Vocalist Chaka Malik and guitarist Chris Traynor met in the New York hardcore band Burn and began playing together as early as 1992. With an early version of Orange 9mm, the duo released a live EP in 1993. The recording earned the 7 band a contract with East West, and after picking up bassist David Gentile and drummer Matthew Cross, Orange 9mm began recording. Driver Not Included was released in 1994, and the band spent time touring with Helmet before signing with Atlantic the following year. Gentile left later in 1995 and was replaced by Taylor McLam just after recording ended for Tragic, with production by Barkmarket's David Sardy. Tragic was released in 1996; it would be three years before Orange 9mm issued a follow-up, which bore the title of Pretend I'm Human.

Thus, he perpetuates this tradition of the uprooted freak that we sometimes come across on the terraces of cafes in the South of France which, like a storyteller, make you escape with crazy stories. He has already played in front of 15,000 people at a festival in Wuhan! It's therefore easy to understand that A Break Away, this new solo album, is a journey disc in the form of a breakaway (literally A Breakaway, for those who haven't followed, be it from society, taking holiday, or a strategy in competitive cycling), the album recorded during a return to Australian soil during the last March. In eleven titles, Nathan brings together the great story (Ground Zero) and his most personal memories, mourning his dear collection of records, sold in order to survive on his arrival in France (Recollection) and suffering memory loss because of it, narrating his successive encounters with his idols David Berman (Silver Jews) and Daevid Allen (Two Davids House) in his youth. This naturalistic writing, which can evoke Jonathan Richman, is combined with an encyclopedic knowledge of guitar music, forged while he was a record store in Australia. A creation of ex-Warm Soda bandleader Matthew Melton and his wife Doris Melton, Dream Machine is a Los Angeles based psych-rock group with a keen ear for vintage sounds. Influenced by classic rock like Heart, Deep Purple, and Iron Butterfly, the group features Melton on guitar, bass and vocals, his wife Doris on organ, synth, and vocals, and Billy Odyssey on drums. After being unfairly cancelled by their former record label, Dream Machine went rogue, moving forward by releasing on Matthew Melton's own Fuzz City Records, and establishing a headquarters on their YouTube Channel where they document their analog recording process and discuss various topics. There's something for everyone on Dream Machine's highly anticipated 3rd studio album: "Living The Dream". It exists in its own space, somewhere between 70s Prog Rock and 80s Synth Pop. In a partial departure from the heavy psych and prog-influenced garage rock they've been previously known for, "Living The Dream" offers something new, with a more developed sound. Some tracks, including "You Forgot To Dream", feel like early 80s synth pop, and "Until Tomorrow" flirts with disco on an otherwise mellow rock track that soon erupts into a compelling synthesizer solo that will sweep all your cares away.

Classic Soundracks Vol. 3 is their tenth studio soundtrack compilation album, co-produced by Riley Bray and Jello Biafra, it completes a trilogy of themes from various feature films, documentaries, and TV mini-series. This final installment reveals a new level of maturity from the band, opening doors to new genres including espionage-esque Bond themes, upbeat guitar duets, “Italian Polizia” car chase electronica, hard rock from the Middle East, psychedelic disco, and progressive “kung fu” rock.

Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. (formerly Ducks Unlimited), the bright jangle-pop duo of Tom McGreevy (lead vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Evan Lewis (guitar, bass, drum programming), accomplish the impossible. The pair craft songs that play to very specific inspirations without drowning underneath them—immediately evidenced on their critically acclaimed EP, Get Bleak, and sharpened on Modern Fiction, their debut LP. “The Servants, The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Television Personalities, Felt,” Evan rattles off. “Look Blue Go Purple is one I reference a lot with our production.” Echoes of ‘80s indiepop abound, but they never overwhelm. This is not a nostalgic record, after all, nor is it a derivative one. Instead, across 10 cheery-sounding songs, Ducks Ltd. explore contemporary society in decline, examining large scale human disaster through personal turmoil (hence the title, taken from a university course called Gnosticism and Nihilism in Modern Fiction, influenced by Graham Greene novels. Bookish indie fans, look no further.)

Writing the album was intimate. Tom drafted the nucleus of a song on an unplugged electric guitar and brought it over to Evan’s apartment, where the pair sat in his bedroom, placing percussive beats from a drum machine under nascent melodies, passing a bass back and forth, adding organs and bridges where necessary. “It’s computer music trying extremely hard not to sound like computer music,” Tom jokes. Fearful that limited and expensive studio time would kneecap the project creatively, eroding their charming naivete, the pair re-recorded the album in a storage space owned by Evan’s boss. Ornamentation through collaboration followed: there’s Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel in the Go-Betweens’ “Cattle and Cane”-channeling interlude “Patience Wearing Thin,” Eliza Niemi on cello (“18 Cigarettes,” a song loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”), and backing harmonies from Carpark labelmates The Beths (on an ode to friendship at a distance, “How Lonely Are You?,” “Always There,” and on the sped-up Syd Barrett stylings of “Under The Rolling Moon.”) While in his native Australia due to covid-19, Evan worked closely with producer James Cecil (The Goon Sax, Architecture in Helsinki) on Modern Fiction’s finishing touches—at one point, in the mountains of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, recorded a string quartet (featured on “Fit to Burst,” “Always There,” “Sullen Leering Hope,” “Twere Ever Thus,” “Grand Final Day.”)

It’s danceable, depressive fun, with some relief: in “Always There” and “Sullen Leering Hope,” Modern Fiction’s faithful heart. “There’s a tendency in my writing, because of my world view, to be very bleak.” Tom explains. “A quality I don’t always see in myself and really appreciate in others is the courage to go on.” And yet, the record manages resiliency—enough for pop fans to fall in love with.

The Underground Youth is a Manchester-born, Berlin-based group led by Craig Dyer that, on March 12th 2021, will release their tenth album, 'The Falling', via Fuzz Club Records. The new full-length sees Craig and band trade their acerbic post-punk melancholy for a more refined and stripped-back sound that, instead, enters the world of romantic, shadowy folk-noir. A marked departure from the primal intensity often heard on the band's previous work, 'The Falling' showcases a softer, more cinematic musical landscape shaped by acoustic guitars, piano, accordion and a heavy presence of violin and string arrangements. It's not just the instrumentation and atmospherics that have undergone a transformation on this record, it is also Craig's most sincere and introspective work to date. "Lyrically this album finds me at my most honest and autobiographical. I still shroud the reality of what I have written within something of a fictional setting, but the honesty and the romance that shines throughout the record is more sincere than it has been in my previous work. The idea was to strip back the band to allow for lyrical breathing space", Craig reflects on the album. With the original plans of heading into the studio upon their return from their 2020 USA tour grinding to a halt - the tour cancelled midway through due to the Covid-19 outbreak and followed by months of isolation in their Berlin apartments - the album is also very much a product of the distressing and unfamiliar world we now find ourselves in. As a result of the pandemic, 'The Falling' was recorded between Craig and guitarist/producer Leo Kaage's apartments-turned-home-studios (also in the band is Craig's wife, the artist Olya Dyer, and Max James, who formerly played in Johnny Marr's live band): "The album sees me going back to my writing approach from our earliest records, writing the demos as stripped back acoustic tracks at home. What started out as a set of romantic and deeply personal songs also took on the surrounding frustrations and feelings towards the situation we found ourselves in. Born from the heartbreak of how the worldwide pandemic has changed the industry we were thriving within, this album also functions as a love letter to the past." LP on 180g transparent red vinyl.

When Linda Smith Purchased A 4 Track Cassette Recorder In The Mid-1980s, It Was Not With The Intention Of Launching A Solo Career. At The Time, She Was Playing Guitar In A Band Called The Woods, And Thought It Would Be Useful For Sharing Demos With Her Bandmates. In The End, The 4 Track Outlasted The Woods, But Smith Had Already Started Toying Around With Her Own Songs. The New Hobby Followed Her From New York Back To Her Native Baltimore, And Over The Next Decade She'd Release Several Albums Worth Of Delicate, Bewitching Solo Music On Cassette. Till Another Time: 1988-1996 Is The First Retrospective Collection Of Smith's Charmingly Lo-Fi Music, Situating Her As A Pioneer Of The Home Recording Boom That Persists Today.Sparse And Gentle, Linda's Music Is Tinged With Lovelorn Melancholy Despite The Sweetness Of Her Voice. Over '60s Pop-Indebted Melodies On Tracks Like 'A Crumb Of Your Affection', She Delivers Observations Like "I'd Been So Hungry For So Long, I'd Forgotten How To Eat" With An Earnest Softness. Ready for take-off: Brazilian psychedelic quartet Os Barbapapas will release their first record DooWooDooWoo on 30rd April. Berlin-based record label Fun In The Church celebrates an LP release perfectly in line with their motto “Outernational Music For Interplanetary People”: DooWooDooWoo by Os Barbapapas will be the international debut of a highly talented band straight from the hip psychedelic scene in São. São Paulo meets Berlin – contemporary interplanetary diplomacy at its best. The result is a wondrous trip propelling us into outer space, to a lyrically unmanned space station where instrumental needles pierce the membrane of our planetary horizon, making way for a holistic psychedelic experience of our world.
Our tour guides are Barbara Mucciollo (Drums, Percussion), Selva
Rubens (Electric Guitar), Fernando Lima (Percussion, Drums) and Tomás Oliveira (Glass Harp, Bass), who is also responsible for production and mix. In times like these, producing a record like DooWooDooWoo is not a trivial thing at all, especially in Brazil, where Covid struck hard. The four artists had to improvise: since the initial plan to record an album in a studio was made impossible, the already drafted songs where postponed in favor of a new concept. Everyone recorded ideas for themselves, to which the others would contribute their tracks later, eventually building the 13 track-long interstellar journey that is the album. Collective improvisation chronologically untangled.
Though DooWooDooWoo was created in physical distance, the LP still became a 25-minute-long monument to the extraordinary vibe of the band. Its unpretentious and playful sound can only originate from the natural bond of those who speak the same musical language. And while listening to the first bars of the album and asking oneself if this could also be The Residents or Hermeto Pascoal producing Khruangbin’s next record, one has already been befallen by the spell of the four Brazilian mages. At the very latest, the third song “Sanga” will draw in even the most reluctant sceptic, when Selva Rubens sounds his self-made pot guitar. Welcome to the desert jungle.
Here, Tropicália meets exotica. Space meets desert. Surf meets western. The evoked visions maintain their wonder throughout the whole album, supported by the varied rhythms of the two drummers Mucciollo and Lima, who alternate skillfully between funky grooves, electronic sounds and classic percussion patterns, awarding the album a continuous flow. Brought together with Oliveira’s science-fiction sounds produced by his Glass Harp and the absence of vocals, they unfold a hypnotizing force that seems to slow down time. This unique sound is glued together by Selva Rubens’ guitar, always present with twangy melodies and reverberating harmonies. That way, Os Barbapapas weave us a sound that could only have been created in the cultural melting pot that is São Paulo. All the more exciting that Fun In The Church will deliver us that sound on vinyl.
The recording process has been a lifeline to the four Brazilians in Covid-induced isolation. Tomás Oliveira writes: “It’s been a great source of good mental health and daydreams”. This feeling perforates the music. And sounds truly outernational!

Multi-talented US punk, Jeff Rosenstock releases fourth album on Specialist Subject Records (UK /eu) & Polyvinyl (Worldwide)! NO Dream comes at a time of unparalleled chaos and confusion, division and despair, the depths of which would have been impossible to predict when much of it was being written over the course of the last few years. And yet the record feels prescient, unexpectedly and uniquely suited for this moment. Newly settled in Los Angeles after a lifetime on the East Coast (namely Brooklyn by way of Long Island), Rosenstock recorded NO Dream with Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Hard Girls, Joyce Manor) at Oakland's Atomic Garden, and even took on mixing duties alongside Shirley for the first time. Opting to stay off the computer "even more than usual" and record to tape with outboard gear, the result is a lived-in sound that gives each song its own individual voice and organic energy. After building a cult following with the acerbic ska-punk of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches and DIY heroics of Bomb the Music Industry!, Rosenstock's first proper solo record, 2015's We Cool?, was a step into uncharted territory, fully untethered from genre and expectation. Followed by 2016's Worry. and the surprise New Year's Day launch of Post- in the early hours of 2018, Rosenstock was facing down that least punk of opportunities: a career playing music. Having taken some time away from his work as a solo artist to recalibrate and reset over the last year, Rosenstock stayed busy playing alongside Mikey Erg, recording and touring with the Bruce Lee Band, releasing a Neil Young covers record with frequent collaborator Laura Stevenson, reissuing two of his own out-of-print early albums, compiling a live album which was recorded during a run of four sold-out shows at Bowery Ballroom, making a 76 page photo book, and scoring over 80 episodes of the Cartoon Network series Craig of the Creek. Summer Cannibals fourth album Cant Tell Me No is a defiant release whose very existence is the result of taking back power. After escaping a manipulative personal and creative relationship, guitarist/vocalist Jessica Boudreaux chose to scrap an entire record that had been finished for over a year and start from scratch. Along with Cassi Blum, Devin Shirley and Ethan Butman, Boudreaux wrote, recorded and mixed many of the new tracks during 14-hour days, emerging with the Portland, OR band's first entirely self-engineered and produced album. The Cannibals formed in 2012 and gained a fervent following on the local Portland scene, eventually playing with some their musical heroes including L7, Mudhoney, Stephen Malkmus and The War on Drugs, and touring with Ted Leo & the Pharmacists and Cursive. Along the way, they released 2013s No Makeup and 2015s Show Us Your Mind on their own label, New Moss Records, and 2016s Full Of It on Kill Rock Stars. Show Us Your Mind appeared on NPRs Sound Opinions Best of list in 2015, and Pitchfork said that on Full Of It, the Cannibals expertly balance flame-belching Mad Max riffage with lyrics frankly exploring questions of co-dependence and need. Cant Tell Me No is, as much as anything, about finding love and acceptance on the other side of pain. On a larger scale, the album stands up not just to a relationship or an industry, but to the people and constructs that have been trying to silence women and hold them down for so long. Its about doing the right thing, says Boudreaux, even when its terrifying.

Manila Ice showcases Eyedress's unique talent for lovesick composition and songwriting, and his DIY spirit. The album was recorded around the birth of his first child and represents the hopes and fears of a young parent as well as providing him an escape from the realities of his personal life and the dramatic political events unfolding in his home city. He recorded and produced the entire album from his bedroom studio at his parents house - playing lead and rhythm guitar, bass, synths, samplers, drums alongside singing and rapping.

His music is informed by the diverse influences of his early life in Phoenix, Arizona and San Clemente, California followed by his family’s return to The Philippines aged 15. Taking to sampling and beat making as much as traditional musicianship, his thirst for expression has seen him turn his unique voice to rap, punk, synth pop and lo-fi indie styles. On Manila Ice he strips his experimentation back to a more traditional songwriting, and brings a striking honesty to the narratives which weave through the record.

Formed in London in 1977 by Mark Perry and Alex Fergusson, then editors of the punk fanzine Sniffin' Glue, Alternative TV was a post-punk group known for incorporating reggae rhythms and pushing the boundaries of the definition of punk toward the experimental and avant-garde. Their first album, The Image Has Cracked, came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of the era.
