Finally Chopped Herring releases some of the dopest Don Producci instrumental productions. If you’re not familiar with the name yet, you might be familiar with his great beats, which he already supplied for the likes as Meyhem Lauren & Action Bronson on “Welcome To The Great Outdoors EP” and Meyhem Lauren for “The Total Meyhem EP”. So these beats are nothing but sure shot instrumentals.

Debuting on Adult Swim, two of the most conceptual and unusual alternative artists in underground hip-hop have joined forces to tell an absurdist story of culture, art and oppression, set in a light-hearted dystopian future. “Views” is the fourth studio album by Canadian rapper Drake. It was released by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records. Recording sessions took place between 2014 and 2016, with the production that was primarily handled by his longtime and frequent collaborator 40, alongside with each of these several producers, including Nineteen85, Maneesh Bidaye, Kanye West and Jordan Ullman, among others. The album was supported by the five singles: "Hotline Bling", "One Dance" featuring Wizkid and Kyla, "Pop Style" featuring The Throne, "Controlla" and "Too Good" featuring Rihanna.

A rich assembly of soul, funk, and organic hip-hop textures, 2000's Mama's Gun is the classic second studio album from neo-soul singer Erykah Badu and follow-up to her groundbreaking 1997 debut Baduizm. The album achieved platinum status and topped the R&B charts for seven weeks bolstered by the Grammy-nominated lead single “Bag Lady.”

The song’s video paid homage to Ntozake Shange’s award-winning play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, with Badu presenting a “choreopoem” performed by herself and four other dancers. Mama's Gun also marked the beginning of her collaborations with the late J Dilla, who produced the Grammy-nominated “Didn’t Cha Know” and “Kiss Me On My Neck (Hesi).”

Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed that Badu had "taken her art to the next level," and applauded the singer for taking "chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime." Entertainment Weekly called Mama's Gun a "70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record."

Lost Children of Babylon offshoot group The Flying Dutchmen is a project that took years in the making. Produced exclusively by group member Vanderslice, The Dutchmen feature the non-stop, in your face lyrical bombs by Jon Murdock and Lex Starwind. Also featured on this album are Cappadonna (Wu-Tang), Philadelphia legend Burke the Jurke, Ricky Fitz, Grand Scheme, Natsy Knuckles, and Dave Vegas. This album is an instant classic, and presents some of the hardest tru-school beats known to mankind. Fans of hardcore underground East Coast Hip-Hop are going to lose their minds over this one, as there is really nothing out there on the market quite like “Foul Weather”. The trio are immediately showing pride in their Pennsylvania roots with the whole Dutchmen imagery, and skits, and their lyrics and musical backdrop only further enhances it to create quite the mysteriously dark mood. This is Pennsylvania settler rap at its best.

The Content Label, Los Angeles’s ‘experiential’ hip hop imprint, rarely signs an artist based on a demo, but an impressive delivery from Japan recently broke the trend. Recorded by Salty – AKA Tokyo-based producer / videographer Naoya Ninomiya – the demo arrived as a nearly complete object, ready for dissemination to the global hip-hop headz-space. The songs have been mastered by legendary Japanese hip-hop studio engineer ‘The Anticipation Illicit’ Tsuboi and, with Dday One acting as executive producer it is now ready to be unveiled as the thirteen track album Camera. It’s a fantastic audio journey that gives a glimpse into Japanese beat-making prowess while sitting proudly within the instrumental hip hop echelon. With “Camera”, Salty showcases a diverse set of styles and an acumen for rhythmic patterns and tone, developed through his years of crate-digging and experimentation. And there are many moments to claim as highlights … “Remonoganac” with its gentle piano, atmospheric textures, and tough beats; the laid-back hip hop funk and scratches of “ADSL”; the smoky downtempo vibe of “The Sea Came At Midnight” is reminiscent of sounds of classic Dj Krush; and “Melting In The Dark” with its cinematic layers and haunting vocal. LIT is a snapshot of Bluestaeb und JuJu Rogers' musical endeavors in Fall 2016. Both had a successful 2015 & 2016 with highly acclaimed albums and a European support tour of Oddisee for JuJu Roogers. Both musicians are working on new solo albums and both of them are not happy with having the "boom bap" stamp forced on them. Their perspective is about progression, live music, changing the formula and going new ways. This doesn’t mean that they’re blindly following trends but to question and adapt one’s own formula. In the case of lit it means adding live musicians to the equation, going for a sound that refines the direction they took on their previous releases.

With regard to content, JuJu's raps on the project deals with the important questions of our time. The trend word „lit“ becomes „LIT“, an abbreviation for "lost in translation" and a metaphor for the disconnection from trends of our society in general and hip hop especially. Racism, police brutality, gangsta rapper turning activists while still following a pattern of hate and destruction. Bluestaeb’s productions fluctuates from soulful and smooth to raw and gritty without sounding redundant or interchangeable.
