Australian producer Ben Sun joins Phonica’s main label with a solid four track EP of House music in its various forms, from slick Disco loopers to deep ambient tribal rhythms.

The now London-based Ben Davidson has a string of well-received records under his belt, under the aliases Benjamin Sun, Earth Patterns and now as Ben Sun. His regular outings on Delusions Of Grandeur and Voyeurhythm are particularly of note, as well as recent excursions on Utopia and Razor N Tape. We’re delighted to have him as part of the Phonica family now too!

The 12” starts with ‘Trip’, a gradually building filtered Disco teaser, with classy deep House number ‘Mellow Madness’ following up. On the flip is the sumptuously balearic roller ‘Glow’, before the record’s euphoric floor-filler ‘Siren’ rounds out the record in style. We have a feeling this particular earworm will be lingering in records bags (and USB sticks) for some time!

On the A-side, Transmission has all the vibey goodness of an early Strictly Rhythm record, while Sable Sun scuba dives into Larry Heard territory with lush pad swells and squelching acid lines. On the flip, the emotive motion of Tremors builds through hypnotic arpeggiated synths, a slow-rolling bassline and crystalline melodies, and the record finishes in proto-house territory with the Peech Boys era Larry Levan-inspired Red Light. This EP may wear its influences on its sleeve, but it looks (and sounds) classy as hell.

For this very reason on our eighth vinyl release from Minor Notes Recordings we’re featuring non other than the legendary producer BMB SpaceKid. Stemming from St. Petersburg and from an early age, BMB proved himself to be an extraordinary musician. Able produces top quality compositions with ease, and in any style, but all with his unique twist.

To date BMB is best known in hip-hop circles as he made album beats for many key underground rap artists. He also went international and produced joint tracks with Dj Premier, Anderson Paak, Raekwon, GoldLink and many others. BMB has also performed at the Fabric Club in London, the Outlook Origins festival, live on Boiler Room and BBC Radio 1. He also participated in the Red Bull Bass Camp and the Hip-Hop Academy.

On the record "Taste Booster" BMB SpaceKid showcases his taste and skills in the production of house style dance music. A tribute to the traditions of African-American music, the virtuoso mastery of MPC and sampling techniques, and an outstanding approach to melodic rhythms. For this sixth release we prepared something special and very close to our hearts. While digging deep into the obscurities of French House music a few years ago, a friend pointed us to a label, Labo Music which had just a few releases in its catalogue and was run by an artist called “Bo’”. Through a series of synchronistic events, we managed to get a hold of the very first 2 releases produced by Bo’ himself, and since that moment we got lovestruck with the music contained in those records. It was later Bo’ himself to tell us that the music in LABO001 and LABO002 was capturing a very special and delicate moment of his life, while he was going through personal challenges and changes, that took him into musical directions that he was not used to pursue.
We don’t know what force he channelled with those sessions, but the music resonates so much with us, that we felt it should not be heard just by a few lucky ones and thus decided to pick our favourite tracks and reissue them on OCD.

Peggy Gou’s Gudu Records steps into 2022 with Brain De Palma’s second EP for the label, Purple Brain.

Although this is only his second release under the Brain De Palma name, Alexei Versino has been honing his sound for the best part of a decade, both solo (as Panama Keys) and as one half of the duo Stump Valley, previously releasing on labels like Dekmantel, Soul Clap and Off Minor. Born in Ukraine but settling as a child in Turin, he’s currently based in Berlin and makes up a key part of the Gudu stable.

Coming straight out the gate with an instantly impactful bassline, opening track ‘IQarus’ sets the tone for the rest of Purple Brain: bold melodies and basslines shot in high-definition, full of detail and idiosyncrasies. As with his last EP for Gudu, cinema is a key reference for Brain de Palma: ‘IQarus’ is a reference to his directorial namesake’s first film, while later in the EP, ‘(O.W.D.) Once Were Dancers’ nods to the 1994 drama Once Were Warriors, “dedicated to all the ravers, DJs, aficionados who had to go through the lockdowns … a shout out to people who keep on fighting for the underground culture!”

Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Purple Brain’ pairs an unforgettable arpeggio with stargazing stabs and a marching cowbell beat, while the Netherlands’ Deniro takes ‘IQarus’ into the depths of the night with a cosmic remix that grabs hold of a groove and refuses to let go.

In a gilded haze of resonant tones conjured by traditional and non-traditional methods, Brigitte Barbu created an inviting sound world brimming with life and doffing its cap to 1970s signal processing. Out of such sonic research and development comes a wealth of material for other artists to sink their teeth into, and so we proudly present an accompanying remix EP that takes Brigitte Barbu’s distinctive stamp into new territory. Roman Flügel makes a first appearance Circus Company with two versions of “Dae-Boj DeMoya” that showcase this constantly versatile lynchpin of European techno. First up is his “kraut remix", which unsurprisingly channels the grainy beauty of Neu! and early Kraftwerk, before his “synth remix” dials back the drums and diverts our attention towards an expansive arrangement of melodious flourishes from classic synthesisers. John Tejada and Reggie Watts reunite as Wajatta following their triumphant LP Don’t Let Get You Down on Brainfeeder to deliver a particularly inventive, soul-stirring vocal techno version of “Couvre chef en peau de taupe". Watts soars over the signature warmth of Tejada’s production, while Brigitte Barbu’s mysterious tones linger in every fold of the mix. A firm believer that the long hours of studio work keep a musician grounded, Butane boasts an impressive discography, released by some of the most highly regarded labels in the business, such as Crosstown Rebels, Sci+Tec, Hottrax, Fuse Records, Lauter and Get Physical. As a label owner, he's the founder of three influential underground dance music imprints of his own, Alphahouse, Little Helpers and Extrasketch.

Riko Forinson is an Italian artist passionate about the sound of drums and piano which he studied intensively from an early age. After a while of exploring the acoustic dimensions of music, he immersed himself in the world of digital electronica, performing as a DJ at various events and releasing with labels like Orpheus Recordings, Lucidflow, Dushe Label and Bar 25 Music. Nowadays he's an author, composer and producer who loves to play with various techniques while integrating jazz, reggae or classical aspects into his compositions or sets.

He metaphorically introduces the first LP by the Milan born and bred duo, who share a deep love for music and a great productive connection. They deliver a brilliant eleven-track album, full of diversified sonic influences and quite representative of their bright talent. The record, which will be presented to you both on vinyl and digital, starts with a couple of masterly produced beats (Fantastic/Teacher Carey), both with an analogous mellow, warm energy, some brilliantly crafted bass-lines and a substantial harmonic presence. The album keeps rolling with the Deep feeling of Flower Diva: its soulful, skilfully arranged vocals and the dreamy synthetic chords help the pair to perpetuate this passionate, balmy vibe. Insomnia ends the first quartet of sexy tunes with some seductive improvised spacey key stabs and its delicate pensive chords while Q Orchestra (the lost tape mix) speeds up the heartbeat and leads to the closing track of the A side, Bebi: a gorgeous groovy interlude. B side kicks off in style with the slightly darker feel of Myers Boogie Man where the pitched sampled vocals, the solid rhythm section, a profound array of sonic details and a marvellous warm synth melody towards the end of the track make it a true ghetto hit! Right On, with its broken-beat and a radiant harmonic progression, Contact 911 with its tight kick-snare connection and some far-out, whimsical chord evolution and G Buster with its irresistible slightly acid driving force, pave the way for the grand finale where Maam, a proper club banger, ends this amazing LP in epic fashion. Heist Recordings has been pushing the envelope for house music since day one and we’re always on the lookout for artists that represent our vision on electronic music. Our next guest on the label fits that profile and more. He is the embodiment of modern-day electronic funk and a true wizard on the keys: Atlanta raised cool guy Byron the Aquarius.

Byron has a solid history on the label: He remixed Parker Madicine back in 2017 and did a mad solo on the 2019 released Dam Swindle track ‘The life behind things’. We’ve done some shows together and stayed in touch while Byron was working together with Jeff Mills on his 2020 jazz crossover record ‘Ambrosia’ on Axis. Now, after a solid string of releases on labels like Shall not Fade and Purveyor Underground, Byron is making his solo appearance on Heist. His ‘Akira’ EP goes from dark basement grooves to dreamy broken beats and features a remix by New York dance music wizard Kush Jones.

The Akira EP kicks off with ‘I love yo’. In this track, Byron decides to leave his keys at home and goes in deep with a moody club workout. ‘I love yo’ is a track that juxtaposes dreamy samples with rough percussion and vocal chops with a clear nod to the work of Mr. G. The melody is mellow, but don’t be deceived; clever drum programming and plenty of sub take this track into the club vibe just the way Byron likes it: warm, hazy and sexy AF.

Byron is not known for delivering straightforward house tunes, but when he does deliver them, he does it in style. Enter ‘Get up’; the A2 of the EP. There’s everything we love about house music: smart vocal chops, driving percussion, classic house keys and a booming sub to get you bumping to this beat.

The B-side sees Byron up the tempo and take a deep dive into bass territory with ‘Love’. In this track, there’s lush pads running over a percussive broken beat and chopped R ’n B vocals to add some serious sex appeal. It’s deceptively simple and clean but ever so catchy, which clearly shows Byron’s prowess as an electronic music producer.

Going back to classic house mode, we’ve got ‘Success’: A spoken word house track that fits right in with the classics. Byron sets the mood with some bumpy key-and synth work while brainstorming about originality and blackness throughout the track. Even though the message underneath might be a serious one, Byron succeeds in delivering this in a fun, uplifting way that never gets pretentious or divisive.

The EP finishes with a remix by New Yorker Kush Jones. This is an artist who understands how to build a groove. He could take you anywhere from house to juke, footwork and techno, which is exactly why he’s been getting so much love for his music recently. Kush is an artist who sees no boundaries in his music and still manages to create his own sonic universe. His remix of ‘I love yo’ takes a dreamy approach with soft chords running over an electronic groove with a pure and improvised feel. All elements fit together perfectly and it’s the clever ad-hoc programming and arrangement that suck you into his unbounded world from the first beat.

The story behind Shroomz, Guns and Roses came from the pandemic, it was a time I felt deep in nature and studying of zen, I felt like the pandemic brought out a darkness in me, and I combatted these negative thoughts with nature and mushrooms to create a balance in my life spending time in the mountains of Alabama and Asheville, North Carolina. I chose "guns" and "roses" as a way to juxtapose the violence we're experiencing in the USA with the peace of mind a rose can bring as a balance in life. Music makes its way through these tough times we're all facing, and to me, music is that rose. I paint a canvas of my emotions through synthesizers and drum machines to show the world balance can be found through even the toughest of times.

I Love Like Your Men is a tribute to the undated diaries of Samuel R Delaney, slices of time that cut themselves holes into other times and other places. Moments of reflection that now tie into the heads and bodies of others.

Swallow Me samples Kamala Sankaram’s performance at the final Resonant Bodies festival in New York in 2019. “In Ancient Greek, ololyga is the ritual shriek of women, a sound so alarming to men that it could not be uttered within their earshot. Bare Bones Wax presents release number two on their vinyl only label, this time enlisting an artist who is making waves on the scene, Carlo Gambino. Some of Carlo’s previous vinyl outings have been on established labels such as Cinthie’s We R House, Okain’s Ball Park, Frank Roger’s Real Tone and Ewax Editions while gaining support from heavyweight DJ’s such as Raresh, Silverlining and Matt Tolfrey, amongst many others. With future wax releases slated for labels One of 4, Discotech, 3AM, Echoes of Glory and Audio Analysts over the coming year, you could say he is a man in demand! Here he supplies two original tracks with a remix of each from Goshawk and David Moran respectively. Kicking off the EP is the first original track from Carlo titled “You and Me”. A modern deep feel and catchy vocal make this track a real killer. Goshawk (Half of deep house legends Rhythm Plate) serves up a tough underground remix of “You and Me” with an American influence for the A2 track. Over on the flip Carlo’s second original composition is “Get Back”. Sitting firmly in the deep house camp but with minimal elements and cut up vocals it purveys a killer groove. Finishing off the EP is the David Moran remix which is a full on dancefloor destroyer. Jacking beats, vocal snippets and a heavy bassline work a treat to finish off the EP.

Carlo has been a steady force of deep house for the last 15 years with successful releases on over a dozen different labels. This latest foray on Lovedancing is one of his best. The entire EP is loosely influenced by The Neverending Story, apparent in the creative and enigmatic use of samples, inspired sounds, artwork and themes. Next up on Seasons Series is an upbeat 5-tracker from Berlin-based producer, Carlo, who offers an exuberant respite from the context of urban seclusion out of which it was imagined.

Since his debut release back in 2009, the Spanish-born house connoisseur has well and truly mastered his craft: music that strikes the balance perfectly between the transportive, meditative potential of deep house and disco's danceable groove. where is everybody? EP is the product of this discovery. Lilting deep house track "Sensitive Response" sets the EP's feel-good tone whilst the title track picks up the energy with undertones of disco and funk.

On "Earth Two", Carlo teams up with Netherlands-based producer, Retromigration, to deliver a skippy sax-infused banger which lets you melt into its groove. Sampling a goodnight voicenote from his young son, "Noche" sees the EP at its most contemplative, a meditation on the isolating impact of lockdown. Finally, the tech-house sensibilities of the EP's closer "Moving Forward" leaves things on a positive note with a meandering funk bassline and blissful vocals.

Polish production legends Catz ‘n Dogz journey to Club Sweat to drop a double A-side ready to set the rave-craving animals out of their cage, releasing ‘Rendezvous / Nasty’. The duo have creatively crafted a double A-side oozing floor-to-floor elixir, to skillfully entice underground cavern connoisseurs.
