"God Sound" was the sophomore album of the Boogiemonsters from 1997, being a duo then consisting of Vex Da Vortex and Mondo McCann after their debut "Riders Of The Storm: The Underwater Album" from 1994 as a four-men crew. The album production was mostly handled by themselves, additional beats were provided by Domingo, John Doe and Caspa. Features included Philly poetress Bahamadia as well as Tysha.

"God Sound" is not the cliched distillation of sophomore album angst that has become the norm in modern day artistry. Unlike many musicians who feel pressed to release a second album, Mondo & Vex took their time, honed their production skills and solidified their personal situations. Like God's true sound - that tree growing in the midst of urban decay; the sunflower making its way through a crack in concrete, a sunshower dissipating the dirt, grime and heat of a hot summer day - "God Sound" flourished around advents of human civilization.

Label co-founders Joey Deez & Doug (Remulak) had long discussed the concept of creating a compilation album in order to showcase the wide rage of styles that comprise the imprint's eclectic output.

So, you might have two questions.

1. What is ecovinyl?

If a records get pressed in different colorways, chemics are used to clean up the machine and interrupt the process. When using the ecovinyl way, those chemics are not used and the next color balls are just thrown in close to the finish of the colorway that is pressed before. In this case they pressed black before white, so the vinyl will not be 100% white but each vinyl will be unique thanks to the process. So the first record pressed as white will have a big black influence and will turn out partly black, grey, white, the last one will be entirely white.

2. Who is Natia The God?

Raised in North Inglewood on the Wu bible, but blessed with a musicality that fits into the sound of the new West Coast, Natia sounds starkly apart.

1988 is the follow up to Knxwledge’s official debut album Hud Dreems (Stones Throw, 2015). The same year Hud Dreems was released Knx worked with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly, earning the producer his first Grammy. A duo with Anderson .Paak called NxWorries was formed around the same time. Their single “Suede” became a viral hit, vaulting the singer to R&B stardom, and their album Yes Lawd! followed through on that song’s immense promise. Knx and Paak have quietly continued collaborating, and some of the new work is heard on 1988.

A prolific artist in the extreme sense of the word, Knxwledge continues to redefine instrumental hip-hop almost in real-time with a stream of beat tapes numbering in the hundreds on Bandcamp, and video remixes on Instagram.

This prolific output began early. 1988 takes its name from the fact that much of the new record was created that very year, when Knx was an infant. As the story is told, little baby Knx was left alone by his mother for just a few moments and crawled to a family member’s vintage Sp–12 sampler. When his mother returned he had already produced his first beats and nearly mastered the machine. These tracks, all produced before nap time while rocking a Nike diaper, were stored over the years on floppy discs, then brought to his studio in recent months where they were finished up, mixed, and mastered.

United by hustle and an unmatchable enthusiasm for alternative hip hop, Spoken Nerd and Juan Cosby have teamed to make the synth-pop/hip-hop-fused LP, Grapes. Grapes was actually first concocted as word of a rumored reboot of "Tales From the Crypt" landed in the ears of Nathan Conrad. The whispers of rebirth for the series stoked the fire of nostalgia in fans of former years, but simultaneously sparked a larger scheme in the Nashville based rapper, Spoken Nerd. Wheels turning, Nathan Conrad, aka Spoken Nerd, shared his ideas of cultivating a "Tales from the Crypt" mixtape to Cincinnati based producer, Juan Cosby. Surely the "on-brand" horror themed lyrics of Spoken Nerd would mesh seamlessly with the John Carpenter-esque beats by Juan to fuel fans of EC and, perhaps, catch the ears of EC themselves. From there we are taken on a trip through the spooky “Sacred Forest” and the dark quasi-Americana of “The Voyage.” In ”Core,” Sibitt takes a fast paced and aggressive lead, while Bleubird complements it with his equally seething but laid-back counterpart. “Wonder ‘s Answer,” conflates the languages into a mysterious groove. “Plus Minus” has Sibitt offering a beautiful and weird melody, which primes us for Bluebird’s hypnotic spell-rant while Da Ros’s beats deteriorate gradually around us. The finale, “Same Train,” with its charismatic and infectious swirl, is enough to make you want to start the record again to decipher the things you may have missed the first time around. Could the calendar week, be a more apt metaphor? Seven Days Six Nights is a cycle that leads us right back to the top.

This summer Oatmello suffered deep personal tragedy as two close family members passed from Coronavirus. After a period of morning, he headed to NYC and poured himself into eight days of back to back studio sessions (and late night whiskey drinking sessions) with the best lofi beat makers in NYC. Jazzinuf, Hippo Dreams, Birocratic, Sleepdealer and Jacuzzi Jefferson.

The goal from the start was for the project to be as free and in the moment with the production as possible, incorporating live recordings of guitar, bass, keys, flute, and harp. The end result is a medley of sounds, incorporating inspirations from 90’s boombap, early lofi beats, and jazz. Sections of the album would sound equally at home on a 70’s blue note records release or the Jazz Vibes lofi playlist on Spotify.

This project is part of the limited collectors series: "Zodiac Series" hosted by Aviary Bridge. "nyc Stories" by Oatmello is edition 8 (out of 12) representing the zodiac sign Leo. Previous editions in this series featuring artists like Remulak, Deeb, Hoffy Beats can be found on the Aviary Bridge Records Bandcamp page and Qrates.
