Next up on North London’s Feral Child label, comes an absolute cracker. A longterm favourite @ label HQ, the great Dewey Mahood’s Plankton WAT project releases a new record, “Corridors” as a super limited, hand numbered, coloured wax LP with Feral Child this July. Plankton Wat began as a home studio recording project by Portland, OR musician Dewey Mahood in the early 2000's. The playful band name was inspired by Popol Vuh; and combines the names of Krautrock producer Conny Plank and bassist Mike Watt. Mahood made several low key albums on various formats for obscure underground labels, and played occasional solo guitar gigs around the West Coast. Due to the popularity of his experimental psych rock band Eternal Tapestry, Plankton Wat signed to legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey in 2011. The album “Spirits” came out the following year, and this began the ongoing musical partnership with fellow Portland musician Dustin Dybvig aka Brass Clouds. Mahood and Dybvig also did the funk dub band Edibles, the short lived psych punk band Spectrum Control, and most recently were the rhythm section for Ripley Johnson's Rose City Band. It was while on tour in the UK with RCB that Mahood started revisiting early 1980s post punk such as New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Cocteau Twins, a sound and attitude that became the foundation for the new album “Corridors”. Mahood played guitar and bass, and added a touch of synth and drum machine, and Dybvig played several beautiful solos using synth and piano. The songs are a continuation of ideas first heard on “Future Times” (Thrill Jockey, 2021), but are further refined into concise, compact musical statements reflecting on climate change (ice storms, record high temps, the changing coastline, the impact on trees, the importance of water, etc). Another wonderful addition to Dewey | PWs’ already formidable canon of work, this one won’t hang around long. To be upfront, the label is retreating more and more into the world of self distro’d small runs with UK stores seemingly only now bothered by variations on Taylor Swift records. God bless her….!

Like an unsent love letter to a psychedelic London where everyone is trying to find their way to a secret Television Personalities gig, Cuneiform Tabs emerge with an astounding debut of lo-fi pop and DIY experimentation. A hazy collage of joyful heartaches, twisted children’s TV themes and sing-song melodies, the album echoes the sounds of ’60s AM radio from a dozen narrow alleyways to the North. Over 18 months, the Tabs’ Matt Bieyle and Sterling Mackinnon traded 4-track tapes between the Bay Area and the UK. While they previously played together in indie band Violent Change, the duo’s physical distance and their songwriti ng process of building, blurring and distorting across the Atlantic would create something no one saw coming. Grabbing any instruments at their disposal and splitting vocal duties, Bieyle and Mackinnon pushed their Tascam to its limit to make glittering, odd-shaped gems. There is an insular feel to Cuneiform Tabs, suited for late nights after the entire city has stumbled into dreamtime or lazy afternoons when you can’t quite recall where you need to be, but you know you won’t make it there on time. It’s like a pirate radio show where Bob Pollard alternates Swell Maps and Cleaners From Venus records while randomly unplugging various bits of gear and reading passages from a book on R.D. Laing. Originally released in a hyper-limited artist edition, W.25TH / Superior Viaduct is thrilled to bring this kaleidoscopic LP to a wider audience.

Ranked as one of the most memorable of the so-called “punk poets” he first debuted in 1977 and has become known for his unique combination of punk outrage with a streak of optimism. Originally writing the song “Punch” in 1980, shortly after Margaret Thatcher had been elected Prime Minister of Great Britain, Fitzgerald had this to say about the song; “At the time that the song was written, it seemed like the worst type of person to be in charge of a country would be a right wing monster like Margaret Thatcher or a dangerous ex-actor / reactionary like Ronald Reagan, a bit of a joke figure, but also a gun-toting and gun promoting right wing monster. Nobody might have expected that, by the early 2020s, the world would end up in the hands of actual clowns like Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, people written off by their own public as comedy buffoons, people to laugh at but not take too seriously.”

Like the many Banded Stilts that spread across the cover of her newest album Flood, Stella Donnelly is wading into uncharted territory. Here, she finds herself discovering who she is as an artist among the flock, and how abundant one individual can be. Flood is Donnelly's record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around. Donnelly's early reflections on the relationship between the individual and the many can be traced back to her time in the rainforests of Bellingen, where she took to birdwatching as both a hobby and an escape in a borderrestricted world. By paying closer attention to the natural world around her, Donnelly recalls "I was able to lose that feeling of anyone's reaction to me. I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self." Reconnecting with this `small self' allowed Donnelly to tap into creative wells she didn't know existed. Soon songs were coming to her in a way she could not control and over the coming months, Donnelly accumulated 43 tracks as she moved out of Bellingen and around the country, often finding herself displaced due to border restrictions and a tough rental market. Though the writing of Flood was an intensely personal undertaking, Donnelly still saw the recording process as one of her most collaborative projects yet. Along with her band members, co-producing the record beside Anna Laverty and Methyl Ethyl's Jake Webb helped to foster an important spontaneity in the studio. With Webb, Donnelly could "dig in" and discover a "forward-leaning sound" she'd been searching for, while Laverty's ability to "capture the piano" and discern the "perfect take" allowed the songwriter to take risks, many of which have clearly paid off. Looking back at the Banded Stilt, Donnelly ultimately appreciates how when "seen in a crowd they create an optical illusion, but on its own it's this singular piece of art." While each song in Flood is a singular artwork unto itself, the collective shares all of Stella Donnelly in abundance: her inner child, her nurturing self, her nightmare self; all of herself has gone into the making of this record, and although it would take an ocean to fathom everything she feels, it's well worth diving in.

Virginia Beach's Turnover has never been a band afraid of telling the truth. "Ghost of Love" is backed with "Imaginary Girl," originally released via CD single in 2006 are now finally seeing their vinyl and digital release for the first time in celebration of Inland Empire's 2022 theatrical re-release. Both are signature cinematic Lynchian classics that feature Lynch on guitar and vocals, accompanied by his long-time collaborator and Sacred Bones staple Dean Hurley on bass. In the late 90's and early aughts, internet video capabilities like Real Video and Quicktime were expanding, proving the early prophecy that `anyone would be able to have their own television channel on the internet' was indeed coming true. After the critical success of Mulholland Drive, director David Lynch doubled down on the medium, funneling virtually all of his time into personally animating, filming, and scoring content for his own internet destination: davidlynch.com. It was fertile and limitless ground for a creative like Lynch, allowing him to return to the days of his experimental film roots, where it was actually possible for him to have his hands on every element of the process. It was out of this newfound digital freedom that the early seeds of Inland Empire were born, evolving and fissuring from an internet-bound experiment itself, into something much more expansive. The film collated a variety of ideas and working methods that the recent web paradigm had nurtured in Lynch, one of which was an increased frequency of his own solo music productions. Having finished constructing his own personal recording studio in 1998, he was no longer tethered to the scheduling and high premiums of rented studio time and was free to accelerate his musical experimentation without constraint. As a direct result of this was a unique shift in Lynch's musical trajectory; a shift that would eventually bear multiple albums and a short film featuring a lounge-crooning monkey. In the first weeks of 2005, Lynch would record a blues instrumental and instead of getting someone else to sing on the song, he would sing, via a formant and pitch-altering piece of equipment known as the Boss Vt-1. It was because of the davidlynch.com animated series "Dumbland" that the director had discovered the device that would enable him to be `any character he needed.' With "Ghost of Love," Lynch was experimenting with bringing those `characters' into his own musical compositions. In true Lynch fashion, it's difficult to know which inspired which: did "Ghost of Love" birth a scene in Inland Empire, or did the film's ideas birth the song? Just as "In Heaven" had served to encapsulate Eraserhead, "Ghost of Love" managed to encapsulate Inland Empire allowing its listener to close their eyes and immediately channel the film's images and mood onto the screen of the mind.

40 Watt Sun returns with Perfect Light; the third studio album created by Patrick Walker under the moniker. Perfect Light will be released digitally via Cappio Records, and physically via Svart Records on both CD and vinyl.

The expertly crafted, personal songs range from sparse, unaccompanied voice and guitar, through gently layered instrumentation featuring piano and delicate brush work, to moments more reflective of the warm, subtle overdrive of the band’s previous album, Wider than the Sky (2016). Like Patrick’s best work, the songs quietly build with emotion, and ache with a darkness and melancholy beauty.

Perfect Light is the first 40 Watt Sun album created without a full, formal band structure. Neben dem Originalalbum enthält die limitierte Neuausgabe fünf bis dato unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus der AIR Studios Session. Eingespielt wurden die Songs gemeinsam von Justin Vernon und Sean Carey als Duo mit Klavier und Gesang.

Das ikonische Artwork der LP und CD wurde gänzlich neu gestaltet. Statt dem ursprünglichen Aquarell des Originals ziert bei der Anniversary-Edition nun eine Blindprägung auf weißen Grund das Cover. Dazu gibt es noch ein persönliches Essay von Phoebe Bridgers über ihre Liebe zu diesem Album und wie es sie als Künstlerin geprägt hat.

Distant Populations, just the fourth full-length album of Quicksand's career, comes as a comparatively swift follow-up to Interiors--which itself came a full 22 years after its predecessor, 1995's Manic Compression. Critically lauded and deemed very much worth the wait, Interiors succeeded in reestablishing the band as the powerful and contemporary entity they had always been. Distant Populations has a punchier, more up-tempo sound than its predecessor; its 11 songs are concise, carved sonic jewels boasting not a single wasted note; and its raw power, its gripping lyricism, leaps out from the very first listening. It is a striking step up for the band. The songwriting itself had been no minor process: Following the release of Interiors, the band successfully toured around the world and in the process fully re-established their chemistry together. Looking forward to making the next album, the three of them-frontman/ guitarist Walter Schreifels, bassist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage-had methodically recorded various soundchecks, improvisations, and show rehearsals, and compiled the results. "Eventually, when it came time to make a record," Schreifels says, "we would just edit down to the ones that were most exciting to us all, and then refocus on them and see if we could recapture the magic from it." There may be a final irony in the title of Distant Populations. Practically speaking, that's precisely whom Quicksand recorded it for: Listeners very far away. Not a single one of these songs has ever been played live onstage. The band has dates on hold for the fall, notes Schreifels, and fingers are crossed Quicksand will be out there performing very soon. They will likely be the most memorable shows of the band's career.

PG.Lost need no introduction. How do you speak through a stranger? Contain multitudes. And begin to find new kinds of design in accident. True story. In September 2015 Jon Mckiel bought an old Teac A-2340, a reel-toreel tape recorder, tapes included. He exchanged a few emails with the online seller while negotiating a deal, but they never met. The first time Jon tested out the machine at home it disclosed a beautiful dream. A single tape of astounding samples from an unknown source. He nicknamed it the Royal Sampler. They began to jam together. I want to hear you speak. The tape might have been a lost demo for the games of hide and seek that accustom us to evasion. A collaboration constructed in echo. The completed songs seem to start mid-sentence, waiting a little further along the trail. Watch your step the ground gets uncertain by the bend. The maple trees in giggling fits. The shoreline no longer sure. I hear the mourning dove. Bobby Joe Hope was recorded during the summer of 2019 by Jay Crocker (of Constellation Records' JOYFULTALK, who knows a thing or two about composition methodologies involving electronic debris and surprising bric-a-brac). Under the watchful eye of Edward Snowden and a Blue Heeler named Judy, Jay and Jon transferred all the material they could excavate from the Royal Sampler along with the dialogic samples Jon had been making since that fateful September introduction. They combined these two sampled sources with the following design principle: even in the songs organized around a Jon sample, the stranger would be woven in. A shared sonic architecture. Bobby Joe Hope shares a skewed grace and tuneful ease with the work of Chris Cohen, Chad VanGaalen, or Sandro Perri. There's a masterful craft at work, and an attention to the intricate beauty of the smallest details, generous and clear. Tell me what you see. A game of hide and seek. A field wears the fog like an ancient argument. Wayward voices take shape just up ahead. Count down from 10 and be alone again. Abandoned to potential. In the green wide open. The rest belongs a mystery.
