Tkay Maidza, the first female rapper signed to 4AD, announces details of her highly anticipated new album, Sweet Justice. The follow-up to her 2016 self-titled debut will be released on 3 November and includes the recent Flume-produced earth-shuddering single ‘Silent Assassin’. Today, Tkay shares a blistering new track, ‘Ring-A-Ling’ and official video directed by Jocelyn Anquetil.

“I’m never choosing compliance,” a defiant Maidza utters ‘Ring-A-Ling’; a warning from the Zimbabwean-born, Australian-raised, Los Angeles-based rapper, singer and producer and a mantra for Sweet Justice. Produced by Two Fresh, Tkay says of ‘Ring-A-Ling’, “I wanted to make an empowering song that tells others that my biggest focus are my goals.”

The result of a dark night of the soul—and ensuing epiphany—that led to a series of professional and personal reckonings, Sweet Justice isn’t a revenge album, but it does stem from a profound sense of karma. In a traditional sense, it’s a breakup record: about Tkay splitting off from her self-doubt and warped sense of self; the toxic figures that populated the last chapter of her life; and the idea that she should stick to any one lane.

After severing ties with old friends, she found some new ones on the same creative wavelength: Canadian producers Stint and Kaytranada, and fellow Australian Flume, all of whom contribute production. Sweet Justice is an album that embodies the beautiful contradictions of Tkay’s art: it’s a coming-of-age record by someone who’s mastered the game; an album about karmic justice and accountability that’s bright, breezy and incredibly fun. In Tkay’s mind, it’s a rebirth album, a record about harnessing the feminine power that was innate in her the whole time.

Tkay Maidza says, “Sweet Justice was a way for me to channel my emotions from what I’ve experienced in the last two years. It’s a diary of things and thoughts I’ve kept to myself. Making the record was a healing experience and I’m grateful to have worked with producers who have inspired me throughout my career.” Sweet Justice follows the 3-year-long, 24 song-strong genre-bending Last Year Was Weird trilogy exploring Maidza’s own African-Australian experience. A lot can change in a decade.

The Acwlp sessions were certainly that of a tumultuous time.

Rife with seedy taverns, eviction, travel and romantic misadventures manifold my victories and lessons were nothing if not hard-won. I felt the pressure to make something definitive while constantly seeking to become the artist I was meant to be. Listening back today there’s many things I can see as prelude or perhaps I was earning my initial moniker of Premonition because many things did indeed come to pass.

The album’s only feature was Curly Castro years before ShrapKnel was ever a discussion. We really parlayed that track into something special huh? I recall fondly taking the J to Cav’s crib to listen to beats with Quelle. Quasi routinely linking with Dove and finally emailing the then enigmatic Small Pro. I met Fresh Kils at Sxsw that year and picked the weirdest beat in his pack. Not sure he ever liked that song but the miles we went on to log together was something to behold at the very least. Dug out one of the oldest beats A.M. Breakups ever sent me and pretty sure he laughed when I asked for the stems. Green and I further established our sonic link as he helped me piece together a mosaic that was without a doubt unapologetically… me.

I released this record myself and since only have truly done vinyl business with folks I’ve known over a decade. Woods & Backwoodz, Ceschi & Fake Four, Dove & Fused Arrow and now with my good friend Zilla Rocca and Three Dollar Pistol. It’s always more fun to win together. This wasn’t a perfect record then and it isn’t now but that’s never the point of making one. It serves as an accurate snapshot of an artist coming into his own and scripting a prologue to bigger things to come. You hear what’s next all over this record and the things I’d leave behind. Happy to share it in a find physical manifestation all these years later. A lot can change in a decade.

To mark news of the album and the tour, Young Fathers today release a brand new single, “I Saw”. "Sparrow" takes a more soulful route feeling comparing himself to the titular bird leading into Ghostface returning alongside Conway the Machine for "The Pulpit" incorporating some orchestral samples talking about the street life.The penultimate track "Noir Story" is a full-on Killah Priest solo cut with a drumless instrumental & his lyricism on here is a reminder as to why he's this reviewer's 2nd favorite affiliate right behind Killa Sin in terms of lyrical skill, the previous cuts. " I’ve started to work on this album before I knew it. During June 2018 I was in Japan for a month to release my previous album « Cairn » as well as my first solo exhibition of drawings in Tokyo.

Everyday on my way to the gallery I passed in front of the same building, its name kept haunting me.

Back then I was digging for cheap 80’s Japanese CD’s in second hand stores. Most of them set the tone of this album and the direction I wanted to follow. I feel there’s a direct connection between these original sources and the sound I pursue by their meditative aspect.

Most of the demo songs were done before my daughter’s birth on August 2019 and were finalized since then. Many of the titles refer to this main event and relate to how it changed my position in life : being a link through time by becoming a father. "

LIT is a snapshot of Bluestaeb und JuJu Rogers' musical endeavors in Fall 2016. Both had a successful 2015 & 2016 with highly acclaimed albums and a European support tour of Oddisee for JuJu Roogers. Both musicians are working on new solo albums and both of them are not happy with having the "boom bap" stamp forced on them. Their perspective is about progression, live music, changing the formula and going new ways. This doesn’t mean that they’re blindly following trends but to question and adapt one’s own formula.
