I used to spin for Nanosphere Complex, which comprised of Ash-Trai & Z-9, in the mid 90’s; I used to spin and jointly manage their group The Idiots in the late 90’s; the first release on Herring featured Rod Hotley/ly on the cult classic ‘Out To Lunch’ in 2001 and Herring released Burgundy Blood’s debut album ‘Suede Comet’ in 2014 and their debut EP ‘Cordial Stance’ in 2013. So without any cynicism or hi jinx of any kind, I can honestly say, this rare musibiz collaboration which has lasted a few years shy of 30 years, has been the most fulfilling I’ve had in the game [wipes tear from eye, then wipes ass, as writing this on the bog]. Ladies and germs, I give you, the very lovely, the extremely fluffy, the Benedict Cumbabubbly, Burgundy Blood and their brand new planet-saving album ‘The Fall Of Man’.

"And here we are – the end of another year of Herring fillets. To celebrate we have an EP of 6 unreleased joints from IBM Nation member Mac G outta Philadelphia. Hardcore collectors will know IBM Nation from their 1990 grail the Brainiac EP which dropped on small indie label Inner City Recs back in the deezy. Unfortunately Mac G had a couple of his crazy nice solo demo tapes stolen from his studio by a shady acquaintance. Those tapes appeared on Ebay shortly afterwards and sold for crazy loot [2k+]. We’re hoping that one day the new owner of those 1992 – 1994 demo tapes will hit us up to share them with the fans, on a limited vinyl Herring release. But what we do have here are his extra dope unreleased mid 90’s demos. Peep the snippets and we’ll be back 1st week of January with the final vinyl release of the Dec/Jan Cycle as well as 4 new CD releases. Another quickstrike from this damn fresh new label straight outta the Kiezes of Berlin. Each volume is dedicated to the Kiez (hood) and beats of a contemporary beatsmith which equals KEATS. After the much loved Volume 1 (Moabit) by Figub Brazlevic Q-Cut steps up to the plate an delivers a totally different take.
This one is called ‚Kaiju Dugu‘ and is not exactly dealing with his neighborhood (called Kiez) itself but the arrival of giant monsters (Kaiju) in his hood. The festivities (Dugu) surrounding this arrival give the inspiration to the dark soundscape of this Keats issue. It is obscure, gloomy and challenges the brain with twisted rhythm patterns, somwhere between, beneath or besides Madlib, El-P or Flying Lotus. Hundreds of records, a sampler and occasionally a Microkorg are the tools of choice, the ‚Kaiju Dugu‘ illustraion is by Q-Cut as well, the fresh frame is provided by V.Raeter as usual and Donald & Rave keep the Keats dropping, so what?!

As a long-time fan of People Under The Stairs and Damu The Fudgemunk, this is a full-circle moment for Soul Supreme. He deejayed alongside Damu in the past, and he has shown his appreciation to both P.U.T.S. and Damu with various tribute mixes. Matter of fact, this release is a full-circle moment for any hip-hop head: this 45 marks the very first time Thes One and Damu can be heard on one record together.

In typical crate-digging fashion, Thes One flips key elements from Soul Supreme's "Taking The Stand" into a neck-snapping beat. The instrumental album version of "Taking The Stand" can be found on the B-side of this 45. The original is a beautifully melodic jazz-funk head-nodder featuring drums by Tamuz Dolev and a spirited guitar solo by Radiohop's Johnny Biner.

We’ve been working together since 2008, but this is our first official album.” Awash in Shafiq’s dense sonic architecture, Out Of The Blue showcases the intricacy of Blu’s spiritual street talk while simultaneously delivering a series of bass-heavy L.A. anthems. Crane City Music is proud to release Bobby Ro$$ from accomplished Seattle rapper and visual artist Perry Porter. His first full-length, Bobby Ro$$ is a vibe-heavy hustle through the landscape of art, blackness, and self-love. On it, he inhabits the alter ego of Bobby Ro$$, the trap music avatar of the much-loved PBS painter, Porter uses snippets of interviews with cultural luminaries such as Kara Walker, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Maya Angelou as a narrative lattice to paint himself into the canon of black art.

Originally from Tacoma, Washington—by way of rural Spanaway—Porter grew up playing drums and rapping over his own beats. His first foray into hip-hop was as half of buzzy local duo Sleep Steady, who received much acclaim in the Pacific Northwest and placed two songs in major video game titles (EA Sports UFC 2 and Cyberpunk 2077). He has since released several solo mixtapes, including 2018’s critically-acclaimed Channel Surfing mixtape.

As a visual artist, Porter’s dreamlike watercolor portraits and lush murals have been shown in galleries across the country. His notable collectors include several NFL Seahawks players. He incorporates live painting into his performances and is currently planning a 30-city pop-up painting tour of record stores for Spring 2020.

Bobby Ro$$ is the seventh record in the Crane City Music collection, a library of the hottest recent hip-hop albums from the Pacific Northwest on wax. The record assembles a wide variety of Seattle- and Tacoma-area talent, including producers Chong The Nomad, Jamie Blake, and Khris P, alongside rappers Blake Anthony, Romaro Franceswa, and Jarv Dee. The Crane City “Black Excellence” edition of Bobby Ro$$ is limited to 250 copies on black vinyl and features a cover designed by visual artist Izzy Vibes and liner notes by music journalist Martin Douglas.

Perry Porter has opened for national touring artists such as Joey Badass, SuperDuperKyle, and The Flavr Blue, and performed to sold-out crowds at 2019’s Capitol Hill Block Party music festival.

We are excited to present Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes’ “What Kinda Music” – an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date.

Moving fluidly through sleek electronica, avant-garde jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Misch and Dayes take you on a journey that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling – a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results, as can be seen in the title track, which comes backed by a gorgeously atmospheric video by XX.

Even though the fundamental bones of this project came together very quickly, its actual provenance stretches back much, much farther back, with the pair not only growing up in the same area of South East London, but Misch actually seeing Dayes play on drums in the school talent show for the first time when he was roughly 8 or 9. They both kept tabs on each other – Misch becoming a fan of Dayes’ act Yussef Kamaal, Dayes clocking his videos in 2014 – but it was only when they met at a launch party for Misch’s debut LP “Geography” in 2018 that the proverbial creative sparks began to fly. “As a musician you’re always looking for contemporaries who can push you and challenge you and make you better”, says Dayes. “I instantly felt that with Tom – he was such a gifted musician, and so prolific”. That summer they decided to go into the studio together, jam a little, and see what happens, with no other expectation placed upon it.

As it turns out, the music came fast and furiously. Two initial tracks were suddenly followed by a handful of others, and the pair found themselves contemplating what to do next. “Pretty soon, we knew that something was gelling”, Dayes says. “It didn’t feel like a one-off collaboration, it felt like a body of work”. What made the pair click, according to Misch and Dayes, were the exact same factors that meant it shouldn’t, by all rights, work. Misch says, “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible”. And certainly, in “What Kinda Music” you can sense the DNA of both musicians, but fusing so effortlessly and beautifully that it creates something else entirely, the appropriately named “Lift Off” sending goosebumps with its jazz flecked crescendo, and “Night Rider” hynotising with its deeply mesmeric grooves. “I have a love for harmony and chords”, Misch adds. “Working with someone like Yussef, who has such a gifted sense of rhythm allowed a perfect balance”.

Throughout the record, there is an utterly joyful feel of two musicians at the top of their game sparking off one another, picking up ideas and running with them – zigging where the other zags, ebbing where the other flows, with Misch producing the majority of the record and both having a hand in the overall sound and feel of the record.

“Working with Yussef has actually changed the way I work as a musician”, Misch muses. “He’s pushed me and unlocked a more experimental part of me that I hadn’t really allowed myself to explore before. I think we really did impact each other in a fundamental way”. Dayes is similarly effusive in his praise for Misch. “A musician like him, who’s at the top of his game, he doesn’t need to do this”, he raves. “He can just keep doing the same thing and why not? He’s killing it. The fact that he’s so humble, that he’s so curious about everything and open to collaboration, speaks a lot to him as an artist, because it’s not easy finding musicians who want to collaborate. Something always gets in the way, whether it’s ego or their team or whatever. But with Tom it felt like the intention was purely creative, and that’s what made it exciting”. In fact, Dayes says that the intentions of the record go even deeper than just music. “Both our parents who’d never met each other before, are now best friends as a result of this, they now see each other more than we do! I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way”.

Rap fans the world over know him for his verse on "?," one of the standout songs from his longtime friend and collaborator MF DOOM's heralded Operation: Doomsday. As he prepares for the release of his new album, Majician-the nickname his peers blessed him with a generation ago-Kurious is well on his way to establishing the legacy he's long deserved. The LP, which was executive produced by MF DOOM before his passing, is a mesmerizing blend of technical wizardry and personal introspection. Take "Eye of Horus," where the pulsing drums convey an urgency that borders on panic; Kurious weaves a complex tapestry of history and insight, but does so while ducking through and under each pocket in the beat. Produced in its entirety by Mono En Stereo, Majician is filled with songs like "Eye of Horus," which dance on the line between confession and confrontation. "Separation Anxiety" is a personal bloodletting in the form of lyrical exercise; "Par For the Course," which features the exlusive Mr. Fantastik, makes drum breaks from the early Reagan era sound totally revitalized. "Down To Earth" marked the debut album by Chicago's very own Grav. Originally released in 1996, the deep-voice MC flows on productions by No I.D., Dug Infinite, Big Q and a young Kanye West. Album guests include Al' Tariq and Lil Ray as well as DJ Nu-Mark on the cuts.

Underground lyrical terrorist, Grav, is among Chi town's most jovial and modest rappers. His personality is a blend of tranquillity and sangfroid, whether he's belting out razor sharp metaphors or head-nodding in time with a hip hop DJ. He grew up in Harlem when hip hop's street poets began taking a firm hold on the minds and hearts of New York's disenfranchised urban youth. He often journeyed to a park within the Lincoln Projects at 135th Street between Fifth and Madison avenues to hear such emerging hip hop artists as Doug E. Fresh beat box or rhyme. Grav remembers a special camaraderie emanating from those park jam sessions. "Everybody just grew up being cool with everybody," he says. "It was like a second family." In 1992, Grav moved to the Midwest to major in computer animation and sound engineering at the Art Institute of Chicago. Once he got to the Windy City, Grav decided to settle in the section of town referred to as Wicker Park. Wicker Park is the Midwest equivalent of Greenwich Village with it's ultra bohemian clubs, art galleries, cafes, bookstores, and theaters. Grav was then introduced to the city's underground hip hop scene through his roommate, Free. Grav spent most of his days with his head buried deep in his university school books to master the heavy scholastic work load. But his nights were spent flexing in freestyle sessions and ripping ciphers to shreds at clubs with an open mic night. He took on the name "Grav" when he teamed up with rapper, Magpie. In 1993, the two of them organized the group Indigenous Theory. Commenting on his unique moniker, Grav says, "My name reflects my down to earthness with people and how they react to me when I perform. I'm not just up there kicking lyrics. There's something in my style that attracts people to me, like the force of Gravity." Eventually Grav went solo when the group broke up in 1994. During this time Grav decided to seriously enter the rap game and lie concentrated on captivating audiences with the machine gun rhythm of his incredible flow and delivery at the legendary B Side Café. Grav rapidly graduated from headliner to host, with shows on Chicago's underground rap circuit. His debut album "Down To Earth" adds to the handful of projects that Grav already has on his plate, like rhyming on countless underground mix tapes and contributing to producer No.ID album (beat maker supreme for Common, Al Tariq, etc.).

King Tone aka Alamo (born Wilfredo Nunez) is a hip hop musician, born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Inspired by the golden age of hip hop, Tone gained an interest in music at a time when groups like N.W.A, Public Enemy and EPMD were pushing boundaries.

By 1991, when Tone had already written and recorded numerous projects independently, he was introduced to "Lenny Grace" aka "AFTAMAF" another local MC/Producer from the Providence Area which was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Aftamaf's ability to create music using everything from live instruments, to the SP-12 and MPC paired with King Tone's "paint you a picture you can listen to" kind of flow proved to be the perfect combination. They were able to create classics like "Rhyme and Punishment" and "Victims of da Streets" in 1997 along with countless other hip-hop gems that remain unreleased. Around that time "MAF" went on to become one of the founding members of Blank Fasiz and D.U.N.A.T Productions while Tone continued to pursue his career as a solo artist.

Reggie Gibson, better known as Saafir, is an MC, producer and actor from Oakland, California and a member of the rap group "Golden State Project" (formerly known as Golden State Warriors) with Ras Kass and Xzibit. In the early 90's Saafir lived with 2Pac and became a dancer for Digital Underground. In August of 1992 Saafir appeared on the Unsigned Hype column in the Source where they reviewed a 3-track demo he submitted, one of those early tracks "Prime Time After Seven" is also included here. Saafir made his recording debut on Digital Underground's The Body-Hat Syndrome released in 1993 where he appeared on several cuts. The same year Saafir appeared in the classic film Menace II Society as Harold Lawson, and was featured on the movie soundtrack. After securing a deal with Qwest Records in 1994, Saafir recruited the Hobo Junction production team (J Groove, J.Z., Rational, Big Nose, and Poke Martian) for his debut album "Boxcar Sessions" and here he came into his own completely shifting more towards his own abstract style both vocally and lyrically. We have 3 extra tracks in comparison to the 2002 Cd-r issue and more importantly a thorough remastering of the tracks has been done that shows a definite improvement. Limited to 400 copies total.

Through this new persona, DJ Gawad pulls back the curtain to reveal himself as the protagonist of the mixtape-like album, as replete with features as it is with expletives, an enigmatic ghoul in the back of the studio with an endless supply of broken sample flips, giving the album its old school feel while still speaking to contemporary hip hop aesthetics.
A Jordanian/Palestinian Memphis gangster rap parody par excellence, the album is infused with satirical commentary on the state of the contemporary music scene, yet DJ Gawad shows as much as he tells, expertly fashioning a sound that makes you wonder about the identity of the artist behind the braggadocious persona of the self-titled "best producer in the Middle East."
Drawing heavily from the Memphis rap mixtapes of the mid 1990s, DJ Gawad has clearly identified the same brooding atmosphere in his own surroundings. On Mat3'anish (feat. Bleng & Fara7) DJ Gawad makes his most explicit reference to the Memphis sound, twisting the hallmark cowbells that defined that movement to reflect the equally raw nature of his own setting.
Similarly, in Bandana (feat. Jurum), DJ Gawad finds the perfect tension between his romantic sampling tendencies and the brutal sensibilities of his featured artist. As if liberated by DJ Gawad's anonymity and irreverence, his menagerie of artists appear to have been emboldened, embracing the obscene free naturedness of the album, setting their lyrical prowess free to wander.
No expense was spared in the post production treatment of DJ Gawad's debut, with Iraqi-American artist Mark Gergis incorporating the Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck in the mastering process, as is evidenced by the crisp saturation of the album's sonics.

Tony D was a legendary Italian American Hip Hop Producer & Emcee from New Jersey. He was well known for his production of the conscious groundbreaking Hip Hop group Poor Righteous Teachers along with YZ, Black Prince & Aziatic, Blvd. Mosse, Scott Lark and many others. The title is meant to signify that both my father’s and my upbringing, though so different, are linked by a shared history that informs the way I move through the world. Although his formative years were spent in the Jim Crow era of the south, where he suffered through poverty and racial oppression, and mine were shaped in the heart of DC, amidst the war on drugs and the effects of its fallout, the album finds points of connection in two very different yet tragically familiar stories of Blackness in America. It’s a sonic reflection of the things we inherit. About the emotional weight that we unknowingly bestow upon the next generation; the genetic transfer of both trauma and triumph that we, both donors and beneficiaries, are tasked with reshaping into a future of our own."

The Sharecropper’s Daughter album is entirely produced by a veteran renaissance man from the Atlanta Hip Hop scene, Sol Messiah, with the exception of "Deliverance" produced by Evidence and co-produced by Al B Smoov. And, while Sa-Roc’s crafty wordplay, razor-sharp delivery and exceptional writing are the prominent highlight, this undeniable quality is only further enhanced by stellar guest performances from a small, but formidable, all-star cast of guests, including Saul Williams, Styles P, Ledisi, Chronixx, and Black Thought.

This Fall, Sa-Roc seeks to demand her rightful place at the table amongst rhyme royalty with The Sharecropper’s Daughter, at a time when the world is clamoring for powerful voices of substance, along with a patient and attentive fanbase who have already been tuned in, waiting for this moment.
