On August 27th 2021, The Third Sound will release their fifth album ‘First Light’ on Fuzz Club Records. Dealing in a hypnotic blend of neo-psychedelia, post-punk and new wave, The Third Sound is a Berlin-based band led by the Icelandic musician Hákon Aðalsteinsson, who is the guitarist in Brian Jonestown Massacre and formerly played in the cult rock’n’roll outfit Singapore Sling. A mainstay of the European psych underground in his own right, not just through his collaborations with the likes of Anton Newcombe and Tess Parks, The Third Sound has been Hakon’s primary solo endeavour since the release of his self-titled debut on Newcombe’s A Recordings a decade ago.

Arriving following 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’ LP, ‘First Light’ marks an evolution into a brighter and at times uplifting sound. Marrying moments of light and dark, the result is The Third Sound’s most dynamic full-length to date. Talking about the album, Hakon said: “This album is definitely less gloomy than the previous one, although some ghosts from the past are lurking in the background. We always try to make something new on each album and never make the same album over again, but this feels like an even bigger change than usual, especially regarding the mood. Something new is beginning although the past is not forgotten. I think the title, First Light, describes the overall feel of the record pretty well.”

‘First Light’ is the fifth full-length from The Third Sound and arrives off the back of 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’, 2016’s ‘Gospels of Degeneration’, 2013’s ‘The Third Sound of Destruction and Creation’ and their 2011 self-titled debut. With Hakon Aðalsteinsson leading the group on vocals and guitar, the rest of the band is currently comprised of Robin Hughes (Guitar / Organ), Fred Sunesen (Drums) and Andreas Miranda (Bass). With a number of European tours in tow, the band have previously shared the stage with the likes of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Warlocks, Singapore Sling, Crocodiles, Clinic, Tess Parks and more.

With 4 songs averaging 2 minutes, the When I Left EP feels like a whirlwind experience from its opening distortion to final feedback.

The title track When I Left is a garage punk banger a la Gun Club meets the Oblivians that tremors and nearly buckles under its own weight before it ends. American Convertible Stools chugs almost entirely on the same infectious blues riff, which could be repetitive with another group at the helm, but here is just incredibly fun and vital. The B-side? You've got the desperate and evil blown-out blues of Black Fly Stew butted up with the gone-before-it-was-here urgency wrapped up in a Bo Shitley beat of Don't Need Nothing.

Give this a spin and you won't need to care about what anyone has to say about anything anymore.

Plus many photos, a family tree and the detailed story of the band.More details?In 1968, The Silver Thunders enjoyed a good reputation within the Bogotá rock circuit. Whether it was for the crazy and insolent image they projected or for the flair they exuded on stage, the four young musicians were regulars on radio and television programs, at youth dances and legendary discos like La Fiebre, The Ship, La Caverna, La Jaula, La Bomba, Panauto and El Diábolo de Oro. All they needed was a record to consolidate their popularity.Today, none of the three living members of the band remembers where they got the money from to invest in the recording, but they got together three or four hours a week over several months in 1968 at the studio Suramericana de Grabaciones. The details of the sessions are hazy and nobody knows who sat behind the mixing desk. Power pop legends The Rubinoos are known for turning bubblegum into gold with ridiculously catchy tunes like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," their cover of Tommy James & The Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now," and the theme song to Revenge of the Nerds. They were the backing band when Jonathan Richman recorded the alternate version of "Roadrunner" and they opened 56 shows for Elvis Costello on his Armed Forces tour. But what's most impressive is that The Rubinoos are approaching their 50th anniversary and penning some of their finest songs to date. "From Home" is a homecoming recording of sorts. It reunites the original lineup of the band and was recorded in the same studio where they recorded their first single for Beserkley Records nearly half a century ago. The album was co-written and produced by Chuck Prophet, and right from the opening of the lead track "Do You Remember," you'll realize that The Rubinoos never left and are here to take you back to Berkeley with them. A second compilation of rarities and oddments from The Revillos! vaults!So many years after the demise of The Revillos, can there be any music rotting in the vaults that hasn't already been regurgitated? I thought we had pretty much exhausted our spare tunes with the From the Freezer CD back in 1996. But, shortly before he passed away, I convenedwith guitarist Kid Krupa to review some of our still-parked material, and we were encouraged enough to the exercise.As we made our selection, the brief we gave ourselves was to not present yet more versions of our already over-represented songs like Motorbike Beat or whatever, but instead to showcase as many rare, bizarre, unreleased out-takes or alternative versions as possible. This compilation has only been possible by sifting through every one of my boxes of tapes from the shed and the attic to rediscover such oddities. I also checked tracks from some other band members and associates. Understandably, the sonic quality of most of this material reflects its provenance, yet their patent rarity warrants these tracks' inclusion: indeed, almost all the material is culled from solitary existing cassette sources. With a lot of damage, including glitches, drop-outs and missing sections, many of these performances were only preserved owing to the digital diligence of Kid Krupa; plus post-production work by myself and Vince Santini; with further mastering tricks squeezed out by Turan Audio in Oxford. The band line-up was quite fluid across the timeframe of these recordings, which were captured between 1979 and 1994 but, generally, Eugene contibutes vocals and sax, Fay sings and plays Farfi sa and I play Premier drums on all tracks. Additionally, all songs feature Kid Krupa on guitar and Vince Santini on bass unless otherwise noted. The Polvos is a psychedelic fuzz rock band formed in the city of Concepción at the end of November 2017. The band is made up of José Ignacio Mora on guitar and vocals, Francisco Pavez on guitar and synthesizer, Bruno Flores on guitar, Wladimir Rodríguez on bass and Roberto Mora on drums. Since 2018, the group has performed various concerts, highlighting the performances at the Woodstaco festivals, Space Trip Fest and the opening show for the Austrian band Porn To Hula, in what was the start of their South American tour. With all the experience of live performances under their arms, The Polvos entered the Bym Records studio in Santiago to record "Darkness Emotion", their first full-length album. The recording and mixing was in charge of Ness Rodríguez (The Ganjas, Wild Parade), while the mastering was done by Rodrigo Gomberoff (Familea Miranda) at Hukot Estudios, Barcelona. From that album comes the single "Elephant", a song inspired by Gus Van Sant's film of the same name and which addresses the student massacre at the Columbine Institute in Colorado, United States. This release of the band comes to crown a season of many important achievements for The Polvos. His music has been featured in various international media and constantly sounded on specialized programs such as Downtown Radio Tucson (Mickmaster's Space Rock Spectacular) in Arizona, USA and Cosmic Fuzz Radio in London, England, among many others.

Los Angeles punk quartet The Paranoyds channel revelry and revulsion into their debut album Carnage Bargain - a raucous blend of garage rock grit, new wave swagger, horror film soundtrack campiness, and a myriad of other influences. The Paranoyds' beginnings can be traced back to a friendship forged between Staz Lindes and Laila Hashemi in their teens. With the additions of Lexi Funston and David Ruiz, the band found the personnel for their sonic balance of jubilant energy and foreboding undercurrents. Carnage Bargain captures this chemistry through guitar-and-keyboard, genre-mashing weirdness on "Laundry," the fever-dream kitsch of B-52s on "Ratboy," krautrock's motorik groove on "Hungry Sam", and Blondie on the sweet-and-salty highlight "Courtney." Title track "Carnage Bargain" is a perfect example of the band delivering scathing lyrical observations under the guise of a quirky pop hook. The notion of rejecting the status quo and creating your own destiny is evident on the lead single "Girlfriend Degree," which the band calls an ode to "being a badass woman who's taking time to make sure she's doing things for herself." The band may be paranoid, but they offer a solution to our modern ills through the act of being an inspiring, independent, and unflappable force.

An exclusive 7” split from Indonesian surf-garage-rock behemoth The Panturas and Sundancer, hailing from Jatinangor and Lombok Respectively. It was the first series from their upcoming “"Singel Klub" series. "Lasut Nyanggut" by The Panturas their first song sung entirely in Sundanese language. The band appointed Ricky Virgana from White Shoes and The Couples Company fame to be their producer, and successfully produced a garage psych-surf-calypso with a mixture of traditional oriental sundanese pop aesthetics. The lyrics of the song itself paints a picture of someone fishing.The title itself is a popular term among fishing enthusiast on the western parts of Java. “Dedare Tanjung” or “Gadis Tanjung” roughly translates to “the girl on the cape”, was inspired from “Dark Eyes” a russian folk song and Ismail Marzuki’s very own “Panon Hideung” which is a song sung in Sundanese language. The band translates the song to their own mother tongue language which is the Sasak, a language that the band originated from.

The Obsessives, above all else, write the music that they want to listen to. Comprised of founding members Nick Bairatchnyi (guitar, bass, vox) and Jackson Mansfield (drums, guitar, keys), their sound has spent the last decade evolving through elements of DIY, grunge, alternative, and math to shape into something that feels the most uniquely authentic to their version of exciting noise. Joined by Ben Kaunitz (guitar, bass) and Coby Haynes (drums, percussion) in 2018, the live lineup has evolved from a sonic rough-and-tumble to a fully collaborative space, encouraging a new era of thematic cohesion. After opening up the creative dialogue beyond just a duo, the band's sound has been able to make a mature tonal shift in style and form. Following the release of 2017's The Obsessives (Lame-O Records), the band has spent a lot of time compartmentalizing and re-shaping their projects. The difference between being 18 and 24 isn't the world, but at the same time _ it is. The Obsessives' sound has grown up with and around them, and is ultra-specific to what they feel are various catalytic experiences. The determinant factor that sets 2015's Heck No Nancy (Near Mint Records) apart from 2021's forthcoming release under producer Will Yip (Memory Music) is an entire set of lives that's been lived. The best part is _ they dig it as much as you will.

On Vertigo Days, the first album in seven years for The Notwist, one of Germany’s most iconic independent groups are alive to the possibilities of the moment. Their music has long been open-minded and exploratory, but from its engrossing structure, through its combination of melancholy pop, clangorous electronics, hypnotic Krautrock and driftwork ballads, to its international musical guests, Vertigo Days is both a new step for The Notwist, and a reminder of just how singular they’ve always been. Most importantly, the core trio of Markus and Micha Acher and Cico Beck are reaching out: as Markus reflects, “we wanted to question the concept of a band by adding other voices and ideas, other languages, and also question or blur the idea of national identity.”

It’s been seven years since The Notwist’s last album, Close To The Glass, and in that time the various members of the group have been busy with side projects (Spirit Fest, Hochzeitskapelle, Alien Ensemble, Joasihno), guest appearances, a record label (Alien Transistor), movie scoring, helping organise the Minna Miteru compilation of Japanese indie pop & running a festival (Alien Disko). Those divergent paths feed back into Vertigo Days in surprising ways, from its structure, built from group improvisations, with songs flowing and melting into one another in a collective haze, to its spirit, which feels refreshed and alive. There’s something cinematic about Vertigo Days too, reflective of the group’s time working on soundtracks, and reflected in the rich, moody photographic artwork by Lieko Shiga that adorns the cover.

The first sign of this newfound openness was the album’s lead single, “Ship”, where the group were joined by Saya of Japanese pop duo Tenniscoats, her disarmingly hymnal voice sighing over a propulsive, Krautrocking beat. Elsewhere, American multi-instrumentalist Ben LaMar Gay sings on “Oh Sweet Fire”, also contributing “a love lyric for these times, imagining two lovers in an uprising hand in hand.” American jazz clarinettist and composer Angel Bat Dawid adds clarinet to the spaced-out dream-pop of “Into The Ice Age”, while Argentinian electronica songwriter Juana Molina gifts some gorgeous singing and electronics to “Al Sur”. Saya also reappears as a member of Japanese brass band Zayaendo, who guest on the album. Throughout, The Notwist also capture the openness of their live performances, too, where they mix and link their songs in unexpected ways.

Indeed, what’s most impressive about Vertigo Days is the way it sits together as one long, flowing suite, the album conceptualised as a whole entity – it’s perfect for the long-distance, dedicated listening experience. This is also captured by the album’s lyrics, which Markus states, “feel more like one long poem.” The dimensions of that poem are multi-faceted, something intensified by the geopolitical weirdness of its times: “As the situation changed so dramatically, while we were working on the record, the theme of ‘the impossible can happen anytime,’ more about personal relationships in the beginning, became a global and political story.” But it also works at a level of poetic abstraction, such that each song gestures in multiple directions – the deeply private pans out to the global. The one certainty is that there is no certainty. “It’s maybe mostly about learning and how you never arrive anywhere,” Markus concurs. To sit within uncertainty is brave, but it’s also where we feel most alive, and Vertigo Days is an album that is brimming with life, with enthusiasm and love for music and for community, all wide-eyed and dreaming.

Most importantly, the core trio of Markus and Micha Acher and Cico Beck are reaching out: as Markus reflects, “we wanted to question the concept of a band by adding other voices and ideas, other languages, and also question or blur the idea of national identity.” It’s been seven years since The Notwist’s last album, Close To The Glass, and in that time the various members of the group have been busy with side projects (Spirit Fest, Hochzeitskapelle, Alien Ensemble, Joasihno), guest appearances, a record label (Alien Transistor), movie scoring, helping organise the Minna Miteru compilation of Japanese indie pop & running a festival (Alien Disko). Those divergent paths feed back into Vertigo Days in surprising ways, from its structure, built from group improvisations, with songs flowing and melting into one another in a collective haze, to its spirit, which feels refreshed and alive. There’s something cinematic about Vertigo Days too, reflective of the group’s time working on soundtracks, and reflected in the rich, moody photographic artwork by Lieko Shiga that adorns the cover. The first sign of this newfound openness was the album’s lead single, “Ship”, where the group were joined by Saya of Japanese pop duo Tenniscoats, her disarmingly hymnal voice sighing over a propulsive, Krautrocking beat. Elsewhere, American multi-instrumentalist Ben LaMar Gay sings on “Oh Sweet Fire”, also contributing “a love lyric for these times, imagining two lovers in an uprising hand in hand.” American jazz clarinettist and composer Angel Bat Dawid adds clarinet to the spaced-out dream-pop of “Into The Ice Age”, while Argentinian electronica songwriter Juana Molina gifts some gorgeous singing and electronics to “Al Sur”. Saya also reappears as a member of Japanese brass band Zayaendo, who guest on the album. Throughout, The Notwist also capture the openness of their live performances, too, where they mix and link their songs in unexpected ways. Indeed, what’s most impressive about Vertigo Days is the way it sits together as one long, flowing suite, the album conceptualised as a whole entity – it’s perfect for the long-distance, dedicated listening experience. This is also captured by the album’s lyrics, which Markus states, “feel more like one long poem.” The dimensions of that poem are multi-faceted, something intensified by the geopolitical weirdness of its times: “As the situation changed so dramatically, while we were working on the record, the theme of ‘the impossible can happen anytime,’ more about personal relationships in the beginning, became a global and political story.” But it also works at a level of poetic abstraction, such that each song gestures in multiple directions – the deeply private pans out to the global. The one certainty is that there is no certainty. “It’s maybe mostly about learning and how you never arrive anywhere,” Markus concurs. To sit within uncertainty is brave, but it’s also where we feel most alive, and Vertigo Days is an album that is brimming with life, with enthusiasm and love for music and for community, all wide-eyed and dreaming.

On 3rd September 2017, director Mike Mills emailed Matt Berninger to introduce himself and in very short order, the most ambitious project of the National’s nearly 20-year career was born and plans for a hard-earned vacation died. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker was coming off his third feature, 20th Century Women, and was interested in working with the band on... something. A video maybe. Berninger, already a fan of Mills’ films, not only agreed to collaborate, he essentially handed over the keys to the band’s creative process.

The result is I Am Easy to Find, a 24-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, and I Am Easy to Find, a 68-minute album by the National. The former is not the video for the latter; the latter is not the soundtrack to the former. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other” -- they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The frontman and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically sidestaged in favour of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group’s orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they’ve created for much of their careers.

When the Mountain Goats got together in March 2020, it was to make not one album, but two. The idea was to again work with Matt Ross-Spang, the dashing Memphis wunderkind. Matt pitched we spend a week at Sam Phillips Recording, his home base in Memphis, followed by another at the storied Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a plan that dovetailed nicely with John's notion of corralling these songs into two complementary batches: one light, one dark. The Memphis album_Getting Into Knives, would be brighter, bolder, marked by rich and vibrant hues; the Muscle Shoals album _ Dark in Here, is quieter, smokier, but more deeply textured and intense. We were all aware of the mythos surrounding Fame. The second you step inside you transport to its early '60s heyday and its louche mid-'70s denouement. The room we set up in is the room where Percy Sledge sang "When a Man Loves a Woman" and where Aretha Franklin recorded "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)." The Wurlitzer with which Spooner Oldham opens the last? It's sitting right there. Spooner is living musical history, having played with everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to Linda Ronstadt and Liberace, for crying out loud. And Spooner is all over Dark in Here_any time you hear a bit of Hammond organ or electric piano chiming in without repeating a phrase. We tracked the album's one outright banger, "The Destruction of the Kola Superdeep Borehole Tower," live with Spooner, and "Mobile" and "Dark in Here" with guitarist Will McFarlane_another local veteran who played with Bonnie Raitt for years. We only had Spooner for two afternoons, though, and Will for just one. After it was just the four of us: John playing acoustic guitar and occasional piano, the rhythm section of drummer Jon Wurster and myself, and our jack-of-all-trades Matt Douglas picking up everything else. The result is something more stripped down and intimate than the lush arrangements of Getting Into Knives. Of "The Slow Parts on Death Metal Albums," John concedes that the song is autobiographical. While the lines, "In a new universe / trying to find the mask that fits me" would take on a newly literal connotation in the weeks to come, the song is about going to late `80s metal shows at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, and about seeking a sense of identity and community in strange and occasionally forbidding places. This theme _ feeling at once conspicuous and invisible, the frustrated craving for acceptance _ is echoed elsewhere. Then there are elegies to lost causes, some big and institutional ("The Destruction of the Kola Superdeep Borehole Tower"), some small and personal ("Arguing With the Ghost of Peter Laughner About His Coney Island Baby Review," a tribute to David Berman, whose return from self-imposed musical exile had been cause for huge celebration in our camp). "Before I Got There" neglects to identify its victims, or the tragedy that's befallen them. John writes in the liner notes that "if you're looking for a governing theme here, it's calamity, as all the songs are either anticipating one or reflecting one that's already happened." - Peter Hughes, Rochester, March 2021
