This year marks 25 years since Oasis’ two iconic record breaking live concerts at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire on the 10th and 11th August 1996. The shows were both the pinnacle of the band’s success and a landmark gathering for a generation of young people. Released alongside the cinema debut of the feature length documentary film of the event, ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ is the definitive live recording featuring a setlist packed with stone cold classics album taken from across both nights of the concert, from the opening salvoes of ‘Columbia’ and ‘Acquiesce’, to ‘Champagne Supernova’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Live Forever’, an orchestra backed ‘I Am The Walrus’, and ‘Wonderwall’ the first song from the 1990’s to reach over one billion streams on Spotify and universally loved anthem. The DVD and Blu-ray formats feature ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ - the eagerly anticipated feature length documentary telling the story of the special relationship between Oasis and their fans that made the largest concert of the ‘90’s possible, directed by Grammy Awardwinner Jake Scott. It is told entirely in the moment through the eyes of the fans who were there, built around extensive and never before seen archive concert and backstage footage from the event, with additional interviews with the band and concert organisers. Recorded quickly at the Unknown -- the recording studio which is home to the band, and is owned and run by member Nicholas Wilbur. It picks up where they left off (released under former band name Hungry Cloud Darkening), pointing new light into that old familiar hollow, as well as putting forward some new experiments including what the band deviously refer to as "rock songs". Most of all, the record seems to be the natural progression of the 3 now 30-somethings (Nich, Allyson Foster, & Paul Frunzi [Ever Ending Kicks]) continuing to follow a thread with no outside pressure or illusions of where it might lead, exercising their strange luck to be available for such tinkering.

The intersection of hope and resignation can be a disarming place, but also incredibly beautiful. It’s where Oh Smokey, the tenth Clem Snide album, spends a lot of its time. Eef Barzelay, the songwriter behind the name since time immemorial, describes Oh Smokey as “slow, sad songs about God and death,” knowing full well that he’s being technically accurate but wryly incomplete. Like a sleepy late night road trip conversation about a near death experience, the record makes space for some intimate contemplation of what lies beyond. Barzelay wrote these eight songs while upending much of his life. His 25-year marriage dissolved, he parted ways with his longtime manager, and he left his Nashville home after two decades. If you look at it one way, he’s been almost cosmically unlucky in the business, with a big break always around the corner that doesn’t exactly materialize. Seen from another angle, he’s built a dedicated fanbase person by person by creating an improbably timeless body of work, playing living rooms, and even writing personal songs for individual fans. This collection of songs was brought to life with longtime Clem Snide fan Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, Craig Finn, Hiss Golden Messenger). Kaufman added color and texture to Barzelay’s compositions, from the gentle sonic shrapnel of album opener “Free” to the organic hum that “At Your Command” rests on to the swelling expansiveness of title track “Smokey,” which was inspired by Eef’s fleeting collaboration with another Clem Snide fan: pop star Yebba. With 30 years now of rising and falling Clem Snide emerges from the ashes, once again, with Oh Smokey. I used a lot of comparisons to Judee Sill when writing about Ainsley Wagoner last month. When this site premiered a track from One True Light, the new album from Wagoner's Silverware, I wanted readers to know that this was something rare. Ainsley Wagoner has a voice as clear and pure as you're likely to find in indie rock these days. Comparisons to very early Sarah McLachlan wouldn't be out of order; check out 'Longer', one of the more elegantly plaintive numbers on One True Light. And that voice is housed within robust arrangements elsewhere, like on the opening title cut, where things gradually build to a dramatic swell. The lovely 'Gloria' is a highlight here for me, as is 'Goodbye', the achingly beautiful piano-centered closer. There are a lot of singer-songwriters these days. That's a point I've made in multiple posts here. What's not common is to find one of those whose voice matches the material at hand, and whose material is so finely crafted to the voice behind the words. There’s a Billy Joel album called An Innocent Man where apparently each song is an homage to pop music from the piano man’s childhood. It was not planned, but this is essentially a take on that concept, resulting in a heartfelt and celebratory swirl of the music the band loved in their formative years, leaning into the similarities to groups like Yo La Tengo, Low, Belle & Sebastian, The Magnetic Fields, or Stereolab like you would a big hug.

My bandmates Margo and Xandy both had infamous Asheville house show venues, Jake was in like a billion different bands which often played in their muggy basements and Alan was usually the one who brought the PA. Our common interests in noisey ‘90s guitars, good lyrics, and country music was quickly what permeated into our voice as a band. Most decisions in our songs are made by an amalgamation of all five of our inputs, which happens pretty naturally because of this thread of influences that ties us together. So when we got an opportunity for some recording time with Alli Rogers at Betty’s studio in Durham, NC we decided to record covers, and hopefully repay in part the huge debt we are in to the artists who contributed so much to the music we write ourselves. When I was thinking if there was anything that these songs have in common, the main thing I found recurring was the combination of sadness and humor. Kolkata-based musician Nilotpal Das aka Bios Contrast's new album 'Red River', arrives as a narrative sequel to his 'Dragon Rising' LP on Hong Kong DIY label Mouhoi. The concept behind the record is a speculative historical drama and myth taking place during the deadly Kalinga War in the Mauryan Empire of India.

Following his intensive 24-hour harmonium drone compositions, Das's 'Red River' uses recordings of Bell 407, a civil utility helicopter as the main body of the record together with a 47-year-old harmonium, field recordings at Chandraketugarh, custom built woodwind prototype instruments together with guitar, violin & vocal improvisations.

My bandmates Margo and Xandy both had infamous Asheville house show venues, Jake was in like a billion different bands which often played in their muggy basements and Alan was usually the one who brought the PA. Our immersion in music predated us trying to make songs together ourselves. Our common interests in noisey ‘90s guitars, good lyrics, and country music was quickly what permeated into our voice as a band. Most decisions in our songs are made by an amalgamation of all five of our inputs, which happens pretty naturally because of this thread of influences that ties us together. So when we got an opportunity for some recording time with Alli Rogers at Betty’s studio in Durham, NC we decided to record covers, and hopefully repay in part the huge debt we are in to the artists who contributed so much to the music we write ourselves. When I was thinking if there was anything that these songs have in common, the main thing I found recurring was the combination of sadness and humor.
