Barrie Lindsay is a soft spoken, obsessive producer and songwriter who grew up tinkering with instruments in Ipswich, Massachusetts. After graduating from Wesleyan in 2012 with a degree in music, Lindsay formed her first band with her brother, a 5-piece group called Grammar. She spent her 20's quietly making music in Boston and working at a sculpture studio until she was discovered on Soundcloud by a manager who encouraged her to move to Brooklyn and pursue a career in music by forming a band. Lindsay obliged and soon Barrie, the 5-piece band, was born. After a number of successful singles, Barrie released their debut in 2019, Happy To Be Here, earning buzzy press, TV syncs, and new fans around the globe. A month after Happy To Be Here came out, the band parted ways and Lindsay reintroduced Barrie as a solo project. In the two years since then, the 32-year old suffered the loss of a parent, and married her wife, Gabby. While Lindsay has maintained a separation between her personal feelings and lyricism inprevious works, she allowed herself to find catharsis in songamidst the intense love and grief she was experiencing. One night during a moment of grief, Lindsay couldn't bring herself to set up the mic properly in her studio. Instead, she opted to shout across the room in a true "fuck-it" moment. Liking the effect this produced, she decided to stick with it, yielding "Dig," a self-produced single featuring an impressionistic slew of slide guitar, dulcimer, and mandolin. You can hear her newfound sense of boldness, as she wails the song's central refrain, giving herself over to emotion: "I can't get enough of you / Where did you come from?" Whereas "Dig" floats in a seeming free-time, Barrie's second single, "Frankie," is locked into a driving, propulsive rhythm. Its bass synth, which remains constant throughout, is meditative and hypnotic. Among skittering arpeggios and melodic hooks, the song's message asks listeners to consider capitalism. Political pop can be awkward, but Lindsay's is subtle and poignan...

Spice singer Ross Farrar speaks of the band's ambition to forge a sort of aesthetic patois: a mode of expression as strikingly regional as it is recognizable. Last year's self-titled debut, released in the depths of the pandemic, fully achieved this goal, distilling decades of North Bay punk and post-hardcore into an urgent, artful set of emotive unrest. Their latest single, A Better Treatment b/w Everyone Gets In, further refines the group's singular mix of weathered melody and abrasive poetics, equal parts bracing, bruised, and cryptic. "A Better Treatment" began as a song about a friend who died but through the turmoil of collaboration transformed into something more macroscopic and opaque, blurring the boundary between hopeful and defeated ("I thought loving someone would cure my self-hatred"). Bass and drums build against walls of guitar while the violin threads its own melancholy within the noise; Farrar is blunt about the intention: "The violin is an instrument of death you know." "Everyone Gets In" is both poppier and more pained, an anthem for angst aging into the reverie of regret: "We lose our strength / along the way / we lose each other / the funeral sways." The tempo sways too, gradually slowing to an anxious crawl before finally revving back into a storm of shimmering guitar and splashing drums, fighting against the dying of the light. It's music of raw truths and rejected pedestals, storied but unswerving, a revolt against the great regress: "and my / my time is spent / adoring seasons / that I / I never should've."

During a weekend stop-over in her hometown of Olympia, Kendl stopped in at Dub Narcotic to record this 7" that features Kendl, Joe Capoccia on bass, and Austin Cooper on Drums. Selector Dub Narcotic created a remix for the B Side of the album called "The Same Version," and both sides together create the perfect little snack pack to hold us over until she releases her next full-length! Your phone, your TV, your computer - who (or what) is watching you? It's an oft-asked question in the digital age, and one that The Paranoyds echoed when it comes to the origins of their name. Part of a generation immersed in oversharing and ease of surveillance, The Paranoyds know better than anyone, it's scary out there. But the band's fearless pursuit of a good time won't stop them from crafting the kind of gritty, Southern California garage rock that refuses to hide.

The Paranoyds' debut release on Suicide Squeeze offers a taste of what The Paranoyds have been crafting. The Los Angeles four-piece of Laila Hashemi (keyboardist-vocals), Lexi Funston (guitars/vocals),Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) and David Ruiz (drums, vocals) share a mission to craft songs with the gritty spunk and dark playfulness of a cult-classic splatter film. "Hungry Sam" is a binge-worthy feast of chugging guitars and belly-rounded drums. B-side "Trade Our Sins" is a cautionary slowdance fit for the end of the night or the end of the world. Their self-described "sister vocal act" shares the snarling, over-it-but-totally-into-it vocals throughout their songs, moving from dirty surf-pop guitar jams to power-packed garage rock.

George W. Bush. Cormac McCarthy novels. Chainsaw massacres. Texas has a reputation for being a grim place. Sure, there's the rock n' roll haven of Austin, the metropolitan hubs of Dallas and Houston, and the weird art commune of Marfa. But by and large, it's a land of dry counties and conservatism. Which makes the demented psych garage of Lubbock's the Numerators all the more compelling. Northeastern Texas is perhaps the most inhospitable region of the state for a young band of misfits to combine a love of David Lynch's twisted take on the 50s with a requisite dash of Lone Star homage to 13th Floor Elevators, yet somehow the Numerators have managed to thrive under such stark conditions. Now based in Brooklyn, the trio continues to belt out their hallucinatory brand of reverb-drenched garage rock on their latest single for Suicide Squeeze.
