Around six years ago, a bunch of djs, musicians and music lovers started gathering for weekly five-a-side football matches on a small, run-down pitch in Kreuzberg 61. Because much like music, football brings people together, wherever they are from. This collection has been a long time coming and collects tracks by players from seven different nationalities, all based in Berlin, united by both their love of the beautiful game as well as their passion for electronic club music. 11 tracks are on offer here (what did you expect?), each one dedicated to the composer’s football hero - a tribute to their unique skill and the beautiful moments they’ve brought us on the pitch. As such, the tracklist forms an all-star fantasy “Mannschaft". Compiled by player-coach Tristan Jong (aka Gratts) and made possible thanks to Markus Lindner (aka Delfonic), the package lives on the grass pitch between corner flags techno, deep house, disco and broken beats. It features music by established underground artists like Venezualan digger Trujillo, We Play House Recordings stalwart Harry Baldi or Juliano as well as debuts from the likes of Nemorna, James Martin and plenty more indeed. Five of the tracks are pressed loud onto vinyl as a club sampler - including full artwork comprising of some of the team pictures taken throughout the year - to the complete 11 track package. “Una Vida De Barrio”, then? Flee new issue tries to document a Caucasian musical phenomenon mixing criminal songs, Adygean culture & post-soviet society; and features original recordings of traditional songs, and contemporary reinterpretations by a selected line-up of electronic-esque producers: Emmanuelle Parrenin & Colin Johnco, Misha Sultan, Zongamin, Minami Deutsch, Valentina Goncharova, Simone Aubert, Ben Wheeler... Ulyap is a village in the Caucasus, where one can find an enormous number of accordion and harmonica players. "Ulyap Songs: Beyond Circassian Tradition" represents an attempt to document ancient bards' chants and their entanglement with popular rural heritage as well as post-Soviet culture during modern times, through a critical prism. This publication reflects on a music phenomenon involving talented female and male musicians, performing in lively (and sometimes festive) social dynamics. It does so by revealing important songs of the repertoire on the one hand, inviting original artists to experiment with Ulyap songs on the other. Built around an important work of documentation on this genre mixing criminal songs, Adygean culture and lyrics related to post-Soviet society, the book and record (available separately or as part of a bundle) include essays, archive and contemporary photographs as well as three art commissions questioning this original phenomenon from various point of views. Written in English and Russian, the book encompasses a dozen contributions. Musically, the double LP conists of rare and unpublished archives as well as recordings made by Flee, Ored recordings and Nikita Rasskazov over the last years in various locations of the Caucasus. These original celebration and drinking songs performed by group of professional and amateur musicians alike have been used as a creative fabric by sonic sound artists and musicians.

Tropical Disco plucks out a spellbinding salvo of heaters for Tropical Disco Volume. 7, dished out on suitably heavy wax. Moodeena’s “The Horns” boldly kicks off the record, effortlessly weaving together elements of funk, soul and afro, influenced by a myriad of far-reaching regions. The earworm of a bassline subtly leads the piece, morphing, dipping and then reassembling as the brass resurfaces, creating a tender, palpable sound palette. On the flip “What Da Funk”s playful track title doesn’t reflect its cultivated build, and no doubt lethal functionality on a dancefloor.
Titillating strings are the driving force for Tropical Disco newcomer Sammy Deuce’s input, bringing a burning, high-energy ode to golden-era disco with “Smack My Strings Up”. Hot on the heels of a series of well received releases on labels such as Glasgow Underground, Club Session and Big Love, Sammy deuce offers up a rare guest track on the label that pairs perfectly with a recipe Sartorial and Moodena have refined so successfully.

One thing that is written in stone even in these days of near endless uncertainty is that when Topical Disco unleashes one of their vinyl releases they are a no questions asked, must have. For a label which regularly dominates the top spot of the download charts they still consistently manage to up the ante for their vinyl drops. It’s no wonder at all that the previous editions have gone on to become collector’s editions, disappearing from the shelves as quickly as you can say here today, gone tomorrow. Volume 24 easily keeps this incredible run of club vinyl masterpieces going strong. Packed across two side of black gold are tracks from newcomers and scene heavy hitters alike Toscana, Toby O’Conner, Charly Angelz and Frank Virgilio. The mysterious Toscana leads the way with the wonderfully enigmatic ‘The Girl With The Red Hair’, a six and a half minute slice of pleasure packed Balearic disco. Incessant, warm and inviting it combines a divine groove heavy bassline, funky guitar licks and a subtle percussive backbone with a rather brilliant stand-out guitar solo. This is a track which is guaranteed to fill those summer dancefloors. Next up is Toby O’Conner who is returning to Tropical Disco after his lauded ‘The Heist / 1920 EP’ with another high energy slice of disco goodness in the shape of ‘Cave Of Gold’. Again this is classic Tropical Disco, combing both live chops with jazz overtones as throbbing club ready drums provide the framework for a bubbling bassline, subtle keys and sax solo’s aplenty to weave their magic. Expect jazz inspired shapes to be thrown on dancefloors across the globe when this one drops. Over on the flip is Charly Angelz, another artist who has been making a considerable swirl on the disco scene of late. ‘Mother Phunk’ is very aptly named with an absolute gem of a bassline front and centre as classic funk vocal chops, vibey pads and guitar stabs all combine perfectly with earworm strings for anther sure fire floor filler. Closing the EP out is scene stalwart Frank Virgilio. Hailing from Napoli Frank has been behind a virtual disco smorgasbord over the five years including regular chart bothering appearances on Tropical disco. ‘What We Love’ tips its hat to the golden era of house music, think 90’s Soulfuric meets MAW. Vibes abound here from the classic drum sounds right through to the divine ethereal percussion which adds that touch of class. It’s common knowledge that KOMPAKT’s Total series serves as our yearbook, a musical wrap up of the past 12 months. Therefore it doesn’t come as a surprise that this year’s edition is informed by another pandemic year, where dancefloors were still mostly deserted and the devastating developments in Eastern Europe. Kompakt’s A&R team still kept on foot on the imaginary dancefloor, while scouting different realms apart from the big room euphoria. Anyway, brain dance has always been a key ingredient to our catalogue.

The Voigt brothers are opening this year´s vinyl edition in an unusually romantic fashion. ‘Why’ combines a bubbly FM bassline with lush washes of looped guitars. High off the (presumably high) heels of her recent album ‘Jesus Was An Alien’ she delivers a spanking new excursion into her sonic world, ‘The Hill’. Our Mexican friend Rebolledo makes his first ever solo appearance on Total with his trademark hypnotic desert sound. Jürgen Paape is calling a spade a spade with ‘Le Monde À Changé’ – The world has changed indeed. Our prodigal son, Matias Aguayo, returns to the mothership with ‘Cinco Y Rojo’. First up is Kurd Maverick vs Adeva who makes a huge return with the infectious 'In & Out My Life'. A straight up cut of 90's house & rolling tech house influences mixed into one, sampling cuts from the feel-good classic 'In & Out My Life' by Adeva, turning the original on its head.

Kicking things off on Toolroom’s next 4-track vinyl sampler series is a record we are immensely proud to be releasing. Following the tragic news that legendary US vocalist Kathy Brown is fighting stage 4 cancer, we wanted to give something back to an artist who musically we have all grown up with, and respect greatly. With all profits going to Kathy's 'GoFundMe' campaign to help pay for her health care fees, in the quest to get Kathy back on the road to a full recovery. The record itself oozes fun and good times, which is what Kathy's music has always been about. Wh0, Mark Knight & James Hurr provide the backing whilst Kathy's iconic 'Turn Me Out' vocal rides away effortlessly over the top. Next up a life-long friend of Toolroom since it's inception and absolute legend of the electronic music scene, Shadow Child debuts on the label with 'Rising High'. His career within this alias spans an impressive 12 years, kicking things off back in 2012 with 'String Thing'; a record snapped up by Claude von Stroke's Dirytbird label that simply took the dance world by storm. From that point onwards a consistent flow of strong releases have appeared from his shadowy lair and been unleashed onto the dancefloors of the world to devastating effect. ‘Rising High’ fuses all of Shadow Child’s passions; old skool rave, techno and let's not forget that incredible vocal sample from 'The Beloved'. A modern-day house record with a nod to the past, this one will appeal to DJ's and radio folk alike! Our next track is a super exciting collab from house music hero Low Steppa and Tony Romera, who is shaping up to be one of the most exiting up and coming prospects on the circuit. Low Steppa enjoyed an incredible 2023 with sold out shows all over the world and releases on key imprints such as Defected, Armada and his own Simma Black. Off the back of his overall Beatport #1 with us last year, Tony recently signed into a 5 single deal with Toolroom and is a huge priority for the label, he is rapidly climbing the ranks with solid releases on Solotoko and Black Book and has a US tour alongside fellow up and coming Toolroom talent, Crusy, already penned for Summer 2024. This record is a straight up, no nonsense club track with an infectious vocal that's garnering support from heavyweight DJ's such as Dom Dolla, Dombresky and John Summit. Last but not least, Maur join the Toolroom camp. This exciting duo have cemented a name for themselves as one of the most exciting new dance acts to emerge from the UK in recent years. Kicking things off on our next 4-track vinyl sampler series is Toolroom's very own Martin Ikin who returns to the label with ‘Make U Sweat’! He was the Best-selling Tech House artist on Beatport in 2020 and 2021 and has over 1m monthly listeners across streaming platforms. Recent studio collabs have included Noizu and Joshwa and tours have seen him travel far and wide to the US, Brazil, Bali, Ibiza, Italy, Croatia and of course, his hometown of London. This new record is the follow up to 'Oscill8' that dropped in March 2023 and sits in a similar lane, in that it's pure, unadulterated club weaponry! Next up is Italian house legend Flashmob with the frenetic, high-energy club vibe of new cut ‘My Body’. Flashmob's sound, production and go-for-broke DJ sets have changed with the game, embracing the vitality of new house music rather than hankering after sentimental sunsets. His ethic and aesthetic move relentlessly forward, using the old and new to craft unique sonic alchemy from big festivals like Tomorrowland to the intimacy of small clubs on the international circuit. ‘My Body’ is typical of Flashmob's current sound, combining solid drums and some insane synths and fx, alongside an earworm vocal sample that results in yet another memorable club cut from an established master. Berlin-based synthoholic and Watergate resident Biesmans steps up for the sixth installment of Running Back's Super Sound Singles series. Taking inspiration from Confetti's 1988 new beat smash This Is The Sound Of C, Biesmans revisits his Belgian roots and reimagines three gems from Belgium's rich '80s music scene. Firstly, Biesmans gets to grips with synth pop stalwarts Schmutz and their '80s breakthrough Love Games, polishing the track up with a motorik disco sheen and chunky bass arpeggios. The remix swaps the new romantic vibe of the original for 8-bit arcade game energy, and calls to mind robotic dance moves and freeze frame video. It's a reboot of a long lost classic that sounds even better the second time round, and will transport dancers young and old alike onto a timeless dancefloor. Next up for reinterpretation is Luc van Acker and Anna Domino's quirky woodblock and piano-led song Zanna. Biesmans transforms it from a melancholic anthem to lost love, and into a darkly uplifting discotheque burner, as icy melodies, synth pads and guitar licks create the perfect bed for Anna Domino's plaintive vocals to float on top. As per the other versions, the instrumental dub version follows, and highlights just how Biesmans has built each of these remixes from the ground up, existing as stand alone tracks in their own right. Rounding off the 12" Biesmans turns his attention to new wave rock band Scooter and their ode to self-reliance You, slowing it down slightly to a heavier beat, with hi hat triplets and a touch of Radiophonic Workshop atmosphere. By condensing the original to its essential vocal and synth melodies, Biesmans reconstructs a pumping 130bpm monster, certified to supercharge ravers all through the night. It rounds off a neatly balanced EP that sees Biesmans take the emotional core of influential tracks from his upbringing and put them in a different context, reworking them to share with a whole new generation.

We have already lost sight of the ground when World Wild Web initiates an immersion into an enigmatic phase of the voyage with his track “Extase”, where we do not really know in which time-space we find ourselves any more. Agle hints at a possible spot: “Sahel”, a tune that feels like a breeze across the desert, before Philip Lawns shakes everyone up with the upbeat “Johns”, bringing our feet back just above the ground. Volta Cab wraps up our imaginary trip with “Krasnodar Nights”, bringing a treat for the soul and some peace of mind. The night can now settle down.

For its seventh offering, Sol Power Sound taps into the pulse of the French Antilles for Tambours de Martinique, a blistering EP of original and remixed versions of rare, drum-centric dance floor workouts. Licensed directly from the legendary Martiniquan label Hibiscus Records, the EP features cuts by Eugène Mona and Max Ransay, two of Martinique's most storied musicians. With reworks by Spanish DJ and producer Kiko Navarro and the Sol Power All-Stars, this one will be in the record bags of discerning DJs all summer long.
The A side features 'Lizo' by Eugène Mona, an essential figure in the folkloric music of Martinique based on the bamboo flute, bèlè drums, and the island's specific variant of Antillean creole. Lizo was originally released in 1990 on Mona's Blanc Mangé Blan Manjé? LP and is anchored by frenetic percussion, a driving bassline, and house-evocative key stabs. Kiko Navarro's remix takes an already dynamic cut to deep Afro-space with thumping drums and a bubbling synth-bass groove that will put dancers through their paces.
With its powerful combo of urgent brass and ensemble vocals, Max Ransay's 1988 recording of the traditional Martiniquan folk song 'Ti Kanno' fills the B-side. 'Ti Kanno' was previously recorded by Ti Émile, Ransay and Mona's legendary forebear. Full of surprises, Ransay's version is a sonic melting pot of hand percussion, horns, unexpected synth lines, and bass. The Sol Power All-Stars edit fills out the low-end thump and teases out the groove for maximum impact.

The freshly launched label and event brand Take A Trip is the brainchild of DJ W!LD & Inessa Raum, with the creative pair developing their entity this year. Alongside a slew of x-rated themed events in London, their debut vinyl EP will also land consisting of four tracks from label affiliates and friends such as W!LD himself, Max Casebolt, Geschwindner, and Lost.Act.

W!LD sets the bar high with his own track taking the lead on the label with some deep dance floor action with a distinct spring in its step. “Sex Society” is the name, utilising crisp drum work and floaty organ lines. The aptly named “Attention” by Max Casebolt is a headsy affair ready to penetrate the club. Dusty broken drums breathing life in the moody sub heavy bass.

Geschwindner paves out a curious trip in “Vaganza”, meandering blissfully amongst the small hours of the night, dark and hazy synths and pads working their way around the chugging body of the track. Cruising on an elasticated bass throughout is Lost.Act’s “Bad Manners”, continuously rolling with the fierce vocal sample used adding some raw and ghetto emotion.

Take A Trip is more than just a record label, providing an all round experience allowing artists and partygoers to express themselves with no boundaries. Four chunks here for tasteful DJ sets.

A tribute to the late Kenny Hawkes, London's dark lord of house music. Lovingly selected and curated by Luke Solomon, Jonny Rock and Leon Oakey.

Running from 1995 to 2002, 'Space' was a Wednesday night founded by Kenny Hawkes and Luke Solomon. It inhabited the underground world of Bar Rumba right in the heart of London's West End and took place each and every week. Kenny and Luke had both been regular fixtures on infamous London Pirate Radio station 'Girls FM', and were seeking a suitable place to play the kind of music they supported on their respective radio shows. They were presented with a weekly opportunity at Bar Rumba and snapped it up.

'Space' was THE place for 7 solid years, hosting local and international guests from the house music community week in week out, to 200+ hardcore and dedicated followers. Regular guest bookings read like a 'who's who' of the music scene with sets from Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall, DJ Harvey, Tom Middleton, A Man Called Adam, Ralph Lawson and Huggy, Harri and Domenic, Francois Kevorkian, Salt City Orchestra, Carl Cox, Chez Damier and Ron Trent.... the list goes on and on and on! Music from seminal record labels such as Classic, Prescription, Cajual, Paper, Relief was played on rotation amongst a killer mix of Disco classics, alternative 80s music, left-field B-sides and techno. The night undeniably became a cauldron of amazing music and midweek hedonistic chaos.

As Soho changed beyond recognition and clubbing moved Eastwards, Kenny and Luke decided to call it a day. Sadly, Kenny Hawkes died in 2011, leaving a huge hole in the dance music community. Kenny was a legendary figure with an unmistakable sound and DJ style, he had a warped sense of humour and a huge personality and he continues to be dearly missed by all to this day.

As a tribute to Kenny, his musical partner in crime Luke Solomon alongside 'Space' regular and DJ / Editor supreme Jonny Rock, and former Classic Records label boss Leon Oakey have joined forces to celebrate his life through music. 3 years of tweaking, pooling music and clearing tracks have culminated in 2 very special double albums and a digital compilation. A collection of 'Space' classics, underground jams and the tracks that shook the Shaftesbury Avenue dance floor, shaping one of London's most revered midweek sessions.

All profits from the compilation will be donated to the British Liver Trust.

Saisei founder Junki Inoue continues his vital archival work uncovering the riches of Japan’s distinctive electronic music scene and bringing them to new audiences around the world. The Sounds Of Transonic compiles six tracks recorded in Tokyo between 1991 and 1995 and released by the pioneering Transonic label, founded in 1994 by Kazunao Nagata and active until 2004. Transonic’s catalogue is a glittering roll call of the scene’s major players, whose inventive and genre-blending work established forward-thinking house and techno in Japan in a way that would shape the country’s electronic sound for years to come. Transonic was instrumental in giving exposure to the work of these artists with its emblematic series of CD compilations, released over a short couple of years in the mid 90s. Beginning with 970-1450km/h, Feedback and Range, the series also included The Roots Of Transonic, featuring music from parent label Trigger. Alongside these compilations came much sought-after solo albums each packaged with striking cover art that makes the discs a visual treat for collectors to this day. The Sounds Of Transonic brings together six tracks from the catalogue into one breath-taking package. The influence of hi-tech jazz and machine funk from Detroit is undeniable in ‘Dream Trance’ (Mind Design) and ‘Blasting Soul’ (Interferon), while ‘Under The Ground’ (Palomatic) and ‘Chelsea’ (Suzukiski) are permeated by the artificial intelligence and trip hop emanating from the UK at the time. The compilation is bookended by two tracks by Nagata himself (as Organization): ‘Space Ball’, a Model 500-worthy chase through the cosmos, and ‘Call’, an eerie echo of Kraftwerk’s telephone, transmitting expectantly out into the void and, finally, receiving its celestial answer. With The Sounds Of Transonic these formative pieces of music will now be available internationally and, for the first time, on vinyl. Saisei is a Japanese word which translates to ‘reproduction’ and ‘to play’ (as in playing records). Japanese culture is widely known for its traditional nature just as much as it is for being forward into the future and this label’s concept does justice to exactly that. Having started digging for records as early as 16 years old, Inoue delved into productions from 1990s Japan to uncover these native gems. Saisei’s core concept is to recapture and reintroduce unique pieces of Japanese electronic music onto vinyl, to an audience it never reached before as most of this music was only released in Japan.

Small Great Tunes Vol. 2 is another strong compilation of original tracks (three on each side) by artists of the Small Great Things. label. The record starts with “Something Hot”, a collaboration of Marc Brauner & Luca Olivotto, a truly hot dancefloor shaker based on groovy basslines and chord stabs, spiced up with vocals and saxophone chops. A2, “Malf Hoon” by UC Beatz, is a warm sounding, smooth house track with a rave-like bass sound and long, progressive percussion buildups. The A-side culminates with “Down Mode” by Lis Sarroca, an 80s-inspired bassy house track, which is slightly darker and suited for heavier sets. The B side starts with “House Nation” by Marcus Raute, a straight-forward house banger in the tradition of the genre. You get groovy piano chords, a strong house bassline, vocal “yeahs” etc. A simply great tune with a lot of power. “Dorado” by Kid Simius is a dreamy and slightly eclectic tune with moody Juno sounds, subtle guitar solos and a beautiful storytelling voice in the breaks. “From Back In The Day” by Habibi Grooves, the last track on the B-side is a deep tune with techy percussions and moody synthesizer loops. The heavy sounding rhythm section in this one makes sure it’s distinctive in any house music set. “Small Great Tunes Vol. 2”, the fourth vinyl record by the Small Great Things. label featuring 6 original tracks is surely a must-have for DJs and lovers of house music. Delivering a unique variety of bangers and tooly tracks it will prove to be very useful in sets and boutique record collections alike.
