The latest slice of tasty vinyl from RS Records, the third one to be exact, is a 45 dedicated to that hip-hop love: heads who’ve had it bad for the culture and hip-hop lovers who just happened to catch a stray from Cupid! This time around, production was handled by Slick Walk, aka SaturnVybz and DJ Robert Smith. Side A kicks off with “50 (More Hits)," a space funk-inflected mellow banger featuring NYC legends QNC (Q-Ball and Curt Cazal) professing their love for the one and only. The combo of Premo-type crisp drum programming, soft cumulus cloud-like synths, and a warm, velvety bass will make you feel like you’re flying, that is, if you’re cruising in your car. If you’re just taking a stroll down your block, the sensation is that of walking on air. Stitched from references to old school and golden era gems, where almost every bar is a hyperlink to a deep classic, the track is literally a hip-hop encyclopedia.

Side B takes a turn into another type of mellow with “No Way Out.” The drums get thicker, the programming loses the retro inflection. The high hats start skipping, stuttering, and scuttling about, while the bass drops hella low to counterbalance a snare that straight up smacks you upside the head. The track features Slimkid3 of the legendary Pharcyde crew alongside Portland native R&B singer Moonbeam Kelly, going for a classic hip-hop duet. Two versions - "golden" (hand-numbered 100 pieces) and classic "black" (150 copies worldwide).

The "ongakudō / droga muzyki" project is ("The way of music" in English). Initiated by Groh - head of the JuNouMi label (est. 2002 Polish hip-hop label), the project is the result of cooperation between Polish and Japanese artists. First, Twardowski created music based on samples from Japanese albums. Then MCs Kanetsugu (jp) and Prykson Fisk (pl) were invited. The next element were DJs - 1an from Tokyo and DJ Eprom from Warsaw (former IDA world champion). An important element of the project is the graphic design, for which Małgorzata "Mauko" Korczak is responsible - exploring the art of Japanese Shodō calligraphy. As many as three versions of covers were created. One limited edition (hand-numbered 100 pieces), a version with a black wax and a version exclusively for the Japanese market. This 7" is the first part of the Polish-Japanese series. It is the beginning of our journey.

KRS-One and his original band Boogie down Productions are amongst a small collective of genre-making, scene building pioneers of this thing we call Hip Hop, and Poetry and 9mm are amongst 2 of their early works of wonder. The 1987 jam 'Poetry' famously became the beat basis and was sampled (twice!) in MF Doom's 'Doomsday', of which original copies change hands for £200+. It’s flipped by the earlier monster 'My 9mm Goes Bang', which along with tracks by Schooly D and Ice T, can be seen as an early foray into gangster rap, albeit it, from that NYC angle. Original mixes are remastered for 2024, all housed the legendary B-Boy labels and sleeves.

The title of the most recent Atmosphere album, May 2023's So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously, evokes the multiversal storytelling that's recently vaulted into the mainstream consciousness. With their latest effort, the irrepressible Talk Talk EP, the Minneapolis legends dart across threads of space-time to grab hold of the one where Slug and Ant became titans of the electro-rap that was foundational to their youths. By evoking acts like Kraftwerk and Egyptian Lover, Atmosphere makes visions of the future from four decades ago seem new once again, the relentless forward churn of technological optimism reimagined as an endless loop with irresistible drums. The genesis of the Talk Talk EP was the session for a song of the same name that appeared on So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously. A collaboration with Lifter Puller alum Bat Flower, the song "Talk Talk" exists alongside electro classics in an uncanny valley that's been warped into a sweaty nightclub, at once vaguely alien and deeply human. Enamored with the song's outcome, Slug and Ant returned for a longer exploration of the sound, to mesmeric results. The pulsing "Rotary Telephone," where the TV antennas seem tuned to a world just slightly askew from ours, thrives on the tension between Slug's careening vocals and the song's taught structure_form matched perfectly with content. And on "Hear Hear," the struggle to make human connections is revealed as a beautiful one. For all its well-documented roots in disco and R&B, rap's connection to the electronic music of the 1970s and `80s is a core part of its DNA. The Talk Talk EP is one of the clearest articulations of this truth to emerge in many years, a testament to the communal power of programmed sound. For proof, look no further than "Traveling Forever," the haunting missive that closes out the record. Images flash: of police knees on necks, of prying cameraphones, another empty hotel room indistinguishable from the last. "I never got to learn how to dance for you," Slug raps, pointedly. "I don't know whether or not that's an attribute." A chill runs down your spine but the skull at its top keeps nodding.

Operating within the same local scene, it didn’t take long for Radiohop and Kid Sublime to cross paths. The latter has been cheffing up records on a consistent basis for over two decades. As a long-time fan of People Under The Stairs and Damu The Fudgemunk, this is a full-circle moment for Soul Supreme. He deejayed alongside Damu in the past, and he has shown his appreciation to both P.U.T.S. and Damu with various tribute mixes. Matter of fact, this release is a full-circle moment for any hip-hop head: this 45 marks the very first time Thes One and Damu can be heard on one record together.

In typical crate-digging fashion, Thes One flips key elements from Soul Supreme's "Taking The Stand" into a neck-snapping beat. The instrumental album version of "Taking The Stand" can be found on the B-side of this 45.
