Boot Camp Clik’s Smif-N-Wessun performs their classic hits with the Czech Republic based band, Champion Sound, live in Prague. Tek N’ Steel first stormed the masses with hardcore rhymes and a flawless ability to trade the mic without hesitation. The underground hip-hop group Missin' Linx was led by Al Tariq (formerly the Beatnuts' Fashion) and also included Black Attack, and Problemz among its core ranks. Their debut single M.I.A. produced by Vic with the B-Side Lock’d, produced by Necro became an instant hit in the Hip Hop scene of the 90s. Using as sample from David McCallum called “The Edge” the song captured the ears of many fans and producers.

Everyone has heard Dr. Dre’s 2001, even if you aren’t a fan of rap music and the single “Next Episode” which was one of the most iconic songs of its decade. Before Dr. Dre released his version of the sample, another artist beat him to the punch. M.I.A. released by “Missin Linx” in 1998, almost a full year before Dr. Dre released his sample of the beat. The co-producer of the track, Mel Man frequently visited the Fat Beats LA store when the Missin Linx song was circulating.

The popular single is now available on seven inch for a limited time paying homage to the classic Hip Hop scene of the nineties.

At 14 years old, Funky DL and his older brother permanently moved from living with their Mother in Hackney to living with their Father in London’s Borough of Newham. It was this significant change that would begin to shape the most formative years of his transition from childhood into adulthood and his relentless pursuit into the world of music.

In the heart of Stratford, East London, a two bedroom apartment in a towering 22 story building was to permanently become DL’s new home. Lyrically encapsulating DL’s experiences between 1992 and 2005, from the first track, “Moving In” to the final song, “Moving Out”, this is a remarkably personal Funky DL album, aptly titled after the name of the building... DENNISON POINT.

LIFE AFTER DENNISON:
After an incredibly warm reception from the fans of the auto-biographical November 2018 release "Dennison Point", Funky DL returns precisely one year later with the sequel, "Life After Dennison". Keeping in theme with vocal accompanied breaks, the album explores topics such as, racism, discrimination, family, friendship, education, conflict, hardship, good fortune and the life lessons gained from them all. The focus sits firmly on the lyrical aspect of the album moreover the beats, however DL's trademark sound still weaves through and compliments the rhetoric throughout. One would think it difficult to capture so much insight into the last 14 years since moving out of Dennison Point, however, in just 30 minutes running time, the album showcases the continuation of DL's life exploits from October 10th 2005 to present day. The annexation of the 10 tracks from "Dennison Point" to "Life After Dennison" paint a vivid picture of the man behind the music and provide the backdrop of who Funky DL was, is and potentially might become. As hip-hop's online footprint began rapidly expanding in the early 2010s, acclaimed Los Angeles emcee Blu was a rising star who commanded attention. Just a few years removed from the breakthrough success of Below The Heavens and an appearance on the XXL Freshmen list, the talented wordsmith was navigating the major label system, dropping self-produced mixtapes, and working with artists like The Roots, Miguel, Flying Lotus, 9th Wonder, and more. In 2011, the mysterious album Jesus turned up on Bandcamp, uploaded by an artist calling himself "b". Soon discovered to be the latest project from Blu, the unpolished but deeply soulful collection quickly made waves on blogs and social media. Just weeks later, Jesus improbably became one of Blu's first official solo releases, and it remains a lo-fi masterpiece, with mesmerizing production by Alchemist, Madlib, Knxwledge, Hezekiah, and Blu himself. Izniz, the producer for The Madness, Ghettolandz & Burn U.N.I. [as well as being the owner of Boom Bap Nation], hit up Sham from PD and said "Yo, speak to Bob about a release", so he did. He played me some joints from an unreleased 1999 project. There were some really dope ones on there but I was like "Where are the 1996 demos, ya know, the ones submitted to The Source's Unsigned Hype section". I was told that no one had them anymore. So unsurprisingly I was a little disappointed. I mean there was some niceness in the late 90's stash but it was those elusive demos that the heads were really feenin for.

Some time went by and one day I noticed someone was displaying a copy of the actual demo tape that the group had lost online. I hit dude up immediately and he was mad cool and knew Herring and very kindly offered to do a high quality rip of the material. And WOW. The material is absolute fiya. What we have here are all the tracks off the 1996 demo tape that the artists no longer have, plus one Absolute monster track from the late 90's. You tell me people, but I think this one is pretty, pretty, pretty special.

Perverted Dialect are Sick Ass Sham, Waynmega (Slang) and DJ Skills. They hail from the Long Branch neighborhood of New Jersey and knew each other from around the way. The group nearly copped a deal off Violator but it never came off. Violator's loss is our gain.

A sick 10 track EP of material from Zimbabwe Legit's 2007 album House of Stone including a few instrumentals and extras, handpicked by myself for the heads. Cats will know ZL from their 1996 DJ Shadow mixed Mo Wax release 'Doin' Damage In My Native Language'. The original release dropped in 1991 on Hollywood Basic [Organized Konfusion!] and ZL are often touted as the first African hip hop act to get a US release.

This slept on project from 2007 only had a CD release and was fairly low key at the time. It is mostly produced by Raw Produce's Cadence [R.I.P.]. Little story for you. I was in Beat Street [Fulton Mall, BK] at the time of one of their massive sales. I found one of the Raw Produce EPs there for 10c a pop. I copped about 30 or 40 [!!!]. Flipped em on the bay and a few years later I was digitally accosted by Seth [Cadence] on the DWG Forum. He was like "Did you bootleg my record!!" etc etc. I explained where I got them and after a little back n forth we squashed the beef and agreed to work on something in the future. Shortly after he passed and shortly after that I hooked up with producer DJ Quazar from New England Hip Hop Massive and released the grail which included Seth's first ever recording from 1992. And here we are now...

The features on this one are massive: Mike G from the Jungle Brothers, Mad Skillz, stic.man from Dead Prez, YZ, Prince Po, Breeze Evahflowin, Apani, Emskee and Cadence himself. Beautiful, conscious, jazz infused vibes from the motherland. Stupendous stuff!!!

Big shout out to my man in Canada Gee Roc for putting Dumi [from ZL] onto Herring to make this one happen. Props to all involved!!

It wasn’t really a movement, barely even a moment, but the Daisy Age was an ethos that briefly permeated pop, R&B and hip hop. The name was coined by Long Island trio De La Soul; they claimed D.A.I.S.Y. stood for “da inner sound, y’all”, but then De La Soul said a lot of things. Playfulness and good humour were central to their 1989 debut album, which cast a long, multi-coloured shadow. The 90s, it promised, would be a lot easier going than the 80s.

Gold with Black Splatter Vinyl.It's hard to believe it's taken this long for a proper retrospective of legendary Los Angeles collective CVE. "We Represent Billions" is a crucial portrait of one of the West Coast's most low-key influential crews - a hydra-like collective of rappers, producers, designers and engineers who were key members of the Good Life Cafe's open mic scene, going on to inspire artists like Jurassic 5, Kendrick Lamar amongst many other. Initially called Chillin Villain Posse before morphing into Chillin Villain Empire in the late 1980s, they eventually centered around the core trio of Riddlore, NgaFsh and Tray-Loc. The crew were years ahead of their time, self-producing music without samples and pioneering a stream of consciousness lyrics that still sound fresh and innovative. CVE were self-sufficient and motivated from the beginning, named "Chillin Villains" because that's how they were perceived by white America.This social motivation was channeled into their groundbreaking performances at Good Life Cafe, the South Central session that evolved into Project Blowed and later on came to influence LA club night 'Low End Theory'. It was chronicled by Ava Duvernay, herself an MC in short-lived duo Figures of Speech, in her "This is the Life" documentary, where she interviewed CVE alongside Jurassic 5, Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude and Busdriver.On "We Represent Billions", we're treated to a snapshot of the CVE sound from 1993-2003, their most prolific era. The retrospective collects music from the handful of albums the crew released on their own Afterlife Recordz label (mostly as limited edition CD-R's) plus many previously unreleased tracks and highlights their untethered eccentric creativity and sheer breadth of influence. Off of the backs of the 2006 release a pair of 7-inch singles called the Shaolin Series, El Michels Affair would eventually drop the LP “Enter the 37th Chamber” in 2009, which covered classics by the Wu-Tang Clan. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the landmark full-length, Fat Beats Records is not only re-releasing the original 45s in the Shaolin Series, but will be adding to the series with choice cuts from the LP. First up is “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” a hauntingly unforgettable take on ODB’s classic single, with blaring horns and a chorus of children to sing the iconic hook.
