SKYLAX 136 arrives in the form of a killer EP from none other than Lady Blacktronika. Most will know her from her own imprint, Sound Black Recordings, where she has served up some of the best deep house and slo-mo beatdown to come from the US since the label’s inception in 2010. Such a stellar output has led many to refer to her as the ‘First Lady’ of both the genres she frequents, and with this new offering of pure-grade deep house, she shows no sign of letting go of that title. Right Direction’ begins with a stuttering piano stab pattern that could mislead people into thinking they are in for a seven minute long throwback to yesteryear. However, before the thought begins to linger, Lady Blacktronika introduces her signature stamp of deepness and soul with chilling pad sounds and vocal slices. The mood is carried forward into ‘Deee With It (How Do You Say)’, where layers upon layers of percussion give it that extra bite to ride above a bassline that you will be dying to hear on a club system, all whilst sacrificing none of the inherent deep nature of the track. Flipping over to the B side, ‘Cheat & Lie’ is one of those tracks which can suit any time of the day (or night). The moody vibe it evokes is a product of each element working together harmoniously in the mix; the wide kick drum, swirling chords and soulful vocal cuts show that Lady B knows her way around the studio. The EP closes with ‘Fantasize Me’, another solid piece which rounds off the release perfectly. Here, Lady B proves that less is more by keeping out any ancillary elements so that the main features of the track can flourish on their own.

Glenn Astro returns to Tartelet Records with Purple, a four-tracker of minimal slow burners and futuristic dance music, marking the label’s 50th 12-inch release. Since releasing his second album Homespun in late 2020, Glenn Astro has been quietly channeling his funky instincts towards new production approaches. Purple, a four-piece compilation of mutant future-boogie daubed in Rogers-Nelson hues, comes through with emotional heft. It also marks the 50th 12" release for Tartelet Records. “Following up on Homespun, I wanted to try out some more dancefloor- oriented tracks again,” says Glenn Astro. “Keeping it simple and practical, while not being too predictable. I incorporated a lot of modular synth bits and experiments, with ‘Flux’ being an almost exclusively modular-based jam.” Incorporating tricky sound design and fluid structures, Astro’s new lines of enquiry never come at the expense of the groove. From the opening thump of ‘Penduloop’ onwards it’s apparent that his rugged rhythmic kinks are present and correct to hook in the dancers, while the melodic drops later in the track edge in a little melancholic flavour to take the mind somewhere else entirely. On this opening track, the artist explores new territory with his version of early naughties minimal house – a welcome slow burner. The EP title track ‘Purple’ slaps with purpose, not least in the Linn-esque drums and melodic bassline, but it’s a positively dreamy piece which skips on crooked beat formations and floats upwards via a multi-timbral tapestry of yearning synth shapes and robotic vocals. On ‘Out Of Office’ Glenn Astro provides a generous dose of electro nostalgia when he amps up the heavy-hearted feeling with aching string pads and electro-informed machine logic. The track becomes alive with its deep un-synced rhythms and dark bass notes, pushing further into the abyss. ‘Flux’, with its tooly feel, takes the electronic mantra further and sheds light on the source of much of Astro’s new sound palette. Crucially, even in its techiest moments, an irrepressible humanity shines through across Purple. Steppin up, steppin in. Darius Syrossian’s Moxy Muzik lets loose another bomb, this time in the form of Eskuche ‘Feelings’. The NYC producer delivers a house cut drenched in deep flavours and deft disco touches all the while maintaining a peak time dance floor energy. On the flip Andrew Kay’s remix is definitely the one that has been turning heads the most – not least because Darius unleashed it at Forbidden Forrest festival and a subsequent online video led to a flood of ID requests. It’s a 130bpm, slamming yet minimal track with monstrous breakdown and dark in your face baseline. It is impossible not to find parallels between the sound of "La Ruta Destroy" and Victor Muerte. The young Valencian presents two somewhat different tracks. Sound Of Vast welcomes the return of The Mole this November with his 'That Is Nice' EP, comprised of three typically twisted cuts from the Canadian-born Berliner.

Over the course of the past two decades Colin De La Plante, better know to most as The Mole, has unveiled numerous EP's, singles and albums via the likes of Perlon, Ostgut Ton, Slices Of Life and of course Sound Of Vast where he returns here following output in recent years from the likes of DJ Sodeyama as The People In Fog, Cinthie, Com Sin aka Cosmin TRG, Shinichiro Yokota and Akiko Kiyama from the Japanese imprint.

Opening the EP is 'Vetafit', laid out across seven a half minutes with bubbling metallic chimes, bumpy bass notes, crunchy drums and an amalgamation of intertwining plucked synth stabs. Title-track 'That Is Nice' follows, shifting focus to cut up funk licks, a walking bass line and tension building strings atop a dynamic, organic drum groove.

On the flip is '17 Day Parade' to conclude the EP, stripping things pack to punchy, modulating drums a wandering sub bass pulsations and warbling, intricately processed horns and stabs, once again we're treated to more weird and wonderful material from The Mole.

Established and loved member of the Shall Not Fade Family, Felipe Gordon turns up the jazz influence on a fresh new EP for the label. The producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Colombia is known for his complex compositions and infectious beats, and Keepin' It Jazz does not disappoint.

The record kicks off with "Analog Only" - a highly textural beat forms the core of this bass-heavy groover that cruises along at a laid back pace, drawing the listener further in. Similarly gentle but hypnotic, "Continuous Develop" has the heady ambience of the chillout room, but Gordon brings in his intricate dreamy instrumentation and acid hints to great effect.

The second half centres a tasty bass solo that will get all heads nodding along. The title track is the chunkiest of house rhythms paired with delicate jazzy piano, a gliding summer party anthem. "Looking Your Reflection In The Water" is artful, perfectly emotive and gently rising like a tide from poolside piano into a hip-moving danceable pulse. Needing no introduction, NYC-based Baltra rose with the lo-fi house scene and has become one of the most innovative producers to come out of it, constantly pushing for a fresh sound with use of organic vocals and cross-genre experimentation. Returning for a full record on Shall Not Fade for the first time since the hazy sounds of Rendezvous EP in 2019, Baltra's Dreaming Of A Disco EP focuses on impeccable instrumentals and infectious melodies.

The title track carries subtle manipulated vocalisations at the core of the melody which has a touch of romance and, later, just a hint of disco strings adding an 80s shimmer that explodes to the forefront in jangling guitar riffs. A few years ago, All Is Well visited his good friend Martin Iveson in the UK for a studio session. A few tracks were written in the analog lab but one especially stood out. It was the then unnamed Cosmos. A kind of Jean-Michel Jarre vs Norwegian Cosmic disco melting pot dictated by the odd nature of the main theme from the Korg Monopoly’s weird Paraphony, and rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. The track was left to sleep on a hard drive for a few years but never forgotten. AIW decided to bring it back to life during the first confinement in the Spring, stripping it down to its essential message. It was a natural decision to bring it to Prins Thomas’s label Internasjonal via a common friend in Ivaylo Kolev, the label manager. Remixes comes courtesy of exile Norwegian via Berlin Telephones and label boss Prins Thomas. Both Martin Iveson and All Is Well have been releasing music since the mid 90s under different names, Martin as Atjazz and All Is Well as Fred Everything. All Is Well has been released on Drumpoet Community and Permanent Vacation."

The 4th release on Sofia by KiNK is all about warmth. The harmonies are deep, the instruments are muffled, the rhythms are humanised. Even when some of the tracks are getting a bit aggressive, they are not hurting, but giving the right amount of energy and surprise. This record is built from some of the live streams Strahil was doing during the pandemic lockdown in April. “101 Reasons” is a track with disco epic-ness and techno attitude. It captures KiNK’s dream of being on the sweaty floor again, surrounded by dancers, one big family, like it used to be. “Dreamer” is low key house music, with melodies, leaking between the notes and the rhythms are somehow derailing, but instead of chaos, you get that dreamy feeling like if you watch a ribbon in the sky. The phenomenal Dutch artist Frits Wentink delivers a tighter version of the track with his unique swing on the drums and extra chords, which uplift the track with new energy. The closing song “Set The Mood Right” is recorded with his usual collaborator Rachel Row on the vocals. It’s a very relaxed downtempo track, which takes an unexpected turn and it’s a perfect open end for the record. A warm record for the cold days.
