Power pop legends The Rubinoos are known for turning bubblegum into gold with ridiculously catchy tunes like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," their cover of Tommy James & The Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now," and the theme song to Revenge of the Nerds. They were the backing band when Jonathan Richman recorded the alternate version of "Roadrunner" and they opened 56 shows for Elvis Costello on his Armed Forces tour. But what's most impressive is that The Rubinoos are approaching their 50th anniversary and penning some of their finest songs to date. "From Home" is a homecoming recording of sorts. It reunites the original lineup of the band and was recorded in the same studio where they recorded their first single for Beserkley Records nearly half a century ago. The album was co-written and produced by Chuck Prophet, and right from the opening of the lead track "Do You Remember," you'll realize that The Rubinoos never left and are here to take you back to Berkeley with them. A second compilation of rarities and oddments from The Revillos! vaults!So many years after the demise of The Revillos, can there be any music rotting in the vaults that hasn't already been regurgitated? I thought we had pretty much exhausted our spare tunes with the From the Freezer CD back in 1996. But, shortly before he passed away, I convenedwith guitarist Kid Krupa to review some of our still-parked material, and we were encouraged enough to the exercise.As we made our selection, the brief we gave ourselves was to not present yet more versions of our already over-represented songs like Motorbike Beat or whatever, but instead to showcase as many rare, bizarre, unreleased out-takes or alternative versions as possible. This compilation has only been possible by sifting through every one of my boxes of tapes from the shed and the attic to rediscover such oddities. I also checked tracks from some other band members and associates. Understandably, the sonic quality of most of this material reflects its provenance, yet their patent rarity warrants these tracks' inclusion: indeed, almost all the material is culled from solitary existing cassette sources. With a lot of damage, including glitches, drop-outs and missing sections, many of these performances were only preserved owing to the digital diligence of Kid Krupa; plus post-production work by myself and Vince Santini; with further mastering tricks squeezed out by Turan Audio in Oxford. The band line-up was quite fluid across the timeframe of these recordings, which were captured between 1979 and 1994 but, generally, Eugene contibutes vocals and sax, Fay sings and plays Farfi sa and I play Premier drums on all tracks. Additionally, all songs feature Kid Krupa on guitar and Vince Santini on bass unless otherwise noted. Backing vocals are supplied by Revette Cherie, joined by either Babs or Drax - except for Scuba Scuba and I Wanna Be Your Man - which feature Frankie and Polly Revette.So - ladies and gentlemen of the jukebox jury - is this project a val...

After six years, The Notwist return with three new tracks on Morr Music. It’s both an exposition of the the band’s musical variety and a prospect on a forthcoming album. Six years have passed since The Notwist released their last regular studio album, but that doesn’t mean that the members of this outstanding band have been idle in the meantime. There have been side projects, movie scoring, and other activities, like programming four editions of „Alien Disko“, a festival taking place in Munich, Germany. One of that event’s regular guests was the Japanese duo Tenniscoats – and a lovely side effect from that was an evolving friendship between the two bands. It lead to various collaborations: most recently in a new album by international band „Spirit Fest“ (featuring Tenniscoats singer Saya & The Notwist’s Markus & Cico) & a deep digging compilation of Japanese indie music called „Minna Miteru“. The title track of this new EP is another step in this collaboration – and a first step to an upcoming album by The Notwist – as it features Saya, who lends her voice to the percussive song. It is build around a slightly detuned synthline, which is contrasted by more pragmatic guitar work. „It neither sounds like The Notwist, Tenniscoats, nor Spirit Fest“, tells Markus Acher. „Just like Saya is saying in the lyrics: ‘I want to go outside, I want to meet people’, „Ship“ is another chapter in what The Notwist always tries to do: redefining itself, exploring something new, integrating different styles of music and collaborating with musicians they admire.“ The second song „Loose Ends“ is, in contrast, more classic Notwist material. A gently expanding ballad, this time featuring the distinctive voice of Markus Acher. The song came out of recording sessions for the soundtrack for „One Of These Days“, a movie by Bastian Günther. The EP then closes with „Avalanche“ a carefully optimistic instrumental. With its variety of styles, „Ship“ also serves as an outlook on an upcoming album, which will be influenced by the band’s experiences from their detailed work of creating sounds and moods for film soundtracks, and it will include more collaborations with international guest musicians.

Back in 2007, the Tokyo-based duo known as Suishou no Fune visited San Francisco, and during their stay participated in a recording session with old friends Mason Jones and Mike Shoun, who were operating under the name Numinous Eye. That session was released in a very small edition several years later by the Essence Music label from Brazil as "Black Flowers Of The Forest In The Cosmos". When Suishou no Fune were planning their latest trip to San Francisco in May of 2018, as part of filming for a documentary, plans were made for a follow-up recording. The quartet crammed themselves into a small rehearsal space, along with two guests who filmed the proceedings, and spent the afternoon creating dark, heavy psychedelic atmospheres.

On 3rd September 2017, director Mike Mills emailed Matt Berninger to introduce himself and in very short order, the most ambitious project of the National’s nearly 20-year career was born and plans for a hard-earned vacation died. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker was coming off his third feature, 20th Century Women, and was interested in working with the band on... something. A video maybe. Berninger, already a fan of Mills’ films, not only agreed to collaborate, he essentially handed over the keys to the band’s creative process.

The result is I Am Easy to Find, a 24-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, and I Am Easy to Find, a 68-minute album by the National. The former is not the video for the latter; the latter is not the soundtrack to the former. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other” -- they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The frontman and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically sidestaged in favour of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group’s orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they’ve created for much of their careers.

THE LAST's album, Look Again, was recorded 40 years ago and never released. The short story is that The Last's debut, LA Explosion had made them one of the bigger bands in the LA scene playing shows with X, The Germs, even having The Go-Gos open for them a few times. Following the release of LA Explosion, The Last had major label attention but rather than sign and record using a label's money, the band decided to record it themselves, shop it around and sign with the highest bidder. Simple enough. They went into the newly created studio owned and operated by JO Julian of the band, Berlin, and recorded Look Again. Jo Julian wouldn't let them touch his fancy new board and insisted on mixing the record himself. The band hated the resulting mix and ended up shelving the record rather than let anyone hear it. Despite the band hating the sound of the record, their manager had some test pressings made to shop. This time, not one label made an offer. Those test presses now fetch over $800 on Discogs. Everyone thought the record was lost forever, even the band. Through some luck another set of tapes from those original sessions were recently discovered and the band was able to take the tapes to a new studio and mix Look Again exactly how they always envisioned the songs sounding. And this is the record we have for you today. After 40 long years, The Last Look Again is here.

Past acclaim - particularly when it's attached to some of the most visceral and elemental rock 'n' roll of one's generation - can become both a help and a hindrance; impossible to shake off but crucial to continued acceptance in the fickle world of pop music. Not that this is any concern of The Galileo 7 of course. As the title of their sixth album proudly proclaims, There Is Only Now, and this record is nothing if not Now! From humble beginnings 10 years ago as a DIY outlet for Allan Crockford's songwriting ambitions (he was rarely afforded such luxuries as bass-wielding anchorman of The Prisoners, JTQ, Prime Movers, Solarflares et al) The Galileo 7 has evolved into a powerhouse live act delivering the kind of lysergically-inclined technicolour garage-rock rarely witnessed these days; one born of experience, exploration and an enjoyment of one's own craft. Following a period of fluctuation, the present line-up stabilised around Crockford (vocals, guitar), Paul Moss (bass, vocals), Viv Bonsels (keyboard, vocals) and the busiest man in garage, Matthew 'Mole' Lambert (drums, vocals) - yep, there are a lot of vocals in the mix here and the record is all the brighter for it. The G7's long-players since 2016's storming "live in the studio" set Live-O-Graphic have carried way more clout as a result of this newfound energy, breathing fresh life into Crockford's songs as the songs themselves delve ever more skilfully into a pool populated with Dandyish psychedelic pop, British Invasion muscle, new-wave sparkle and that ever-present Medway magic. "I wanted to make an album a lot quicker this time," Allan explains. "The last one took nearly two and a half years. This one has been written and recorded in less than a year, which is pretty good going for us. This time we were rehearsing and recording the songs pretty much as soon as I'd written and demoed them, and I think it has a unified feel that I really like." The approach to capturing the group's hot sound on tape remains the same. "The tracks would go down on 8-track tape then be transferred onto my digital multi-track, then put on the computer at home for all the overdubs and mixing. I'd like to record in a 'proper' studio for a month with an engineer, lovely 2-inch tape and vintage compressors, but this is a budget operation!" Ah, the tracks - a more panoramic, dare we say eclectic selection than we've heard before from the G7. The pastoral psych-pop moments are more colourful, the crash-bang-wallop gear more dynamic, the riffs sharp enough to take your eye out. "I don't know if 'challenging' is the right word," he continues, "but in the context of this kind of 'garage' sub-genre we all get lumped into, it's almost like we're taking a risk by doing something a little different, quiet, slow, odd, proggy, whatever. We're just a pop group, in the original sense of the word, so if I accidentally write something a bit different we'll have a go at it." For the first time all four members are featured as lead singers. "I wanted everyone to sing at least one song on this album, mainly because I get sick of hearing my own voice for 40 minutes. I'm probably the least accomplished vocalist in the band. I think having different vocalists and some 'different' songs on the album makes this album a better listen as a whole - it was definitely easier to come up with a decent track listing that varied the pace and feel." "Improvising on a theme of doubt," Crockford sings on 'The World Looks Different Today', yet There Is Only Now is possibly The Galileo 7's most satisfyingly determined record yet; its sonic peaks and troughs bound together by four people singing and playing in unison, and from the heart. The godfathers of the American neo-psyche scene The Flaming Lips present their new album, American Head. It is composed of thirteen titles that could be described as cinematographic, produced by their long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and by the members of the group themselves. The album has beautiful collaborations: on 'God and the Policeman ' we find the superstar of the country Kacey Musgraves. As evidenced by the first single from the album 'Flowers Of Neptune 6', American Head takes a turn that recalls the great hours of their discography, in particular their 1999 masterpiece The Soft Bulletin. American Head may well be their most beautiful and coherent work to date.
