Back in 2015, Japanese deep house pioneer Soichi Terada stepped back into the limelight courtesy of Sounds From The Far East, a Rush Hour-released, Hunee curated retrospective of material released on his Far East Recording label in the 1990s and early 2000s. Buoyed by the positive response and renewed interest in his work, Terada went back into studio to record his first new album of house music for over 25 years, Asakusa Light.

Developed over 18 months, Terada tried to recreate the mental and physical processes that led to the creation of his acclaimed earlier work. Those familiar with Terada’s celebrated, dancefloor-focused sound of the 1990s – a vibrant, atmospheric, and emotive take on deep house powered by the twin attractions of groove and melody – will find much to enjoy on Asakusa Light.

“I tried to recall my feelings 30 years ago, but when I tried it, I found it super difficult,” he explains. “I didn’t even know what I thought about myself five years ago, and the mental metabolic cycle seems to be faster than I thought. I tried different methods, including digging up my old MIDI data and composing by remembering old experiences. With the help of Rush Hour, I found some of the light from my heart that I had 30 years ago. I nicknamed the light I found in my heart, ‘Asakusa Light’.”

Produced using the very same synthesizers and drum machines that powered his 1990s work, the album is a joyous, colourful and life-affirming collection of timeless house music that not only recalls Terada’s own impeccable back catalogue, but also that of similarly celebrated contemporaries such as the Burrell Brothers or Ben Cenac (Dream 2 Science, Sha-Lor).

Terada, who has spent much of the last two decades writing video game music, has always had a gift for combining warm, undulating synthesizer basslines and perfectly programmed machine drums with stirring chords, smile-inducing melodies and mellow musical flourishes. It’s this immersive, sun-kissed and tuneful trademark style that takes centre stage on Asakusa Light, an album for the ages.

The set begins with the alien-sounding chords, soft-touch percussion and dawn-friendly warmth of ‘Silent Chord’ and ends on a high via the bouncing string stabs, starlight chords and thickset grooves of ‘Blinker’; in between, you’ll find a deluge of effortlessly feelgood music that’s the aural equivalent of a dopamine rush at sunrise.

There are subtle variations aplenty throughout the album – see the 8-bit lead lines and pulsing electronic textures of ‘Takusambient’, the vintage Tony Humphries flex of ‘Diving Into Minds’ and the effortlessly funky ‘Marimbau’ – but it’s the uniquely atmospheric, vivid and tactile nature of Terada’s loved-up sound that resonates. After well over 30 years in house music, the light in his heart is shining brighter than ever.

The release of Crosstown Rebels’ Spirits compilation is always a bastion moment for the label. The first edition came to prominence in 2017 and we’ve been graced with an annual compilation ever since, showcasing a consistent habit to champion established artists and breakthrough ones alike. Now, Crosstown Rebels’ lauded Spirits series will see the light of day once more in June, with the release of Spirits V.

NYC-native Layla Benitez leads proceedings with Fides, a progressive-leaning, introspective number that retains an inherent danceability throughout. It kicks off the compilation with a driving energy, one that’s perfectly matched by Trabajar - the Crosstown Rebels debut of recent Hot Creations inductee Mr.Diamond.

A techy-inspired cut, punchy four-four drum patterns create a distinctive late-night feel, as UK-talent Denney soon arrives with Kill The Soundboy. Showcasing the groove-laced house sound with which he’s become best known, the near seven-minute piece is sure to light up many a club setting this year, paving the way for Talk To Me. It’s a collaborative venture between Munich-based artist ASK:ME and El Muerto, with Soulfoot featuring on vocals. Retaining a vintage Detroit style, the fast-paced tempo creates a natural excitement before Romanian-born mainstay GruuvElement’s gifts us the minimal-toned Boom Room.

Building with tribal-like percussion and salsa-inspired instrumentals, it’s a playful excursion into dance music’s outer realms, paving the way for young Peruvian producer Chinonegro with My Moment. Whether it be the pluck of a guitar string or a jazzy trumpet solo, there’s an inherent authenticity to the six-minute piece, as a mid-track breakdown gives way to whispering hats and a rhythmic underlying backbone.

The penultimate offering comes from French-born, London-based regular Maglia, who serves up the enchanting Rayiys. The chirping of birds resides atop an ever-changing bassline, leaving us open and ready for the VA’s closing saga: Thanks Moon, by Spain’s I AM JAS. A heady combination of beautiful lyrical contributions combines with softly moving electronic elements, to leave us in a state of calm, inward reflection. Rounding off proceedings on a note of quietude, it reminds us of the final moments in clubland, transporting our psyche to sunrise, fond memories and everything in between.

Over a period of nineteen years, Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels has evolved into a world-renowned institution, garnering global audiences thanks to a consistent schedule of quality releases. In years since it’s earliest beginnings, the likes of Maceo Plex, Art Department, Seth Troxler, Ali Love, Mathew Jonson, Pier Bucci, Acid Pauli, Dennis Kurtel, Francesca Lombardo, Glimpse, Aphrohead, Fur Coat and a plethora of other figureheads have all found their home on the label.

Berlin talent Joplyn is next up on Crosstown Rebels making her debut release on the label titled We Will Forgive Ourselves featuring remixes from prolific producer MK and label-head Damian Lazarus. Serving up two remixes in the form of MK’s Dub and Damian Lazarus’ Re-Shape, it acts as another milestone release for the near twenty-year-old imprint. We Forgive Ourselves is the perfect musical metaphor for Joplyn’s inspiration. The track opens proceedings with elegant drum pads which are paired beautifully with quaint hi-hats. A gentle, healing vocal, followed by a deep heavy bassline creates a profound juxtaposition. Galactic-like sounds fizz in and out, fusing everything together to create a real sense of utopia that truly embodies Joplyn’s vision. Brimming with a signature MK sound right from the offset, we’re treated to six-and-a-half minutes of perfectly executed contemporary deep house. Warming, subtle and inherently groove-led, soft kicks open into Joplyn’s haunting vocal offerings before rhythmic hats coalesce alongside, forming a modern dance anthem that is sure to light up many a club setting this summer. After three EP's in his own name, and one with Moreno Ácido at Holuzam, Diogo makes his debut 12” in the Discos Extendes series with “FINALMENTE!”. In a singular appropriation of the vast legacy of rave culture, Diogo crosses, along four tracks, a certain time span between the 90's and the 2020's, with all kinds of recycling and updates that the exercise entails. Syncopated rhythmic patterns, robust basses, junglist echoes, haunted voices or celestial pads make up a revivalist sound palette, here rearticulated beyond linear structures. “Até Segunda” sets the tone in territories close to Objekt's Theme from Q in a live sound design amidst sudden disturbances and rallying hooks. Tracks 2 and 3 stand out for their plot twists: “Ponto de Não Retorno” starts with a frenetic breaky maze before get immersed in a oneiric landscape, and “What?!” progresses gently within Vancouver coordinates to be opened to a schizophrenic rawness that, from there, completely remakes the track. “Errar É Ok” is an exercise of decompression, melodically woven, with a dreamy coda pointing to nostalgic horizons. Violet closes the EP with a muscular version of “Ponto de Não Retorno”. "Finalmente!" marks for this unstable balance between familiarity and strangeness, intuitiveness and disturbance, euphoria and immersion. Tracks for the dance floor, yes, with a twist, to be rediscovered as often as you like.

Sound designer, DJ & Producer Hermanez is in constant evolution, always looking for new targets and challenges to experiment with uncommon, innovative languages through music. For his latest imaginative offering, the Belgium-based artist is teaming up with equally whimsical imprint All Day I Dream to send listeners off into sublime grooves via the Remedio EP.

The project embarks on its placid journey with ‘Alavanca,’ an intentionally introspective track complete with soft-touch percussion and vast soundscapes. This breathable atmosphere offers curative melodies and other sonic elements that lend to the idea one can experience a journey through sonic suggestion. ‘Tale of the Unexpected’ steers the project back into a more punchy, attentive direction. Slowly rising synths build over the first few minutes, before bending into the forefront with warped and winding arp effects. ‘Areia’ is yet even more lively, with woofering percussion leading the listener into deep progressions that spill out into a melodious keys-based arrangement. ‘Wutaf’ wraps up the EP with a lighthearted conclusion that reminds fans of the joyous feeling of wellness experienced in this All Day I Dream universe.

Joining forces for the first time, Radio Slave and Dustin Zahn launch their collaborative works as Radio Zahn with a set of colourful, groove-laden techno tracks inspired by the sound of mid-90s New York on Rekids this May. A dream for fans of intricate, dancefloor-friendly techno, the release showcases why Radio Slave and Dustin Zahn are two of the most consistently exciting artist in dance music.

Responsible for some of the most recognisable tracks in the genre, including ‘Grindhouse’, ‘Don’t Stop No Sleep’, ‘Another Club’, and other timeless cuts, Radio Slave aka Matt Edwards’ work with Joel Martin as Quiet Village and solo work as Rekid has received critical acclaim, and he remains one of the most in-demand and consistent remixers around.

Since the late ’90s, Zahn’s hypnotic and driving techno has consistently caught the ears of top DJs and labels worldwide, best exemplified at his legendary marathon sets at Berghain. Italian duo Night Passengers aka Nicola Loporchio and Emanuele Del Carmine serve up their first collaborative album this summer. Find A Way comes on Born just a year or so after the project was spontaneously formed during lockdown, and is a seamless nine-track instrumental fusion of soul, jazz, funk, breaks and 80s grooves.

Nicola Loporchio is also known as Nico Lahs and Cosmic Garden and is a producer with more than a decade's experience. In that time he has landed on countless influential labels with a range of EPs and EPs that take in everything from downtempo to deep house, hip hop to funk. During the lockdowns of 2020, he hooked up with fellow Italian musician Emanuele Del Carmine who has served up some fresh disco sounds in the last couple of years. They began jamming together in early 2021 and soon found they shared common ideas when it came to good time grooves. Now, that plays out across a proper full-length that is perfect for close home listening and laid back Sundays, but always with one eye on a cosy and intimate dance floor.

This most cohesive of works opens with the joyous keys of 'Moonlight Sonata' which sets an immediately romantic mood. 'Illusion' is then a golden bit of jazz-funk with warm, glowing chords and dusty broken beats that make you want to shuffle. 'Wandering' is another piece of fine musicianship with perfect interplay between the live drums, jazzy keys and cosmic leads. The title track then slows things down. It's deep, spacious and atmospheric with suggestive bass, pillowy chords and distant melodies twinkling like stars in a night sky.

'Escape On A Sunny Sunday' has a lush retro-future feel, with freeform keys racing about the scales as the cosmic leads and tight drums tie the whole track together. During 'Moments Of Insanity,' the album launches further into the cosmos on waves of radiant melody and splashy cymbals. 'Past Memories' taps into 80s nostalgia with more blurry-edged chords and natty synth sequences riding on louche drums. The heady 'On A Cloud' is a go-slow piece that invites you into a seductive jazz-funk dreamworld and lastly, Brazilian Zopelar remixes 'Illusion' into a tumbling bit of boogie-tinged house funk.

Find A Way is a vibrant work from seasoned musicians whose virtuoso playing brings every track to life in a heartwarming fashion.

Deep Sleep Robot returns with another throwback excavating some of the rare finds. The second chapter of the series, a Various Artist four-track EP, timeless cuts from the archives.

The A-side, Ronin (aka. J. Axel) the man behind several albums on PlackTown Sounds, Plastic City and Driftwood brings us "Mysterious City", classic Ronin sound here folks this being one of the first releases by the artist back in 1998. Followed by Swedish producer Johan Bacto (aka. Johan Svensson) responsible for labels such as PlackTown Sounds, Everyday, Mankind, Zync, Countdown 2000, with his "Takemountain" the combination of these creates the reunion of the tracks previously released 24 years ago, sounds just as fresh now as it did back then.

The B-side Van Delta (Christopher Bleckmann & Hannes Wenner) a German duo in charge of EP's on Groove Attack Productions, M_Nus, Archipel, and Krush Grooves, gives us a nostalgic trip from 1999. "Adjust", with hypnotic keys and solid bass line building up the tension slowly but steadily creating the groove. The final track by Dav (aka. Davor Stosic) a Croatian artist B+Positive, Cove Recordings, and Sensei labels that regularly has been on Swag Records store shelves. "Flight", a fantastic example of late 90's tech-house. Hypnotic soundscape, variety of layers and a slow build up, giving the track an otherworldly feeling.

All tracks were produced between the years of 1998 - 2003, timeless and rarer then rare.

Dancing to Scrambler one would probably need the same room to jack. Swapping the Windy City with British raving fields, KiNK and Raredub deliver a take on the early sound of UK that might miss breakbeats, but manage to re-use all the other ingredients to a hair: fine-tuned and updated. Quotation without modern misinterpretation. Hyper and epic at the same time. And always remember the future!

Diving once more into the forgotten corners of the electronic Spanish music scene from the 80’s and early 90’s, Soundway reissue Scan Man’s full single Arabian. Bringing together a Furious Five retro styled bounce & rhyme and a bite of UK street soul, the track is taken from Soundway’s hugely popular compilation Ritmo Fantasía. Expect soulful American expat rap layered over sitarlike sounds, and a tumbling, rattling, 808 pattern. Along with the original track and instrumental, DJs Trujillo and Ray Mang serve a souped up instrumental primed for modern dancefloors. Recorded at the CEV Studios in Madrid, Arabian was the first composition and production of Marcos Manzanares to get an official release. Using an Ensoniq Mirage Sampler (one of the early, affordable synth samplers), and with Stephen Sutton providing the vocals for the track, he first made his entry into the Spanish music scene. A short while later he would go onto make a career for him self under the name of Tension808, releasing with major labels like Sony Music and EMI Chrysalis.

The opening track is a remix of Space Echo's "Come Back Home" by none other than Norwegian producer extraordinaire Prins Thomas. Apron Records has been instrumental in shaping the current landscape of contemporary electronic music coming out of the U.K. since 2014. After almost a decade of pushing their unique vision has made the Apron Records imprint one of the most in-demand labels in most independent record stores. Now more than 45 releases deep in their journey, Apron Records have teamed up with Patta Soundsystem to work on their first various artists release and to celebrate this monumental milestone, both camps have collaborated to create a clothing capsule to accompany this release. After working with the artist formerly known as Funkineven on ‘The Wave’ late last year, it was only right to showcase the diverse talents behind this movement.

Sharing a drawing board with Patta for the first time with Apron Records, together they have created a Trucker Cap and a Graphic T-Shirt that echo the racing theme of the whole project. Better Together is the slogan that runs throughout the entire collaboration, stressing how unity makes us stronger as individuals. Artwork for the record has been provided by Amsterdam based artist Jim Klok. His unique Acetone printing technique has now been immortalised on this LP, juxtaposing vintage cars with checkered racing flags to create a dynamic cover that would be right at home in a picture frame as well as a record bin.

System Olympia’s ‘Passi Mai’ is a beautiful 80’s inspired driving riddim layered with her own vocals that wouldn’t be out of place in an arcade or a sticky nightclub floor. Followed up by ‘Leven’ by Brassfoot, we get a wobbler from the NTS regular. Layed with Jamaican vocal samples and audacious arpeggiated bleeps, Leven is a soulful approach to techno tropes that have been bouncing around Brassfoot’s head. Shamos’ 737363 is a cryptic masterpiece. With dreamy pads as a backdrop for shuffling drum beats, euphoric sweeps and dynamically designed synthesis, this closes off the themes explored in the first half of the record.

Side B kicks off with J M S Khosah’s contribution to the record titled ‘Lessons’ which is a dancefloor filler, adorned with glamorous percussion, vocal samples and syncopated stabs ontop of a driving 4x4 kick pattern. Kicking things into 6th gear is a club-ready production from London's most soulful selector Shy One. Groovy basslines and a 2-step riddim make ‘Candy Floss’ an ode to the grimey and the glittery sides of London nightlife. This project champions one of the people that have been pivotal in the success of the label, Steven Julien whose track E46 is an emotional journey through his synth-laden East London studio. Bookending the project are two compositions from Compton’s-own AshTreJinkins. Showcasing his abilities to approach the project from both an ambient and a pure beat-making perspective in order to hold the whole project together.

Dana Kelley, aka Dkma, is a much revered writer, producer, remixer, performer and creative force whose releases have become timeless classics and Holy Grails amongst DJs, music heads and collectors alike. A true artist and innovator, his productions possess the unique ability to engage, transport, challenge and enthral as only next level musicians can.

Grounded in the deep, soulful US House sound of the mid '90's, his earliest releases can be found on Strictly Rhythm, before moving on to produce under his Dkma alias as well as releasing music as Callisto on Guidance. Although Dana sadly passed away in 2013, he left us with a remarkable body of work that has remained both exciting and relevant throughout the last 2 decades and beyond.

Boston Boy Vol.2 is the 2nd in a series of compilations that focuses on Dana's visionary work as Dkma, during his most compelling and creative phase between 1997 and 2002. The compilations themselves are collated from an incredible & far reaching archive of over 20 of Dana's original DATs that have been generously shared with us by the Kelley Family. In the archive, some of Dana's most sought after & cherished works were uncovered, restored and meticulously assembled alongside previously unheard archival material.

One of the unsung heroes of UK underground house music, Medlar has released on Wolf Music, Wah Wah 45’s and West Friends. His remixes and edits for the likes of West End, Kon, Dele Sosimi, Glenn Astro, Disclosure and Billy Cobham always hit the spot with an authentic, raw and crunchy sound that work magic on the dance floor.

Here on his Interruptor EP we have 4 tracks which show off his range as a producer, taking in percussive tools, deep and dusty basement jams and blissful late night atmospherics. Lead track Interruptor is deceptively simple but devastating on a big system. Chopped up percussion, speaker wobbling bass and a heavy kick lay the foundation for crazy timbales and filtering syn-toms, all topped off with a familiar sample from back in the rave days.

Next up we have I Wish which features Kim Anh who delivers a brilliant vocal complimenting the low-slung disco drums, 808 percussion and fat bassline perfectly. This is our idea of what a modern day house hit should sound like. It started with a night out at New York’s Sound Factory - and turned into an obsession, Inner City main man Kevin “Reese” Saunderson and his then manager, Neil Rushton, were at the NY uber house club when The Pressure by The Sounds Of Blackness got its’ debut World play, with the ecstatic response from the crowd meaning it was spun three times in a row. Nobody was more knocked out than Kevin who vowed there and then to come up with a Detroit answer, much to the delight of Soul mad Rushton, co-owner of the Network label. The idea of The Reese Project was quickly turned into House Heaven reality as Kevin recruited Detroit vocalist diva Rachel Kapp to record the anthemic Direct Me & The Colour Of Love as the first two singles. Network made the group a main priority, coming with a whole slew of remixes to complement the original USA mixes on the subsequent album. Three of the most loved Network remixes are on this wonderful timeless 12. The Dave Lee Joey Negro mix from 1991 is rated by many as one of Network’s finest moments, and maybe Lee’s finest ever “remixed with extra production” epics. Rushton remembers meeting Lee to collect the remix, and instantly phoning Saunderson proclaiming “you won’t believe this”. Underground Resistance’s Mike Banks added his magic to the 1991 original mixes of “The Colour Of Love” and the results were so overwhelming great that the idea of subsequent remixes was daunting.but the classic 1994 Network remix by The Playboys flew the flag for U.K. House. C.J, Mackintosh set the production standards for U.K. Soul filled House and his 1993 remix of “So Deep” - sung by La’Trece - is a gem to be cherished forever and a day. Network’s passionate crusade to crossover The Reese Project from House Music superstars to Pop success came tantalising close but never quite happened. But the Network remixes are a glorious legacy of House Music’s golden age and three of the very finest are remastered here and presented on one glorious 12. Reese Project - Songs Not Slogans.

Emerging from the dark recesses of the Chicago and London underground, in 2000 Omni a.m. relocated to New York. This EP marked their first release in their new surroundings, it's an intense and highly sought after 4 tracker that showcases the duo's continuing originality and guile.

First up 'Smurfette's Big Night Out' is imaginative in it's approach, there's punchy beats and cascading percussion that drive the track along and really deliver the funk. Psychedelic acid touches interweave with haunting pads and a super deep b-line creates a chemistry like no other. Next is 'Buckshot' a more stripped back rolling affair. Undulating synths and swathes of infectious bass build the track throughout, whilst spacious analog delays and dub influenced sonic tricks abound. Being long-time minimal instigators, what Italoboyz don’t know about stripped back grooves isn’t worth knowing. Written and produced by one half of Italoboyz Marco Donato, ‘Madam’ EP is Superfiction Recordings’ 16th outing and is as crisp as the day the day is long. Lead track ‘Madam’ combines a straight up house beat with expertly strummed strings and an undulating bassline to create a bobbing and weaving head turner. On the flip of this Pager Records artist Phil Evans takes the original and spices things up with a nicely blown bass tones as well as his trademark funk and a dashing of acid.

Not wishing to waste time on overly complicated drum sequences ‘Unisanza’ instead concentrates on the groove and layers up huge doses of raw synth lines and detuned xylophone elements to conjure up lost afternoons on a sunny terrace. ‘Rude Evin’ rounds out Superfiction Recordings with a tightly woven rhythmic monster with the wonky setting dialled up to 11. ‘Raiz’, the first release on the Oito//oito Discos label, draws the musical focus towards the sound archives of Michel Giacometti, a French ethnomusicologist who dedicated his life to studying the oral traditions of Portugal which had become either lost or forgotten, with his collections still exhibited today in the Museum of Portuguese Music in Estoril. As with their previous releases, the duo carefully manage the source material and interweave it with their Acid House undertones, with both the original cuts ‘Ceifeiras’ and ‘A Poda’ doing a beautiful job at merging the powerful vocals with driving bass lines and rhythms. The opener in particular has a deep mysticism to it, the vocals leading the line as razor sharp pads craft a pulse alongside a steady but powerful drum structure. ‘A Poda’ takes things in a trippy-er direction, with the vocals stretched out in that prog house style that keeps the mind ticking over and the body left to its own devices. The breakdowns in this track are very effective, and really portray the soul of the original vocal performance and allow for the listener to connect with the wider feeling being conveyed. On the flip, the duo asked producers Switchdance and Terra Chã to put their spin on ‘Ceifeiras’, and the results only add to the atmosphere. Switchdance takes things down into murky depths, with a low slung beat expertly interspersed with driving bass notes, as sweeping chordal lines meander up above, giving a whole new angle to the original and winning over our hearts. Terra Chã’s version injects some swing into proceedings, with looping chordal stabs pulsating through the middle along with some beautiful melodic additions that exalt and inspire in equal measure. Balanced, referential, blissful, dynamic. All this, and more, feature heavily on the first edition of Oito//oito Discos, so why not come along and meander through time and space – it’s worth the trip.

The debut release of Pola / Пола record label, founded as an extension of the Half club in Belgrade, which became one of the most prominent hotspots of underground music and culture in Serbia. The Owl Dance EP is composed and produced by Tijamara, the new electronic music duo formed by sisters Tijana and Tamara Ristić, with one remix by the eminent producer Alexis Cabrera.

The A-side is opened by the track Sisters, which is the introduction to Tijamara's world, filled with the contrasts of their personalities. The track Owl Dance will take you on a journey to their birthplace Kikinda, the small town in the north of Serbia, which has the largest long-eared owl roost in the world.

The B-side is dedicated to their Romanian roots and great-grandmother Rakila, after whom they named the track. The deep and wavy minimal sound, inwrought with Tamara's unique stylized singing, will make you feel the spirit of Banat prairie. Maestro Alexis Cabrera remixed this track and converted it into the Half's vibe of the rising Sun.

Like the Mimikoto project’s previous albums, also “Blackbird’s Philosophy” can be described as a symbiosis of jazz with electronic music and other styles of groovy stuff.

On this album the electronic elements melt into the acoustic sounds and rhythms on a quite subtle way, while the acoustic patterns partially adopt styles of electronic music reminding of deep house, ambient and Detroit house.

Jazzy Rhodes, bass, drums and sax solos performed by jazz-rooted musicians like Darius Blair, Uli Schiffelholz, Johannes Schwarting and Justin Zitt, play a more important role than on former releases and bring nuances of funk, modal jazz, free jazz and bebop to this album.

With Fabio Kumori’s string orchestral sound created with upright bass, effects and looper in the track “Notes from Kirishima”, even elements reminding of classical music and atmospheres from soundtracks become a part of this album. These elements merge with rhythmic sound arpeggios of analog synths and vibraphone, which create a maybe unknown style of new music.

On the last track of the album, namely on the track “Blackbird’s Philosophy (Part Ii)”, you hear the soulful and expressive voice of Noomi Mae Coleman, who joined the Mimikoto crew in 2020.

The Mimikoto project was founded in 2019 as a collective of musicians related to jazz, funk, soul and electronic music, after a certain period of composing and playing as duo, trio and quartet.

I feel honoured to finally present my first EP on de Lichting. All tracks except A1 were made during my Covid-19 quarantine between 8th-19th July 2021 on an EMU E64 and Korg Ms2000. With the EP, I tried to cover most of the sounds that I regularly play during my DJ sets. Side A starts with two house cuts, ‘cal01’ and ‘Emspacer’ inspired by some of my favourite house records, and ends with the electro title track ‘rds Theme’. Side B, starts with the minimal-ish ‘Substance’, followed by two Ambient Techno/IDM cuts ‘Trapswet’ and ‘Cwejfx’. Personally, I feel that the tracklist reflects the process of being isolated, which on the one hand, enabled me to (finally) work on music without being distracted, and on the other hand, got me into a melancholic mood over time’.

Obscura label head Fedele makes his long awaited return to the imprint for new EP ‘The Awake, Pt.1’, backed by remixes from Extrawelt and Midnight Operator aka Mathew Jonson and Nathan Jonson. Fedele’s penchant for synthesizer techniques and drum machines has caught the ear of global tastemakers, with projects released on the likes of Turbo, Afterlife, and Ellum receiving support from the likes of Maceo Plex, Tiga, Tale of Us, Dixon, John Digweed, Miss Kittin, and DJ Stingray. With sights set towards summer peak, the Italian returns to his Obscura Music imprint with his latest work, The Awake, Pt. 1.

Riot Dance leads the line with crisp kicks on a heady rise to set the groove before an analog-tinged synth line claims the hook. Acidic tones & ethereal stabs offer a generous dose of psychedelia, while the gritty groove ensures the cut’s ability to ignite dance floors. Modular Madness harnesses ominous flavors and a driving bassline that ebbs & flows to keep minds melting. The melodies open into swirling synthetics, with revolving reverberations and rich soundscapes capturing the ear from start to finish.

Storied German duo Extrawelt arrive on remix duty, taking the reins on ‘Riot Dance’ to twist a low- slung groover. They bring the bassline into the foreground, keeping a delightful vibe alive and welcoming a touch of light to the dark underbelly of the original, before diving back into the deep as the track unfolds. Obscura regular Mathew Jonson connects with a producer he knows well – his brother Nathan. Together, they remix ‘Modular Madness’ under their alias Midnight Operator. Picking up the pace, they maintain the acid-laced grit from the original arrangement, while adding serene melodies to the high-end. A balanced rework from two seasoned veterans.

North London-by-way-of-Suffolk soundsmith Gerry Read delivers his first release for Circus Company with the Lean on Something EP. After countless examples of his bold production moves on many of our brother and sister labels including Herbert’s Accidental Jr to more recently on Koze’s Pampa Records, Read has always displayed a kindred spirit mindset to ours in his adventurous musical angles, and we are very happy to present this particular set of rock-solid and uniquely diverse pieces. The title track “Lean on Something” starts things off in fine and classic Read form, with knocking found-sound percussion, fizzing textures and slick use of chopped and disorienting vocal sample bits, as the track layers unfold into a whimsical and wondrous melodic stargazing anthem. “Wooer at the Well” then follows and picks up the tempo with those fly live acoustic drum lines that gives Gerry’s tracks that special beyond-electronic feeling, while once again the deft layering of such a rich sound palette builds and builds giving other mavericks like Four Tet a sincere run for their money. The mood then brilliantly shifts on the next track “Paramol”, where Read treats us to an almost Robotnik-era Italo sprinkling amidst his otherwise forward-thinking club floor-filling tendencies, with an amazing array of synth sections and an arrangement that should satisfy even the neo-purists out there amongst us. Finally, “Risotto” wraps up the proceedings with a warm, jazzy bouncer reminiscent of both Read’s as well as our own catalog’s charming early offerings, and a kind of landing-at-home-base sensation with smoky cubist funk feelings and an equal parts rough-yet-undeniably cool effervescent groove.

Amphibian Man II (two) is an alias of Dmytro Nikolaienko (Muscut, Faitiche).

This project is an experiment, an attempt to play with the house, techno and dub techno genres.

As a result, there are two tracks with variations inspired by the theme of the haunted Crimea peninsula and the 1961 sci-fi film “Amphibian Man” (also set in Crimea). As conceived by the author, the music is a soundtrack for the non-existing sequel if it had been filmed in 2084.

Following the work by DJ Nobu, their second compilation has been compiled by none other than Antal. Also known as the festival's headliner and the man behind Amsterdam record shop/label Rush Hour, all 11 tracks are selected by Antal in a 2 x 12-inch + bonus 7-inch format. From local Dutch newcomers to '80s Japanese cult music, rare grooves to danceable house music, and rare Caribbean soul, this compilation is a portrait of music enthusiast Antal Heitlager’s enormous collection and 30-year DJ career, a work of art that can be enjoyed by all music fans!

Fabric resident Anna Wall and production partner Corbi link up again for the first time since their debut EP 'DATs In The Attic' dropped on Ritual Poison in 2019. Between then, Anna has gone on to release music on her own label Dream Theory and turned in a gorgeous deep cut for music platform 22 tracks' final send off before closing. Corbi has been no stranger to production either, heading up important label Fina records and releasing stand-out EPs on Rough Recordings & Kouncil Cuts.

The pairing bring their newfound knowledge to Ltwht, shape shifting between colorful displays of breakbeat and melodic perfume. Ahead of the release, Anna & Corbi spoke of their love of digging into the past, delving into old techno and rave records and inspired by artists like LFO. While the influences are apparent their sound remains unique, contemporary and flourishing with personality.

Title track 'Persistence' opens with choppy breakbeats and deep subs, adding extra depth and weight; providing the perfect base for the record's shimmering synth lines. 'Consciousness' then conjures wide-eyed atmospherics, joining hands with a soothing, deep bassline and diamond shaped arpeggio. 'I'm just changing consciousness' is gently spoken as the track ebbs and flows across the oceans moon-lit surface.

Subtly euphoric and inherently introspective, B side opener 'Take A Moment' shows a developing side to the pair's growing sonic palette. Early trance meets breakbeat, in an emotive display of otherworldly electronics and primordial whispers. The tracks bassline and lead add an extra layer of playfulness, turning the track from a cerebral workout to a blissful dance around an open flame. The record comes to a close with 'Regardless' an acid inspired dream that unfolds amongst a backdrop of clouded pads and intoxicating patterns.

Sistrum Recordings returns with a new addition to the family, producer Riccardo Masi better known to dancefloors as Reekee. This alliance came together quite naturally, following up on a remix that label head Patrice Scott did for Reekee’s Wrong Notes label. The sophisticated vibe of his productions is very much at home on Sistrum.

Leading off is “Sunshine”, and its deep house rhythms and sultry moods set the tone for the EP. Building up patiently from lush strings and bleeps into a full on electronic sax and piano led bomb, Reekee’s arrangement skills are on full display here.

“Livin’” is next with its funky synth bass and broken beat groove. The energy really start to pick up once the Rhodes chords and Moog solo kick in, contrasting different timings against one another to craft a sweet syncopation that will force dancers to move their hips from side to side.

Moving on to the B side, “Never As It Seems” is driven by a rough house drum pattern. As insistent as the drums are, the instrumentation is what takes it to the next level. The beautiful harmony and melodies connect this jam to the tradition of Detroit high tech jazz, fitting nicely into that lineage that Reekee clearly has great admiration for.

“In This Place” closes out the EP in style, dropping the tempo and cranking up the swing. The laid back funk reaches its peak with big phased strings that help lift the track up into the stratosphere, perfect for smoky after hours sessions.

This collection of tracks shows off Reekee’s versatility and musicality, fitting snugly into Sistrum’s hallowed catalog while at the same time keeping his own distinctive voice front and center.
