In his early adulthood, he began writing songs about the fast-growing club and bar subculture he frequented where the most outcast of society’s young and marginalized could safely congregate after being ostracized in work, church, school, and often family. In this relatively brief selection of LaRue classics, contemporary remixes paradoxically bring out the timelessness of his songs, in tone, message and musicality. First up, ‘Do You Want the Real Thing’ gets a fresh update from re-edit royalty Opolopo in the style of the lush yet sharp Motown and Philadelphia production pieces that inspired the arrangement originally, still resonates as a nightly inner dialogue or negotiation, another of LaRue’s literary signatures. ‘Let Them Dance’ greeted in its time as a one of the breakthrough moments of new music technology, is reinterpreted by Dr Packer mainly with its live acoustic tracks, also retaining bright, rhythmic synthesizer hooks with results that are still true to his intentionally oblique lyric, a novelistic portrayal of the drug dealers, the Lgbtq+ underground community, and the powerful upper class elite that made up the multi-racial, socially integrated crowds on the dance floors at the height of disco. Last up, ‘Indiscreet’ from LaRue’s 1976 concept album, ‘The Tea Dance,’ tells much of the story about how disco had already birthed its own far more popular and influential successor form, Hip-Hop, by the time it was declared dead by the superannuated establishments of the radio, media, and record businesses. Released in a highly limited, personally inscribed 12-inch 45 rpm edition for a select list of top disco DJs, its complex, elastic polyrhythm made it as irresistible to younger black DJs and breakdancing teens as any of the year’s other big street breakouts. Only Good Vibes Music head honchos and Scotland’s finest The Knutsens give it the magic touch for the modern dancefloor.

Here we‘ve got two tunes that come with a fascinating story. Recorded in the late 70’s, but never released, this music was thought to be lost.But let’s go back to the beginning. Rose was originally a member of family affair called „The Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose“ heralding from Dania Beach, Florida. The group had early success with a recording contract with United Artists, which produced two albums in 1972 & 73 respectively, plus an extensive number of single release taken from these albums, which included the million seller ‘Too late to turn back now’. But Rose’s story starts even further back, singing solo and as part of the Gospel Jazz Singers in the late 60’s, with even a solo appearance on The Ed Sullivan TV show. In 1970, at her mother’s request, she returned home to form the family group and to use her contacts in the music industry to move things forward. The group stayed together until 1976. Soon after Rose returned to a solo career, but few further releases appeared. During this time she recorded a number of tracks in Miami at The Music factory with producer Shirley Cowell, who later received a grammy nomination for her work with Lena Horne. Arrangement was done by gold-certified studio veteran Frank Owens. By this time the Disco sound had taken over much of the music industry and these tracks had a Hi-Energy feel that was much in favour at the time. This session produced the titles ‘Here’ and ‘I want you to stay with me’ but no release was forthcoming. For many years they became almost forgotten, until the next chapter of the story.In 2018 DJ and record collector Dave Thorley saw an old & dusty acetate disc for sale online, credited to Rose Cornelius. When listening to it he realised that this was indeed Sister Rose of the aforementioned group and purchased it, initially with the intention of simply playing it in his DJ sets. Dave offered the disc to his friends of the Disco Bizarre crew from KitKatClub / Berlin for their record label. Rose, in turn, was contacted and she was kind enough to give permission for its release and additional contemporary remixes/ re-edits. Thus New York producer veteran DJ Duke and San Francisco Disco authority Jim Hopkins landed on the bill. You now have the results of this story on Disco Bizarre’s latest release - a story that has spanned fifty plus years. We at Disco Bizarre are excited about the final results and are happy we‘re able to share it with you.

Amsterdam-based DJ and producer Monty DJ debuts on his own Flippen Disks with the release of the "Dogs are sometimes Fishes EP." This 5-tracker showcases Monty DJ's versatility and adventurous spirit, as he combines rhythmic experiments with a keen ear for sound design, perfectly reflecting the essence of the imprint itself.

The EP opens with the mesmerizing track "Rally," which captivates listeners with its fragmented structure, falling out of and back into groove continuously while piano stabs, floaty melodies and a guitar solo provide guidance. Rally is followed by Poing, a bubbly club track with big kicks, breathy pads and intricately layered grooves.

Final Chapter was started in 2013 by Stockholm's Sean Dixon, along with support from Perseus Traxx. A label which is happy to let the music do the talking, Final Chapter is now on it's fifth release, and shows no sign of being prepared to letting the book close. The journey of Detroit and Chicago influenced house and techno continues on this release as label head Sean Dixon presents an EP split between himself and Boston's John Barera, who's previous releases outside of his own label, Supply Records, have issues fourth on Soul Clap and Dolly, as well as Steffi's Panorama Bar Mix CD on Ostgut Ton. Remix duties come courtesy of Berlin based producer, Palms Trax, who's first outing was in 2013 on Lobster Theramin.

Then there is "Curse Of The Medusa", a pretty rumbling track that takes full advantage of its super-funky vocal samples and almost explosive percussion action. "Voodoo Soup" fishes in muddy waters with Credit 00's distinctive drum work and tribal sounds from outer space. The final track "Snake Charmer" is building things up nice and steady. But when the hypnotizing synth melody breaks ground neither serpents nor dancers can resist. The artwork was created by Alexander Dorn a.k.a. Credit 00 himself.

Producer, vocalist and experimentalist Alan Abrahams has been releasing music under his Portable and Bodycode guises for twenty years. Seamlessly forging his South-African heritage with a futurist house sensibility, he has explored a consistently warm, lived-in and evocative sound through countless albums, EPs and live performances. Now based in Paris, following stints in London, Lisbon and Berlin, Abrahams adapts his assured taste to a brand new label, ‘Khoikhoi’. Having previously released extensively on celebrated imprints - including Perlon, Ghostly International, !K7, Dial and the Süd Electronic label he founded in 2002 with Lerato Khathi aka Lakuti - Khoikhoi launches with ‘Believing’, a new EP of Portable material that proves to be as hopeful, honest and touching as Abraham’s finest work. Although characterised by the melancholy often worn on his sleeve, Abraham’s productions are equipped with the sort of rhythmic precision that can only arise from years on the fringes of the world’s finest dancefloors. This knowledge and deft drum-handling is executed perfectly on the title track, ‘Believing’, which spans more than ten-minutes rich in sentiment and percussive pleasure. A truncated dub version without Abraham’s vocal contribution proves equally compelling in it’s perfectly measured reductions. ‘Le Morne’ meanwhile explores the tense, lower end of Portable’s sound, navigating a spacious reflection, with that same sense of wistfulness creeping through gaps of light in the track's heavy bass frequencies.

Play It Say What Records and Isaac Basker return after a 5-year hiatus with White Souls Lost (Part II), providing 4 styles of Isaac’s distnict, “thumping” take on American house music designed for dancefloors, headphones, or contemplating human existence. Never shy of controversial track titles and themes, a trend that can be traced back to previous collaborations with Public Enemy as a hip-hop DJ and turntablist, Isaac cuts right to the chace again focusing on the state of the “soul” in post-Trump America.
On the title track, A1 “White Soul’s Lost (Part II),” a play on words of Nas’ “Black Girl Lost,” Isaac calls into question the state of some white folks’ souls in an appropriately emotive banger that starts with Afro house- oriented congas and layered deep pads until guitar solo-like chord riffs build to a layered crescendo. From this point on, to its conclusion, the track keeps the listener on high.
A2, “So Lonely Here” brings a definitive Isaac sound influenced by his experience growing up dancing in clubs to vintage NYC deep house. The track provides a deep, dusty, almost lo-fi-esque vibe geared to be a perfect track for an early set or afters. Isaac’s love of simple vocal drops in part from his background as a turntablist comes into play again as a lone, sexy female voice casually reminds us of their feelings of isolation, and is a double entendre on the state of lost souls everwhere.
B1, “Noisy Neighbours,” evokes that “thump” Hard Wax once labeled some of Isaac’s tracks. Created in response to noise complaints, a coded reference to Trump supporters, and even Isaac’s world football allegiances it could be categorized “deep house techno” but this ain’t no tech house. Heavy kicks bump over choped up live percussion as a lone pad keeps it deep, and then an analog bassline reveals the underground, grooving along to vocal drops that demand the listener to “Stop, look and listen.”
Lastly with B1, “A Paradox Now!” Isaac’s love for titles derived from word play refers this time to Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film “Apocalypse Now!” The track teases with mellow keys laid over strong 909 drums and a prominent minimal bassline as it builds slowly over panned high hats. However, it then flips from chill to bumping as a live percussion sample arrives along with a repeated Terre Thaemlinz influenced vocal that proceeds to drive the track to its peak.
