before michael yonkers would revise the history of recorded music with the clarion chords of microminiature love, he was in a band called michael and the mumbles, and they made this self-titled LP in 1966. in the premiere spin, their would-be debut comes off as a naive, teenage trip thru the typified garage band moves of this era. but repeated listening reveals a darkness beneath what some dullard might be deceived by as it's crisp, winsome visage. it's only to a slightly less visible degree that the mumbles LP has the same characteristics that would make micro the singularly original piece that is; it's emotionally bleak themes, dissonant undercurrents, and recklessly wild performance. so, once again we have a michael yonkers LP that is going to turn yr world upside down, make the college girls scream and leave you wondering how many more times this can happen. seriously, pigeon falls up here looked like a riot on the sunset strip. indulge yrself. ps. michael and the mumbles is on the king of all known formats (with a digital download coupon, natch) only, the mastertapes used herein are 45 yrs old and aside from the glitch on "cold town", they sound as good as they could and yr not going to have any trouble embracing their magic.

This is complicated, and largely made up, so pay attention. Joe Pernice is a recording artist, who, once upon a time, had a multi-dollar deal with Sub Pop as a member of the bands SCUD MOUNTAIN BOYS and THE PERNICE BROTHERS. This was before you were born. After a mutual parting of the ways between label and artist, he started his own record label and continued to record under various noms de plume. He also became a novelist, and his first novel, "It Feels So Good When I Stop" will be published by Riverhead Books in August 2009. In said book, the narrator, who is not Joe, is in a band called THE YOUNG ACCUSER for a short time. After the fictional narrator leaves this fictional band, they record a fictional song called "Black Smoke (No Pope)" and send it to the non-fictional Sub Pop. This is the non-fiction version of that fictional single. Of interest may be the fact that a cover of an even earlier, more fictional "Black Smoke (No Pope)" was recorded by the non-fictional Joe Pernice and appears on the non-fictional companion CD to his novel. That CD is called "It Feels So Good When I Stop (Soundtrack)" and it will be released on his Ashmont Records, also in August 2009.

This was unexpected. Citay's 2007 album Little Kingdom made reference to everything from Thin Lizzy and acoustic Led Zeppelin, to Popul Vuh and early Mike Oldfield. So, when theband started asking remixers to rework tracks from Little Kingdom, we were more than a little surprised. As it turns out, the world needs Citay's Remixes. From the ambient textures of White Rainbows' "Eye on Dollar" remix to Cornershop'sAnthony Saffery adding sitar and percussion to "First Fantasy," these are anything but typical remix rave-ups. First European vinyl 45 release on Munster Records, featuring the guitar of Deniz Tek. Inspired by artists such as Etta James and Julie London, Lizzie sang a sultry Jazz set around the traps in Sydney. Enthralling fans with her riveting stage presence and seductive voice, around late 2007, she teamed up with Deniz Tek to pursue a lifelong love of Soul music. Deniz's hard rocking background with Radio Birdman is well known. In recent years he has also worked with Scott Morgan, soul shouter from Detroit's Rationals. Together they performed numbers like Otis Redding's 'Respect' and Johnnie Taylor's 'Hijackin' Love' to crazed audiences across the USA. Lizzie and Deniz hammered together a number of songs, with a cover of Aretha Franklin's aby I Love You and the original iece O Me' making the final selection for their initial vinyl release. Recorded at Maple Studios in Santa Ana, California by the band and producer Sergio Chavez (Motörhead, Helmet) and mixed by Andrew Alekel (Foo Fighters, Danzig), "Signs of Infinite Power" could well be dubbed "a reawakening" of Fu Manchu as the record delivers monstrous doses of the group's punk energy, hard rock drive and psychedelic crunch in spades. Man Of Aran is a British Sea Power soundtrack to proto-documentarian Robert Flaherty"s 1934 film.*Available on Vinyl for the first time, this initial first pressing will be on Yellow and Blue Vinyl.In 2009 the band, then known as British Sea Power, were commissioned by the Edinburgh Film Festival to create their own soundtrack for the 1934 quasi-documentary, which they premiered by playing along live during a screening at the event. A studio version of the album followed in May the same year, while more screening/performances took place at the BFI in London and at cinemas in Brighton and Sheffield, while events were also staged on a series of islands, including Jersey, the Hebrides and a Norwegian islet in the Arctic Circle. Charting the activities of fisherman based on a remote outcrop in mouth of Galway Bay in western Ireland, Man Of Aran captured a disappearing way of life as Aran"s inhabitants battled daily against the elements to survive, something that chimed deeply with Sea Power"s own curiosity for the past and their urgent, environmentally-driven concerns for the future. The film is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release. The film was created from half a million feet of film shot by Flaherty while living closely with the islanders. But Man Of Aran isn"t a straightforward documentary. The "family" at the centre of the film weren"t related, rather a group of islanders cast as the family unit by Flaherty. The fishing expedition for basking sharks which forms the film"s dramatic heart was based around methods that hadn"t been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Blending reality and staged elements, Flaherty arrived at a compelling document that captures the elemental power of the island"s past and present. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1935 Venice Film Festival and the eminent film critic Pauline Kael described it as, "The greatest film tribute to man"s str...
