After words of wisdom from originator David Morales, St. Xose, patron saint of afterhours, re-rubs his own entry from BKS-01 into an electro flip with a forceful but smooth strut, Nathan Nothing's ephemeral vocals vanishing in spaces between steady bass pulses and broken beats. Those looking for late-night addresses check Noha's 'Madison Street 932', where the PanickPanick! label head proves his local cred with a funky, vocal sample-driven house jam equally at home on its eponymous street corner or somewhere later, darker, and preferably inside.

Label regulars DeWinter & Emma return with 'Unity', the spoken word Spanish vocals interweaving with choppy snare patterns and a room-filling reverberating bass roar that hits paydirt when English vox and a kick hit late in its second half. C&K are local legends Connie & Karina, and while that may not be some punters' first guess for their moniker's meaning, the track is an exercise in restraint and class, jaunty house swathed in dub echoes and hand drums that positively sways when the trombone lead swings in to carry the tune.

Brooklyn Sway returns for its fifth release with another all-star cast of names drawn from the Brooklyn underground, as always vinyl only and with label art from NYC mural legend Cern.

Label regulars Vivian Wang and DeWinter lead off the A-side in a tough-but-dreamy style on 'What About Love', the heavily processed vocals of NYC house guru Kevin Williams giving the tune a true NYC afterhours flavor. Next up is David Paglia, also a frequent label contributor, whose 'Spellbound' toughens up the rhythm section with dub bass and a steady breakbeat backbone while liquid pads and the vocal hook hold dancers in their spell.

The flipside ups the ante for grime, leading off with label head Jay Prouty, DeWinter, and NYC OG Emma's 'What We Do', precision tooled for when the afterparty gets dicey. A hip hop acapella floats through a dense web of flutes, breaks, and a rugged house beat: smart DJs will sense main floor potential here, swaying halfway between gangster lean & proper house dancing. Charles Levine from Soul Clap needs no intro, and his 'Gimme A Break' is equally literal, a funky breakbeat belter with effortless vocal flourishes that balances perfectly between hard and smooth, just the way we like it in Brooklyn.

First up on side A we have that man again Stefano De Santis with Broken Fusion, a typically wonderful track pushing all the right buttons, a much darker affair than his previous three tracks for us. Following on from there we have Melchior Sultana who rounds off side A in style, where Malta meets Detroit, a peak time track for the dancefloor. This is Melchiors third appearance on one of our Best Of Various compilations and all three are superb pieces of music. Onto side AA and Jose Rico with two tracks both superb deep journies into Detroit musical territory. A cultural and collective exercise, Atlantic Stereo brings 24 Colombian and French artists together for a 11-track sound experience connecting two continents. Nuits sonores, an urban festival showcasing electronic cultures in Lyon (France) since 2003, began building bridges with Colombia in 2017 as part of the French Institute’s Année France—Colombie. The festival invited representatives from the new Colombian electronic scene to go on tour in France and organised a series of events in Colombia (Bogotá, Medellín, Manizales). This multi-city event in Colombia would go on to be repeated in 2018 and 2019, allowing a total of 25 of the most captivating artists on the French electronic scene to perform in Colombia over the course of three editions. Between 2020 and 2021, although forced to cancel the 4th edition of Nuits sonores Colombia due to the health crisis, the festival team offered to pursue the exchange by initiating, with the support of the French Institute and the French Embassy in Colombia, the production of a brand new compilation. Atlantic Stereo reflects the artistic riches found in two territories that Nuits sonores intends to carry on bringing together. A shared conversation in a moment of profound crisis for culture, thus becoming a perfect opportunity to reimagine it. The compilation opens with artists who know how to listen to the world and the diversity of its sounds, as shown by the soaring Cumbia psychedelic track by Dani Boom (Systema Solar, El Leopardo...), Tushen Raï & Cornelius Doctor. It then digs into Reggaeton and Dancehall influences with a collaboration between Linapary, Simo Cell & Low Jack: a subtle alliance between the Colombian artist’s sensual trap music on the one hand, and the kicks and heavy basses of the French electronic duo on the other. With ‘Full Friction’ (Voiski and Verraco’s track) and the Julianna and Zadig collaboration, the compilation moves on to another atmosphere: a more vaporous and syncopated one, made of powerful breaks and kicks, with ice-cold and bewitching electro and breakbeat tracks. Atlantic Stereo’s last tracks eventually lean towards Dance and Club, inviting us to dance to Bambounou’s solar techno, revisited by Gladkazuka, and the Balearic house remix of Laurent Garnier’s ENCHANTé by Julio Victoria. Atlantic Stereo is a compilation standing at the crossroads of different cultures, permeable to all sound research. Whatever condition your condition is in, Soul4Real have huddled together a team of the finest soul physicians to make you feel good.

We scoured all the shelves in the soul pharmacy and discovered some potions that were only just through the trial stage. Just one listen to the brilliant Aretha, Gladys, Walter Jackson and the Purify’s tracks convinced us not to wait for FDA approval, so we took the plunge and shared them with the world on vinyl for the very first time. Recorded in 1968, Arthur Alexander‘s magnificent “I Need You Baby” reached legendary status during the tape-swapping epidemic of the late 70s/early 80s. The first traces of Alexanderitus were linked back to a tape dispensed by a north London mod by the name of Randy Cozens, which went viral. Even today, the mere mention of the title to any of those C60-swap-survivors can cause severe heart palpitations. Down in Memphis, they tend to practice the holistic approach to heartaches. Southern folk understand it’s about the voice and its natural healing powers, especially when it’s being administered by the likes of the Soul Children and Shirley Brown, who instinctively inject the perfect amount of ache, warmth and emotion to hit just the right spot. May we prescribe at least two listens a day, taken with or without food. Helping with recovery we have included tracks by our care team Maxine, Gil Scott-Heron and the Isleys, whose gentle grooves will help nurse you back onto the dance floor in record time. And finally, my personal favorite, Dr Johnnie Taylor. Frankly, it beats me how someone who delivers the lines "she don’t break no records when it comes to good looks” and “she burns up the food when she cooks" to his girlfriend manages to avoid a trip to A&E. We decided such foolish bravery should be rewarded by having his picture on the album cover.

Is it really possible to create without making references? Feeling inspired without being inspired from the outer space ? With this disc, Tushen Raï comes to reconnect with his first passion, collecting records and falling in love with pieces that have unfairly fallen into oblivion, left behind, lost in the meanders of the musical hyper productivity of the 80s and 90s. As a tribute to these unlucky melodies : he samples, he reinvents, he reconstructs. Not in the hope of giving them a second life, and without the pretention of changing their destiny. But simply to cherish them, to show them his love and his respect for what they are. As a geographical snub, Tushen Raï chose to invite his neighbors, both producers and friends, to join forces on this trip through Peru, Finland, Italy and France.
