Here's a split vinyl of quarantine protest jams from two Seattle heavy-hitters: AJ Suede & Specswizard. Both artists were inspired by 2020's Black Lives Matter protests, mask-wearing, and stay-at-home orders to produce boom-bap tunes that could only exist in the 21st Century. Insomniac magazine praises the pair's 'next level lyricism.' The Seattle Times picked AJ Suede's brilliant 'Long May We Rain' as one of the best albums of 2020. On the flip side of this cross-generational split LP, you'll find the vinyl-only 'Lost Gems' project from Specswizard. He's a veteran of Seattle's scene, releasing dozens of self-produced albums and EPs since his start in 1988. On his latest, the familiar sound of buzzing amps and tape hiss makes way for major-key soul turned into pensive bangers. Specswizard’s low, late-night-in-the-living-room baritone conjures the feeling of recording in a cramped apartment while the neighbors are sleeping. Still, the beats knock like side doors and his narratives hover like heavy rain and cumulus clouds of weed smoke. For his 3rd album The Soul Vegetable Orchestra, Ajax Tow is bringing us on a ten tracks sonic adventure, where many inspirations and references collide. The succession of tracks inspires many feels and moods from sipping a good old bourbon, dance in the kitchen, or gallops though the plains of Napoli. We can found the influence of Danger Mouse paying hommage to the late Ennio Morricone (Roma, 2011), a cinematic side of Shawn Lee and Misha Panfilov, from music library à la JeanClaude Vannier to the Band Voilaa, a little glimpse of pimped Ninja tune, a reworked organic Mo’Wax vibe, all mixed up and spiced up with a Tricky style. The cinematic style and first notes of “So What” reminds Air first EP and the beautiful bass of “Melody Nelson”. For the dessert, “Smallville” is a kind of wedding cake with 70’s loops sprinkling that brings us to Phillipe Sarde’s La Grande Bouffe soundtrack, but with a more contemporary feeling.

You have to know how to move away from the rich, strong and noisy streets, if you want to discover another Havana. A Havana far from the tourist circuits and preconceived images. A Havana where one discovers bucolic, but hard and stripped too after slow journeys in the crowded buses, a Havana with which Al Quetz maintains a passionate history since more than fourteen years.

Installed in one of those neighborhoods that can only be reached by going deeper into the alleys, from the open window of the studio comes the sound of banging drums and thumping bass. The sound reaches the streets on which the day rises.

The place wakes up in a growing tumult, with some rare engines coughing, conversations under the windows, songs of the street vendors , an urban ballet sets up as the sun darts its rays. Far from the musical clichés with percussions and horns, Cuba is an island bombarded with influences that one discovers. An island which vibrated for the jazz, the soul, the psychedelic rock , from the waves coming from the Caribbean to those of the bulky neighboring ogre. A musical flowering as varied as abundant that the glorious post-revolutionary label Areito has on thousands of recordings, and that Al Quetz has designated as the sole source of his samples to compose Habanologia.

From the ambiences that punctuate the local daily life caught by his samplers, he let the melancholy infiltrate his hip hop beats, the nostalgia melting in the depths of his grooves. Nostalgia in the Cuban air, even during moments of intense laughter, which never totally disappears.

Habanologia restores these moments when the song of the birds has extinguished those of the cars. Where, sitting on a doorstep, we comment on the life of the neighborhood, we watch the women's swaying at eye level. The whole day if necessary, the coffee at one peso, after a certain hour, which leaves its place to the Planchao rum. Wandering through its streets where a chance encounter can itself bring others and lead to the essence of the habanera life. From Regla, after a short trip on the bus-boat that crosses the bay, savor the end of the day, observe the capital from afar, let the nocturnal insects ensure some arrangements and drift towards mysterious horizons, bringing to the contemplation of the place and the moment.

A flute, a keyboard, percussions or a voice. Al Quetz also invited his friends from the island or elsewhere to decorate his productions with their live touch. To share with him this Havana for which he covered his tracks, mixed times and distorted space-time to make it timeless. To write with Habanalogia, a declaration of love to the Cuban capital, to make Havana, His Havana.

Poly Dance Theatre presents its new show: Warning: killer track! Let's start with side A: an international adventure. Backstage, we meet up with rico OBF, who has recorded MC Waraba, the Malian singer and pioneer of the "Balani show" for his forthcoming album on Blanc Manioc Records, at the dubquake studio. Still backstage, we come across androo, the little pictureditor hanging around, who offers to do a re-interpretation by re-creating a riddim from the vocal.

So here's poet rapper MC Waraba, singing in Bambara and French, telling us a story about a girl's difficult choices over a riddim made in androo. The result is a strange, solid, bewitching and melancholy blend of dub, wave and drill trap music. The references are many and scattered, as always with androo (just take a look at his bedroom). After the pop-epic poem, dub mix versions unfold, from dub vocal, with reminiscence of the delay-cut poem, to deep, robust instrumental straight.

Anzola is a Toronto based Venezuelan-born recording artist and multi-instrumentalist, whose loop-based neo-psychedelic music incorporates elements of Instrumental Hip Hop, Electronic, Jazz, and Latin genres. Utilizing samplers, classic synths, drum machines, and live instrumentation, Anzola’s sound is groove-heavy and often depicts a laid-back landscape. Anzola is set to release his upcoming self-produced six-track EP entitled Bodega, on April 8, 2022. The record was developed throughout the course of 2020 and into early 2021 and was recorded at Anzola’s home studio in Toronto. Throughout the pandemic, Anzola continued working on music while re-building his home studio in a new physical space. This provided an opportunity to experiment with different layouts of his gear, which impacted the ways in which he interacted with the equipment. Bodega was born out of a manipulation of immediate loopable tracks for Anzola’s keys and synths, and fluid rhythmic changes that progressed as the songs themselves were created. Anzola’s previous 2020 release, Caracas, was a six-track EP that embodied his experience of growing up in the city of Caracas. The record celebrated his youth and explored the parts of himself that were left behind when he immigrated to Canada. Caracas was entirely self-produced and was created instrumentally utilizing drum machines, bass, synths, electric pianos, and samplers.

In the summer of 2021, the ArOzA Crew released the tune "Asphalt" as single. Shortly thereafter, the then still unknown band was perceived as a promising newcomer in the HipHop scene. Interviews were given with BET, Urban Vault UK, Puls, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the record label Expanded Art Records also got in touch to license the song for a 12inch vinyl. Instead of just one single song for a 12inch, the band offered EAR an entire EP with more songs from the time Asphalt was created and fitting remixes. For remixes, Flip from Texta and Maniac from the Demograffics were won over. Flip, a rap star in his country Austria, remixed the song "For Da Nation" which features London rapper Rece Miller. Maniac from the Demograffics, known for his work with Liquid, Dexter and the Tribez, did the remix work for the title song „Aspahlt“. Also on the EP the joint "Roswell Incident", a bomb by 90Wyse from Buffalo in the United States on which the ArOzA crew gave a feature. The 12-track EP is rounded off with the instrumentals of the songs and remixes.

Flight is a collection of music from American beat maker Artifakts featuring a continuous mix of widespread emotion tied together with a warm, genuine aesthetic. From the opening synth arpeggio, Flight will have the listener engaged in a sonic journey that blends golden era hip-hop drums, space-traversed synthesis and trance inducing sample selections.

THE Sounds OF Flight feature various samples of the soul genre, while a larger portion revolve around a particular series of music created and licensed in the mid 70’s to late 80’s. With collections such as April Orchestra, KPM Music and Bruton Music Library, many of the selected samples (better known as "Library Music") were originally recorded to evoke a particular mood for accompanying other media (movies, television, etc). While much of the Library Music genre remain uncirculated, abandoned in an era with a consumer of a smaller caliber, Artifakts breathes new life into each with every passing beat. Focusing on minimal methodology, Flight utilizes a prime selection of samples and classic MPC style drum programing, all woven with vintage sounding synthesis.

As it was birthed, Flight is best enjoyed with a glass of whiskey or smoke of choice in a low lit atmosphere.
