Back in! We are very happy to present our first album on Ilian Tape. At the beginning of 2014 we moved our two separate bedroom studios into one and soon after started working on the album. All the tracks were made in about 6 months in our new Ilian Tape Space Studio in Munich. The time felt right to focus on this adventure, but without any pressure. Therefore the process became very natural and we felt free to go wherever the vibe led us. Our intention was to create a very personal and honest sound without any limitations or guidelines. It’s a reflection of all the years we’ve been growing up, working, traveling and playing together and it means a lot to us. But enough said music is not supposed to be described with words, so sit back, close your eyes, light one up and turn up the speakers!

'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. 'Release (The Tension)' ups the heat a little with a busier bassline, filters and disco licks, before B-side opener 'Lust In Denial' comes with more jazz-slanted piano riffs and 'People Get Too Deep' closes proceedings with the most spacious and dubby arrangement of the quartet. Despite productions appearing here and there since 2015, Yuzo Iwata has kept a relatively low output. Contributing tracks to compilations and releasing singles under aliases Fabio Lazaro and Almost East, Iwata is also affiliated with Junki Inoue's recent Saisei label, editing pioneering early Japanese techno from the likes of Suzukiski and COLOGNe for rerelease. After 'Acid House' appeared on the Butter Sessions Come Together 12" in 2020, the label now play host to Yuzo Iwata's first ever full length. The 10 tracks span a wide variety of tempos and show a consistent approach to unusual sound design first evidenced in Iwata's RA Mix of the Day for Clubberia (100% originals recorded circa 2017).

Kaizu unfolds with dense environmental ambient textures before 'Neverland' takes us into broken dancehall rhythms and acid-tinged dub. 'Funclub' is reminiscent of Japanese video game soundtracks and 80s fusion whilst further into Side A the balearic energy continues to captivate, closing with the beautiful 'Heroes Show Up Late'. This short piece is built around a looping vocal sample and shuffling drum work that all come together perfectly. There's even a trace of Brazilian MPB influence at play with the vocal/synth interplay. It's Iwata's knack for percussion that is most evident across the album however, with Side B opening cut 'Gamelion' taking an Indonesian inspired approach to modern techno. It runs in a similar vein to Komodo Kolektif's work and might be the dancefloor highlight of the whole LP. 'Sundance' follows with more Japanese motifs, recalling Haruomi Hosono's F.O.E project. Another strong rhythmic workout suited to the floor. The environmental ambient textures return with the closing piece 'Time 2 L', strings, bird calls and droning synthesiser winding down the proceedings. Letting us know it's time 2 leave?

Tokyo-based DJ, producer and sound artist Yuu Udagawa inaugurates the freshly launched Cyphon Recordings with her debut EP, ‘Forever’.

Growing up on a cocktail of everything from rock, hip-hop and Latin jazz to techno and house, Yuu’s immersive musical output draws inspiration from this diverse pool of influences to create ‘uplifting and healing’ music for the mind and body. There’s an elegance and sophistication to her productions, which stems from her desire to make music guided by the Golden Mean philosophy of finding a middle ground between two extremes: excess and deficiency.

Active as a DJ since the millennium, which saw her playing at clubs, festivals and fashion shows across the country, she soon turned her attention to music production and has since self-released a handful of singles and contributed audio commissions for Sony Playstation3, museums, theatres and apparel brands. Yuu’s meditative pallet of sounds instantly grabbed Cyphon’s third ear which led to the tracks that make up ‘Forever’: a collection of analog slo-mo electronica and leftfield minimal house that strike a perfect balance between warmth and depth.

The release opens with the titular track: a deep, emotive electro cut punctuated by a twinkling synthline and blissful vocals. ‘Mojito’ continues the EP’s voyage into the deep, matching softly spoken word with jazz-tinged chords and meandering melodies, before ’Hug Close’ strips things back, guided by a crunchy minimal groove, warm, resolute keys and reflective synths.

The B-Side steers things on a soulful course. The dark, enveloping atmosphere of ‘Illuminated Night’ is lifted by bright synth stabs and harmonic R&B-flavoured vocals. These influences continue on closer ‘Stay With Us’. Slowing down the pace, the track is a wash of shimmering funk-inspired chords and shuffling rhythms, laced once again with effortless, soaring vocal tones.

We are always looking for personal and genuine works, and our sixth release was not going to be less. We are very happy to present "Entropy Ep", a three incredible original cuts by producer Yotam Aflalo and a remix of one of the finest of Liverpool, Reedale Rise. Yotam invites us to a trip through breaks and electro, where his taste for rhythm stands out. Subtle acid lines mixed with mysterious pads, along with masterfully programmed percussions are the signature of the EP. In B2 we find our first remix on the label, and certainly no one better than the wizard Reedale Rise. RR redesigns "Four", building on some original elements, and turning the cut into a delightful dream lucid through the classic 808 sound, bouncing bass and crystal clear keys. A solid Ep that fits in any bag of a good musiclover, for club use or home mental-pleasure. We are also excited to announce a collaboration with talented photographer Dan Cohen. His photos will accompany our music during our next releases, and we can't be happier for it.

The Tokyo based producer Yoshinori Hayashi presents a new 12inch with remixes from Bjorn Torske and Prins Thomas. These are the first remixes of his debut LP, Ambivalence, from 2018 which received a glowing 4.0 review from Resident Advisor. Hayashi has studied under Japanese avant-classical composer Mica Nozawa. When not DJing, he works in a record store in Tokyo. Thus far, Hayashi has released a string of 12"s on labels including Going Good Records, Jinn Records, Lovers Rock, Gravity Grafitti and Moscoman's Disco Halal. Previous work by Hayashi has been called "a complex patchwork of studio gear, live instruments, dusty jazz records and smartly cut library sounds, whose textures are soft and inviting. How special it is that house music so of New York can contain storytelling cultivated so far away. That repetition is born of people all over the world going out, and staying in, with this music as a compass; songs that define so many late night hangs for crews of friends, singalongs in DJ booths, contemplative 5am walks home from the club. What can get lost in that repetition, in the shifting canonization of these recordings as symbols of any one scene or moment, is what was behind the pair of round glasses reflecting so tirelessly outwards. Yaeji, an exceptional friend only at the very beginning of finding herpath as a cross-disciplinary artist and collaborator.Yaeji wrote this music while going out nearly every night of the week to DJ and support her own NYC community of friends at their turns behind the decks. These tracks originated from explorations in dancefloor anonymity, growing from seeds planted by sharing her first musical experiments online.

Spritely and nimble and with thumping kicks down below, various bleeps, serene string sounds and glassy melodies colour the groove and make for engaging listening. On the flip, ‘Phasers of Eden’ is a kinetic fusion of ticking percussion, molten synths and withering chords that works you into an ethereal and otherworldly trance. "Powell St. Blues" E.P. is a dance record of rare emotional depth that sees the Canadian bring out an impressive amount of warmth and soul from the machines he uses to make music. Drawing inspiration from early house and techno producers out of Chicago, NY and Detroit, Wolfey likes to work with a small selection of synthesizers, drum machines and outboard effects processors - only using the computer to record, edit and mix-down long multi-track takes and improvised jams. The resultant tracks bristle with vivid detail and texture while evoking distinctly hypnotic and alluring atmospheres.
Side A opener “Powell St. Blues” is a bittersweet melancholic chunk of deep house with spacey chords and subtle acid style motifs slowly undulating over dusty drum machine rhythms. Wolfey’s deep and emotive electro influences come to the fore on “No Fun City”, where tech-jazz style electric piano motifs, bleeping lead lines and dubby rhythmic delays dance around a tactile 808 groove. On languid B-side opener “Overcast”, aural storm clouds gather menacingly above a moody bassline and the crunchiest of machine rhythms. S.M.P (Slim Media Player) guests on the EP’s lusciously loved-up conclusion, “Southlands Transmission”, where morphing synth arpeggios, rich sunrise-ready chords and swinging skittering hi-hats recall the pitter-patter of rain on the windows of Wolfey’s Vancouver studio. It’s a fitting conclusion to an atmospheric, mood-enhancing EP.

Uzuri starts 2013 with a released that comes deep from the Detroit underground. It’s unlikely that you’ll be familiar with the name Whodat (Terri McQueen), but she’s been rocking selected dancefloors in the States and Canada for the past seven plus years, and more recently has touched down in Europe – notably with a gig at Berlin’s ://about blank alongside Motor City compatriot, Marcellus Pittman. Back in The D she runs the Ya Digg Records store and has hosted her Turning Point radio show for a couple of years, but it’s obviously her production talent that brought her to Uzuri’s door. ‘Shut Up and Dance’, the EP’s opener, is an almost disarmingly stripped-back percussive track that eschews the usual drum machine sounds in favor of a lone chiming bell and deep voice pads. It’s effectiveness as a dancefloor tool gradually unfolds without the need to add extra layers. This is followed by a remix from one Tony Cak, an Indiana-based producer and radio DJ whom Terri connected with at a Techno music conference in 2005. Tony turns in a heavy reworking – pretty much taking an opposite approach to the original. The resulting washes of sound result in an almost shoegazey stomp to the track. The flip features one of Whodat’s most recent productions, ‘Love 4 Köln’, which is an ode to friends in Cologne, Germany. Terri was invited to spin at one of Viola Klein’s ‘Bring Your Ass’ parties in the city, and fell in love with the place over the course of her stay. Viola collaborated on the track along with another Detroit native, R.J. Austin.

The third Weserbergland album Sacrae Symphonia no.1 was inspired by music spanning more than 5 centuries: Venetian late renaissance music to the sonic exploration of avantgarde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and the German experimental rock music scene in the 70s and beyond. Some of the music of the sole 40 minute long track has been written, and some of it have been improvised. But all of it has been edited with heavy hands by composer/producer Ketil Vestrum Einarsen using code language and open source software on inexpensive single board computers. The end result is an album spanning athmospheric classical elements, experimental electronic music, full on noise rock assaults and anything inbetween. John McEntire (Tortoise et cetera) used his vast experience with experimental music to mix the album in a way that binds the album together.

Heralding the release of Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz, the forthcoming album by Detroit-born-and-based artist, Waajeed, the 12” features further examinations of the track’s motifs by the vaunted Detroit collective, Underground Resistance, Zambian producer SHE Spells Doom, and a special reimagining by Waajeed himself featuring live drums.

Alongside the LP version the three remixes further explore the links between Techno and Jazz, styles both founded on African traditions that make commentary on the present but are always oriented to potential hereafter.

On the People Mover Remix, Waajeed enlists the talents of Zo!, Tall Black Guy, Michele Manzo, and more to explore one extreme of the track’s musical heritage. Syncopated drums, driven by a full and bright snare drum, firmly place this version in the sphere of contemporary Jazz emanating from Detroit and cities across the US.

Coming from an album inspired by revolutionary efforts against oppression in Detroit and in Black locales around the world it is entirely fitting that Underground Resistance should provide their take on Motor City Madness. UR’s Mike Banks follows the lead of the original’s melange of genres. By thickening the bassline, peppering the mix with extra brass from the Mad Brass Horn Section, and adding strings courtesy of Six Mile Strings, UR further explore the dynamic intersection of music, history, and geography.

SHE Spells Doom closes the remix package with his second release on Tresor after his contribution to 2021’s Tresor30 compilation. The Zambian artist trims Motor City Madness down to the bones of the brass section and infuses them with a gqom beat, simultaneously referring to Jazz and Techno’s deepest roots in Africa, as well as suggesting where they might be headed in the future.

Following on from a string of acclaimed EPs on Planet E and his own label, DIRT TECH RECK boss Waajeed presents his first solo studio album, From The Dirt, due November 9th. This LP will feature 3 pieces of vinyl, manufactured and pressed in his hometown Detroit.

In order to understand Waajeed’s artistic profile, it helps to look at the musical history which informs it. As a child of Detroit who grew up just as encapsulated by hip-hop and soul as he was techno and house, he is driven by a commitment to finding the sweet spot between these paradigms. In a city full of dualities, his productions are underpinned by an inherent awareness of both sides of the coin.

From co-founding seminal hip-hop act Slum Village alongside the late J Dilla and running two of his own labels - Bling47 and DIRT TECH RECK - to producing leftfield soul as the frontman of Platinum Pied Pipers, and releasing collaborative records with Theo Parrishand Mad Mike Banks, his career as an artist has been varied to say the least. This manifests itself gloriously on From The Dirt, in which funk, soul, house, and techno play equal parts across ten dancefloor constructions. Gritty basslines are offset with glistening melodies and heartfelt lyrics, whilst shuffling percussion drives steadily forward. Vocals play an important role throughout, ‘I Ain’t Safe ft. Ideeyah’, ‘Things About You ft. Asante & Zo!’, ‘Too Afraid ft. Lulu’ and the meditative power of first single ‘Strength ft. Ideeyah’. Drum patterns vary between angular, funky and hypnotic soulful house - all with carefully mapped out cycles brandishing an inimitable rhythmic flair with big basslines like his current single, "Power In Numbers".

Easing us in is the down-tempo slow burner "Cockpit" with synth arpeggios that bubble playfully on the surface of layered ambience and a modest two-step rhythm.
