Surya is a project from Rome formed by Joe Casagrande, Matthew Mountford and Roberto Lycke. Born in 1995 with consistent dub roots influenced with breaks and ethnic music samples. The duo was quite active in the Roman scene in the late '90s, collaborating with clubs like GOA, Brancaleone, MCA and playing with seminal groups like ORB and Loop Guru. "Wide Tuning" is Surya's first record, an extremely unique debut that goes beyond dance music boundaries. Self-produced in 1997 and released only on cd until now.

The late US house heavyweight has a huge legacy behind his various aliases, and now Chiwax are looking at the Beta 12" from 1999. Opening cut 'Left With Nothing' is a powerful dose of deep house with a vocal turn from David Walker, while 'Nastiness' shows how gnarly and experimental Kelley could make his productions when he wanted to. Byron C. is one of the aliases used by the “Flakes and Teeves” duo, who produced three EPS between 1996 and 1999 on the label «Obsession Music» from Marseille. Today, they got back together to create the “FLABBER.CLUB” label, which reissues their music. This is Byron C. «How To Operate?» the Flakes and Teeves duo’s second EP, produced in 1500 copies in 1997. These now change hands for a king’s ransom on the second-hand vinyl record platforms. Certainly because the four deep dub techno titles on this EP are timeless, charged with emotion and spontaneousness. Compiled at the time by Mickael Mayer on Neuhaus, it is still played by the new generation of DJs such as Nastia or [a:rpia:r] On this version, remastered at Translab, the basses are more rounded, the trebles crisper and the melodies more audible. This reissue have been pressed at 150g. We have also added a superb cover to back the sound with an image, together with a free digital version.

It was called Orlando /Detroit because I had been playing in Orlando a few times and they were really into the whole breakbeat scene, which was around the time I started doing more electro/break beat stuff. I added Detroit, because it was really a mix of breaks with techno sounds on top.
I did the electro stuff with Techfunkers and it eventually evolved into more break beat and then some acid too mixed in, but this release was just a mix of old detroit and the Orlando break scene
Yes, obviously when I started out DJing and electro was born I was playing electro in the 80s, but after I had produced house, I liked to mix different genres, and I think I was probbaly oneof the only ones that was doing electro/house in 1993, but there was a fairly large scene in Florida and elsewhere where they played funky acid breaks, so I did some of that, and this release was spawned from that time.

A pretty interesting find for La Bella Di Notte who digs this super rare and weird white label offering with some retro-futurist imagery. Things kick off with "Space Disco". While the instrumental edit is a joyful, string-led number, the dub edit takes vibe on a deeper, more clubby tip. "Elephungk (Percapella)" closes side A, which is a wigged-out tech-house tune with garnishes of intergalactic effects. "Head (F.)lu(X.)" on the flip is a catchy, arpeggio-driven track with excellent sub-bass and a groovy mid-paced house tempo. The journey ends with "Guiro" a slow, electronic broken beat/synth workout with dark, alien undertones and anti-gravity keyboard sequences. Do not miss this one! Collectors item!

This summer, Soundway Records will release a double vinyl compilation from South African-raised, UK-based DJ and producer, Esa Williams. Titled Esa Presents Amandla: Music To The People, the compilation spans electronic music from around the globe, which feature heavily in Esa’s DJ sets and hold a special place in his record bag – including exclusive versions and hard-to-find tracks from the last two decades.
Esa Presents Amandla will be preceded by a promotional teaser 12” out 31 May, featuring Penny Penny’s 2001 impossibly rare Kwaito House monster “Shilungu”.
A hypnotic, percussive, groove-driven anthem, it features chanting in Tsonga, celebrating South African icon Penny Penny’s Shangaani roots.
On the flip is the acid-soaked “Shilungu (Esa & Mervin Granger ’99 Mix)”, re-interpreting the track with key elements from the original which are extended into a late night, Chicago House influenced chugger.
Esa Williams is an ambassador for the South African music scene within the crowded landscape of the European nightlife – balancing a hectic DJ schedule, a monthly radio show on Worldwide FM and various live projects. He is currently in the midst of a long-term DJ residency at Phonox London, where he embarks on a weekly musical expedition.
