Yo! Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hiphop on vinyl and features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA in the period 1979-83. The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More through to a host of rarities and little-known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school. The album is released as a deluxe triple LP complete with 3x full inner sleeves of extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. There is also a very-limited one-pressing only special deluxe version that comes with an extra bonus super-rare 7” single of ‘Magic’s Rap’ by Magic’s Trick, aka ex-marine Magic Fraga, a record that was only ever available on US military bases! The album also comes as a deluxe double CD pack with 30-page booklet and slipcase. Yo! Boombox also features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly, one of a very select group of photographers (alongside Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo) who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip-hop in New York. These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. Where the first DJs – Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa – were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first pre-sampling rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes. As Chic’s ‘Good Times’ was to ‘Rappers’ Delight’, the songs here feature then-current dancefloor hits such as the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’, Cheryl Lynn’s ‘To Be Real’, MFSB’s ‘Love Is the Message’ while MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique new sound. In fact, the links between disco and rap date back earlier to the ‘party style’ MCing of figures such as the legendary DJ Hollywood or radio DJs like Frankie Crocker. It's rare to see Nassau, Covid and Grace Jones in the same sentence, but they were indeed part of the creative basis for DJ Vadim's brand new album, Feel UP.

As a busy international DJ, this was nothing short of armageddon for Vadim. Forty years after those sessions at Compass Point Studios, the same quest for discovery took place in Vadim's Barcelona studio. Plus One is the brand-new album from Brooklyn-based artist Lindsay Powell aka Fielded. While Fielded has put out several solo projects steeped in their trademark psychedelic R&B, they also has quietly built a reputation as a genre-bending vocalist and sought-after musical collaborator. Plus One turns that dynamic on its head, bringing together an indie music elite on Fielded’s guest list including Armand Hammer, Felicia Douglass, Kenny Segal, They Hate Change, DJ Haram, Wolf Weston, The Lasso, Child Actor and Steel Tipped Dove.

“I’ve offered myself in blips and breaths and moments, sighing under a powerful lyric, or punctuating another vocalist’s breakthrough performance,” Fielded says. “We wanted to see what could happen when I brought those same artists in to add flourishes to my visions and depth to my stories.”

Plus One is executive produced by billy woods, building on a creative partnership that goes back to the rapper’s 2019 album, Terror Management. Since then Fielded has engineered, produced and performed on a slew of Backwoodz Studioz releases, in addition to putting out two projects on the label- 2020’s Demisexual Lovelace and 2021’s Young Medusa- in addition to their extensive outside commitments. That history is reflected in the breadth of Plus One’s collaborations; Fielded stole the show on Small Bills “Safehouse,” the first song on ELUCID and The Lasso’s 2019 album Don’t Play It Straight. Here they reunite, cooking up a slinky R&B banger with “Waves.” Wolf Weston and Fielded traded harmonies on Saint Mela’s 2020 EP all for this strange baptism, and Weston returns the favor to fantastic effect on “Goddess Woes.” In 2019, Fielded joined forces with Fat Tony and Steel Tipped Dove for the Houston rapper’s Don’t Move EP. On Plus One, both artists step into her world and find their footing effortlessly—Tony on the woozy numbness of “Where I Came From,” and Dove with a stumbling cascade of drum and piano on “World’s Away.” Yet, it’s some of the newest pairings that yield the ripest fruit. Kenny Segal and Fielded combine for two album highlights, and A. Billi Free pops up for the record’s biggest curveball (unless you give that to Florida rappers They Hate Change setting fire to an ELUCID beat). Through it all, Fielded holds court, always taking or leaving exactly what the song requires.

Jason Grimez is a Cincinnati-based DJ and producer. He has a long history of record collecting, sampling, and creating new sounds with analog gear. Grimez works with some of Cincinnati's finest studio musicians to create raw, soulful, instrumental hip-hop under the moniker Doctor Bionic. The next LP, In The Infinite, is due out 12/01/2023 via Chiefdom Records.Grimez fell in love with music during the golden era of early 90's east coast hip hop - when digging for jazz and funky samples were the backbone of beats. He became comfortable scratching on a pair of 1200s and sampling records with an MPC 3000 in high school. After years of collecting music and working on his sound behind the scenes, he has compiled a huge discography of original songs.In 2015, Grimez started his independent label Chiefdom Records. His studio persona Doctor Bionic was one of the first to see a release on the new imprint. The project features a studio band of session musicians. Grimez is responsible for writing, recording, producing, mixing, and releasing the records. Meitei's authenticity shines through in "Kofū III," where complex emotions metamorphose into a kaleidoscopic fusion of lo-fi bliss. Its renaming as "Peace" symbolizes his personal odyssey towards understanding and reconciliation.

As Meitei concludes his Kofū trilogy, global listeners are invited to embark on this voyage to unearth the hidden treasures of Japanese culture and the depths of the human soul. Cedar Hill is made up of rapper Nish and beatmaker Lancecape, from Ontario, Canada. The pair met at the age of 11 while playing hockey for Cedar Hill House League, which gave birth to the group’s name. Both were huge fans of hip-hop music, and started writing rhymes and creating pause tapes from college radio shows like Power Move and Masterplan. Shortly after that, they joined forces with Korry Deez and Black Cat of IRS (“Instinctive Reaction to Struggle”) to form the Horde Crew and then combined with a North Scarborough Crew - the Lyrical Coalition - to form a super crew of MCs, DJs and beatmakers called “The Monolith”. In 2000, Nish ventured off into a solo venture, appearing on DJ Serious’s album “Dim Sum” for the lead single and video, “Enlightening”, released by Sound King Records and distributed by Fat Beats. The success of the single led to a Canada-wide tour and garnered a Juno nomination for Rap Recording of the Year. Nish continued working with DJ Serious and appeared again on his follow-up album, “Cold Tea” on Audio Research Records. For a second time Nish landed the A-Side single titled “Frost Bite” and the B-Side consisting of the unreleased remix of “Enlightening”. Powered by Fat Beats, this helped cement Nish’s name as one of Canada’s finest MCs and shine light on Canadian hip-hop globally. In 2006, Lancecape received his first major placement producing “What Up”, the first single for J Dilla affiliates Frank N Dank’s album “Xtendedplay Version 3.13”. This led to further production for some of the biggest names in hip hop, including Keith Murray and Canibus as well as features on his beats from A.G (ditc) and Rapper Big Pooh (Little Brother). Lancecape also remained a key “battle” beatmaker twice coming second in the Redbull Big Tune Beat Battles which led to vinyl released by DJ House Shoe on his label, Street Corner Music. Most recently, Lancecape became 2x champion in Ski Beats Smackpack Battles. During this time, Nish and Lance continued recording music and, in 2018, they decided to join forces and become an official group, Cedar Hill. Their music has since been picked up by some of the biggest DJs Stateside, including their single “Strains”, which was played by DJ Premier on his acclaimed Sirius XM radio show “Live From Headquarterz”. Since then, DJ Premier has played every single released by Cedar Hill and has even promoted and featured their music a number of times on his Instagram page. In early 2022, Lancecape was approached via Instagram by Nij aka Nijmakesbeats of Spread Butter - a brand that had started out in streetwear apparel - who was interested in joining forces to release a Cedar Hill EP via a new label, Spread Butter Records. The Cedar Hill EP would be the first release of the label. Building from that point, we now have the EP offering from Cedar Hill, “Variety”. The EP consists of 4 previously released songs and 2 unreleased vinyl-only tracks, together with the accompanying instrumentals on the B-side. This release is for any boom bap head or hip-hop lover of lyrics, beats and cuts. This record is a tribute to the music that Cedar Hill was raised on and continues in the vein of classic boom-bap hip hop of the 90s Golden Era.

Prolific producer Stu Bangas is back with a new collection of hard-hitting collaborations on Death Wish (Part II), the much anticipated sequel to the 2021 original. The project finds the Boston beatsmith rocking with some of his favorite emcees of all time as well as familiar names who always seem to bring their best work to his instrumentals. For Stu, it’s an honor to work with the likes of Ras Kass and Psycho Les (of the Beatnuts). He made the connections while creating the phenomenal Empires LP with Eric Bobo (of Cypress Hill), and it led to the bangers you hear on Death Wish (Part II). The track with Ras, “Sus,” is an equally hilarious and hardcore takedown of weak-willed phonies, while Psycho Les teams with Celph Titled for the gangster-but-lighthearted “Y’all Clowns.” “I grew up on all the Beatnuts albums, my whole group of friends loved them,” Stu says. “And Soul on Ice by Ras Kass?
