Rochester, New York, February 25th, 2019 - 38 Spesh's buzz is running through the industry like a wild fire right now. While this MC/producer/entrepreneur is not some overnight success that just appeared on the scene, many music critics only became aware of him last year. In fact, Flour City recording artists like Eto, Pounds, and 38 Spesh have been out here delivering quality product for more than a decade. Being a native of Rochester, DJ Green Lantern has been attempting to shed light on the area's talent for 10 years+ as well. And he has consistently worked with Spesh since as far back as 2005.

Spesh was lured back to the streets while Trap was dominating the airwaves and Hip-Hop sales. But when he saw his homies like Benny The Butcher and Eto starting to make waves around 2017, he knew the time was right for a comeback. Spesh produced almost half this offering and he gets busy on the mic on all 11 joints. Guests include Fred The Godson, Benny The Butcher, Ransom, Klass Murda, Che Noir, and Green Double, and they all bring their A-game for this special affair. The obsession with race is disturbing to those that wish to divert attention away from the unyielding attributes that have plagued black America. However, we all must realize how such disenfranchisement has negatively affected us all. We are all equal and we are all human; we all have something to say and something to contribute; essentially, we all deserve to be heard, recognized and respected. That being said, our celebration of Black History Month brings us closer to understanding the struggles and contributions African Americans have made in making America what it is.

There was a time in America when Blacks weren’t free to pursue their creative endeavors. Such cultural tension led to Blacks creating the first American musical art form: Jazz. This music, the antithesis of western idealism, is what continues to inspire black music today. My work embraces this perspective, but furthermore, it serves as a reminder of how music can lay the groundwork for self-expression and cultural awareness. Embrace Black History Month and take the time to realize how black music has shaped the cultural narrative of America.

Adrian Younge has carved out an incomparable niche in the music community. He’s served as a producer, composer, studio head of Linear Labs, and owner of The Artform Studio in Highland Park, CA. Adrian, along with his production partner Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), is best known of late for work on the stellar score to the Netflix/Marvel series Luke Cage. Over the years, the versatile Younge has collaborated with artists including Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Cee Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq, and more.

2018 will mark the return of the original Bushwick Bomb Squad! Legendary emcee crew, the Arsonists have announced a double-album release via Below System Records.
This will include a deluxe edition of the group’s classic debut album “As The World Burns” (released in 1999) which yielded such underground anthems as “Blaze”, “Halloween” and the “Session.”

It will also include “Lost In The Fire”, which will include many unreleased gems including tracks with J-Live, High & Mighty and Mass Influence as well as six new tracks from the group (the first in over fifteen years!) with guest appearances from Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks) and Ill Bill (La Coka Nostra, Non-Phixion).

Composed of D-Stroy, Q-Unique, Freestyle, Jise and Swel these Brooklyn spitters were among the most creative wordsmiths and energetic live performers during an extremely fertile period of boom-bap that included the Lyricist Lounge, Rawkus Records, Fat Beats Records and the Stretch & Bobbito show. On the group’s motivation, D-Stroy revealed “we were focused so much on our love of hip-hop that it kept us off the streets, away from drugs, all of us in my parent’s house rhyming and recording.”

After appearing on the Stretch & Bobbito Show, Bobbito Garcia was so impressed as to sign the group to his Fondle ‘Em Records to release several classic singles on wax. The results allowed the crew to hit the road through North America and Europe, many of them leaving New York and the United States for the first time ever. The group toured with such notables as Public Enemy, The Roots and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Top taste-making Indie rock label Matador Records who developed such groups as Guided By Voices, Pavement and Mogwai wanted the Arsonists to be the first hip-hop group on the label. “As The World Burns” was the result of this partnership. Critically acclaimed and well respected, speaking on the enduring legacy of the album, D-Stroy said “I think it’s one of the last albums to champion the four elements of hip-hop, it’s basically our love letter to the culture and a lot of heads identify with that love.”

Though the group dissolved by 2002, the members have kept heads ringing in the entertainment industry including solo releases and forays into film, TV and radio. Summing it up D recalls “I was hosting an event for Nike and one of the executives came up to me and spit one of Q-Unique’s verses verbatim to me. It’s like a whole generation of young heads and college students grew up on our music and are doing something for the movement as well.”

Mi Vida Local might be the best album Atmosphere’s ever made. It’s definitely the one they needed to make right now, and one listeners need to hear just as urgently. If it’s sometimes an album about how the fight to find happiness never really ends–even after you get the house and the kids and the artistic freedom to make dad-rap records–it’s also about discovering that there’s happiness to be found just in fighting.

In an interview released to Billboard in 2017, east coast veteran AZ explains how this collaboration with legendary DITC producer Buckwild came along:
"The sound was shifting. A lot of brothers in the street were telling me "You got to save us." And I'm like, "Save y'all from what?" So I took that title to save the people, then Buckwild played a joint in the studio called "Save Them," and I was like, "This is it."
The two don't really need no introduction: with the Brooklyn lyricist gracing the mic since the mid 90's beginning with one of his first appearances alongside Nas on "Life's A Bitch" and dropping legendary classics such as "Doe Or Die", and the Bronx producer providing beats to artists that range from old school acts such as The Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, modern day legends such as Vinnie Paz, Meyhem Lauren, Termanology and, last but not least, legendary DITC members Big L, Fat Joe, Diamond D and the list goes on and on.
AZ had to recruit "some brothers who I know respect the craft" and found them in Wu-Tang Clan's own Raekwon alongside the late great Prodigy of Mobb Deep. The song was released in April 2017 and brought a breath of fresh air with its classic vibe, together with a video being released just days before Prodigy's untimely passing in June 2017. The rest, you already know, is straight up hip-hop history.
Tuff Kong Records teamed up with Mr. Anthony Best aka Buckwild to bring this legendary track on wax as a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. The first 200 are pressed on bronze marbled vinyl and come with a limited edition patch and die-cut sticker, 300 on clear red vinyl and the remaining 500 on black vinyl.

The collective has completed many tours together, and its debut album Escape From New York comes across as a collection of high level cyphers from Joey Bada$$, Nyck Caution, Kirk Knight, CJ Fly, Flatbush Zombies & more. ‘Oak Dreams’ is the third collaborative release from London-based lyricist Benny Diction and Melbourne producer Able8, following their ‘Spring' EP and ‘Life Moves’ album. The seeds of the project were sown one August, when Benny chose to swap the English summer for the Australian winter and essentially move in with Able for a month.

Between shows, tram rides and copious bowls of laksa, the pair set about putting together their third release. The process was different from previous projects as working in the same physical space facilitated a more direct dialogue between them, allowing Benny to have more input on production.

Although they initially had more fresh recordings, they eventually eschewed quantity for quality to narrow it down to these 6 tunes.

The EP begins with ‘Connected’, Benny’s opening bar serving as a concise comment on his climatical exchange at the time: ‘It’s scarves in August, so we warm it up’. This then segues into ‘Round Again’, where he delivers a double-time flow over a Wurlitzer-driven trap instrumental, concluding with the closing line: ‘In this short life, I spread love, knowing in due time, it comes round again’.

This is followed by ‘FFWD’, where Benny is joined by Perth-based emcee Mathas to analyse the advancements that have been made in society, along with the advantages and disadvantages that they entail. Benny’s focus is technology, whilst Mathas’ is medicine. The EP then takes a break from the vocal tunes with the haunting instrumental track ‘All Year Round’, again revisiting the ideas of seasons and cycles introduced earlier on.

The following tune, ‘Oak Dreams’, on which the EP is based, finds Benny drawing parallels between the growth of trees from seeds and the creative process, bringing thoughts and ideas to fruition and manifesting them in reality, inspired after Able sent Benny the euphoric, uplifting instrumental of the same name. The project then concludes with closing track ‘On Balance’, where Benny exchanges bars with longtime collaborator MNSR Frites about the proverbial plate spinning they perform as part and parcel of London living.

Oak Dreams also features cuts from veteran turntablists Rasp and Sugai, as well as contributions from musician friends who bring live flute, saxophone and guitar to the mix. Benny even plays keys on a couple of tunes!

After the release of debut record Gris-Gris, Dr. John found himself in a strange and awkward position. The US was deep into the Vietnam War, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were fresh in the public memory. On top of that, Dr. John was being pursued by various Los Angeles authorities for a handful of criminal offenses. It was, in his own words: "a heavy time for me." Much like Sly & The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On, Dr. John's follow-up album Babylon would be a reflection of the chaotic and tumultuous time that he was living in. He and band dove deeper into the voodoo-inflected psychedelic rock and R&B of Gris-Gris, while touching upon elements of free jazz and Captain Beefheart-style avant garde. As with his debut record, production was handled by the legendary Harold Battiste, and much of the same session personnel who performed on it returned for Babylon, including Plas Johnson on saxophone, Alvin Robinson on guitar, and backing vocals from Jessie Hill, Shirley Goodman, and Tami Lynn. Babylon stands out as one of Dr. John's most overtly political albums, and is a singularly murky and darkly entrancing record in his discography. A psychedelic swamp of apocalyptic lyrical content, drunk, disorienting experimentation, and a fascinating entry into Dr. John's catalogue well-worthy of his expansive legacy. Get On Down is all too eager to reissue this unique record for Record Store Day Black Friday, which has not been repressed on vinyl in over 40 years. In keeping with the album's hallucinogenic sound, it is presented on trippy splattercolored vinyl, and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket.Shuggie Diamonds is my ‘singing’ and ‘more soulful’ alter ego, so the title The Diamond Report is based off that. With decades in the game, the Gang Starr Foundation co-founder continues to sound hungry and passionate with his art, and it’s led to one of his strongest album showings yet. After delivering smooth vocals on the opening track, Shug hits your ear like a freight train on the bombastic “EMF” that’s produced by longtime collaborator DJ Premier. A lyrical middle-finger to “every motherf*cker” who’s ever doubted or crossed him, the single also received the video treatment from director Myster DL. It puts the focus directly on Shug and his rhymes, and it actually sets the tone for the remainder of The Diamond Report. At 20 tracks deep, the album plays like a highlight reel of all of Shug’s artistic strengths. On “Doing My Sh*t,” he kicks back and oozes confidence as he croons over the Thir(13)teen-produced instrumental. And then on the Lil Fame-produced “Keep It Cool,” he’s back in bruiser mode alongside M-Dot, B.A.M and International Dreez. Shug also embodies the wise hip-hop sage on several cuts, including standouts “Old Man Rapper” and closer “You Ain’t About It.” But it’s on the lyrically charged “Stay The Course” that everything hits hardest. With Elevated Music’s snarling beat as his canvas, Shug takes aim at Trump, big ups Colin Kaepernick, and spits rewind-worthy bars like: “I still hustle, that’s how I was raised/ When I started out they said rap was a phase/ 20 years later, I still get paid/ While some of y’all clowns, still get played.” It’s a powerful reminder of exactly who Shug is, where he comes from, why he’s still here, and why everyone needs to be paying attention. Black Uhuru first formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru (Swahili for 'freedom'). Over the years the group has undergone several line-up changes with Derrick "Duckie" Simpson as the mainstay. As a unique singer in his own right, Delroy "Junior" Reid had the opportunity to reach a wider international audience when he was offered the chance to be the lead singer in Black Uhuru in 1986. Jr. Reid was from the same area of Kingston, shared a similar vocal style and already had a reputation for writing strong reality lyrics. After joining the group, Jr. Reid elevated the group to another level delivering militant songs such as Let Us Pray and Dread In The Mountain. Songs as these taken from the "Brutal" sessions, sung over typically robust rhythms from Sly & Robbie, tailored to fit in with developments on the international scene whilst upholding Black Uhuru’s penchant for uncompromising roots music with the emphasis on tight, forward-thinking arrangements.
