Born in Chiba, Japan, Yasushi Karasawa learned piano from his mother as a young child, and soon began the explorative process in music. His first influences were Yellow Magic Orchestra and the great Ryuichi Sakamoto, leading him to save the pocket money for a Yamaha Cs-15 analog Synth and a double cassette deck for recording. As is the case, musical exploration leads one around the world to Jazz from the US, and in his case it was a borrowed record from Bill Evans that sparked his interest in Jazz piano. Studying at High School and then University, enamored with Evans and naturally Herbie Hancock, the stage was set. He performed at the Tokyo Jazz Clubs and he played in a pop band, but soon he turned to the studio and his own music with the project dubbed N’Sawa Saraca.

The simple story is familiar, but the missing piece is the depth of Karasawa’s musical understanding that comes through on his second album Another Town. One can hear Evans, and the golden age of Jazz interpreted through the lense of an eager Japanese student. And yet the groove is quite modern, with tinges of influences pushing through, like Terrace Martin or Aaron Parks. All of this is done with full respect, crafting the influences to his own discreetly interwoven and dreamlike flow. N’Sawa Saraca manages to capture all of the hefty Jazz solos within a gentle floating frame, enhanced by the flowing vocals of Raphael Sebbag from United Future organization.

Strut present the first ever international reissue of one of the most sought-after albums from the Black Fire catalogue, Lon Moshe & Southern Freedom Arkestra's life-affirming 'Love Is Where The Spirit Lies' from 1977. This first international reissue of the album features new sleeve notes including interviews and commentary by Lon Moshe, Plunky Branch and band members with original illustrated artwork by Mary E. Greer. Audio was remastered from original tapes by The Carvery. "Lon was creating his own path in his music life at this time," remembers Black Fire's Plunky Branch. "We had met in San Francisco and he had become an original member of JuJu during the early '70s. He then wanted to pursue his own music, primarily in jazz; he was an avant-gardist and loved Tribe, Strata-East and Sun Ra." For his Love Is Where The Spirit Lies album, Moshe drew from musicians within the Black Fire stable. Oneness Of Juju's Jackie Eka-Ete sang and helped to write songs and members of Southern Energy Ensemble contributed, including their bandleader Marvin Daniels. Activity are an avant four-piece featuring Travis Johnson, and drummer Steve Levine, both from the band Grooms, bassist Zoë Browne from Field Mouse, and guitarist Jess Rees from Russian Baths. Produced by engineer Jeff Berner of Psychic TV, their debut forms a casually menacing framework for lyrical themes of paranoia, exposed character flaws, and the broader human capacity for growth when an ugly truth is laid bare. Lead single "Calls Your Name," establishes the record's spectral aura with nauseated electronic bells, and a relentless Geoff Barrow-esque drum beat beneath a half-sung, half-spoken lyrics inspired by C.S. Lewis's 1945 novel The Great Divorce. In the novel, characters stuck in a grey, joyless conception of hell repeatedly deny opportunities to be taken into heaven, instead making excuses as to why they should remain in their embittered purgatory states. Allegorically, this speaks to the kind of opportunity for metamorphosis and positive change that's possible when the depths of disillusionment are reached, an idea which permeates much of the album. Despite recurrent aches of discontentment, each track glows with radiant waves of catharsis while elegantly evoking jubilation and anguish within the same breadth, showing that the two are always around the corner from one another.

The album Nobody's Husband, Nobody's Dad is the first entirely solo work of UK-based percussionist Maurizio Ravalico, and it represents a nodal episode in his artistic development. The music on the album is entirely acoustic and live played, with no overdubs added to the initial takes. These have all been slightly edited to different degrees, mainly to fit them into the time limitations of vinyl; but other than that all tracks are faithful reproductions of single, acoustic, uninterrupted one-man performances.
Another distinctive musical trait of the album is a presistent denial of metric recurrence. Maurizio's solo music is focusing on sounds, often generated by unexpected combinations of conventional instruments and found objects, both played using a mix of orthodox and extended techniques, and often on top of a big drum, which augments dramatically their timbrical and tonal range. The finished pieces recall thus the aesthetics of both contemporary and improvised music, despite them being neither strictly composed nor at all improvised.

Companion to the album is A Momentary Convergence of Differently Paced Trajectories, a 12" EP containing remixes of one of Maurizio's album tracks, Fiium Shaarrk and Collocutor.

Maurizio Ravalico

Italian-born visionary cross-genres percussionist Maurizio Ravalico has been one notably eclectic presence in the London music scene since his arrival in the UK, in 1991.
Regularily seen on stage and on releases with the like of Jamiroquai and the James Taylor Quartet throughout the nineties, as well as with virtually every salsa and Cuban-oriented projects to originate from London in the same period, he has subsequently collaborated on many of the projects of the experimental music label Not applicable (Icarus, Isambard Khroustaliov, Alex Bonney, Tom Arthurs) since 2005, and is now an established name in both the London and Berlin improv and experimental scene, having played with John Edwards, Oren Marshall, Steve Beresford, Pat Thomas, Frank Paul Schubert and many others.
Maurizio Ravalico's peculiar approach to percussion is one of the distinctive traits of Tamar Osborn's modal jazz 5-piece band Collocutor (On the Corner records) and of the pan-European trio Fiium Shaarrk (on Bbc3 Late Junction's 12 Best Albums of 2017). Maurizio Ravalico also collaborates with the string quartet Phaedra Ensemble, the composer Fred Thomas and the French contemporary dance company Silenda.

February of 2021 marked an eventful month for visionary Western Massachusetts electro-acoustic percussionist Jake Meginsky: the birth of his daughter Luce, the death of his friend and mentor (and the subject of his celebrated 2018 documentary, Full Mantis) Milford Graves, and the creation of Trinities. A four-piece suite heavily inspired by Graves’ notion of the primacy of threes as “a fundamental pattern in the universe - and the lowest, strongest and most generative structure in rhythm” the album showcases Meginsky’s adventurous vein of pointillist minimalism: stark, oblique, cerebral, fluid. It’s free music in both form and function, liberated from rhythm, pattern, or expectation. Abrupt flurries of metallic reverberations ping and echo against charged silences like avant-garde morse code. Textures clang and hang in low-lit air. Among the many influential teachings of free jazz icon Milford Graves was the idea of three-ness as “the underlying structure… the grounded being of all music.” It’s a concept both dialectical and divine – the sacred geometry of an idea, its opposite, and the synthesis that binds the two. For Trinities, Meginsky developed modular synth patches that allowed him to explore triplet structures in an intuitive way, “the threes as a structural principal, the building blocks, felt rather than heard”. During sleep deprived sessions with his newborn infant listening, he channeled the grief of Graves’ passing in early morning improvisations alternately quiet and questing, inquisitive and defiant.

The outlier is “2521,” a celestial lullaby of suspended frequencies composed on a 4-track in the birthing room of the hospital during a particularly strict phase of quarantine lockdown (no coming or going, or visitors, for a week straight). Meginsky played the piece for his daughter “as she came into this world, and while she slept.” Its harmonic tranquility ebbs and radiates in soft arcs like a soft dawn glowing on the horizon – welcoming those newly here, and waving warmly to those in the hereafter

Gothenburg trio Dark Horse present their new album "Listen". The band, comprising of John Holmström (piano), Alfred Lorinius (bass) and Mårten Magnefors (drums) recorded their second album in a remote cabin by the ocean in Norway, owned by Holmström's family. The natural sound of the album owes a lot to the relaxed surroundings and the result is some high degree of improvised music turning into collective composition as the music unfolds.

The album recording took place at a very active spot in the trio's calendar, following extensive touring in Europe, Japan and their native country Sweden. The two days of improvising were edited down to highlights that easily fill an album's worth of quality listening and reveal what playing live brought to the three musicians: A natural ability to react to ideas, build on them and form coherent, compositional tracks on the spot. A task much easier said than done.

Ólafur was born in Reykjavik. His parents were Stephan Stephensen, a shopkeeper at Verðandi, and Ingibjörg Stephensen, a housewife.

Ólafur graduated from The Commercial College of Iceland on June 16, 1956 and then studied public relations as well as marketing and propaganda at Columbia University in New York where he graduated in 1962.

Ólafur was a pioneer in the advertising services in Iceland which with him turned away from being solely a profession of illustrators to a new era of marketing. Ólafur touched on many subjects through his career. Alongside his study Ólafur worked for NBC News and Meta educational TV. He reported for UN Radio and Voice of America as well as for Afrts under the pen name of Sonny Greco. Ólafur was the managing director of The Icelandic Red Cross, a jazz pianist in Harlem, the spokesperson for the media center of the Nato ministerial summit in Reykjavík in 1968 and hosted a program on the Icelandic National Television. Ólafur was the first Scandinavian citizen to become a member of the Advertising Club of New York, the first president of the Reykjavik chapter of JC as well as the first vice-president of JC International, the host of a jazz program on Icelandic National Radio, a judge for the American Advertising Awards and an active Freemason in Iceland as well as Portugal. Ólafur was awarded a Badge of Honour by the Finnish Red Cross in 1967.

Ólafur founded both ÓSA advertising agency and later Gott Fólk and was the first elected president of the Icelandic Advertising Association. He wrote a large number of published newspaper and magazine articles on his trade of advertising and marketing and released a book on the subject, “New and Better”, in 1987. Ólafur Stephensen released three jazz albums with his jazz trio named Tríó Óla Steph, played music both in Iceland as well as internationally with various jazz combos and was a big fencing enthusiast.

Isak Hedtjärn plays the clarinet — a straight, metal variant of the more common wooden B flat Clarinet. Kvarpan is Isak’s first ‘solo’ record, but you also hear him in ‘quartet’ with himself, too on this diverse suite of improvisations recorded ‘on location’ on a single day at Patons Malmgård — his usual practice spot just by where the ferries head over to Finland. We recorded until the throb of the boats and waiting cars took over.

A polymath of undeniable musicality, Isak is a constant, always invigorating presence across a breadth of ‘scenes’ in Stockholm be it via in his own groups — Grismask, Svenska Folkjazzkvartetten, Festen — or making guest appearances in concert and on record with Viagra Boys, Fire! Orchestra, Rotem Geffen, Kali Malone and many many more. His online notoriety as @JazzIsak, the deft editor of a stream of classic jazz and tiktok dance/crash mashups is not only a riotous good time but gives you some other small window into the scope and scale of his knowledge of and feeling for all the music that has gone before.

His own notes to the record point specifically to clarinettists Johnny Dodds, Perry Robinson, Jimmy Giuffre and Sükrü Tunar and acknowledge the abiding mentorship of Harald Hult, Raymond Strid, Christer Bothén and especially Roland Keijser, the saxophonist and founder of legendary progg combo Arbete och Fritid and a veritable living library of international folk melodies until his passing in 2019. Arthur Russell first visited The Gallery in 1976 with his then boyfriend Louis, who introduced him to Nicky Siano. Arthur became a regular at the space and one night as Siano was playing “Turn the Beat Around”, which had just been released, Arthur waved at him from outside the booth and asked to come in. Nicky opened the door and Arthur suggested they make a record like this together. This ended up being a huge step for Siano as it marked the first ever production by a DJ making a record from scratch.

Arthur had written a song and had an arrangement for it so they assembled a band featuring Wilbur Bascomb who was one of Nicky’s favorite bassists, as well as, Allan Schwartzberg, David Byrne, Miriam Valle, Peter Gordon and Peter Zummo who were all friends of Arthur’s. Russell played the cello and piano – and that was the band. They recorded throughout 1977 and the “Kiss Me Again” 12 inch was finally released in 1978 on Sire Records selling more than 300,000 copies.

The phrase “standards album” was unheard of in 1973, yet within 20 years it had become common parlance in the careers of artists going back to the basics to underscore their vocal prowess. With A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, Nilsson created the template of the solo contemporary singer accompanied by a live orchestra, which set the bar for what followed from Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry, and countless others. The decision to make an album like this one would have been unusual for any contemporary artist around at that time, but it was especially strange for Nilsson. His two most recent rock albums had been incredibly successful, and RCA was surely clawing for another guaranteed hit, but, for Nilsson, this was just another twist and turn in his career.

It is mind-boggling how far ahead Harry Nilsson was in recording A Little Touch. But where other musicians have turned to a standards album as a way to extend or even resurrect their career, Nilsson made one at his absolute artistic peak. No one has had the guts to do it like he did, before or since — and Nilsson knew it.

Jazz is an art form that routinely asks performers to be the guy behind the guy. Louie, Basie, Dizzy all played for others before they became names themselves. Another famous guy behind the guy, Teo Macero, has a little less complicated, but he had more to do with shaping and re-shaping modern music than just his work with Charles Mingus. Part of the reason “Take Five” is considered one of the most famous songs of the 20th century is how Dave Brubeck and his Quartet played it, but it’s also because Macero was behind the glass, slowly turning knobs moving things up at some points, and down at others. It would be enough to produce Time Out, but he also helped mold Thelonious Monk’s sound during his time on Columbia in the 1960s into one of the master’s most fruitful periods. The man also produced Bitches Brew — yes, Bitches Brew, too! Macero isn’t one of the marquee names in the Bible of American Music, but he was an apostle for several of its greatest prophets. Then, in 1957, came Teo. Macero’s warm tenor sax playing is a big part of that, but so is Mal Waldron’s piano, Teddy Charles on the vibraphone, Jerry Segal on drums, and, trusted Mose Allison sideman. Everybody on this album knew exactly what they were meant to do, and they came together to create something lovely that deserves more appreciation than it has been given since its release in ’57.

Shabaka says he's done playing saxophone--including in his beloved groups Sons of Kemet, the Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors--and his new solo album bears that out: it's filled with spiritual ruminations delivered on clarinet and flutes, a deeply felt work that is much different in tone than his firebrand sax work. I saw him play Pharoah Sanders' parts of Promises at the Hollywood Bowl in September, and wept for most of the performance; this album feels like a spiritual successor to Shabaka inhabiting the role of spiritual jazz's most revered monk. Featuring contributions from Moses Sumney--who sings his ass off--Brandee Younger, Carlos Nino, Ndudzo Makathini and a show-stopping flute performance by Andre 3000, this is my favorite album of the year so far in a walk. Two different sound journeys inspired by the majestic and peaceful Pacific Ocean, the vastest, largest and deepest ocean of our planet. Vica Pacheco’s composition takes a calm meditation approach where water flutes and synths brush shoulders to cre-ate a ever expanding mind journey whereas Pak Yan Lau’s ambitions Neo classical piece, The Ocean in Us, talks about that grand overwhelming feeling, that vast space deep under, on the bottom of the Pacific. Both compositions were recorded and created with the particular wet acoustics of the Tank in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in mind. From Philip Hayward and Matt Hill’s liner notes: ‘’The Pacific is a complex space, comprising a third of the Earth’s surface. A cascade of islands runs along its eastern flank, down from the Kamchatka peninsula, through Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines, Melanesia and on to Australasia. In its watery heart the islands of Micronesia and Polynesia stretch across huge distances, north-east to the Hawaiian archipelago, south east to Rapa Nui and south west to Aotearoa and Chatham island. Closer to the shores of the Amer-icas lie Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos Islands, Haida Gwaii and the Aleutians. This is a space that resists easy char-acterisation. The Pacific laps the shores of Japan and Chile, the beaches of Australia’s East Coast and the cold, damp coasts of British Colombia and Alaska alike. Imaginary Eyes is a sweeping, ambitious work that conjures a sound-world with soaring strings, heavy rhythm section grooves, mysterious flute melodies, triumphant brass and McGathey’s expressive touch at the piano. From the frenetic thump of “The Staircase” to the melancholy noir of “Midnight”, to the wild, driving, twists and turns of “Nothing will be as it once was…”, these compositions feature dramatic dynamic shifts as solo piano moments evolve into lush orchestral arrangements. Several years in the making, McGathey started composing this music in 2020 during long periods of isolation, turning to his childhood upright piano for solace. “These all started as solo piano works,” says McGathey, “but during that lonely time, I could feel a subliminal yearning in them to be played with as many musicians as possible.” Leaning into that idea, he drew on the talents of nearly a dozen up-and-coming musicians in Chicago’s jazz and classical scenes to create an epic studio-orchestra sound for this record. this one is getting write ups in the Northeast and will continue to draw buzz. UK music genius Pat Thomas, delivers a new true gem, this time with his project ISM, a classic avant piano trio also featuring Joel Grip on bass and Antonin Gerbal on drums. This recording was captured at the Berlin club Au Topsi Pohl where ISM played four nights in a row, from May 18th to 21st, 2022. For the concerts a Bösendorfer grand piano was brought to the small club—the trio barely fit on stage, but the acoustic sound, all the more omnipresent and precise, was embraced by a highly crafted and risky playing evoking notions of dreams, form, and human vibrations. This is one of those special occasions where skills meet poetry. During the last night of the four-night series of concerts in the tiny German club, the music developed into a magic combination of highly developed improvisational skills wrapped in a particularly inspirational and adventurous atmosphere, gifting the trio the chance to create the album ‘Maua’, which means flowers in Swahili. A true statement in experimental jazz paying tribute to the history of this music but very much actual and projected into the future of the art form. Pat Thomas, is one of the main artists featured on the 577 Records’ catalog, proving once again his intellectual and artistic ability to shine in every context from classic avant jazz, all the way to experimental electronics. One of a number of sessions cut at the Choreographers' Workshop, this 1963 set established Sun Ra's Arkestra as a New York band, sonically coupled to developments in the decidedly urbane downtown arts underground. The stargazing clamor of the music reflects the intensity of a cultural crossroads where concrete and dust pervade any skyward view, from East 3rd Street to Mars and beyond. One of Sun Ra's rarest releases, it had negligible circulation through records shops. While most of the Saturn output couldn't get any rarer or mysterious than it already was, 'When Angels Speak of Love' was released in 1966 it was the most elusive and mysterious in the Sun Ra catalog. It's speculated that the record was issued in two micro runs, with estimates around 150 copies. Hard core collectors around the world had been searching for this gem to no avail until Evidence Records' released a CD of the music in 2000. This updated offering utilizes the actual master tapes and we get to hear the Arkestra in it's cosmic mid-60's prime via mono and stereo fidelity.

Following a fallow 2023, a rejuvenated Growing Bin return to your turntable with this sublime collaborative LP from Gosha Martynov & Natasha Sinyakova. On their first foray into the physical, the duo expand the spectral ambience and medicated breaks of their earlier work with lithe touches of organic jazz and Cafe Del Mar cool, creating a complex assemblage of dreamy downbeat and emotive electronica that's entirely easy on the ears.

Opener "Pozhaluysta" seduces with smart syncopation and beguiling melody, its flute and fretwork finding ample space to slip around Natasha's voice, equal parts Cocteau operatics and jazz-club coquette, in an expression of a want beyond words. The mood shifting "Osvobodi Menia" sees the solemn, snaking sound of a sampled duduk drift into an optimism of airy pads and escapist mantra, suspended in reverb until the end of time. "Ya Tebia Zhdala" began life as a break-led experiment, gradually evolving into a romantic and naive sketch rich with splashes of piano and dynamic chorus pads. Naturalist hymn "O Dereve" weaves a dark and intimate tale from the point of view of a veteran tree as its buzzsaw guitar loops blossom into multilayered vocals full of emotion.

Awash with sonar sweeps, sumptuous pads and rolling subs, the titular "Imena Rek" channels post-rave bliss into the hypnagogic anthem the contemporary IDM-ographic have been searching for. Infectious hooks and spaced out pads ride the breakbeat rhythm for a dreamy experimental pop banger from another planet. The sombre sway of "Rany", filtered through the fog of a broken cassette recorder, trance djembe and unpredictable bass tones rivals the finest Motion Ward or In:dex releases for crepuscular charm, while "Smeshno" sees serrated drones sink into a slinking rhythm, playing counterpoint to the tender chords and yearning vocals.

"Iskra" closes out the chiasmus with a return to the organic experience of the opener, the flute and acoustic guitar augmented with nuanced hand percussion and a music box refrain. Listening to this album is like a midnight walk through an ancient forest - an experience which both scares and tempts you at the same time. From touching damp moss to feeling the thick fog with your body and watching mushrooms glow in the dark, 'Imena Rek' guides you through the terrain.

Flawlessly arranged and executed, this LP alludes to a long lineage of innovative downbeat, feels absolutely essential in the present and pushes the trip hop revivalists towards a fascinating future - Gosha Martynov & Natasha Sinyakova have created a timeless piece of music,

Described by Matthew Garbutt on AllMusic as "one of Mexico's national cultural treasures", the award-winning drummer, composer, arranger, and bandleader Tino Contreras (1924-2021) recorded and performed internationally for more than 60 years. Blending Latin American music with jazz, he created his own original and adventurous sound. In 1957, Contreras formed his first quartet, which reflected an almost bewildering range of influences. Some key albums from this period include Jazz Tropical (presented here) and Jazz a Paris (both from 1962), Jazz Ballet (1963), and Misa en Jazz (1966). The music here marks a fundamental chapter in the evolution of Jesús "Chucho" Valdés' career and development into one of the finest jazz pianists in the world. The concepts that he brought to fruition in the Quinteto Cubano de Jazz, the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, and Irakere, have their roots in the band Chucho formed at the beginning of the 1960's, which due to limited distribution has received little attention from specialists and jazz lovers alike. Chucho's album Jazz Nocturno was recorded in the early 1960's.
