Shiro Sano meets "skye" by Japanese rock legends Shigeru Suzuki, Ray Ohara, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Masataka Matsutoya. "album", as if it were a phantom album released in the 1970s, is now available in a limited double-LP analog edition! Shiro Sano, who continues to be active in various fields as an actor and musician, released his first album in about four years in 2023, called "Album". Following the release of his previous album "Kindan No Kajitsu" (Forbidden Fruit) in 2019, this album was produced with the members of Skye, whom Sano himself has been influenced by and respects, with Shiro Sano in charge of lyrics and composition. CARNATION's 19th original album, "Carousel Circle," released in 2023, the 40th anniversary of the group's formation, is now available in long-awaited heavy-weight analog format! Carnation is a supreme rock band that has been leading the Japanese pop rock scene for a long time since its formation in 1983. Ten songs written by Masahiro Naoe (G, Vo), plus a song by Yuzuru Ota (Ba) for the first time in the band's history, "Fukamidori", make for a total of 11 songs. Saeko Suzuki, Tomohiro Harigae, Yuko Kitayama, Jun Matsue, Takahiro Ito, Yu Taniguchi, Jacob Tanaka, and various other guests participated in the recording!

The long-awaited third album by Paulien Rondou, aka Catbug, a “farmer-songwriter” who weaves songs while running a small farm, is now available on analog LP!! The music is a legitimate successor to Judee Sill, Linda Perhacs, Vashti Bunyan, and other non-major singer-songwriter icons whose names are deeply etched in the history of music. It has been almost three years since her last album, “slapen onder een hunebed,” which captivated many listeners with its elegantly simple Dutch songs rooted in her life on the farm she runs. The album was produced and mixed by Aiko Devriendt, as was the previous album. Recording took place in a studio owned by pianist Guy Van Nuyten.

This gatefold 2xLP is a combination of the group’s only two albums, consisting of one LP of Five Tread cuts plus “Cecil Likes to Dance” a never-before-released live recording from Thistle Hall (1984) and the full 1985 LP Future Jaw-Clap. This material that has been unavailable since mid-1980s. It is well documented that in the early ‘80’s New Zealand was awash with adventurous new music. Though sharing the kind of happy isolation and the DIY ethic with contemporaneous outfits like Flying Nun, South Indies and Xpressway, one band cut a decidedly different path. The Primitive Art Group, formed in Wellington, devoted itself to collective improvisation coming out of a jazz tradition. With the line-up of Anthony Donaldson (drums), David Donaldson (bass), Neil Duncan (saxes), Stuart Porter (saxes), David Watson (guitar), and originally with Pam Grey (on cello), the group’s relatively brief existence left a lasting impression on the New Zealand’s free music scene. Musically, there was no precedent in New Zealand for their combination of noise, collective playing and compositional freedom. Gary Steel from the local music rag TOM, wrote “The first time I saw the Primitive Art Group they blew my tiny mind… Great sheets of architectural noise coming at you from the stage. Where else would you see free music in New Zealand in the early 80s? You just didn't.” The band’s five-year lifespan was non-stop activity: rehearsing, touring, the creation of Braille Records (their own record label which released ten LPs), dance and theater work, appearances at music festivals, and hosting two hugely influential national festivals of improvisation at Thistle Hall, Wellington. In 1984, Primitive Art Group spent a week making their first recording, an ambitious double LP, Five Tread (Braille 001) which had only a single pressing and sold-out locally. One year later they were back in the studio making their second album, Future Jaw-Clap (Braille 002). This outing contained tighter pieces, as the band widened its repertoire with nods to broader influences and antecedents. In 1986, The Primitive Art Group gave their last concert at the Wellington Town Hall, just a half mile from Rawa House and the legendary Thistle Hall where their first shows had taken place. The band’s Braille Records’ recordings have never been released outside of New Zealand, nor have ever been available digitally. As Thurston Moore writes, “these are magic time capsule, lost-n-found recordings, previously shared only by deep-diving record collector aesthetes”. The group’s brief tenure has continued to inspire new generations of improvisers, but nothing has ever quite matched the visceral blast of the Primitive Art Group’s arrival on the scene. Every member of the group has carried on doing creative work at the highest levels: scoring films, making art, mentoring, organizing, touring and always playing.

The album which will be launched in December with gigs at the Albert Hall in Manchester and Shepherds Bush Empire in London was inspired by Membranes’ John Robb, meeting John Incandela the head scientist from the Cern project at a TEDx talk they were both giving.

Incandela had just completed his work on the Higgs Boson particle project, and Robb became friends with him and other scientists from the project. Their conversations about the universe were mind-blowing, and the album attempted to capture these in musical form.

The band toured the album around the world, supporting The Stranglers, The Sisters Of Mercy, and Mark Lanegan, who called the Membranes one of his favourite all-time post-punk bands and said that ‘John Robb is a legend - I’m truly honored to know him’.

The Membranes were formed in Blackpool in the late seventies and were big John Peel and music press favourites with their innovative bass driven discordant Death To Trad Rock sound providing a template and influence for many bands over the years including Big Black, Mercury Rev, The Wedding Present and even the likes of the Lambchop who covered them.

John Robb is also a well-known face on TV and radio as well as running the Louder Than War music and culture website and writing best-selling books like ‘Punk Rock - An Oral History’ and ‘The Art Of Darkness - The History Of Goth. He is currently working on his mémoires and a new Membranes album.

The new edition of the album comes in revolutionary and stunning new artwork gatefold sleeve, complete with lyric sheet, and a poster of the original album cover, all of which captures its interstellar themes.
