A Love That Leads To War is a clear departure in style and mood for Memphis Tennessee’s Aquarian Blood. The band’s 2017’s debut LP on Goner Records, Last Nite In Paradise, is a chaotic punk epic, rising and falling like the soundtrack to a paranoid nightmare. As a live act, the six-piece band’s sonic atrocity left clubs and house shows around Memphis on life support. The band’s follow up Goner release, A Love That Leads To War, is a more intimate offering of fifteen tracks. Indirectly sparked when full-band drummer Bill Curry was temporarily lost due to a broken arm, Aquarian Blood began playing out in February 2018 as a scaled-down, four-piece incarnation. This more personal album was written, recorded and (almost entirely) performed by founding husband / wife duo J.B. Horrell (Ex-Cult) and NOTS alum Laurel Horrell.

Just grazing the surface of the album can draw a line backwards from the acoustic entirety of A Love That Leads To War to Aquarian Blood’s unsettling past. The opening track “There’s A World” is a finger-picked fever dream nailing the rarified “beauty jumps into bed w/ horror” sweet spot so squarely one can’t believe it’s not a cover of some hippy hangover perfection dating back to the Nixon administration. It’s no first-song / best-song hat trick, but rather a deft setup of the next thirty-nine minutes. “No Place I Know,” “In the Water,” and “Their Dream” would fit in well in the shimmier side of the Shimmy Disc catalog, and “Thought Of Her” is reminiscent of Damon and Naomi. Taken as a whole, though, this album retains the unsettling feel of the best atmospheric ’60s loner psych better than any of the above, and the occasional addition of swirly moog and staccato drum pad beats keep it from slipping into nostalgia. A Love That Leads To War is the perfect sound to erase the summer and soundtrack the low-hum of cold-weather anxiety.

C'est ça marks the reunion of Montréal avant-rock quartet Fly Pan Am, who released an acclaimed series of albums in Constellation's early years, from 1999-2004. The band's heady collision of motorik repetition, shoegaze maximalism, punk skronk, tape- and electronic-based interventions and audio sabotage, garnered them a cult following among fans of audaciously deconstructed post-rock. C'est ça is a welcome return to form - an album of undeniably renewed vitality and experimentation where rock structures underpinned by J.S. Truchy's trademark rapid-fire bass and Félix Morel's disciplined, ascetic drumming are submerged beneath waves of processed guitar by Roger Tellier-Craig and Jonathan Parant, with fluorescent noise treatments and sonic vandalisms wrought by all four. Songs variously nod to key influences like MBV and Husker Dü, the intrepid proto-Kosmiche of This Heat and Can, and later style-adjacent torchbearers like Boredoms, Flying Saucer Attack and Trans Am - all the while collapsing into/out of themselves in various ways. But Fly Pan Am have always and reliably been much more than the sum of their influences: C'est ca is terrific new collection of restless, conceptual, viscerally ethereal noise rock that could come from no other band, sparkling with the creative buzz of lifelong artistic intensity, dialogue and friendship.

The four piece-Julia Shapiro (vocals, guitar, drums), Lydia Lund (vocals, guitar), Gretchen Grimm (drums, vocals, guitar) and Annie Truscott (bass)-is nine years deep in this, after all. It seems now, more than ever, that circuit is a movement of intentionality, one that creates a space inside which they can be themselves, among themselves. It's a space where the euphoria of making music with your best friends is protected from the outside world's churning expectations. It's a kind of safe zone for the band to occupy as their best selves: a group of friends who love each other. Their fourth record, Chastity Belt, comes out of that safe space. After a restorative few months on hiatus in 2018, each member worked on solo material or toured with other bands. "So much of the break was reminding ourselves to stay present, and giving ourselves permission to stop without saying when were gonna meet up again," says guitarist Lydia Lund. "It was so important to have that-not saying, 'we're gonna get back together at this point,' but really just open it up so we could get back to our present connection." Their experience navigating adult life within the strange seasons of the music industry has Chastity Belt orienting themselves towards whatever gets them to feel the most present with each other, in any part of the band grind. Born and bred in London, John Hoyles moved to Sweden in his early teens where he became the lead guitarist in the legendary doom metal band Witchcraft in the year 2000 playing on their self-titled debut, 'Firewood' & 'The Alchemist'. Nine years later he founded the band Spiders, and in 2016, he formed the group Big Kizz, together with his friend Axel Sjöberg from Graveyard. Whether creating in tandem with his fellow musicians or flying solo on his own, Hoyles creates music from the heart: some punk, pub rock, a little 70's glitter, heavy psych and a touch of vintage metal. His playing and singing are honest and accomplished while his warm, wicked tone is unmistakable.

Bad Omen Records reissue Hoyles' 2017 solo album, 'Night Flight' (previously issued on the now defunct Swedish label Crusher Records), including the previously unreleased track "Highwire". One of the more interesting rock releases of the past few years, 'Night Flight', is a killer sounding rock and roll album that would sit right at home in the late 1970’s London scene. It's also the first time that the guitarist brought his gruff British-accented snarl to the mic, to alluring result. The eight track album clocks in at just under 22 minutes and includes the punk-flavored opener ‘Talking About You’, the acid folk cut ‘In the Garden’, the psychedelic title track, a killer cover of former Pink Fairies guitarist Larry Wallis’ “Police Car”, and more.

The debut album from Melbourne, Australia quintet Possible Humans has been a long-time coming. Since forming in 2013, the band (comprised of Samuel Tapper, Leon Cranswick, and the three Hewitt brothers; Steven, Adam, and Mark) have self-released a "live improv" cassette & a two-song 7-inch on Sydney's Strange Pursuits label while periodically teasing a forthcoming full-length and burning up live venues across Australia. Everybody Split was announced to arrive on April Fool's Day of 2019 on ex-Twerps drummer Alex MacFarlane's excellent Hobbies Galore label. Thankfully, it wasn't a prank & the edition of 200 LPs sold out in a week. Originally released in October 2016 as a long-since sold-out self-released cassette, Hardly Art is proud to announce that Sleepyhead, the debut full-length from celebrated Chicago band Lala Lala, will be available for the first time ever on LP and CD (along with a new run of cassettes). Recorded in a basement over the course of five days during a typically-inhospitable Midwestern winter, Sleepyhead is an auspicious-if, at the time, criminally overlooked-debut effort from the young songwriter Lillie West and her then-lineup of supporting players (Abby Black on drums and Karl Bernasconi on bass). Unlike 2018's critically-acclaimed The Lamb, Sleepyhead is a rawer, more punked-up album with fewer lyrical metaphors obfuscating it's intimate, direct emotionality. Committed to tape in an urgent outburst of creative energy, the self-produced record eschews overdubs and takes unfussy aim at the listener's ears, heart, and the lump in their throat. Album standout "Fuck With Your Friends" was a breakthrough moment for West-it was the first song she ever wrote, one that tumbled out of her fully-formed, setting her on the path that's led to her recent successes. Its also emblematic of Sleepyhead's confessionalism and fearless forthrightness: "I drink more than I want to 'cause it makes you easier to talk to / And what you're saying is boring," West sings.

BUSH TETRAS formed in 1979 out of NYCs No Wave/Post Punk/Art Funk/Dance Junk scene. The band's debut release TOO MANY CREEPS on the legendary 99 Records is one of that scenes defi ning moments, capturing perfectly the vibe of that very particular moment in NYC. BUSH TETRAS was one of the supporting acts for The Clash's mythical 17-show run at Bond International Casino in the spring of 81. Topper Headon also produced their Rituals EP for Stiff Records. In 1983, the members of BUSH TETRAS went their own ways and the band remained relatively quiet and elusive for the next several decades.

Original members Cynthia Sley, Dee Pop, and Pat Place now joined by Val Opielski taking over bass duties for the late Laura Kennedy. 2018 saw the release of Take The Fall ep on Wharf Cat Records the bands fi rst new music in 10+ years and the welcome return of BUSH TETRAS!!! This winter, we cleared our Cass Corridor showroom fl oor and enlisted the help of Third Man Mastering's Bill Skibbe and Warren Defever to record There is A Hum, Seven Years and Sucker is Born (Bandcamp exclusive).

It was quick and punk and magical.

Power pop legends The Rubinoos are known for turning bubblegum into gold with ridiculously catchy tunes like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," their cover of Tommy James & The Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now," and the theme song to Revenge of the Nerds. They were the backing band when Jonathan Richman recorded the alternate version of "Roadrunner" and they opened 56 shows for Elvis Costello on his Armed Forces tour. But what's most impressive is that The Rubinoos are approaching their 50th anniversary and penning some of their finest songs to date. "From Home" is a homecoming recording of sorts. It reunites the original lineup of the band and was recorded in the same studio where they recorded their first single for Beserkley Records nearly half a century ago. The album was co-written and produced by Chuck Prophet, and right from the opening of the lead track "Do You Remember," you'll realize that The Rubinoos never left and are here to take you back to Berkeley with them. The first pressing of "From Home" arrives on limited edition black and yellow splatter vinyl!
