The one-two punch of opener "I Wanna See The Sun" and "Final Sunset" lay out what's in store; Crazy Horse-inspired sandpaper melodies sit comfortably next to improvised, PSF-influenced six-string ragers. The group performs together effortlessly and telepathically, subverting the loud/quiet/loud dynamic that has saturated independent music since the late-Eighties. The loud parts and quiet parts are like waves; indistinguishable from each other, creating a fluid dynamism and intensity that swallows the listener up inits current, sweeping it toward oblivion. Hyperbole, you say? Watch out for midway through "Then The Moon" when the tune's lilting waltz pivots into a casually blistering solo by Battalene before fading into the melancholic "Haunted Eyes" -beckoning you with a mournful sidelong glance. Side Two opens with "Staggering With A Lantern", an elegant, lumbering instrumental improvisation again showcasing the synergistic shredding of the group's guitarists. 40 Watt Sun returns with Perfect Light; the third studio album created by Patrick Walker under the moniker. Perfect Light will be released digitally via Cappio Records, and physically via Svart Records on both CD and vinyl.

The expertly crafted, personal songs range from sparse, unaccompanied voice and guitar, through gently layered instrumentation featuring piano and delicate brush work, to moments more reflective of the warm, subtle overdrive of the band’s previous album, Wider than the Sky (2016). Like Patrick’s best work, the songs quietly build with emotion, and ache with a darkness and melancholy beauty.

Perfect Light is the first 40 Watt Sun album created without a full, formal band structure. During 1978 to 1980, Fashion released one album and a handful of indie club hit singles mixing Punk & Reggae vibes. They toured the US extensively supporting The Police in 1979. Limited Edition of 800 copies 2LP set with printed inner bags. All tracks completely remastered. Contains every studio recording of the first lineup of Fashion including US singles. Includes unreleased tracks. Liner notes from lead singer & Guitarist Luke Sky. Fashion went through several line-up overhauls during its initial existence between 1978 and 1984. John Mulligan (synthesiser, bass) and Dik Davis' (drums) were constants, but the band's frontman changed with each of the band's three albums. Post-punk years: Fàshiön Music Fashion was formed originally as Fàshiön Music, in Birmingham, England, in 1978, and consisted of John Mulligan (bass, synthesizer), Dik Davis (drums), and Al James (vocals, guitar). James became known as Luke Sky, or simply Luke or Lûke (short for "Luke Skyscraper" - a reference to the Star Wars character Luke Skywalker and the fact that James was tall and thin), while John Mulligan was known simply as Mulligan and Dik Davis simply as Dïk (or "Dik Mamba" on their debut single). In 1978, they also founded their own Fàshiön Music label; from this point forward, the band was generally (though not completely consistently) identified as Fashion, as distinct from the name of their self-owned label. Fashion released their first two singles ("Steady Eddie Steady" and "Citinite") as independent issues on the UK in November 1978 and June 1979 respectively. The group was quickly picked up by I.R.S., who put out a third single in the US in September 1979, "The Innocent". Their sound was varied, playing punk, post-punk and indie repertoire, although Mulligan at that time also had a synthesizer which later characterized the future synthpop years of the band. Brand new live album! A limited-edition BROWN vinyl LP put together by original founding member Pete Makowski and us at Damaged Goods to celebrate the reunion gigs by The Snivelling Shits in late 2018 and 2019.The original Snivelling Shits album 'I Can't Come' was released on Damaged Goods back in 1989 with original frontman Giovanni Dadamo supplying the tapes and helping with the artwork.We started to get to know the other two original Shits, Pete Makowski and Dave Fudger in the 2010's and Pete was very keen to "get the old band back together" as they say...so they commandeered Tom Crossley on vocals, he was in Giovanni's second band, Famous Monsters after the original Shits imploded so he was a perfect replacement, another good friend of Pete's was James Sherry (of Done Lying Down / Toast / Desperate Measures) who took over the drums, and firstly Richard Leeds from Du Bellows and later Moyni from Tom's current band The Phobics on bass duties. After a few rehearsals they did a low-key warm up gig billed as Arthur Comix, then their first proper gig at the Damaged Goods 30th anniversary gigs at The Lexington on the 15th December 2018 supporting Johnny Moped, swiftly followed by another gig at The Pelton Arms in Greenwich on the 16th February 2019. Both gigs were recorded by Lee McFadden and sounded great, so Pete suggested making a live album up to "celebrate" the events. The Shits went on to play a gloriously unhinged and chaotic set in front of a huge crowd at the Opera House at the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool in August 2019. That was the last gig as soon after the pandemic hit and very sadly and tragically, Pete Makowski died in late 2021. We're really proud to have this coming out, albeit a lot later than planned due to the vinyl shortages. It's a fitting tribute to Pete (who oversaw the artwork and tapes) and the band's amazing comeback gigs. It also includes two demos from the original line-up that appeared as a very limited 7" for sale at the Rebellion Festival show in 2019, which sold out...

Collection of non-album and unreleased songs that form a solid third lp from this New Jersey indie rock trio / RIYL: Dogbreth, Guided By Voices.Almost certainly due to hit the big 2-0-0 this year, Jigsaw has worked with a damn lot of bands! And yet, due to the facts that we don't do contracts and the bands we work with are totally free to come and go as they please, we've never really had a "proper" label roster or anything like that. But if I DID have to cobble together a list of "Jigsaw Records artists", it probably wouldn't be very long - and New Jersey's Joy Cleaner would unquestionably be front and center. Back in 2017, we were thrilled to spread the good word via their stellar debut album, "Total Hell"; and then two years later, we excitedly put out their even better second album, "You're So Jaded". During this time, the band did have a wee bit of extra-curricular activity, with a cassingle & split flexi on Are You Kidding Me? Tapes (both of which preceded their first lp) and another cassingle/7" lathe on Dromedary Records that came in between the two lps. Well, while the band is working on their third album, they've put together this odds-and-ends collection with those six afore-mentioned songs, another four that were released digitally or on compilations, and four more songs that have not yet seen the light of day! But don't be fooled - just because this is an assortment of recordings from a wide variety of dates/sources doesn't mean this isn't an excellent album in its own right. I should know - it took me over two hours to get the sequence just right, so that it both flowed together really well AND made sense as a two-sided album (an art that often gets neglected in today's realm of single-sided cd albums)! The end result is a solid third album/non-album that you can put in the same class as "Tossing Seeds", "The Question Is No" or "Fossils". Welcome home, Joy Cleaner!

Son Demon & His Holy Boys are an authentic sounding Finnish rockabilly trio founded in the middle of the winter of 2021. The band draw their influence from the traditional 1950's rockabilly music mixed with the garage sound of the early Rollin' Rock label recordings. The band is a new combo but the singer Veli-Pekka "Vellu" Lehtonen and the bass player Iikku Riepponen are no newcomers. Vellu has his roots firmly in the late 1980's psychobilly, while Iikku is known from for example Mike Bell & The Belltones among other line-ups. The band's influences stretch from a wide range of music - from classic 1950's rock 'n' roll and blues to garage rock, psychobilly and even punk, but within Son Demon & His Holy Boys they concentrate on their shared love: authentic 1950’s rockabilly.

Over luminous keys and sky-sweeping melodies, Harwood reverse engineers his capabilities as a composer skilled in the art of complexity to deliver his boldest album to date — unselfconsciously ambitious Y2K rock; a reimagination of experimental adult contemporary that tweaks the limits of soft rock with curiosity and appreciation.

On Ballad of a Tryhard Hardware conducts a painstaking character evaluation to better understand the world by looking inward. Suspended and exalting, the album bursts with cinematic flourishes that ring with a courageous form of earnestness. Because once you examine the internal toll of people-pleasing, and question if charisma has been overvalued, is there space to imagine a new reality that seeks to uplift rather than wallow — observing sparse moments of beauty and light amidst a world in constant mourning?

Crafted in Spain and co-produced with Matt Smith (Prince Nifty, Owen Pallett), Ballad of a Tryhard is a snapshot of weeks spent in Elche, a sleepy Mediterranean city on the southeast coast, wandering through emptied-out streets, becoming acquainted with the interiors of a historic apartment block, and living for the first time with a familiar love. With unlimited time on his hands, Harwood would write slowly, playing piano until dawn. The result is an album with ornate and bucolic orchestral arrangements that nod to a background in techno and house with a tangled web of synths and strings. On tracks like “Summer” (featuring members of Phedre, Lee Paradise, Whimm, Vallens, Blunt Chunks, and Jaunt) and “Love Through the Trees,” Harwood tries his hand on bouncy, heartstring ballads built for the open road, while “Watersnake” is an unstoppable earworm that makes an anthemic proposition for her own self-surety.

Prior to his solo work as Scott Hardware, Harwood played with indie rock stalwart Toronto groups like Ostrich Tuning and released ambient pop as Ken Park. A move to Berlin influenced his 2016 debut, Mutate Repeat Infinity, which centered the dancefloor as a site of queer resilience. 2020’s Engel pulled direct inspiration from Wim Wender’s 1987 haunting masterpiece Wings of Desire. In 2021 Harwood was accepted into the Slaight Family Music Lab.

Ulv! Ulv! is the fifth Ym-Stammen album, originally released to rave reviews in 1994, containing some of their most well known songs like Solbeven, Budbringere, and the epic Hevner-Kvadet. The band did extensive touring before and after the album, including tours to the Faroe Islands (as documented by Norwegian National TV), and an amazing performance at theRoskilde Festival. Ulv! Ulv! has never before been released on vinyl. The album has been remastered by Morten Lund for this re-release, and this true Norwegian masterpiece is ready to be shown to the world again.

Kevin Basko released more albums in 2019 than most artists do in their entire career. The New Jersey indie rocker released handfuls of records in the first seven years under the moniker Rubber Band Gun--not to mention producing, engineering, and performing with everyone from Eric Slick to the Lemon Twigs. But when Basko’s friend and collaborator Jonathan Rado of Foxygen quipped that he should release 25 albums in a single year, the Rubber Band Gun 25 sprang to life. And at the heart of that diverse collection of records is Cashes Out, a record that not only stands as the first vinyl release for the project, but also showcases the dazzling and dizzying heights that Rubber Band Gun psych-tinged bedroom rock can reach. As many of the albums in Basko’s big year carried unified themes, Cashes Out was written with the express idea that it would be Basko’s big leap into the conventionality of the music business. That said, rather than streamline or simplify for that pop approach, the record retains the multiplicity of ideas and tones that run through the Rubber Band Gun catalog. After opening with introspective piano, “My Time” erupts in a spray of ‘70s neon and the album never looks back. That step out of time is particularly fitting, as holing up in his home studio of Historic New Jersey has meant that Basko’s music lives in its own context rather than any particular scene or trend. “I’m more of a fish out of water, but I’m creating my own scene that is without a true geographical home base,” he explains. “In some way, that makes me very Jersey-ish because I’m not giving up despite a lack of acceptance into a certain culture.”

First Word Records is very pleased to present a brand new full-length album from Sarah Williams White! Emanating from the "hilly fields of Lewisham" in South London, Sarah Williams White is a singer songwriter, multi-

instrumentalist and producer. Her sound is a unique blend of psych-soul, folktronica and experimental synth-pop.

Sarah released her acclaimed debut album 'Of The New World' on First Word in 2015, which was written, produced and performed by Sarah from her home studio, with the assistance of drummer, engineer & husband, Timmy Rickard. Her projects have seen support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone & Chris Hawkins (bbc 6 Music), Jamie Cullum (bbc Radio 2), FIP Radio, Clash & The Guardian, to name a few, and she's toured the UK with Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Golden Rules (Lex). There have been additional collaborations with label-mate Quiet Dawn (on the 2021 compilation / EP 'A Family Affair') and with her brother, Paul White - a revered producer in his own right, with credits including Danny Brown and Sudan Archives.

Following a hiatus, Sarah now brings us her sophomore album, 'Unfathomable'. A project that offers up escapism from the mundane, enticing us to connect with our natural planet in this prevalent time, via the eyes of a new mother.

In her words, Sarah states that the album is "about escape. It's about deflating the ego by looking up to the endlessness of outer space, connecting with the greatness of mother nature, and loving how unfathomable the universe and life itself is".

11-tracks in all, including the recent singles 'Nebula', 'Green' and 'Monsters', this opus sees Sarah's buttery lathing of vocals merged with cutting beats and atypical pop sensibilities across the project, again entirely self-produced from home, defining her as one of the UK's most irresistible DIY psych-soul talents.

With a voice reminiscent of Peggy Lee, tapestried harmony akin to Hiatus Kaiyote, beats fit for Little Dragon, and experimental production evocative of Kate Bush, Sarah Williams White's signature genre-defying sound invites us into a world uniquely hers.

Melbourne auteur Andrew Wilson (Andras, A.R.T. Wilson, Wilson Tanner) soils the 'Australian songbook' with a collection of fragile, private and deranged songs of parrots, pancakes and gelignite amidst the Victorian Gold Rush of 1850s.

Old Gold is filled with fakes and fools, rumbling stomachs and acousmatic terrors - a lonely, self-pitying search evoked by faintly medieval folk music that sounds almost period-perfect but somehow, oddly, wonderfully spoiled.

Gut string guitars, water-logged mandolins, bar room banjos and no-fidelity piano all sound perfectly organic - except they're not. No acoustic instruments were handled in the making of the record, including environmental sounds which were generated during a residency at Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio. The reproduction of familiar sounds via inorganic means situates the record in a moonlit, melancholy hole of its own.

Old Gold was written, played and recorded by Andrew Wilson, and mastered by Mikey Young. Artwork is by Luca Schenardi.

Andrew Wilson has released records as Andras, A.R.T. Wilson, Berko and House Of Dad and he is one half of Wilson Tanner. His work has appeared on labels including Beats In Space, Efficient Space, Growing Bin Records, Public Possession, Dopeness Galore, Mexican Summer and his own Punp imprint.

The nightmare continues. Last summer, Pozi's 176 EP came out just as the coronavirus pandemic was offering us its first false dawn. Fast forward twelve months and another devastating wave later, we're still a disorientated, shell-shocked mess; moving once again towards normality, but with the energy-sapping tension of continued restrictions. A grimly perfect time then for the south London three-piece to return with new EP 'Typing' on Prah Recordings. The five tracks here reflect another stage in Pozi's evolution. Since coming out of the gate they've been a bristling, frenetic presence, toeing the line between dissonance and pop sensibility. As the 176 EP was a refinement of what they did on PZ1, Typing sees the trio becoming yet more comfortable in their relationship as a band and increasingly confident in how far they can push their sound. Typing isn't a lockdown record, but it has been informed by it. More importantly, though, it's yet another significant step forward from a band who've so far felt like something of an underground secret, despite being championed by BBC Radio 6 Music and in various places by contemporaries such as Sleaford Mods, Squid and Sports Team. Once restrictions do finally lift, that may no longer be the case.

"Common Crusades" is the second full-length from French Nightwatchers, and the musical and lyrical continuity of their 2019 thematic debut "La paix ou le sable". Political lyrics dealing with the conflicts rooted in France's colonial era clash with melodic, subversive, and gloomy and soundscapes throughout the tracks of "Common Crusades". An album that is as musically captivating as politically current. "Common Crusades" offers 10 melodic punk rock tracks, all contributing to the overall story and theme of the album. Fast-paced, distorted, and punchy cuts are mixed with tracks highlighting a colder and post-punk influenced side of Nightwatchers. The sound is perfectly captured by studio engineer Mathieu Zuzek. "Common Crusades" tackles the same issues that shaped Nightwatchers debut album "La paix ou le sable", but from a different perspective. Both albums deal with events surrounding France's violent colonization and exploitation of their occurred territories. While the lyrics of "La paix ou le sable" is based on excerpts taken from two historical books and written with the objective of raising awareness of France's colonial violence, "Common Crusades" mainly focuses on the aftermath of these conflicts, and how the colonial era still affects modern day France. In particular, its Muslim population. All the lyrics of "Common Crusades" are based on speeches or writings of personalities who played a role in the colonization process, as well as those who currently play a role in the perpetuation of colonial logic within the French society.
