A rich assembly of soul, funk, and organic hip-hop textures, 2000's Mama's Gun is the classic second studio album from neo-soul singer Erykah Badu and follow-up to her groundbreaking 1997 debut Baduizm. The album achieved platinum status and topped the R&B charts for seven weeks bolstered by the Grammy-nominated lead single “Bag Lady.”

The song’s video paid homage to Ntozake Shange’s award-winning play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, with Badu presenting a “choreopoem” performed by herself and four other dancers. Mama's Gun also marked the beginning of her collaborations with the late J Dilla, who produced the Grammy-nominated “Didn’t Cha Know” and “Kiss Me On My Neck (Hesi).”

Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed that Badu had "taken her art to the next level," and applauded the singer for taking "chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime." Entertainment Weekly called Mama's Gun a "70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record."

Vital Signs is a Baltimore based group comprised of 3 members, Roland Taylor AKA Redstorm/MC Connoisseur & George Slade AKA MC Law/Lynx, one DJ/Producer, Brandon Ware AKA DJ B-Ware/Arkitek.

In 1992 they release their first 12" which is now became a very hard to find record. Few years later the group splits and Mc Connoisseur and MC Lynx decide to join forces with Juahar (Scientific Labs Studios) in order to bring back the heat. Called NuGen the new group recorded a lot of unreleased materials in the mid and late 90's

Nowadays many East Coast Boom Bap collectors deep in the game are hunting for little known hardcore hip-hop from the late 90's and early 00's. In an era when hardcore New York rap starting falling off there were other areas like Virginia, along with DC and Baltimore to name a few that spawned a lot of street crews and rappers that kept it hardcore and underground detailing the hustle and everyday struggle to surivive. Most of these releases were extremely limited and only sold locally making them very sought after in this day and age.

One of those rappers was Starr Nyce, a man from Lynchburg a.k.a. Hill City (Iceburg), VA that even the most knowledgeable headz might not know. In that era Starr Nyce dropped several dope street albums that are plain and simple impossible to find these days. HHE has had the privilege to look inside Starr Nyce's vaults and handpick some of the dopest tracks. The result is an album that's 19 tracks deep shedding light on life through the eyes of Starr Nyce. I hope you will enjoy this one as much as I have, 1L!

On his album Negro Deluxe Siifu trades in soulful rap for punk, fueled by the Black experience in America followed by spiritual jazz and poetry. A beautiful chaotic collage of sounds that reflect the black man’s thoughts on the day-to-day. It doesn’t take long to reach the heart of Negro, Pink Siifu’s new album. It’s an aggressive collection of hardcore punk and free jazz, with bold lyrics that encourage shooting back at trigger-happy law enforcement. This album profoundly communicated the anger of an African-American community beset by police violence a month before the murder of George Floyd lit the streets on fire. In April 2021, he revisited the project with Negro Deluxe, which doubled the length of the original. Pink Siifu tells Bomb Magazine “after we were done mastering and mixing, Zeroh was like, “Yo,Negrois like fire, andNegro Deluxeis like smoke….So I would characterizeNegro Deluxeas, like, after you’re angry, after you’ve punched a wall, after you beat somebody up, whatever, how do I channel that into something else? How do I just let it go? I feel likeNegro Deluxeis that, for real, in a nutshell. It’s like the chaos calmed down after all the fire’s gone and the smoke is in the air.” It isn’t anything like ensley, Siifu’s breakthrough 2018 LP. Where that record used mid-tempo soul and hip-hop to score his upbringing, Negro is a riotous mix calling for Black revolution. It’s also the most fearless project in his growing discography. Negro harkens back to 1992, to Ice-T’s thrash metal band Body Count,song “Cop Killer”. This album is meant to remind us of Rodney King, Racist Cops, The Black Panther Party, and Christopher Dorner, the ex-L.A. police officer who, in 2013, went on a violent shooting spree against his former colleagues and their family members due to seeing his own policeman violate the people there supposed to be protecting. “It’s about America, It’s about the trauma that comes from the flag. It’s about understanding that it’s okay to be angry.”

Game's eighth proper studio album came out during an active 2016. Earlier in the year, he released soundtracks for a documentary, Streets of Compton, and a mobile app game, Block Wars. On a personal level, he and 50 Cent made amends following a prolonged period of mutual antagonism, and then he went after Meek Mill, as documented on the forceful but controlled "92 Bars," included here. Although it's titled 1992 and is heavily nostalgic (even by Game's standard), stacked with references to the state of hip-hop circa the early '90s, it's inspired by the era more than it is a period piece.

"Even God Has A Sense Of Humor" is the long-awaited follow up album to Maxo's critically acclaimed 2019 release Lil Big Man. Across the 14-tracks, Even God Has A Sense Of Humor pays tribute to the mercurial nature of life and includes features from Liv.e, keiyaA, LastNameDavid, and Melanie Charles along with the previously released singles "Free!," produced by Dev Morrison and "48," produced by Madlib and featuring Pink Siifu. The Fader recently sat down with Maxo to discuss the album, which they described as having "a de fi ant glow, like a bronze statue still standing after an intense tornado." Born Maxamillian Allen, Even God Has A Sense Of Humor fi nds Maxo earnest, full-hearted, and lyrically agile. His delivery punches as he poetically unpacks the trials and blessings that have marked the last three years since Lil Big Man, his stirring and meditative debut album. “Life is always gonna be life-ing,” Maxo says, speaking to the spiritual lessons that inspired this new project and an album process that has revealed to him the many ways in which he’s divinely protected. The album’s striking cover features three casted sculptures of Maxo by legendary NYC-based artist artist John Ahearn, photographed by the rapper’s friend Steven Traylor. The image both preceded the music and set the tone for the record’s overall aura. Experiencing the casting process—which required long periods of stillness for form, and breathwork to avoid claustrophobia —became a metaphor about ego death for Maxo. “I had to go to a space where I was just not there,” he says. As the molding was poured over his body and the voices of those in the room became distant, Maxo’s inner world came into focus. “By the time it hardened, it seemed like the sculpture had risen to be 20 feet above where it was fi rst— almost like it grew tall,” he explains.
