed himself fully in the musical avant-garde
of the moment: he discovered the music of Cecil Taylor and took courses with Xenakis and Stockhausen. He
also encountered some artists returning to Catalonia from the United States, such as the dancers Lydia
Azzopardi and Cesc Gelabert and the musician Carles Santos, all of them influenced by the American
minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Agustí Fernández collaborated with Carles Santos closely for
many years after 1982.
Santos' approach to minimalism was particular, passionate (as Tom Johnson explains in "Passionate
minimalism") and heterodox. The limitations of minimalistic explorations —repetition of short musical
patterns and phrases, persistent drones and harmony tending to be static— were understood above all as a
starting point from which to express himself with complete freedom. Fernández received this influence and
adopted Santos' attitude both in Suite Nofres and in the works included in Interseccions. Minimalism here
acts as a structural support. It serves as a framework from which to explore a variety of interesting topics,
including research on the piano and brief bursts of free improvisation, meticulous work with timbre, phrasing,
and form, where we discover, among other things, structures used in various locations and instrumentations,
and interaction with the environment, including other musicians, singers, dancers and audiences.
The sonority of these pieces is rich and mature. Agustí, in fact, recorded Ardent with twenty years of musical
experience already behind him, but at the same time it is also a learning record. As he explained in an interview
with José Francisco Tapiz: "From ‘85 to ‘95 I was working on my own, trying to develop a language and have
the tools to improvise. Privately, above all." If we look at his discography, Suite Nofres marks a point in time,
after which he released very sparsely until 1996. After using the minimalist approach, he had to abandon it. The
yearning for completely free music meant intense personal work without too many sound testimonies
(Interseccions is one of them). The result of this intense search is the sensational Tempranillo (1996), an
album by duet with Evan Parker and which constitutes a declaration of intentions. Here we could say that the
mature and most intense stage of Agustí begins –an essential part, but not one that we will relate here.
The two albums that make up the sixth release from Urpa i musell bear witness to the decisive period of
impasse in the artistic growth of one of the most stimulating musicians that has emerged from our country. At
the same time, it perfectly captures where experimental music was then. It is lovely to be able to hear the
wonderful ideas that came from the head and hands of Agustí Fernández that represented the first flowering of
his unmistakable character.

After the release of their critically acclaimed first album « Bluestaeb & S. Co-founded by Holy Fuck’s Brian Borcherdt, the quartet is comprised of a diverse and accomplished collection of musicians who came together when he moved back to his home province in 2019 after a lengthy stay in Toronto.

The shock of settling into a town of 600 people was softened almost immediately by a care package left on Borcherdt’s front porch. It included the curious juxtaposition of homemade preserves and a circuit-bent keyboard. His interest was piqued. As luck would have it, his new neighbour happened to be renowned folk guitarist Kim Barlow.

“Kim was in the process of organizing an improvisation series featuring over a dozen Nova Scotia-based musicians. The series struggled under lockdown restrictions, and on the second attempt only the four of us showed up.” Borcherdt recalls. “We didn't really know each other that well, were a bit shy and played very quietly. However, we really enjoyed how spacious our jam was.”

One week after their initial jam, Borcherdt was invited to perform a solo set at a Halifax-based experimental festival called Open Waters. He instead volunteered the same lineup: himself, Barlow, distinguished Isle Of Skye harpist (and Berklee professor) Mairi Chaimbeul, and Sahara Nasr, a noted songwriter and player of the rare Indian Sarangi. It wasn’t long before they began recording and soon realized a name was necessary to make the project official.

“When we get together to play music, it's our 'poker night'. That led us to think of other community or 'grown-up' gatherings, similar or antiquated... like barnraising bees, quilting bees.” Explains Borcherdt. “We were sort of quilting: four corners of fabric, texture, sewing threads, telling a story, all making one complete piece while drinking a few beers. We could've also called it ‘Therapy’.”

While providing a necessary distraction from early-COVID life, Quilting also offered a chance to improvise within a uniquely ambient soundspace. This was a welcome change for some of the members, including Borcherdt, who was used to creating music with decidedly more volume.

“Space is welcome. Writing in Quilting is a spontaneous and thoughtful process, very synesthetic and, of course, collaborative. I've only really gotten to explore space and silence with solo music.” He reflects. “With my other bands, even when spontaneous and improvised, the result is dense and cathartic, expressive through pulse and rhythm and volume. With Quilting we get to drift, no beats, no safety net. Every note counts. Yet rather than being stressed or scrutinized under a microscope we all have fun and daydream a bit.”

Sonics aside, Quilting has also given all four members the chance to experiment with the boundaries created by headquartering in a remote area not commonly associated with the avant-garde music community.

“Nova Scotia, unlike other provinces, has basically one city, one place where musicians congregate, play shows and hang out. Anything happening outside of Halifax can be considered an experiment, a test to see anything can get off the ground.” Borcherdt explains. “ In Toronto there's already an infrastructure, whether you play the same venues or build your own new thing- there's an audience, there are friends and like-minded individuals. It's healthier. Here we have to take what we get. But the good news is that it's kind of a blank slate.”

The LP, which features hand-calligraphed cover art from Upstate New York-based artist and musician Sarah Le Puerta, features five songs all recorded live off-the-floor in a single live performance. Moods range from reflective to unsettled, and even at its loudest parts a sense of intimacy persists.

“This album feels like a complete picture, a snapshot of one fun night.” He states. “That seems to me to be a perfect introduction. The listener gets to “attend” the concert, which is an amazing way to discover new music.”

“There is a German satellite falling to earth!” a woman’s voice urgently announces. “She says, what if it hits me? Welcome to anxiety group.” A dense cloud on the horizon heralds a fresh onslaught from that infamous swarm of free jazz killer bees, a new project from self-described “conceptual kleptomaniac post digital free jazz outfit” Drone Operatør. Riding hard along the line between experimental electronics, blockbuster sound design and the loosest jazz improvisation, this rogue’s gallery of players, headed up by art world provocateurs Paul Barsch and Tilman Horning, take the fevered pulse of the relentlessly flattened now and note down four key observations which presented together make up Welcøme TO Anxiety Group. Coaxing lively theatricality from a continually provoked altercation between acoustic instrumentation and synthetic sound, each of the project’s four tracks provides a new perspective on what it means to improvise through technological mediation. “Here we are now,” write Drone Operatør. “22 after 2k. mp4 flex to 32bit float. The sax - the heart. The quadcopter - the brain. Duo d'Allemagne not wasting a life time learning jazz standards.” To open proceedings, our faithful operatør whips up exquisite dissonance with ‘Bot Møther’, smashing together squalls of saxophone and ripples of percussion with the sounds of sci-fi artillery, like an amphetamine-fuelled, midnight jam hammered out oblivious to an ongoing alien invasion. Slowing to a furtive creep for ‘German Satellite’, picking out keenly felt anxiety in suggestive plucks, stuttering clacks and strained wails, their cosmic warning signalling a neurotic climax before settling back into a post-coital skitter, flourishes of keys, both digital and analogue, harmonising with Drone Operatør’s weary welcome to the group. Eschewing the electronic completely for the cacophonous gallop of ‘Røhrstøck’, we’re invited to hold on for dear life during a mad scramble towards the ‘The Vessel,’ a staggering sequence of tumbling synthetic chimes, embellished with peals of ornate sax that flare up and out to illuminate the track’s irregularity, alternately submerged and retrieved through a subtle manipulation of filters. It’s a session that has to be heard to be believed, crammed with as much difficulty and as much revelation as any good therapy should. As Drone Operatør describe: “From iconic spamming to intellectual nonsense. Always never predictable, never not cheesy. Battery life cycles full of joy. You say you like free jazz. Sun In the East about Following on from his recent string of exceptional all-solo albums, Mysticism of Sound, Ancient Africa and Afro Trane, Nat Birchall releases his first new studio recording, Spiritual Progressions, with his current working group, Unity Ensemble. This group consists of long time musical partner Adam Fairhall on piano, plus the bassist in Nat’s group for several years and albums, Michael Bardon, and a welcome return on drums by Paul Hession who recorded on the legendary Live In Larissa double album. Rounding out the five-piece ensemble is percussionist Lascelle Gordon, a mainstay of the London music scene for many years. Nat says he chose the name for the group because “This particular group of musicians has a very unified sound, each player has a very individual sound and concept but they all come together in this group and blend incredibly well. Making music with this band is pure joy.” The album features four tracks, all composed by Nat, which beautifully illustrate Nat’s comments. The first track, Unity, speaks for itself and the cohesion of the group sound, each instrument adding to the overall vibe with no hint of grandstanding or musical one-upmanship. Lokumbe is named for the legendary trumpeter and composer/bandleader, Hannibal Lokumbe, formerly known as Marvin Peterson, who is one of Nat’s musical heroes, keeping the flame of soulful, spiritual and far-reaching music alive for many decades and still going strong. Nile Valley is so titled because, as Nat explains “This song made me think of an ancient Egyptian Royal barge moving along the river Nile, in a slow and stately fashion.” The unhurried pace of the song and genuinely colourful sounds from all the instruments really bring this image to life in the mind of the listener.

The final track, Sun in the East, is about “new beginnings, figuratively speaking, like the sunrise in the East every morning, each day bringing a fresh opportunity to renew our resolve to progress in different ways, or even to start again from scratch. It’s never too late to make a change or to begin a journey.”

The album was recorded live in the studio in Manchester, then Nat overdubbed some percussion and other instruments, mbira, balaphon, wood flutes etc, to add some extra textures to the musical canvas. As Nat says “Music and painting have many things in common, and I tend to think in terms of musical colours and textures when composing or arranging songs. As with a painting, balance is very important when making music, and this group is the most beautifully balanced group I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

Three songs taken from Chip Wickham's spiritual jazz album Blue to Red get reshaped by Photay, Medlar, and Chip Wickham himself. The result is a lush ep, every bit as good as the combination of a wonderful original track and an uber-talented remixer could be.

Photay has deconstructed the peaceful Blue to Red to turn it into a bomb—a storming dance track that keeps the spiritual vibe intact. The extra beatless version soothes your ear while creating a certain sense of anticipation.

Somewhere in the middle of the first track, “Torres e Baldios”, there’s a sudden change of pace with percussion rhythms interfering with the trance-like sound of the first six minutes. It sounds like steps, people running away on a corridor bashing their feet. It dazzles you because of how unexpected it is, how unpredictable those sounds sound like and, most of all, how it makes perfect sense. It is a monstrous piece. And the beginning of a new age for Ondness, in the same year he defied his Serpente moniker to create an absolute classic, “Dias da Aranha”.

What makes “Oeste A.D.” so remarkable is the intangible idea of nostalgia. “Aqua Matrix Alternative Nation” recreates with a slowed down mentality the theme of one of the main events of the Expo 98 in Lisbon. It’s nowhere similar to the original, what it does is to mess around with the global ideas that were such a big part of that event. The Portuguese musicians that were invited to collaborate with Expo 98 were mesmerized by the ideas of union and globalization, creating overpriced music that sounds like shit today. “Aqua Matrix Alternative Nation” messes around with that vibe in a positive way. Think Mark Leckey playing around with his rave memories. Same thing, but in Portugal we had Expo 98.

Jokes aside, B Side is more futuristic with “Torres e Baldios II” and “Endless Domingo”, a nod to “Endless Summer”, by Fennesz, and “Endless Happiness” (from “Beaches And Canyons”), by Black Dice, mashing up – freely - both covers and reminding of how great 2001/2002 was for experimental music. Both tracks are full of sci-fi drama and this sickness of the future that has been travelling with Ondness since its early days. But the approach here is somehow different. Before “Oeste A.D.” the Ondness sound was fragmented, sparse and intensively reflexive. There was this uncertainty to it that made the previously releases so good. But “Oeste A.D.” is full of clarity, the phrases are straightforward, and the music moves in one direction, continuously. Before, there were loads of unanswered questions. The only doubt is when will the world start to care and listen to Bruno’s brilliant music. Now sounds like a good time.

The Uproar in Bursts of Sound and Silence is a sort of emergent collage that came together over four years of composition, improvisation and production. The foundations for this album were initially recorded in 2018 by producer/engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Skinyard) at Soundhouse in Seattle, WA with myself (Evan Strauss, electric bass and upright bass), 5-Track (Guitar) and Sheridan Riley (Drums). The initial foundations of this music consisted of my long-form graphically notated conceptual compositions based on the calls of the Veery songbird (Catharus fuscescens), the astrological transits at the precise time of the recording session and some thematic elements from Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel The Dispossessed. In 2019 the album was given the working title Bird Songs for the Stars and I commissioned the cover art, Night Fisher, from Jeane Cohen. Also around this time, Daniel Carter had emphatically told me, “I’m going to become a rapper by the time I turn 90.” So, a few weeks later Daniel and I were hanging out, recording music and eating stir fry in my Ditmas Park apartment and I convinced him to make some progress on his goals by recording his voice into a microphone. Daniel began by recording an excerpt from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and continued by recording some of his own poetry. The recordings of Daniel from that afternoon would eventually make their way onto this album alongside my own experimentations in production inspired by Lee Scratch Perry, J Dilla and Ingram Marshall. I have since come to believe that this music was waiting for Daniel’s voice and music. Over the next couple of years I experimented with production techniques, renamed the album The Uproar in Bursts of Sound and Silence after an excerpt from The Waves (“wind blows the uproar in bursts of sound and silence across the court / now again they are smashing the china / that is the convention”), moved to the pacific northwest, corresponded with the estate of Virginia Woolf, mastered the entire project onto a cassette tape and convinced 577 records to release it. Emil de Waal’s 2021 release Vente re-introduced the world to a free-spirited Danish group with a nostalgic sensibility and a style which runs from trad jazz, to guitar-led country music and bubbling organ-led grooves. But in much the same way that their music rewards patience and attention, so too does their back-catalogue. Having joined forces with happening Danish label April Records during covid, they are set to re-release their 2015 offering Handmade In Denmark for an international audience - and with a first-time vinyl edition. That’s not to say it slipped the net completely last time around; renowned jazz writer Dave Sumner certainly caught it, describing the magical bond between the musicians and music which hits “that dreamy sweet-spot between wakefulness and a night of peaceful sleep.” But for those new to the party, it gives a chance to map the early iteration of a group whose playing expertly mixes a certain timeless quality with a seemingly unending stream of fresh ideas. The fascinating line-up sees 80-year old clarinet legend Elith "Nulle" Nykjær with jazzrock-pop drummer Emil de Waal, pensive Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren and original group keyboardist Søren Kjærgaard. Writing the liner notes, Danish newspaper critic Henrik Palle notes: “These four diverse musicians share a deeply rooted love of music as a phenomenon which enables them to connect on a level above age, ethnicity and musical background. And as they stand on that level, playing their hearts out, they transcend into a sphere of congenial creativity. The reciprocal inspiration is flaming.” Approaching improvisation with an almost childlike curiosity, De Waal’s warm drum sound underpins the woody clarinet, the gentle throb of the organ and carefully chosen colours from steel guitar, mandola, celeste, marimba and more… Taken as a whole, the nine-tracks are eminently unclassifiable. From “part 1970s tv theme song, part new cool collective jam, and 100% catchy” (Bird Is The Worm) to intricate and rhythmically gifted melodies, there’s something for everyone to discover. And finally, as Palle points out, the album answers that burning question of what folk duo Simon & Garfunkel’s iconic The Sound of Silence would sound like without vocals, played on a tin can music box..!

Markus Acher (best known as singer of The Notwist) typically produces his own music under the name Rayon – this time, however, is a different story. Using his real name, he sends a signal re: the circumstances he recorded the music in - at home in his old apartment in Munich, in a private setting, in a time when there was hardly anything else available. Accordingly, and rather fittingly, the four songs represent a bridge to the outside world: Acher tore the doors to his balcony wide open, inviting the outside in , capturing its sound on tape: rain falling, engine noise of passing cars. And at the same time the songs pushed outward, into that sphere that remained off-limits to us for some time (“Like a plane they can go everywhere”).

The four tracks - arranged for harmonium, acoustic guitar, banjo, glockenspiel, percussion, a children's harp and vocals - were released digitally in 2021 via the Japanese independent platform Minna Kikeru, run by Saya (member of the duo Tenniscoats and Markus Acher's bandmate in Spirit Fest), among others. For two songs of «Like A Plane», Saya contributed vocal tracks as well.

Salar Salman (1959), an exceptional musician and composer, was born in Kirkuk, a city in Kurdistan — the North of Iraq. As a young boy he was famed in his village for his rich and warm voice. When he develloped his talent as a guitar player he was seen as one of the best guitar players from North Iraq. As his fingers found a way to accompany his moving voice, he was able to share his songs with a broader audience. Salar Salman's songs about love, tenderness and soreness affected many people and delivered him the nickname 'Santana of Kurdistan'. Unanswered love, hidden love, lost love, failing love — his lyrics resonated with his peers in their integrity and honesty. But it was not only his new way of storytelling that moved many; the way he composed music was something new. Moving away from the more traditional, folkloric, often monotonous sound, his melodies moved freely. Inspired by Afro-Western sounds from the 70’s and 80’s, like jazz, psychedelic rock or flamenco, he was able to give a new meaning to his own musical heritage and to create an alternative sound that is still influencing younger generations of Iraqi Kurdish musicians today.

New album by the Berlin-based musician, composer and producer MIDORI HIRANO aka MIMICOF, entirely recorded using the EMS SYNTHI100 at Electronic Studio Radio Belgrade during an artist residency: contemporary electronic music / ambient for the advanced listener. Midori Hirano is a Japanese musician, composer and producer based in Berlin. She started learning the piano as a child and later studied classical piano at university. Therefore the music she releases under her own name is based on the use of piano, but yet experimental and an eclectic mixture of modern digital sounds with subtle electronic processing and field recordings. So far, Hirano
released 7 solo albums under her civilian name on labels such as Sonic Pieces and DAUW.

Under the moniker MimiCof she explores the realm of more experimental music and detailed rhythmic patterns, combined with an idea of drawing melodic shapes and harmonies. As MimiCof she performed at prestigious festivals and events such as CTM, Heroines of Sound Festival, Boiler Room Berlin and L.E.V. Festival, and was
selected by Frank Bretschneider for the first volume of the “Sichten” compilation series on his raster label. Besides producing her own works, Hirano has composed music for dance performances, video installations and films which have been screened at Berlin International Film Festival, Krakow Film Festival, SXSW Film Festival and HongKong International Film Festival (among others) and remixed tracks by artists including Rival Consoles, Foam And Sand aka Robot Koch, Liars and Pascal Schumacher.

While the last MimiCof album“ Moon Synch” (2017, Alien Transistor) was recorded on the Buchla analogue modular Synthesizer at EMS Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, her latest effort “Distant Symphony” (the 4th as MimiCof ) was created on a different synthesizer: the EMS SYNTHI 100 Synthesizer at Radio Belgrade. All sounds from this instrument were recorded as single sound samples at first, then mixed and modified into three long pieces of music, so that the audience can experience the machine’s uniqueness and versatility of sound. Hirano understands this work as a gesture of respect for the SYNTHI 100’s character: though a vintage instrument, it has never lost the beauty of its modern sound

f one was to interpret the whole output of Eabs in general, an inquisitive listener would notice that each subsequent album stems from the previous one. The overtones are similar and they can be treated as variations on the same theme. The only thing that changes is the background of the story. It is all about life and death, the beginning and the end of the world, and the role of human beings entangled in all this existentially. Following the futurism lessons from Sun Ra, the band travels to the year 2061, continuing their mission in space in the company of a living legend, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski.

"all These Worlds ARE Yours – Except Europa. Attempt NO Landing THERE." – this was the ominous message from the mythical Monolith of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The quote became a metaphor for the situation the Eabs crew found themselves in when the pandemic hit. It was not only Europe that became inaccessible, the whole world shut down. A reflection emerged that only empathy and cooperation could save humanity. We will not be able to face the greater threat that may come from the outside together by fighting wars among ourselves on Earth. A similar analogy can be seen in Arthur C. Clarke's book series, which was made even more famous by Stanley Kubrick with his iconic screen adaptation, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Released in 1986, the third part of the series has served as an inspiration for the fourth Eabs album titled 2061, a soundtrack to the film that hasn't been made yet.

Collaborative work has always been the domain of Eabs, which is even more audible with their new album as most of the instrumentalists brought their own compositions to the recording session. As a result, the album oscillates in orbits of many genres such as jazz, electronica and hip hop, in such mutations as Miami bass, trap and drill. It might come as a surprise that the role of the spiritual guide and mentor here is played by Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski who has taken part in all the quests in the history of Polish jazz, just like Dr Heywood Floyd traversing the galaxy aboard the Universe spacecraft.

The year 1986 is symbolic for Eabs. Poland was then visited by Sun Ra with his Arkestra carrying a prophecy: "We are living in End Time, all right, but in the last daze. It’s after the end of the world. Don’t you know that yet?" – these words of the Saturnian alien were hovering over the group's previous project. That year Halley's Comet flew close to Earth, inspiring Arthur C. Clarke to write the third installment of A Space Odyssey. The next time we will be able to see this celestial body is not until the eponymous year 2061. In his book, the author envisioned the current decade as full of crises, scandals and disasters. Having been in space for years, Dr Heywood Floyd would observe cities in flames, a nuclear war outbreak, and all the other horrific events from his monitor window. With the nightmare unfolding on Earth, the cultural and linguistic differences that had arisen over the millennia began to disappear, and the appearance of a new sun named Lucifer only accelerated the process. The superpowers, destroyed by warfare against each other, achieved reconciliation and reunification, making the outbreak of further wars of this kind impossible. At last, the existing peace machinery began to choose life over death. The disintegration of the enormous parasitic military business resulted in the acceleration of world economic development. The moral equivalent of war has led to the undoing of centuries of damage and neglect caused by it. This latest Eabs album stands for the time when Halley's Comet will again fly by very close to Earth. We should hope that in the light of recent events, the utopian vision of the author of A Space Odyssey will come true and peace will come to our planet. Fortunately, there will be no need to wait another 40 years for the album.

These recordings features some of the most gorgeous scintillating ethereal jazz that deserved to be released on vinyl. The players featured on these recordings include Mark Edwards, Mike Pickering, Thaddeus Kelly, John Bedford, David Wickins and Julian himself. We commissioned Margate based artist Kavel Rafferty to produce a piece of art that covers the three album sleeves in the form of an apex, with each of the three sleeves fitting together to work as one.

Peer through the windows of the sun-dappled homes in Sicily and you will be faced with a small, strange ceramic object adorning each hallway. It is a glistening pine cone standing upright – a pigna – the longstanding symbol of Sicilian openness and welcome hospitality.

The pigna is a delightfully unusual and yet apt symbol for the title of the third record from Benjamin Harris, AKA Yarni. Ever since his debut LP release in 2017, Yarni has established a following committed to his musical openness, an intuitive curiosity that has spanned everything from house and techno to cinematic ambience and Japanese percussion, as well as jazz horns and afrobeat fanfares. For Yarni, anything goes and everyone is welcome. Now, Pigna sees Yarni reach his fullest and most musically diverse expression, taking its name and ethos from Sicily, but finding a sonic home in the luscious orchestration of a new ensemble of musicians.

Here, at the helm of a nine-person ensemble, Yarni artfully pieces together live improvisations to create the warmth of a seasoned group performing deep within the groove. Opener “Midnight Getaway” places the listener squarely within the disco-funk of Daft Punk as Yarni’s top-line synth intersects with a rolling bassline and a lyrical flute solo from Rachel Shirley. This optimistic tone of sunlit spaciousness is then heightened on “Utopia”, as Yarni’s horn section comes to the fore to pay homage to the ineffable syncopations of Fela Kuti’s pioneering afrobeat.

Rather than scratch at the surface of these musical genres, Yarni’s attuned ear embodies the emotive essence of his various sounds by paying intimate attention to their creation. There is the punch of that afrobeat sax on “Utopia”; the rhythmic skitter of breakbeats on “The Astral”; the sludging thump of funk in the bassline on “Nova”. Collaborators are given free reign, too, to incorporate their own unique stylings into this remarkable whole, from vocalist Emily Marks’ languid tone on “In A Dream”, to saxophonist Jonoa’s innate swing on “Cherub”, and the metronomic movement of bassist Ally McMahon’s playing throughout.

Listening to Pigna is ultimately to find yourself squarely within the comforting embrace of Yarni’s musical mind. It is a truly LP experience – a record to be placed on the turntable’s platter and then left to play, allowing yourself an immersion in these journeying soundscapes. It is no wonder fellow sonic travellers such as the late Andrew Weatherall and DJ Harvey have been supporters of Yarni’s work, since here is a kindred spirit – an artist shaped in the form of radical openness, speaking the hospitable, universal language of beautiful music.

Happy to announce the latest from Chicago-based percussionist Quin Kirchner, this time in an intimate duo setting with France-based pianist Rob Clearfield. Concentric Orbits is Clearfield & Kirchner's gorgeous debut recording as a duo, although they have a long history of playing together over the years in Chicago. You will likely remember Clearfield from his standout playing on Kirchner's The Shadows and The Light (2020, Astral Spirits), and here on Concentric Orbits he takes a bit more of the foreground on the piano with Kirchner's solid, driving support moving the proceedings along. The two sidelong tracks offer different sides of the duo; "Orbit 1" dives in with a insistent and repetitive left piano groove that eventually unfolds into a splattering of free improv that subsides. Cymbals, bells and more from Kirchner lead us through the second half of the track, with Clearfield continuing variations on the original ostinato through to the ending. "Orbit 2" jumps out immediately with a percussive attack complimented by Clearfield's prepared piano that mirrors the percussive sounds without overpowering. Kirchner's groove rides powerfully through the majority of the track, with some truly stirring playing from Clearfield on the second half.

"Glodetrådar", the commissioned work for Vossajazz 2016, is a sort of "back to the roots" for Nils Okland. The area of Voss has been an important part of his musical development, in the 80's as a student and later as the musical leader at Ole Bull Akademiet (1989-95). His time at the academy gave him important impulses that inspired his characteristic, personal style: the mix between jazz, free improvisation, contemporary music and folk music. In this work Okland holds true to his unique style with simple melodies and a sincere tone that go straight to the heart. At one moment it's calm and meditative, the next we find ourselves in a rock universe with the distortion turned to max.

Russell 'Konkie' Halmeyer was born and raised on the small island of Curaçao, located 60 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela. Konkie is a percussionist who specializes in the steelpan, a percussion instrument originating from Trinidad and Tobago that is made out of an industrial drum. He started playing at the age of 12. Throughout his career, he has explored the boundaries of the steelpan and associated genres. He has become one of the most innovative pannists in the Caribbean, taking the steel pan out of its context of steel bands, carnival and calypsos. In the 1990s Konkie toured through the States, where he performed frequently, merging steel band sounds with jazz.

In Curaçao, where he is considered the most important pannist of the island, Konkie mainly performs in hotels and at tourist sites. He enjoys performing for these crowds but his true passion and joy lie in arranging deep and melancholic compositions. These two tracks are the result of that joy. "Simadan Kologá" means "the hanging harvest". "Simadan" or “Seú” is the local harvest period on the island. "Kologá" means "hanging" because Konkie used a hanging steel pan for the arrangement. "Mi Ke Libertat" means "I want freedom". Instruments used: steelpan, drum, conch (seashell horn), and chapi, the iron part of a hoe that slaves used to work the fields with.
