Hamburg based producer and drummer Silvan Strauss counts as one of the outstanding new
European jazz drummers who can easily shapeshift between jazz and its varieties ranging into urban
contemporary music. In the last years he successfully worked with the likes of Maria João, Soweto
Kinch, Omer Klein, Guinga, Farhot, Jazzrausch Bigband, Nils Landgren, Till Brönner. Strauss
channels the immense input gained by all the different collaborations into his own project Toytoy
where he produces and closely works with his band mates on their vision of experimental groove
music. Recently awarded with the Hamburg Jazz Award Strauss finally takes the step towards
releasing his very own solo-project “Facing” – it’s title paying tribute to the extraordinary mimics that
many drummers share. Curated alongside Kabul Fire Records founder Farhot this instrumental album
in hiphop/urban jazz fashion complements KFR-Releases in a very special way as Strauss represents
the organic and analogue side of beatmaking.

Description : Three continents collide on 'Runaway', the latest single from Mozambican rapper / vocalist Simba Sitoi, featuring Canada's Kardinal Offishall, remixed by the UK's Chris Read. Simba Sitoi is a key player in the Hip Hop scene in his native Mozambique, where his vocals in both English and Portugese have graced releases including a full length album for UK stalwarts BBE Records. Kardinal Offishall is a 5 x winner at the Juno Awards (Canada's equivalent of the Grammys) and has collaborated with a host of artists including the likes of Scott Storch, Sean Paul and Eminem. London based producer Chris Read's production and remix credits include Grammy Award winning vocalist Bilal, BBC New Music Award winners Maylight and Hip Hop legends The Pharcyde.

The back story to this cross-continental collaboration features A Tribe Called Quest, Mozambique's colonial past and Nando's chicken. In 2018, Nando's flew Kardinal Offishal to Mozambique to film a short documentary exploring the history of the restaurant's Peri Peri sauce, an accompaniment to grilled chicken first developed by Portugese settlers in Mozambique. While filming, Kardinal visited Simba's studio to find out more about the regional music scene. The two vocalists hit it off and, in an unplanned studio session, 'Runaway', a track inspired by the UK's Broken Beat sound, was recorded. Simba had previously worked with Chris Read when he remixed Simba and Milton Gulli's cover version of A Tribe Called Quest's 'Scenario' for BBE Records back in 2013. Chris was enlisted to remix the track and has delivered a version which features Broken drums, a Latin flavored bassline and horns that add Dub feel.

Sir E.U compliments this fully, with a surprising range of melody and bizarro hooks, as in the demented pop highlights “mua” and “How Much Longer (Until We Go Get Em).” The sheer sonics of his voice and breadth of his expression, which he is manipulating and re-inventing constantly throughout Bop 3, are wonderful on their own, but Sir E.U is also straight up one of the greatest rappers doing it today; his styles and flows are constantly stunning, and each EP or track release via his own channels becomes a fountain of inspiration for anybody rapping right now. You can hear E.U in many rappers today, well beyond his local Washington DC. Bop 3 is a full-length exploration of the potent duo of Sir E.U + Tooth Choir, in sync to a serious degree, making some of the wildest rap music imaginable.

The pendulum of life swings from simple to complicated and swoops across everything in between. If the devil is in the details, the true meaning is in the grey areas. Whilst the quest for nuance is noble, sometimes, it pays to be intentional with your target and get to the point. For their first collaborative project, Str8 Shot, Gary "Sivion" Watson and Maurice "malex" Alexander aim, fire and spit with a barrage of hard-hitting Hip Hop that will inspire new and old heads alike. Across the beats and rhymes, the duo showcases kin-like chemistry, which extracts depth from simplicity. The opening salvo on Str8 Shot is like a special ops assignment meets manifesto. Heavy Gunner introduces MALEX's spaced-out Blade Runner-esque bounce, where Sivion shoots for the stars while swinging "a hot sword of the spirit". The experimental production and Sivion's staccato style sound like a chauffeur-driven ride in the Delorean from Back To The Future. Sivion then links up with long-time collaborator Braille and the Dallas freestyle king, Infored, on the latest single, Come Through Me. All three pilots plot a flight course to a higher level of mental liberation. MALEX's mischievous bleeps and blips encapsulate push-and-pull energy. The cheeky bop, in turn, opens up Sivion, Braille and Infored to go all the way in with a call and response flows while calling out pretentious folks prone to take the bait of what this world supposedly has to offer. The firing squad take a breather to reload their bullets on Straight Cool featuring Mokah Soulfly. Sivion, Malex and their fellow gunners shoot the breeze straight to the milky way and write bars on Mars. With live bass from the masterful Nigel Rivers (Erykah Badu, Royce Da 5'9" and Eric Roberson), sonically, the track converges with genuine reflections of their come-ups, tinges of otherworldliness and dashes of a five-star resort turn-down service. Pressed ON Galaxy Ice-colored Vinyl With A 12-page Booklet Smoky Hustler music by North Memphis's Skinny Pimp, a former member of Three 6 Mafia recorded in 1993 and originally released on cassette. This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to produce some of the most distinctive music of the 90s. This was a unique hip-hop strain - visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cassette-tape based movement - yet it went on to change the course of rap music. These albums have never been pressed on vinyl - until now. From Skinny Pimp and Carmike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the proverbial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their first LP iterations. You can read the story of the Memphis Rap scene in a 12-page, oversized booklet with notes by Torii MacAdams. It captures the story of Memphis rap starting with the cityís founding and ending with an auto supply shop that sold these albums over the counter, with all points in between.

With Retropolitan, Skyzoo’s most recent collaborative project with Pete Rock, he got to live out a dream, as two generations of legendary native New Yorkers aligned to create an album that was both a love letter and a wakeup call to the city they love. Now, with The Bluest Note, Skyzoo is checking another box on his bucket list. “Since my debut album, I’ve never released a project that didn’t include a moment of jazz influence; with some sort of live instrumentation, something that connected my lyricism with the truest definition of musical lyricism; jazz” Skyzoo commented. “As much as I’ve incorporated my favorite genre of music with my other favorite genre of music, this is the first time I’ve been able to craft an entire project based on jazz production from top to bottom” Skyzoo quipped. “The Bluest Note is a testament to something I’d been longing to do for as far back as I can remember.” In 2017, Sky was touring in Italy and met the Tuff Kong Records team, who recruited Dumbo Station to bring Skyzoo’s vision to life and in June 2019 Skyzoo was in Rome writing, composing and recording music with the talented musicians. “Collaborating with Italy’s renowned jazz band Dumbo Station was an absolute honor. From writing musical arrangements with them and having them bring them to life in the studio in Rome, Italy; it was a perfect union and execution of what I foresaw when I began to sketch out the project. Six songs, as an homage to the classic jazz albums of the genre’s heyday (when LPs were around six tracks total). The Bluest Note is the storytelling and inner-city expressions you’ve come to know and love from me, attached to the jazz orchestration I’m dying to introduce to some and re-introduce to others. The idea for this project came from me noticing the landscape of how fathers are represented in hip hop. Outside of Will Smith’s classic “Just the Two Of Us” and a handful of others, the majority of the records in hip hop that speak on fatherhood have a negative connotation. I wanted to change that narrative, as it’s not the only one that exists. Myself being a father, there are a ton of others like me who are engulfed in hip hop and are also 24 hour a day dads, whose kids mean the world to them. I wanted to showcase that. I started this project in august of 2019 as one song, and it grew into an entire project within a week, and I’ve been sitting on this idea since the summer/fall, waiting for Father’s Day weekend to come around.

This is a conceptual EP, where each song is a story that holds hands with the ones before and after it, all about my life as a kid, growing up with my father always in my life, and how that’s now shaped me as a father myself. It’s named “Milestones”, after my son Miles, and also signifying the milestones that us dads reach in life as we grow into fatherhood. This project is solely about growing Up with a dad, being a dad, and the importance of it all. To all the fathers out here who are lovingly and actively doing the work, this one is for us. -Skyzoo
