"Jeff Goldblum takes a deep breath and initiates the teleportation sequence, unaware that lurking in the corner of the telepod are three greasy eighth grade boys quoting their favorite lines from Kids In The Hall sketches. The sequence initiates; a crack of static; a horrible flash of white hot light. Dramatically backlit and shrouded in fog, what emerges from the adjacent telepod is not so much man-child as teenage lobotomy. The camera jumps to a tight shot on the receding hairlines of three dumb assholes: “Look out world…” they whisper with an off-putting wink into the camera. “I’m eatin’ Arby’s.”

This is the Citric Dummies and that is a reference to their song lyrics! Yes, you do not have to ask: this shit is dumb. Lyrics like “I'm driving a piece of shit because I am a piece of shit” dumb. I hear fear in their voices: this is both a reference to Lee Ving’s phlegm and the fact this band is naked and lost in a parking garage, “A traffic cone used for modesty (It’s not a giant orange dick, you see)”. But unlike Fear, this band does not hate you, for they are too busy hating themselves. “Fuck you!” you yell at them, and they know why.

When you see these Citric Dummies (and oh, you simply must!), you will notice their jackets—matching in satin, unique in color. A bassist in green satin, like a lime, and bald (not unlike a lime…). Guitarist? In lemon yellow; he has a regular amount of hair. And that drummer on the drums, the one with the most hair of all? Orange! What we have here is a band who visually tastes like an orange 7Up if such a dumb thing were a thing.

And this band plays: fast! Fuck! Live, it’s fast-as-fuck-oh-fuck-this-is-fast. Dean Dirg is there playing fast, and The Hives, because we love the Hives and know their roots are of the same raw Swedish garage milieu as the Hellacopters and Henry Fiat's Open Sore. “It’s too rock ‘n roll for hardcore, too hardcore for rock ‘n roll,” you may say (because you yourself may be dumb). Is this what is called…punk? Yes! That’s it! Maybe this is punk, you dumbass.

Her music is intentionally situated at specific and strange intersections, incorporating elements of power electronics, death industrial, and black metal alongside baroque classical, spiritual minimalism and folk. Relentless intensity and soaring dramatic arcs are informed by Hayter's background in classical music, and the major sonic locus of the project is her voice, a dynamic entity that rushes from unhinged screaming to lilting soprano to angular belting with an artistry and ferocity that has drawn comparisons to Diamanda Galas. She is notorious for confrontational live performances that can leave an audience breathless or in tears.Hayter began classical training at the age of ten with intent to pursue an operatic conservatory track. Instead she developed an interdisciplinary fine arts practice at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “This album [sorcs 80] was a self imposed ambitious project for us [osees]. Something to kick in the creative flow. The last few years, having been a challenging time in general, felt like a good time for a pivot. The last two albums were so guitar and keyboard centric, I wanted a weird and fun set of parameters for us to work with. I demo’d everything at home on cassette four track (harkening back to simpler times) using drum loops, and just had at it ’til I had a pile of ‘songs.’

“Tom [Dolas] and I chose one sound each using synths and created a range of three octaves of that sample, then loaded them into Roland Spd-sx samplers and learned the transcribed songs using drum sticks. The idea was to change the way we wrote and to have four people along the front of the stage essentially playing percussion. So no guitar, no keys.

“As we were recording I kept thinking how the sounds, when paired up, sounded a bit like brass. So, we added a saxophone horn section to round out the horniness of the sound with a bit of reedy bell tones. Thanks to Cansfis Foote and Brad Caulkins on tenor and baritone saxophones.

“Sort of a Dexy’s Midnight Runners meets Von LMO meets The Flesh Eaters meets the Screamers kinda punk junk. Poppy and hooky, heavy at times. Sort of vacuous and maybe a bit sci-fi in sound. Boneheaded in riff and heady in lyrics. Recorded at Stu-Stu-Studio by me on eight track 1/4-inch tape. So pretty hot and raw. Lots to write about today. A lot of these lyrics were taken from things people said in passing about taking on life right now that stuck with me. Things that made me reflect. Things that made me laugh. Things that made me WTF. Some folks are kind, genuine and give you love and energy. Some are greedy manipulative ghouls who hang off your veins. You must be strong, composed and take care of yourself. Be self aware and check your mind for cracks. Learn to relax and be well. There are moments of beauty and redemption. It’s not all bad news and there’s always hope. One summer my dad gifted me a number of graphic novels that were translated and heavily adapted versions of classic Chinese novels for young readers; Journey To The West and Outlaws Of The Marsh were my favorites. The vast casts of characters, mythical adventures, and humorous situations that take place in these historical settings allowed me to connect to a culture of mine I always had a hard time accessing. Feral Child’s 50th release is an absolute gem; housed in a beautiful 70s styled disco bag- it sees a 12” collaboration between longterm label favourites, Studio Kosmische from the UK and Cloud Canyons from Italy. A killer double A side featuring a reworking by SK of “Under Neon Stars” (from Cloud Canyons’ great 2023 debut album “Dreaming Of Horses Running In Circles”) which adds to the original versions’ relentless motorik pulse, by adding a few parts and alchemically blending the original elements of the song; the slowbuilding ethereal female vocals, the multilayers of monophonic analogue synths- moulding a shrouding and lilting veil on the 9 minute long original. Side B features a brand new track, “Black Fruit”, which also sprung from the creative dialogue between the two bands and also clocks in at around 9 minutes, side-long. Born as an instrumental piece by Studio Kosmische, “Black Fruit” developed into a full song thanks to the vocal additions by Michelle Cristofori, Laura Storchi and Stella Baraldi (Cloud Canyons’ singers) and a rich yet minimalistic array of instrumental parts by Studio Kosmische’s Dom Keen, who ingeniously shaped the keys harmonies and rhythmic textures around the vocal lines. Accomplished by some subtle electronic treatment by Cloud Canyons’ Nicola Caleffi, “Black Fruit” ideally complements “Under Neon Stars” as a two-sided creature, hanging somewhere between krautrock and electronica.

Next up on North London’s Feral Child label, comes an absolute cracker. A longterm favourite @ label HQ, the great Dewey Mahood’s Plankton WAT project releases a new record, “Corridors” as a super limited, hand numbered, coloured wax LP with Feral Child this July. Plankton Wat began as a home studio recording project by Portland, OR musician Dewey Mahood in the early 2000's. The playful band name was inspired by Popol Vuh; and combines the names of Krautrock producer Conny Plank and bassist Mike Watt. Mahood made several low key albums on various formats for obscure underground labels, and played occasional solo guitar gigs around the West Coast. Due to the popularity of his experimental psych rock band Eternal Tapestry, Plankton Wat signed to legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey in 2011. The album “Spirits” came out the following year, and this began the ongoing musical partnership with fellow Portland musician Dustin Dybvig aka Brass Clouds. Mahood and Dybvig also did the funk dub band Edibles, the short lived psych punk band Spectrum Control, and most recently were the rhythm section for Ripley Johnson's Rose City Band. It was while on tour in the UK with RCB that Mahood started revisiting early 1980s post punk such as New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Cocteau Twins, a sound and attitude that became the foundation for the new album “Corridors”. Mahood played guitar and bass, and added a touch of synth and drum machine, and Dybvig played several beautiful solos using synth and piano. The songs are a continuation of ideas first heard on “Future Times” (Thrill Jockey, 2021), but are further refined into concise, compact musical statements reflecting on climate change (ice storms, record high temps, the changing coastline, the impact on trees, the importance of water, etc). Another wonderful addition to Dewey | PWs’ already formidable canon of work, this one won’t hang around long. To be upfront, the label is retreating more and more into the world of self distro’d small runs with UK stores seemingly only now bothered by variations on Taylor Swift records. God bless her….!

I discovered Natalie Sweet from Lord Rutledge at Faster & Louder. He had my 1st LP “Extra Credit” #3 on his 2019 Best of. Right behind...Natalie Sweet and Pale Lips. I loved Natalie’s 1st LP and when she posted online about wanting to collaborate with different people I jumped at the chance. I’ve always wanted to collaborate with someone outside the usual crew and it was a great chance to do so. Natalie sent me her idea for “Second Time” just her singing the song on her phone and I thought even in it’s primitive state that it had a great hook and she had something there. We collaborated on that one with me adding some lyrics and a bridge. At this time I had recently started writing “Over My Head” and presented it to Natalie who did a great job coming up with a female point of view in the song and adding lyrics that really helped the song tell a story and pushed it forward. I’m very excited about this release- it was a blast creating these songs with Natalie and bringing them to life with two old buddys Craig Sala on drums and Kris Rodgers on keys! The two tracks were expertley mixed by Mike Kennerty ( All American Rejects, Screeching Weasel) and mastered by Justin Perkins. Big thanks to Jamie at Reta Records for putting this release together and to my longtime friend and label boss Malibu Lou for bringing Rum Bar Records on board for this great release! -- Brad Marino, Rochester NH

The hardest working band in punk rock, The Fleshtones, return with "Festa di Frankenstein" and "The Dedication Song," two anthemic tunes done in the band's inimitable "Super Rock" style that they've been championing since 1976. The former is a haunted hip-shaker about a party at the Frankenstein residence (sung entirely in Italian!) and the latter is frontman Peter Zaremba saluting all of the bands across the USA who influenced them and continue to play the gin joints and dive bars to this day. "The Dedication Song" was originally a hit by the great Freddy Cannon back in 1966, whereas the Fleshtones' brand new rendition serves as a sequel to their smash hit "American Beat" that put them on the map over four decades ago. "Festa di Frankenstein" is a reworking of the under-appreciated Halloween track "Frankenstein's Party" by the Swinging Phillies from 1967. While the original recording is a soulful horn-filled tune, the Fleshtones' version is a far grittier recording that will be a staple of all garage rock Halloween hootenannies to come. Both songs are pressed on a 45 single that is limited to 500 copies worldwide. This is a one-time only pressing!
